Abandoned for 50 YEARS! 1955 Plymouth Plaza Air Force Military Station Wagon! Will It Run?!?

  • Опубликовано: 19 май 2024
  • A friend of mine picked up this 1955 Plymouth Plaza Suburban station wagon locally last winter and I was able to make a deal to purchase it from him to attempt to get it running for the first time since 1972. It started life as a vehicle for the Air Force in Grand Forks, ND and was traded in to a dealer in Cooperstown, ND. From there it went to life on a farm pulling a hay wagon until the clutch burned out in the early 1970s where it rested until December 2023. Let's see if we can get this thing to breath fire once again! If you'd like to add this vehicle to your fleet it can be yours in the as shown condition (No title) for the low, low price of only $2,500 USD! As always, thanks for watching!

      The wagon was usually the utility farm vehicle not very many vans and i say that because most farmers either had to use the family farm truck or car for almost everything alot of them couldn't afford to buy a new vehicle only used to haul the family around and only to drive to work.... And to be honest it the mid 70's station wagons and the newer ones i don't care for..

    On a more serious note , I had two Plymouths , A 54 no name flat six that was indestructible , the things I did to that car , I'm ashamed of . A 66 savoy , green and white flat six that was like brand new , I paid $25. oo for it and drove it into the ground . Both cars owed me nothing and lasted longer than they should . Oh the days of wine and roses ( NOT ) . That station wagon will make somebody a believer in the days when things cost a whole lot less and were built to last forever . Thanks for the memories , I'm going to be eighty next year , Ive seen a few things , more to come in future episodes , Stuart in Canada ..

    The Air Force Plaza Plymouth, this is just one of those sweet puppy dog eyes and ears cars for me. Yo just look at it and fall in love with the darn thang. Toss some new floors on it and run the buffer over the paint and you’ve got a nice patina cruiser here. Toss in a newer 275-300 hp v6 with a 5 or 6 speed and you’ve got a cool car here. Everyone always goes v8 but the plaza stripper needs to keep it six. This car is light enough that you get plenty of scat with a smaller motor. The steering linkage is one of the more unusual one I have seen. The trunnion bushing front end doesn’t bother me as it was a common design in this period. Ball joint was the new up and coming technology of the time.

    That’s all thanks to you, Mort.
    Imagine taking a Tesla out of the woods 50 years from now and trying to get it to run.
    Watching you tending Detroit Iron and stream of consciousness with Duff Dog is the best thing on the internet.
    Appreciate the hard work. We know the feeling of every cut, nick, ding, abrasion, workload hassles, client and vendor time, bookkeeping, spills and cleanup, putting on the boots in the morning, not knowing what day it is because it’s all work all the time when you’re solo, running an industrial shop…and still maintaining the Mortske Flick of humor. In any B-17 Group you’d be the go to engineer; top turret in the Memphis Belle. Love The Duff!

    Too cool! Back in the day my big brother had a 55 Plymouth! That car had a lot of low end grunt & my bro pulled a lot of cars out of ditches & snowbanks. We’re talking upper Michigan averaging 300 plus inches of snow! Would be cool to see an early hemi from hot heads with a 4 speed & positrack rear. All I can afford to do is dream about hot rods & watch you give these old rods new life! Keep on having fun rebuilding these old hoop ties & I’ll have fun watching you build.

    Another great episode! I really like the off-brand and less popular cars. BTW, the plug and hole in the head is for measuring the piston height to find TCD with a piece of wire. I had an industrial 230 in an old Yale forklift. The hole was useful for double checking the timing chain (finding the industrial version was difficult and I needed to double check that it was correct).

    I had one of those infamous six cylinders in a Cranbrook. I pulled into the driveway after school, and the chassis rail under the driver's seat let go. So much for this 15-dollar car, Junkyards at the time were charging for towing away scrap. So, I put a cup of dry lapping compound down the oil filler, started the engine, put a brick on the gas pedal, and went in the house, changed my clothes, came out, took care of my dog, gave him his weekly bath, and played catch with him for a while. The engine ran until it ran out of gas it never did blow up.

    I think this is my favorite Mortske car of 2024. It would make a magnificent dog wagon. Base model with less trim and accessories is less stuff to find at a swap meet. Definitely needs a brake upgrade. I'd pull the body off the frame to do the floor and swap the powertrain. Maybe a 300 inline Ford or a 4200 Vortec. I actually like the color so I might skip fixing body damage.

      @c0c0asauce 13 дней назад +3

      @@Awsom47Merc That would be quite the sleeper but after all the reinforcement there wouldn't much of the original frame left. One of those 392 hemis could get it moving pretty good and still have that bare bones look to it with the right accoutrements.

      @@Awsom47Merc Oh holy crap, I would have figured it would be fairly light. I have a 1UZFE swap in my 95 Nissan pickup and that motor only makes about 250hp but it weighs 250lbs. Actually makes a truck with manual steering easier to drive than with the iron block 4 cylinder.

      @@c0c0asauce No the 1st gen hemis are crazy heavy and they don't have normal motor mounts (on sides of engine) they have a large bracket that mounts under the water pump in front of engine and a crossmember under the bellhousing.

    Great start up on the flat 6, but on the quick change housing, could you get a flat surface machined for a bearing holder then match drill the mounting holes life putting 4 bolt main caps on a 2 bolt block. To restore the quick change housing???? Hate to see it like that. Good Video Thanks, D
