I was shot with a 22 pistol when i was 15. A kid I thought was my friend stole a gun and shot me when we got off the school bus. I found out later it was because he was jealous a certain female liked me instead of him. Anyway, that bullet went in one side of my neck (just under curve in my chin) ricochet off my neck bone and was protruding out of the other side of my neck. He was aiming the gun at an upward trajectory but as soon as the bullet entered my body it reversed course. I was blessed to have survived. Even the surgeons couldn't believe how this bullet weaved itself around my carotid artery and my spine, along with all the other deadly paths it could have taken. I walked out of the hospital the next morning. Needless to say, a 22 pistol is no joke!

"A .22 will kill further than you can shoot it accurately." This is something we have always known and what makes .22lr problematic even for things like plinking cans. That round is dangerous and for a long way. I used to live in a rural community. I had a near neighbor that was on his tractor, plowing a field. He said he felt something like a bee sting, looked down and saw blood on his overalls pant leg. He went up town to the doctor who explained that he had been shot. There was no one around. He didn't see anyone. he just felt something slam into his leg.

Sad part is, there are A LOT of "total dumb ass's" on the internet and in the gun community, all you have to do is read all the comments on RUclips or any gun forum whenever a person poses the question, "can you use a 22 for personal defense". Way to many people down play the lethality of a 22, or they poo poo anyone who uses it as their EDC (there are many legitimate reasons why some would use a 22 for personal defense). The caliber debate/chest thumping that goes on is hilarious. Like these guys say, "getting shot is getting shot." My wife carries a SR22. no freaking way would I ever want to get shot with it. I wish I could get a quarter for every time I have heard or read somebody say, "shooting a person with a 22 will just piss them off." Freaking foolishness!!! There is no magic bullet, and I for one wouldn't want to get shot by ANY caliber. There are several studies that show most pistol calibers take an average of three shots to stop a threat, from a 22 up to a 45. Shot placement is king, not bullet size. ~Ken

I learned to shoot with the .22LR when I was a teenager. It not only teaches you how to get accurate, but it's invaluable for pest control and small game hunting. If there was ever an emergency, the .22LR should be there to provide meat for the pot or to train your children to defend themselves against a threat.

The only thing the size of a bullet changes is the impact power and size of the hole that is going to be left in your target. A bullet, let alone a pellet fired from the right air rifle, will harm or kill depending on where it's fired.

He did kill coyotes with it; some he wounded because it was dark, but we found later on dead. Also tried a 410 shot gun on a bob cat, but switched to the .22 due to the distance. These guys are right. .22 can and will drop something with some weight to it. However, with a .22, you better be a damn good shot with an eagle eye.

Donna, read my comment above. That idiot's attitude is shared over at the FAL Files website by the majority. When they could not dissuade me, they started profaning the women of the group I was in. I know for a fact dedicated women of any age can keep bad guys heads down within 300 yards with 22s. It is relatively easy to point in their general direction and fire a controlled group.

I found out the hard way about how powerful a 22 is when I was a kid. I was under the impression that they were not much more than a high powered BB gun by the way people talked about them in comparison to other guns. I grabbed one of the 22 LR we had and took it outside when nobody was home. Dad had a brand new enclosed aluminum trailer that was a good 100 yards from where I was standing and I wanted to see if I could hear the round bounce off of it. I pulled the trigger then went to see if I could find where I hit it and there was a friggin hole about the size of a dime where it had been struck! The trailer was black and it also peeled the paint off around the hole, so it was very obvious. I about crapped my pants, then covered it with electrical tape hoping to God dad never noticed. I got away with it for about 2 Weekes and then all hell broke loose. Needless to say, I didn't test the power of anymore weapons around the house and I'm damn glad I didn't test it out on one of my buddies ass the way we'd do with bb guns sometimes when they were least expecting. Ah, the joys of growingup in the country. Lmao 🤣🤣🤣

