- In this video I talk through a plan for some low-level navigation in the Lake District as a sequel to my Mach Loop video. This route is commonly flown by RAF crews (though not usually from Leeds!). There's no complicated GPS, just a map and stopwatch. I'll talk you through various planning considerations and techniques as we go. But feel free to use the chapters to jump to your preferred bit. Don't skip too much or you'll miss some of the top tips along the way. Please use the comments section for any questions or requests. You can even point out any of my errors that you see!

this is by far the most immersive flight I ve seen so far from MSFS. But that’s not all, there is also this very calm voice explaining everything.
And most important: it’s done by a real Hawk pilot and you can see and feel it that he is at home, the constant checks with the runway with head or eye tracking, the scenery is great in terms of realistic looking. What a knowledge transfer! Thanks a lot for giving me a perfect guide for flying the BEST jet in the MSFS the way it’s done in RL.

Love the videos,know the area down the dales,was born at RAF Leeming in 1957,Father was a pilot on Canberras and Valettas 228 OCU.

I would love to see a basics series. C&D startup, taxiing, takeoff, pattern, landing, cockpit familiarisation, standard operating procedures, in-flight calculations, mindset (things like how to stay ahead of the aircraft & how to get back ahead of it if you fall behind).
Then, perhaps more long term, some sort of intermediate series on specific things like non-normal situations, flying low level, flying into civilian airports, time over target.
I’m currently on my PPL and current with commercial operations in flight sim but I’d love to be able to gain far more knowledge in military operations. Watching you flying a trainer is loads of fun but, while I understand what you’re doing and sometimes why, I rarely understand the thought processes behind it. I’d love to see a series that isn’t so fast paced, perhaps even ground theory, that would allow me to not feel rushed when trying to understand the technical parts of your commentary. I’m definitely not saying that I don’t like the technical commentary. Just that I’d like to be able to get my head around it prior to hearing you use it in practice. All in all though, love the videos, love your natural presenting style and can’t wait for more!
Excellent points, it’s always tricky balancing getting into the action and teaching the theory first. I’m going to do smaller videos that I think will make it more manageable. Thanks for the input 👍🏻

I too would love to see videos in a series starting with the basics of military flight planning and operations, but moving on to more advanced stuff. For instance, you calculated your altitude as 11,000’. It would be interesting to hear an explanation of the rationale behind that calculation and others that are used.

I had know idea there was so much math involved in the sorties flown, i just assumed it was fly certain headings until a particular landmark becomes visible, but I realise in poor visibility that wouldn't work.

Totally! Shame playback or MSFS was doing something to the sound on the external view valley flypast. The sounds on this model are excellent!
Lovely work. A double bonus for me as I drove this route last week. Also spent 5 years building Hawk at BAe inc the role equipment, gun pod and smoke generator. My preferred ride is XPlane though ;-)
Currently in the process of building 33EFTS in Canada where dad learned to fly in '43, went on to 582 Pathfinders as a Sgt Pilot. The aim is to learn on the Cornell just as he did.

Ah good old RAF Leeming I lived about 100mtr from the taxi way opposite 34 in the 70s before they rebuilt it and added on units I do touch and goes there myself, great informative vid

This is SO much better than my memories of doing VFR nav triangles at 8 times the height and a quarter of the speed in a PA28, albeit the fundamentals still hold true of course. Another really great instructional video that's also a very pleasant watch. You deserve even more subs ... and they will come!

Makes me home sick. I am in Australia these days but years ago we used to watch Jet Provosts and Vulcans take off from RAF Leeming from a fishing spot on the river nearby at Morton on Swale. Really enjoy your cool calm perspective on flying - there is much to learn from you.

Took the PC21 down into the Grand Canyon in Arizona, great fun and the scenery is really good too. Lots of turning with the high walls left and right.

