How to turn off automatic updates in Windows 10 permanently

  • Windows updates are important, but sometimes they happen at inconvenient times. Windows 10 makes it possible to pause or disable automatic updates, giving you more control over when the updates occur. If you're using Windows 10 Home, you are only able to pause updates for up to 35 days. If you're using Windows 10 Pro, you are given the option to permanently disable automatic updates by editing your group policy. In this video, Mike will show you both ways of pausing and/or disabling updates on both Windows 10 Home and Pro.

I know he meant well, but all I needed was a Windows system to download the Spooky2 Rife machine software. The Spooky2 generators run the Rife frequencies which need to run uninterrupted, sometimes 24/7 for 11 days! No wifi or ethernet connection necessary. In addition to permanently disabling automatic updates, I've learned how to turn off the wifi connection and setting the sleep mode to "Never." You,, sir, CLEARLY explained and demonstrated how to permanently disable automatic updates. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Excellent video, very concise. I'm turning them off permanently (Win 10 Pro) as after the last update (Aug 2022) my PC wouldn't re-boot and I tried everything to get get it back before re-installing from a partition backup. Even Windows 10 repair wouldn't work. Foolishly I allowed it to update again with exactly the same result so now I'm reinstalling the partition and this time turning them off permanently. I'm not even sure where my WIn10 licence number is and don't want to go through re-installing loads of software, some of which is licence protected over the internet and I may not be able to get the licence back again without paying exorbitant sums.

    Every time I let Windows install the update for Windows 10, suddenly my sound card no longer works, and I'm forced to spend hours rolling back the system to the previous version of Windows 10. The say it's a huge pain in the @ would be an understatement. So far I've tried several tutorials on how to prevent the Windows 10 update, and NONE of them have worked. Here goes attempt number 7.

      @@mikerodrick5354: I'm back again. Sorry I didn't see your response from last time. I was able to pause the update for a period of time. In fact I believe I've paused it a couple of times since I posted my original comment here, but here we are again with it trying to install the latest version of Windows 10. I think I'm at the end of my Windows 10 pause allowances, as now the longest it allows me to pause updates in the custom settings is eight days from now.
      I have a Dell XPS 8910 Desktop computer, and the couple of times in the past where it did update to the newest Windows 10, and screwed up my sound card, I'd call Dell tech support, and they'd try everything to fix the problem, but ultimately there was never any solution other than rolling it back to the previous version of Windows 10. Even tech support wasn't able to find a solution that worked and played well with the latest version of 10. I am running Windows 10 Home Edition. I'm no expert and there are a few things listed under my "Sound, video and game controllers" drop down, but I do believe my sound card is listed as "High Definition Audio Device." From doing some research tonight, it seems my sound card make and model installed from Dell is listed as:
      Device Name: Realtek Audio
      Hardware ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0899&SUBSYS_1028072A&REV_1000
      I don't know if this tells you anything, but it sure doesn't me.
      Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated, as I now have only eight days to figure something out.
      Thanks

      I would not recommend turning them off. Sometimes it is necessary, like when developing an app and you don't want the machine config to change. But only temporarily, you should turn them back on when possible. If you want more control, you can disable them and then check manually, but it is still important to check. Without updates, we put our systems at unnecessary risk. Some of the cumulative updates can take a while in the first reboot, but should go back to normal after that.

    I need to block feature update in windows update indefinitely, and be in control with my EPM tool.

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      Feature updates are optional, you do not need to install them as long as the version of Windows 10 is still supported. In an enterprise environment, you should be using update management, like WSUS. Consider moving to Windows 10 LTSC, which only gets feature updates every 2-3 years, instead of every 6 months. docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/whats-new/ltsc/

    so what I came to is: if ou want to make it permanent on windows 10 home, you'll have to update the 35 days of not updating aproximately once a month, since there are no group polic tools available.
    Since every non-security related update of windows from the past year or so just made it fatter (take up more disc space) and added useless functions that I'd never use, on the other hand, find a pain in the a$$ to deal with. Like when they first added the "news and interests" tab or whatever it was called, without the deactivate option. That was a royal pain in my butt for sure.

    This video does not show how to turn off Automatic update for Windows 10 home. It only shows how to pause it. You can turn it off by stopping and disabling "windows update" service under services app. If you don’t want it to come back, under Recovery tab change first failure to “take no action” and set Reset fail count after to zero days.

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      I haven't tried that method, hope it works. Microsoft has a tendency to turn the service back on the next update cycle, even when you disable it.

    Thanks for this! I switched back over from Ubuntu to Windows a few years back because I wanted to start working with a lot of Adobe software. Windows is a pain in the a**.
    Last night I had a lot of documents open because I was working on something. I was looking forward to getting back to work this morning and I realized that the computer had restarted. Dude, its like, if I were in the office and some idiot were to come over and restart my computer without asking, I'd give them a knuckle sandwich. Why does it make it ok for Windows to restart you computer without asking?

    I loved the feature in Windows 7 Pro, where I could opt to be notified of updates & then see lists of priority & optional updates, & choose the ones I wanted to install (like all the security updates). Is there any way to configure updates in Windows 10 so I get the security updates but not all the other "features" (like Edge Chromium)?

    • @mikerodrick5354
      @mikerodrick5354 3 года назад

      Not really. You can pause updates on Windows 10 Home, and disable them on Pro and Enterprise versions.

      There is a program called StopUpdates10. It is supposed to stop all updates for as long as you want. It is free at: greatis stopupdates10. Do a virustotal scan before using. Use at your own risk. I am using Win7 Pro because of Microsofts Telemetry. I have not found a way to completely stop Telemetry. The only thing to do is to enter every url W10 tries to connect into my hardware routers block list. LMK if you know how to completely stop all Telemetry.

    I understand the concept behind updates but the fact Microsoft all but forces them on the home version is enraging. I have attempted to turn them off and last night they went through anyway and now my perfectly working laptop is worthless and won't load beyond the startup screen. I paid 1200$ for this computer and I should decide if I want to update the software or not. When a computer becomes a little bit older, it isn't made to run the most recent version of OS software so updates can destroy them. Ridiculous.