I, as a nurse for 27 years, have looked after many a gunshot victim. My first was a bloke who went with 3 mates to ‘have a chat’ with a guy who was harassing on of the mate’s girlfriend ( the guy was her long-time ex). As they pulled up and exited their vehicle, he ambushed them from the front window of his house with a WW2 Lee Enfield .22 trainer he had ‘obtained’ and Bubbafied ( sawn off stock and barrel etc).
My patient took a shot to his left cheek, about 3cm below the outer corner of the eye, which fragmented on hitting (and shattering) the cheekbone. One fragment ended up on the other side of his nose ( travelling under the skin, not through the nasal passages), one large fragment was down near his Adam’s apple, and had ‘chewed’ a pathway just missing everything vital, and lots of other specks throughout his head and neck. Surgery took about 6 hours to get as much of the powdered lead out as possible. Very lucky it didn’t go through the eye socket or temple, where the bone is much thinner.

She grabbed the first thing available and took the shot. As far as I know she shot him through the nasal cavity or the ocular cavity and took the beast down. Years later at the range I was teaching my wife to shoot my Buckmark. After a few magazines she looked over at the guys shooting the 9mm and asked if she could shoot a real gun. The point is; just because it makes a bigger bang doesn't mean the .22 is any less real. It'll do the job often enough.

I am happy to see someone conduct a video on the supposedly lowly .22. I was a CLEET certified police officer for about 6 years. The .22 Short, or LR is FAR more lethal than folks, who are not gun oriented or knowable realize. The little round, in many shootercircles, is called the "ricochet round" or the "bouncing bullet", because, while it can be an extremely accurate round in the target rifle or pistol firearm, it tends to go :"unstable"when it hits a human or animal target. The round, kills primarily hemorrhaging, rather than by hydrostatic shock. IF you are hit in the upper torso by this lethal little bullet, you will more than likely "bleed out" long before medical help can stop the bleed. This isalso an excellent video on .22 penetration. Regardless of the expansion of the hollow point round beyond 25 yards (from another video on here), the round will penetrate deepenough to cause the person some very serious, life threating concerns. NEVER under estimate the lethality of this bullet, EVER! Treat it with the same respect you would of ANY firearm round.

When I was a kid I did competitive target shooting with peep sights @ 25 yards. The Anschutz target rifle I owned was as accurate as I could get it, and won me 3 high-gun trophies 3years in a row. I purchased a Bushnell scope for it and could consistently put 5 shots in a 1" group at 100 yards, and spreading a little the further away I went. I never had any doubts about the fact that the gun could kill me or someone else, especially nowadays when you see youtubers shooting a feral pig with a pellet gun and killing it. Was an awesome rifle. 10 shots into a dime @ 25yds

My dad & my mom both have killed moose on our homestead outside of Anchorage, Alaska with this same rifle. My dad was in the Army, stationed at Ft. Richardson, just outside of Anchorage. He got home one evening to meet mom at the door, pointing out to the vegetable garden. She said, "that THING" was eating our dinner. It needs to go into the freezer! She had dropped it with one shot behind the ear and it landed in the lettuce patch. She had no patience with anyone or anything tromping through her garden... the neighbor's dog just wasn't likely to end up in the freezer. ;^)

      @quentagonthornton49 2 года назад +1

@@Kony20202 Something like the Aguila Sniper Subsonic 60 grain ammunition would probably do better at longer ranges because heavier bullets retain energy at longer ranges better. This is why bullets that range from 80-90 grains are used for shooting 5.56 at around 1000 yards instead of the normal 55 or 62 grain bullets. .22 LR isn't a whole lot above the sound barrier even with loads with light bullets, and at 400 yards, no .22 LR would stay supersonic throughout its flight which can cause stability issues as the bullet transitions from supersonic to subsonic flight.