Another very useful and informative video - thank you. It's interseting to see you're using Memory Map; I've been using it for a couple of years now. As I do my flight simming on a laptop and don't have a 2nd monitor, so it it's always useful to have my route on my mobile.
First time I’ve looked tbh. It’s not quite the military version but the scale and details is nice. Shame they haven’t developed the software a little bit.
Great stuff. Went up Dunmail earlier this year, caught a pair of 100 Sqn Hawk T1's and a flight of 4 F-15's from Lakenheath. Very lucky indeed. Also did Thirlmere but unfortunately had a blank that day. Interesting to see it from your perspective, thanks!

Not really. It’s a lot of experience to know the good places/routes to go. But if you find anywhere with high ground and long valleys you won’t be disappointed. The map I used is very similar to what RAF crews might use but it doesn’t include the low flying area information such as flow arrows. If you like Scotland, Star Wars or the Moffat valley are great! And of course Loch Ness and the western isles are stunning.
Love to fly the Hawk around the British countryside. But I started a little search for more low flying routes. Rainbow Canyon Nevada is one, but fairly boring. Than I saw the Axalp firing range of the Swiss Airforce and started nosing around that location. You absolutely want to start up your Hawk at LSMM Meiringen! It is stunning!

12:26 Sad story from 1987 at that location. I believe the valley became one way after that. “On 17th June 1987 this Tornado was one of two 20 Squadron aircraft flying a low level training flight. As they crossed the Lake District they flew down Thirlmere heading roughly north before making a turn to fly west at the northern end of the reservoir to avoid Keswick and had then planned to fly north up Lake Bassethwaite. Tornado ZA493 was the lead aircraft and the second aircraft was following it slightly higher and to one side. As they made the climbing turn to the west at the end of Thirlmere the pilot of the following Tornado noticed two Jaguars approaching from the west and flying towards the lead Tornado. The lead Tornado struck the lead Jaguar and it was thought that neither crews had seen the other aircraft prior to the collision. The Jaguars were flying from the west and were climbing to fly over ridge of high ground between Derwent Water and Thirlmere. Both aircraft were effectively out of the eyeline of each other with the other aircraft either been hidden behind high ground or being below the nose of the aircraft being flown. The crew of the Tornado were able to eject from the aircraft and landed in trees below Walla Crag. The Tornado crashed nearby in a field near Deerclose Cottages and broke up in the field, crossed the main Borrowdale road and came to rest in a field just up from Derwent Water. The navigator received back injuries as a result of the ejection but the pilot appears to have escaped injury. This crash site appears to be well known in the district and the incident was witnessed by a number of local people. The details surrounding Jaguar XZ116 are recorded on its own webpage.l

Thank you. And the junction is named that way due to the shape of the valleys coming together to look like a Mercedes’ badges.

Hi Chris. Great videos. I’m a retired RAF SAR hello pilot whose only outlet to aviation these days is via my iMac and X Plane 11. I find virtual helicopters useless (no seat of the pants feel) but do enjoy flying around the low level system in the Hawk T1. Could you tell me what turning circle you planned for during 420kt 4g turns? I’m lucky enough to have some old UK Low Flying Charts which allow me to practice those almost forgotten planning skills. Getting the turning circle right would help enormously.
Ah, all so easy... 😁 When I'm flying my Hawk, it never looks anywhere near this smooth. Doesn't help that I have a really twitchy stick, especially in pitch! Constantly oscillating between -4G and +10G. And when you say "130Kts by 300ft", mine is more "130kts on approach, glance away at another instrument, glance back and I'm either doing 160kts or plummeting out of the sky at 100kts". 🤣
I have an extension on my joystick for more precise inputs as it is damn hard depending on your joystick. Try setting a precise power setting on final. 87-89 then small adjustments

Hey cg, I'm a PPL who putters about in FS2020 for a bit of fun. I picked up the Hawk after watching your vids and, wow, what a fun little jet. Only thing though, it seems insanely forgiving and easy to chuck about - is that indicative of the real jet?

