Does affect to the funcionality? I mean, the minute hand goes to the marker properly? Maybe this could become a charming thing about this watch in the future
I ordered the white dial variant but it got cancelled due to this issue. My AD notified me about the issue being sorted out and will be available for purchase again once the new fixed variants arrive. It was nice of Orient to address the issue quickly and back up the customers who bought it through reputed dealers.
I love that you do what no other watch review channel seems to have figured out, and that’s not only are you measuring the diameter of the watch, but the diameter of the bezel as well. To me on a dive watch that is what is going to tell you how big or small it wears along with the diameter of the watch face itself.
I work in the printing and packaging industry. Ive seen this thing happen before. What mostly happened is that the mistake was introduced on the master artwork for the dial and was overlooked on each and every print run and variation. Something so obvious but easily overlooked when its on the whole line. probably took it for granted that the master file was ok and approved and everything was matched and compared to it, further hiding the obvious. pretty sure theres a QA meeting where the prhase "Well, the art matched the approved design.." was said many times.
Yup, thats sounds more than feasable. As it gets further and further down the line in the production process, you just assume it's been further and further checked .. I'm sure there'll be some colon tightening moments for some of the employees when it gets time to debrief 😓
I can almost bet the minute track basic measurements and angles have been handled by several different people to the point where designers had to correct individual values and someone here messed something else that in turn was concatenated to the minute track values lol
Exactly. I've worked in design and seen this kind of thing happen. It usually ends up with the poor designer being asked, "How did you let this happen?" when in fact many people also overlooked it down the QC line. Yikes!
Orient had sent me all six colours to review almost a month ago. And 2 weeks ago they kindly asked me not to review it and I was informed that "all" the watches would be called back. No dial replacement at dealer is allowed! They will be shipped back to Japan(by AD). That's not a bad thing IMO. A clear proof of quality standard Orient is chasing. Yes they made a mistake but what they offer afterwards is making a brand "Good". Cheers Ben. Nice review as always.
I really think they should add a lume pip. The fixed minute track will help, but the bezel really needs SOME kind of lume. Otherwise it's sooo close to perfection, and not quite there. I guess people could make aftermarket bezels, that might be a nice mod option in future...
I was wondering what they meant on the Tus website it says Defective Dial and I thought “that’s kind of odd” but it is a looker for sure. First Orient I really looked at and considered purchasing based off looks alone oh and sapphire too. great channel Ben and as always I appreciate the honest feedback which is paramount to making an informed purchase. cheers
Tbh, this seems like a rather minor issue to me. But I guess, it can be hard to unsee once you've noticed it... I think it worse when hour markers are tilted, or the whole chapter ring is misaligned in one direction or the other.
Yeah, like you say, when the hour markers are off it's definitely more annoying - that said, I've never seen inked minute markers be off on every model, so weird!
Excellent review and I entirely agree with you: how could they miss this in QC? Actually, how come not a single employee among thousands at Orient noticed this terrible defect? This really puts into question the entire company culture. Apart from that, I agree this is a very attractive watch, I might even buy one... when they get them fixed.
Oh my - THIS IS the true beauty of these watches! :D I don't know if I'm the only one who doesn't treat it as an issue, because in fact it's not ANY issue at all. Sure, the print is not accurate, but in the case of "tropical dials", typos, etc. Wasn't it just about such unplanned mishaps? ;)
I’ve actually had two major QA issues with two different brands, notably with my OCW S100 and Reserve Automatic. I was able to get a replacement for one, and a correction for the other.
I have to agree, the Mako sport has a nice looking dial and the hour markers and superb, with the violet color dial being lovely, however the nato leather strap is what pulls it down as well as the thickness. The minute marker design is a bit of a boob!
That error would drive me up the wall and give me sleepless nights. I'd have been gutted to have saved up, ordered it and then got that through the post. That's a lot of money for me, especially in these times.
There were several smaller youtubers addressing the issue in the past few weeks but not much noises. Ben is probably the first established youtuber to nail the review, hope this could escalate the issue and make Orient rectify the mess.
Thanks for give us valuable information. I am about to scoop this one up, but after watching your video I think I will wait until they fix the printed marker.
I'm just glad they decided to increase the crown size. My Kamasu crown is so small it's like shaking hands with a kitten and damn near impossible to screw and unscrew.
Not talking about the flaw here, but lately I feel like an Orient collector. The have one of the best, if not the best, affordable watch for every category.
I was hoping you would go ahead and make recommendations for a new band that will fit it, that's still possible right? For when the replacement comes out?
Well I guess the reason why they don't call it the Mako Sport striaght is that, they are having different naming scheme across the countries. Here in Taiwan, the beloved Bambino is called DATE or DATE II depending on the design and the strap that it comes with, sometimes just simply Classic. These three together, along with some Helios, the fake moon phase watches which we called "Sun & Moon" series and other skeletonized watch, all under the "Oritnet Classic" category. And this Mako Sport you are featuring in the video, is called "Water Resistant" series, while the series contains other watches from non-Mako sports watches you have in the US.
While not a fan of the purple/lavender color I absolutely love this design. I'd go as far as saying this is the everyday desk diver I've been waiting for, although half size crown guards would make it better. As for the printing error, I agree; it's an unacceptable process mistake from a reputable company. But still...now I kind of want one with the error.
Ben could say the error makes the watch infamous in a way the watchmaker hadn’t counted on. Perfection is in the eye of the beholder and even a flawed diver’s watch is still a diver’s watch! 😊
Hi Ben, A little off topic here, but i recently bought a used watch that is generally in excellent condition apart from the scratch marks on the ends of the lugs from were the previous owner changed straps. Where would you take the watch to have the scratches removed and the brushed finish restored? Thanks, Al.
Not only do I not mind the error, I kind of want one. Looks like the ones with the print error are all gone. Either way, orient really hit a home run with this watch. The second I saw it I said that’s a beautiful watch. The lack of crown guard really improves the look. The unpainted bezel. The smaller size. The date with no day, the dial, it’s all beautiful. And sapphire crystal. This is going to be an instant classic. An affordable, beautiful dive watch with a rugged in house movement. The new SKX?

But nice from Orient to react on it and correct the issue nonetheless. With or without this small mistake it is a gorgeous watch and I still have more faith in Orient than it's bigger brother. That price for an in house movement (and a good one) and such an unique and nice design, thank to Orient for still existing and keeping availability at reasonnable pricing.

Yeah, I generally wear the Lineage 60%+ of days. That said, it does fit me marginally better than the S100, as I have tiny wrists, so that could play a part. One thing I have found since is that for international travel, I've ended up preferring the crown on the S100, as it's easier to change timezones - you don't need to remember a whole list of button commands
You bet Ben this will be a sought after watch with that minute line mistake! The watches that don't get returned and fixed will be a rare watch and will be highly collectible.
watch is nice.. vibes more Explorer II than diver because of the bezel... I have a Mako I and this looks like an improvement... minus the dial minute marker mess-up... there goes Japanese quality control.. but maybe these first ones will end up as collector items.. ha ha
From this error aside, one question begs me about price (general in this tier). Usually a revision of a mechanical watch costs several hundred euros/poundss. So, is this Orient even worth to revision when it costs less new?
And there was I thinking that maybe it was an anti-forgery device - a bit like the "secret" signatures on Cartier and Breguet dials... 😂 The Ordnance Survey used to put minor deliberate errors on some of their maps to detect/prevent copying.
Well I never , all this rather timely as Orient finally have a UK branch on the horizon looking to promote the brand in various fashions etc , but kudos for the acknowledgement & fix on this .