I used to teach gun safety in the Boy Scout camp I worked at as a teenager. The video well describes the power of a .22. What is left out, though, is that all people intending to have a .22 around should be made aware that, though it may not be accurate beyond what was shown here, it can still injure and kill at much greater distances. This is important when training to use one as the user should always be aware that an incautious shot can kill even when not aimed deliberately at someone a long way away. We used to figure at least a mile, but it could be more as I do not know if that was field tested. Some people think that if they shoot into the air that a bullet will somehow not be lethal, but there are many cases of deaths by bullets fired celebrating the 4th of July.
Rules we taught included, among others:
Treat every gun as if it were loaded.
Watch where you point a gun when carrying it.
Don't point it at anything or anyone you do not intend on shooting.
Fire only when you can see your target and what you will be hitting.
Fire only when you have cleared the background behind your target.
If you get a misfire, it can still go off at any time. Clear the round carefully.
When I was first being taught gun safety, an older gentleman was telling us about hunting elk. He saw one standing silently on a ridge and took aim. But something caught his attention. There was a strange shift in shadow behind that animal. Turns out that a man on a horse was on the next ridge beyond and perfectly lined up behind the elk. His horse would drop its head occasionally to crop some grass. When he did so, it blocked out some sunlight and that is what caught our hunter's attention. Had he fired, even if he had hit the elk, the bullet could have passed through and still hit the horse or rider.
As a young man I read an article about a minister in Africa who liked to hunt lions, and he used a .22 rifle!

The big secret people don't remember is that a 22 will bounce around on the inside. That's why they were feared. A larger caliber might go through you, but 22 will more than likely stay in you and often bounce around causing more damage. My husband did a stint in an ER and the docs hated the 22 because it was hardly ever by the entrance wound.

I've read many times that the mafia types always used a 22. One, it's quiet compared to a 44, 45 or other common round back then. Second, it kills people dead. Third, dirt cheap bullet and gun to usually. I saw this on a history show once. The bullet has enough energy to get inside the skull but once in, it just bounces around ripping up the brain until it stops. If that thing bounces around even once or twice, the brain is going to look pretty bad. Death is certain. I don't recall ever hearing about anyone surviving the little .22 round.
This may explain why I have a fat 50 ammo can of loose 22 ammo. Plus another can of boxed ammo. If any Govt types want to see them, they sunk with my boat. lol Guns too. :-)

Bullets very seldom tumble. Tumbling requires a full 360 degree rotation nose to base to nose again. Once a bullet yaws 180 degrees it usually stays that orientation especially if the nose has mushroomed as the expanded part acts like a drag parachute. Watching bullet tracks in ballistic gel demonstrates that. If it were yawing broadside there would be more than one wide spot in the track as it turned sideways.

Back in 1948 when my dad was 13 years old he shot a 22lr at my granddads barn at about 400 yards well the barn was about a inch thick pine wood but the 22lr hit the barn went in the side of the barn and hit my granddads prized cow in the head and killed it dead so a 22lr is way underrated

This is important from a safety perspective as well. You need to really think about what is BEHIND your target. At 450 yards is 26% of a mile, and the rounds can certainly travel a maximum of a mile or more.

Thank you for this vid. I've been trying to convince friends that a 0.22 pistol is an effective defensive weapon, especially if it's a high capacity and you are a decent shot. We had five men stab a 2x4 with a knife as hard as they could and they all agreed that they would have neutralized the target. All of the knife jabs made it into maybe 1/4" through the 2x4. We then took a small compact 0.22 and shot the same 2x4 at a 25foot distance. That "small" 0.22 went all the way through and created more damage than five men with a knife at point-blank range. Needless to say they have not ever underestimated the 0.22 round since then, especially if one is a decent shooter.

Very cool, I will try this myself since I am a big and strong man with a KA-BAR knife and a .22 rifle. I think I even have a 2x4 in the garage.
      Fun times tomorrow!
Edit: I bet my knife can get 1/2" into the 2x4. We'll see if my actions live up to my imagination.

It will kill the crap out of you, that's awesome! Great round, been using it for coyote, Bobcats, raccoon for years. It drops them in their tracks. I knew a guy in high school that was accidentally shot on the second floor of a house shot from the first floor and it killed him. 22LR is definitely lethal!

