  • After months of fixing everything wrong mechanically on my 1995 BMW 530i manual V8, the thing decides to self-destruct within 20 minutes of me driving it! Turns out M539 Restorations isn't the only channel to have BMW engine issues on the first drive...

    Flip it? Flip it? Sacré bleu! Are you nuts? This baby is a classic dude, you even get e39 owners stopping to admire and acknowledge the elegance that is the e34. Despite several missing pieces of trim she sounds sweet and virtually silent. She's even psychic dude, she saved you from being stranded on the freeway by breaking down in a nice convenient place, this baby is looking out for you dude! These e34's are going up in value and yours is particularly rare being a short production run V8 530i with manual gearbox...and she's pretty! Notice how I repeatedly use the pronoun 'she' for what is in essence an inanimate object in order to make you feel guilty at even suggesting 'flip'ing it. Keep it bro and enjoy!

    I’m the original owner of a 1995 e34 525i 5 speed. Couple years ago I replaced the suspension with Bilstein B6 struts and shocks. Very happy with the results. A little more responsive without sacrificing comfort. Replace the plastic water pump pulley with aluminum pulley and replace the plastic thermostat housing with a metal one. You will thank me later. Good luck eh! George Kern your cousin in Detroit. Cheers!

      Thanks George! Metal water pump pulley is already en route, metal water pump housing will be next on the list. Did you go for lowered springs with the B6’s?

    • @georgekern6528
      @georgekern6528 2 года назад +1

      No I didn’t lower it. I’m a pretty much straight up stock guy. I’ve done all my own wrenching on it since new. Just finished the vanos seal refresh

      Good for you, wrenching on it for over 20 years that’s amazing

    The E34 is a classic and I would certainly hold on to it, not only because it is almost bulletproof but also because it drives well and the prices are increasing. I own an 1991 E34 Alpina complete stock and in mint condition and am very happy with the suspension setup. It is sporty without losing to much comfort, thanks also to Bilstein.
    Keep it up, restore your car and enjoy it for years.

    My E38 left me stranded at Costco after gassing it up. Car would not start. Had it towed home. Found that the electronically controlled thermostat coil had shorted taking in the process a few fuses leading to the ECU. Fairly easy fix. Now I carry some spare 30A fuses with me just in case.

    So many things to appreciate here, a nice cruise up Toronto's finest street known as VP strip and the 5 series looking out for you by breaking down right before the 401. All things considered BMW owners are a lucky a bunch! :)

    i would say keep it and restore it, put M-technic suspension on it those where original on the M-tech edition and made the ride more sporty with more road and steering feel without ruining the comfort wich could happen easy with hard aftermarket stuff

  • @dennisspors7530

    I completely changed all the suspension components and installed Bilstein shocks to the standard specs. These components just get old over time.

  • @GalvanizedGreatness

    It probably doesn’t seem so but keeping the 530 would make sense in the long term since there already hard to come by especially with a manual I personally only seen

    • @DeadEndRestorations
      @DeadEndRestorations  2 года назад

      I think you’re right, long term they will only get more rare as more e34s unfortunately rust out especially on east coast

    I had a worn starter solenoid on my E34. I would drive it to wherever and come back to a no crank situation. Would wait half an hour and it'll crank right up again. I did this for about 2 months before I got the starter replaced lol. Easily could have screwed myself.

    The e34 is the high-water mark of BMW production. Simple, yet modern and safe in operation. It lends itself to daily operation, if required, and parts are readily available.
    The 530's ZF310/320 gearbox is bulletproof and 100% rebuildable (all parts are available), unlike the increasingly problematic 6 speed Getrag 420G used on the e34 540i, that cannot be rebuilt. I'd be inclined to swap a pampered M60b40 (from an e32/e34 or '95 e38) in and keep it forever. That would make for great content.
    BTW...there is an aftermarket aluminium water pump pulley made by Uro. It'll solve that cracking plastic vulnerability.

    • @DeadEndRestorations
      @DeadEndRestorations  2 года назад +2

      Thanks Francis! The Uro pulley is coming tomorrow thankfully, I thought about m60b40 swap but my motor has such low kms and rare would be a shame to rip it out altho the extra power would be welcome! Agreed overall, the e34 is the pinnacle of 90s bmw engineering

    I loved my E34. You could turn the wheel by several degrees either way before any realistic movement at the front wheels, it leaked oil from every gasket, there was a crack in the fuel tank that meant that you could only put 10 litres of fuel in it otherwise it leaked, the Vanos was knackered.
    I sold it for parts in the end.

    I have a e46 and was replacing the ccv intake manifold off job, was taking the fuel rail off and the fuel line just came straight off now I know that fuel line is not supposed to pop right off but me being me I reused the part and boy did I regret it, drove couple days no issues one day there’s a very bad smell of petrol I assume ah it’s an oldish car they do smell sometimes big mistake, drove it the smell was extremely strong and my fuel gauge was just going down at an alarming rate, I knew exactly what the issue was. Luckily my friend was nearby he grabbed the fuel line out his project 46 and came to the rescue and we replaced it in the rain. Avoided burning my baby to ground and I’ll never allow myself to put faulty parts back on a car for times sake.

    • @DeadEndRestorations
      @DeadEndRestorations  2 года назад

      On the front of the engine, there are two idler pulleys that the belt passes around, and the tensioner id between those two pulleys. Its a black spring about 10cm long
