The customer was not covered by the insurance company for this repair. I always clean plates to get people up and running. I get paid the same to walk out or temp repair. The customer was aware they needed a power flush after my visit.
Pre existing magnetite and poor quality water before fitting filter - system has to be squeaky clean and dosed with right amount of inhibitor otherwise dirty system water will progressively worsen
@@hdhanji8006 But how does the larger particles ie. larger than 1 to 2mm pass through both the filters without getting caught?????? The physical filter holes are only 0.1 mm wide!!!!!!! The derbies are around 4 to 10 mm wide and massive!!!!! Both filters have been installed from the beginning . Is it possible that they got trough the FLOW side by some kind of negative pressure force ??????
Because the debris was already inside the appliance when the filter was fitted. Or the chemicals used to protect the system are baking out of the water on to the main heat exchanger, then flaking off and blocking the plate. Also magnetic filters dont work 100%.
@@Han-es8qu Old boiler internals would have been contaminated I assume and not thoroughly cleaned, if the heating side of the system is clean and debris still found inside boiler :) Sorry HG, didn't realise you replied to the fella

@@HeatingGeek fully understand that but in the long run they just going to have problem after problem. All you can do is advise and if they dont take it then just keep turning up and taking the money to repair faults that come with not having a magnaclean and good power flush. Keep up the good work
Why pulling the plate exchanger out when if you would have installed proper valves with drain house connections could use a pump in the bucket to do the cleaning. Also should install dirt separator on that boiler. That was some powerful cleaning solution!
@@HeatingGeek Oh Ok. If can be done that fest why not, Thanks for the reply . It would be a good idea to add some cleaning solution to system , then drain it and ad boiler protect solution after that. That was one filthy plate exchanger.
I have 2 wet vacs but prefer a couple of buckets. I do get the wet vacs out at least once a week though. I have made more messes in customers houses with wet vacs than any other tool :-)
All these lot saying it needs a Magnaclean - obvious newbies. Magnacleans weren't even invented when this boiler was being fitted. Yes retrofitting one would be lovely, but its worked for 15 or so years without one, a new plate / cleaned plate will see this thing out till it dies of economic obsolescence. Why fit a £200 filter to a 15+ year old boiler it won't even be in the house in 5 years and the next boiler will probably come with one long as the installer is decent. I used to clean plates out in the decade before Magnacleans were invented and a well cleaned plate with a few hot flushes will last long enough for a boiler like this
If people were to protect their heating systems from corrosion and hard water properly, we would all be out of work. Thank god for piss poor installation keeping us all busy.
Hi, I work for one of the manufacturers of plate heat exchangers. We do not advise using Hydrochloric acid (spirit of salts) as it can actually cause corrosion. There are other weaker acids which can do the job such as phosphoric or oxalic and will not damage the heat exchanger.
Its not in there long enough. I have been doing this for nearly 10 years like this. Never had a problem. I know it will damage the heat exchanger if left in. Exactly what product do you recommend? I will try it out. :-)
@@HeatingGeek That's fair enough. Generally it will not cause damage if flushed immediately after as you say, however the heat exchangers are made to last and can last for 15 years if treated correctly. Using a strong acid will reduce lifetime from 15 years to 8-10 years. You probably won't see any problems as other parts in a boiler will go before this timeframe. I cannot recommend particular products for obvious reasons, but look for ones containing mineral acids such as phosphoric or oxalic acid. Even acetic acid will work (vinegar).
@@1991elliot For the job I do customers have 2 options. A quick blast with spirits of salt or a new heat exchanger. I get a fixed cost for my time so its very important (To me) that the job is quick. I will give what you say a go and see what works. Thanks for the reply. I will not forget phosphoric or oxalic acid. I have tried vinegar with little success. :-)
Try not to show everything out here on RUclips because there are diy ppl or home owners who will start doing these job themselves even though they not gas safe and it just means gas engineers out there might lose some jobs not saying everyone will but try to not show everything because a gas engineer should know most of these stuff already. Why pulling the plate exchanger out when if you would have installed proper valves with drain house connections could use a pump in the bucket to do the cleaning. Also should install dirt separator on that boiler. That was some powerful cleaning solution!
Too much faffing. `easy to remove and clean and refit. I can do this job in 1 hour.
@@HeatingGeek Oh Ok. If can be done that fest why not, Thanks for the reply . It would be a good idea to add some cleaning solution to system , then drain it and ad boiler protect solution after that. That was one filthy plate exchanger.
@@786otto It would be good however the customer is on an insurance contract that doesn't even cover the reapir I did. ;-) I cant do any more :-)
Really don't understand why more engineers don't use a wet vac? Saves loads of time.
I have 2 wet vacs but prefer a couple of buckets. I do get the wet vacs out at least once a week though. I have made more messes in customers houses with wet vacs than any other tool :-)
Super hard geezer skin! Haha! 😄
Did you notice the gas meter outlet supply pipe off the meter was not ridged pipe ?🤨
Yes. When someone commented on here. Pipework was clipped and the meter was fixed to the wall. I'm not worried.:-/
HeatingGeek That’s would be my way of thinking to as long as it’s clipped and meter on a bracket leave it just creating work for yourself
@@stevenyearnshire1624 What meter ;-) Just edit that out :-)
HeatingGeek 😂😂
Do you think you might be encouraging non gas safe engineers to try and repair their own boiler?
I hope not. But people were doing it before and will continue to do it now.
At 2:00 look at the gas meter - that looks like an anaconda on the outlet naughty naughty
Yep. I missed that. :-0
HeatingGeek haha you will not have been the first so when you point it out to the customer they say the last x no of engineers didn’t say anything!!
It needed a filter fitting.
It needs a powerflush too. :-)
I used to clean plates out in the decade before Magnacleans were invented and a well cleaned plate with a few hot flushes will last long enough for a boiler like this
Plates will usually last a while. Not always but generally at least 6 months and some I have had last 5 years after being replaced.
If people were to protect their heating systems from corrosion and hard water properly, we would all be out of work. Thank god for piss poor installation keeping us all busy.
:-) and the terrible boilers some manufacturers put out there, :-)
Dark cupboard? Empty pantry perhaps. Always go for a piss check prior to diagnosis.
Piss Check?
@@HeatingGeek I thought that was what you call taking a leak, in England 🤓
@@jeffreyjohn2037 :-) Where are based?
@@HeatingGeek I'm from New England.
Windsor, Connecticut. And a third generation steam boiler technician.
@@jeffreyjohn2037 Thats sounds like nice work. I guess they are large communal/district heating plant? Or is it more for process?
Good video tho
I get what you're saying. Should I cut out more of the basic stuff? Like draining etc? Where do you draw the line as such? :-)
HeatingGeek yes like draining stuff... isolating main, flow and return and other basic things. Cheers buddy I have done two of these last week. Great video tho
@@Khalid-jw8bq Ok, Fair enough. :-) I will try and remember to do that. :-)