I'm new to guns, although I've always believed in .22 LR… Some more experience people are trying to convince me that .22 is just a toy and buy a .45 or at the very least a 9mm… and although I'm a big gun, but I really enjoy shooting a Ruger 10-22…

    • @saltyark7564
      @saltyark7564 2 года назад

Higher calibers have better stopping power…. However it’s always about shot placement….
My accuracy with short barrel pistols are horrible and I’d be better off using my m&P 15-22 than I would a short barrel 9mm Ruger, that being said… I’d prefer to have a 9mm with a regular size barrel, but with my 15-22 I’m very comfortable shooting 2 shots in the chest and one in the head repeatedly and accurately.
No hun is a toy and every gun can be lethal, it’s all about shot placement.

I have a high degree of respect for a .22LR. I was shot by one when I was 14. Was most fortunate that the injury was no worse than it was. I was hit in foot. I did not "feel" the exact moment of impact. The impact literally picked me up and sat me square on the ground. I was totally confused because I did sit down, but yet I was square on the ground! It was that much latency between the moment of impact and feeling pain, but when the pain hit, it made up for lost time!!!!

Reagan was almost killed by a .22 that bounced off his limo and entered under his arm, stopping less than an inch from his heart. If you want to know what it will do, take notice of the guys with Reagan who got shot in various places by John Hinckley. Not one of them bounced up and kicked ass. They all laid there like they were dead or dying.

Just stumbled upon this, but it's a really great video. In the infantry, they teach that the effective range for a 5.56 round (i.e., what the M4 and some AR-15s fire) is 300 meters. A lot of people think the 22LR is inadequate for personal defense, but this video definitively proves that wrong, and proves that a AR platform is way too much rifle for home or personal defense. IMO, an AR is a lifestyle accessory. I'm more than content that my home is secure with my modified Kel Tec CP-33, and the Ruger 22 LCP pistol that I carry. I have a 9mm Sig, but I rarely use it; it's my backup for my 22!

grtwhtbnr_ I didn't recognize you w/o your "spotter" in the .22LR vid.
Once again, I agree. I was surprised to see the distances though. Heartening.
I am a big city RN and have seen more than my share of bullet wounds. Just for giggles though, I once had a patient who played russian roulette w a 22 short and lost. He shot himself in the roof of the mouth and made it! The slug lodged behind his nose. No brain injury, not much blood loss. I keep the 12/22 on the theory that if looter(s) with ARs show up, plinking one and cutting the other in half will probably discourage them while I reload. Packs of roving coyotes? Handled. If the 101 airborne shows up I'm screwed, blued, and tattooed without a SAW, 10,000 rnds, 20 40mm grenades, 3 RPGs and a stinger missile. Keep up the good work .Mikey likes it.

Thanks for this video. I've always maintained that the best weapon for self defense is the one that you are able and willing to use effectively, but even more important is having it with you. My little Phoenix .22 might not be the scariest pistol on the market, but it is always ready to use. If someone is becoming a problem, they're not going to be further away than 20-30 feet anyway, and if they are out at several hundred yards, I use the Mosin Nagant sniper rifle.

What most people don't realize is most criminals will not fight with you if they know you are armed, whether you have a 458 elephant gun or a 22 once you start shooting, they are going to flee 99 times out of a 100 ! Nobody wants to be shot ! ! So yes a 22 will work for self defense !

    • @redtra236

The main issue is the stopping power isn't very good if you don't hit them right in a vital area it may not go well for you. Only dumbasses argue that it can't kill it's just it's not nearly as powerful as some other mainstream rounds like the 9x19mm or especially the 10mm auto.

Years ago I set up a one gallon milk jug of water at 320 yards, with two 2-ft panels of half inch plywood behind it. After some practice on a metal 5-gallon can, in the single luckiest shot of my life, I nailed the jug dead center. The rounds were Remington LR High Velocity 40-grain solid points. This shot put a pair of 2" long splits in the back of the jug, and the exit hole showed that the solid bullet had mushroomed to 3/8". It then penetrated both pieces of plywood and dug 4" into the dirt. The .22 LR does not get enough respect.