Forgiving when treated right! You must have the knack! 😉 The real jet is forgiving too. You don’t get the sense you’re ‘flying on egg shells!’ But pull to hard and it’ll throw you a curve ball. Sadly spinning with swept wings isn’t modelled well in MSFS.
Great video, thank you. I teach Air Navigation as a CI at my local Air Cadets Sqn. Was interested in the enroute techniques you employ to adjust for trimmings and course. Would welcome a detailed explanation of route planning and enroute navigation....

Settings are default. Warthog HOTAS. MFG 10cm extension. 👍🏻

I copy your trim setting, lift nose approx 100 knots. I constantly slide across RWY adjusting with pedals. Can you help in any way to reduce? Thank you. Scotland UNITED KINGDOM.
You can put some aileron into the wind and reduce as speed builds to help prevent drift from crosswind.

Quite interesting how you got the VORs to work in the ILS frequency box, this doesn't work for me. I have to use the corresponding tacan code to get any distance or azimuth info. Is there anything else needed to make this work?
Should be per the setup I demo’d. Have you tried it with Pole Hill VOR? Make sure the ILS panel is selected to VOR.

Hey how did u get the pan camera at 11:45 thought there isn’t a pan camera on msfs
I used FS Playground software to record the flypast then replayed it using drone camera not tethered to aircraft. The new inbuilt replay works better with less stutters
Hi Chris, how are you managing to keep the Hawk so stable? I try to trim, but end never stays stable
The trim may have gotten a bit worse after the sim updates since this was recorded. Largely it’s 2000 hours experience of Select Hold Trim, a solid cross check, and my HOTAS being setup for more subtle inputs.

@@cgaviator Something is bugged about clicking stuff in VR it works about 20% of the time. It seems to be working better since I turned of the blue tooltips thingy but still not usable for me in vr.

Have you checked calibration and axis sensitivity? Have you got any assists on that may be controlling throttle?

I was asking why didn't you go into much higher detail with your planning stage, it is on a very basic level, good for absolute beginners but flight simmers want more realism.
For example, planning a flight with the brady navigation rule tool on a real physical map that allows you to fly very accurately and arrive at the turn points exactly on time. If the plan states you will cross your turn point at 18m24s, that is when you will cross it.
I live very close to RAF Valley and being a flight simmer I put a lot of research and study into how the RAF plan their flights for low level navigation and I came across an ex QFI at Valley that taught me navigation, planning and flying techniques you don't even touch on in your video. He showed me how to use the brady rule and the importance of arriving at a Tgt waypoint on time and to the second using nothing but a map and stopwatch.

@@nvstewart I’m sorry the comments haven’t made it through, maybe a RUclips thing. I would say that real world TOT was less important early in training as takeoffs always slipped. So for that reason hack time was more important. As for the Brady Rule, it’s a great piece of kit and you can get very accurate with it. While we did some paper plans we quickly got to mission planning software. Sadly I don’t have much time to teach the Brady Rule methods and I don’t think many people would have one (currently, myself included!). I’ll keep it in mind maybe as a background piece. @@cgaviator ye, thats the thing these days, computers are replacing the old, more entertaining ways of doing things.
I wasn't trying to be condescending or negative in any way, flight simmers are always looking for more accurate ways of doing things and I thought it would of been a good idea to show them the brady rule as every video made by real or ex RAF pilots never seem to mention it, like it is some kind of dark secret lol. Is it required? No, but there will be simmers out there that would be amazed at how accurately they could fly with one.
Saying that your videos are good and the way you navigate is simple and it works, putting people on the right track of learning low level navigation.
BTW have you heard of the flight planner 'VFR Flight'? It's freeware and also gives you 'minute markers' on your fligh plan if you wish, I use it from time to time if I can not be bothered using a real map along with the Brady Rule. Also 'Free Stopwatch' is a very good windows stopwatch, much much better than the default as it allows you to 'reset' the timer without resetting the accumulated time, good for timing specific legs and keeping total flight time.
