The Orient Kamasu can be found around $200 today; the Mako III is surely going that direction as well, along with the Mako Chronograph. Still, they offer more than any Seiko "5KX", and i daresay it competes easily with a Turtle if as desk divers we ignore the professional specifications. Orient is also easier to find in many markets than Glycine.

I don't think they pass any of the ISO standards including water resistance.
Then again they aren't really divers, more like diver style sport watches. Even Orient says they aren't actual divers. Water resistance not to ISO standards, very weak non-ISO compliant springbars and bracelets etc. and no they aren't tested to the Japanese dive watch standards either which is pretty much identical to ISO.

    • @TheGrenadier97

The Turtle is a professional diver according to some standards, and the lume on 3 was even updated according to new rules; but this isn't the point, neither meaningful.

I was with you till you said better than a turtle lol. I would not say better than a King Turtle or even a turtle when it comes to the horology and history of the turtle. Also Orient is owned by Seiko.

    • @TheGrenadier97
      @TheGrenadier97 Год назад +1

I don't give particular importance for Seiko's history when i risk paying more for a watch that would probably come misaligned, for instance.
Orient isn't owned by Seiko; both watch makers are owned by Seiko Group, which makes them sister companies with their own autonomies.

I've always liked Orient, and own several, but never really took a liking to the Mako until now. This one really stands out. I do think they missed an opportunity, though: having this watch with just the date (no day) would REALLY make the dial pop, IMHO. This one is on my list, for sure. Thanks for a great vid!

For those new to Nato straps I would suggest cutting off the tail end of the strap and sealing it with a lighter to prevent fraying. This way you get a thinner, less puffy single pass strap with the nato feel. From there you can experiment with the full strap and see how you like it. The nato does need time to break in and soften a bit so it can fit all the contours of your wrist and that helps it lay flatter over time.

Anywey,on this one ivory are those arabic numerals and the hands.
The dial is brushed metalic champagne color.
The bezel is olive, the oposite of kaki that is a crem-beige, the color of the desert. Olive is a colored grey made from the complementary colors red and green with the later dominating the mix. Kaki is from both hindi and somalese as the color of the desert, first used for the indian uniforms on the british colonial army, and later used by the brits from 1890 as the first modern camouflage uniform for desert environment, as oposed to olive used for much less desert areas.

Welcome to the world of watches. I have no idea why natos are so popular. "pooching out" is right. The second pass does nothing regardless of if you wear it the "right" way or the "wrong" way. The long end extra strap fold under bit?? No one ever needs that extra length. Cut off the second pass piece and cut of the extra tail piece that you would fold under/over and you have a much friendlier strap. Use a coin to flame seal the perfect rounded end onto your strap. I heard once, true or not, that nato straps were used to hand watches on a wall for retail display. Cheap strap, but the watch heads would slide off the strap so the extra bit was added to stop that. Still cheaper than a proper strap. True story? Probably not.

The only reason I'd disagree that Orient have over taken Seiko as the "go to" for affordable divers is this - quantity produced and the affect that has on the second hand market. I managed to pick up a King Turtle and a King Samurai 2nd hand, both mint condition, each for barely more than a brand new Kamasu. I do love my Kamasu, but it does have its flaws (good lord the bracelt feels cheap, went straight on a Nato, and if you've got chunky fingers the crowns a bitch), but if you're willing to go into the prowned market you'll find it drowning with Seikos with a slight edge on quality, all at well below half RRP.

My Guy: CUT THE EXTRA KEEPER OFF OF YOUR NATO STRAPS, thereby making them single pass and much more sleek and pleasant to wear. The watch is every bit as secure (you still have a strap passing through each lug bar individually) and the watch sits much more flush an the wrist. I tried it 9nce for kicks and since doing so have henceforth cut off ALL keepers from all of my NATOs; I'll never go back. Even though the extra keeper is only, what, like 2-3 mm thick, having removed it it is makes a world of difference as far as fit and feel while wearing them - MUCH less bulky and more sleek and matural feeling.

Excellent video! I think you could call it champagne however real ivory is actually off white.. They don't use elephant ivory to make piano keys any more. If you can find a very old piano from the 19th and early 20th centuries the white keys will be yellow tinted. Young elephants have white tusks but they become oxidized naturally as they mature. I'm wearing my OLD and reliable Mako XL with the orange bezel and it's a favourite. This Mako is worth the money but you can always find a discount somewhere. Just for the animal lovers out there it was extremely rare that piano keys were made of ivory, mostly from wood and covered with a lacquer. Black keys were made of ebony. Since the 1970's the expensive ones have been made from plastic coated hardwoods and cheaper ones from all plastic resin. So don't feel guilty when playing your piano! 😂

Hi there, new to your channel, just discover it yesterday night while browsing youtube looking for videos just like yours. Thanks for taking the time to do this type of review, really like your perspective and the way you approach affordable options. I'm looking to buy my first mechanical watch and the Invicta Pro Diver is the watch that brought me to your channel, but I also like Bulova and Tissot designs, so your reviews are very helpful to me in particular.
I also came across the Venezianico NEREIDE ULTRALEGGERO 42, that besides having mechanical insights (Seiko NH70A should be good), also has a skeletonized face that I find very appealing. Have you come across this brand/watch? Any thoughts on the brand or model? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Do you realy compare a 300€ Watch with a 550€ Watch? Here in Germany the presented Glycine Combat Sub costs about 500€ to 599€ used (i only find prices for new one directly in Switzerland and they want about 1000€ for it) and the Mako 3 is about 275€ up to 350€. Yes the Combat sub has better bracelet because it costs 200€ more. Maybe better movement? Maybe. It costs 200€ more. So i guess the movement could be a little bit better. But in which terms? The Power Reserve is equal or a little less than Mako. You can make both very accurate. When i compare my cheap Renault Clio (less then 10k new) with a BMW 5 series (starts around 45k), of course the BMW is better in all conditions.... Are Glycine Watches that cheap in US?

The Glycine combat sub is available from Ashford and Jomashop for about $350 in the US. I can’t speak for pricing in any other country. But, “yes” I really did compare those watches.

@@cheapwatchman_official Then it is realy that cheap (compared to European Prices) and the same price region. Okay. This makes sense. I can buy a brand new Mako 3 here in Germany for 249€. (Edit: from authorized Dealer) But no chance getting a new Glycine for under 500€. Funny. 😁

    - For $300+ would you just buy a Seiko with hardlex for the sake of the name brand instead ?

I have the Mako 2 and I don't see enough reason to get a 3 and pay that extra dough. I would rather get a San Martin for that money.

Sorry man, I COMPLETELY disagree with your Glycine assessment. Orient is much better across all its lines.

These youtubers need to learn how to read something other than memes and stop sreading misinformation that "Seiko owns Orient". Epson Seiko (owner of Orient) and Seiko Corporation (owner of Seiko watches) are completely separate, individually managed entities. Orient watches and Seiko watches literally never in history had anything to do with one another.

They're called "Orient", because they're made in the Orient, by Orientals.
