    Thanks so much ! I was putting in a weighted pulling in just now and when tightened the nut it locked the motor and could not turn it. Have the spacers but didn’t know what I needed to do till I found this ! Cheers.

      I don't hardly run my 2110. I figure why wear it out putting around town. Besides if I run it I will use it and then I get the tickets.
      There is something satisfying about driving a slow turd as fast as you can over having something fast and constantly having to excersize restraint

    Thanks for sharing! The pulley sizes and which one smaller/larger making a difference is just like sprockets on a bicycle! Pedal crank sprockets the bigger the ring the harder (higher) the gear...the rear sprockets are exactly opposite! It’s all about gear ratio! Great video very informative! Thanks for sharing as always

    A "hot" topic for any VW. Those power pulleys can be a sometimes be a problem for a street car. Good belt alignment can really extend the life of the belt , so much counts on it

    Very informative video! I’m trying to “build” my first car...ever...and I’d say we’re probably about the same age. Something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m building a roadster...no roof, no heat, no windows...not even windshield wipers. It’ll be strictly to drive to the post office or for frozen yogurt...that sort of thing. Anyway...I’m not terribly concerned with high performance or anything like that. I did buy a bunch of chrome stuff for the engine...I know, I know. The crankshaft pulley I bought (aluminum with degrees) seems to sit too far up onto the shaft...so much that it rubs the tin behind/underneath. In addition, the pulleys are way out of alignment, with the alternator pulley extending more towards the rear of the car than the crankshaft pulley. I’ve read online that the alternator can perhaps be pushed “forward” a little and then strapped back down. That obviously wouldn’t correct the rubbing issue with the crankshaft pulley. I don’t have a sand seal, but would it still be OK to use that spacer/shim on the crankshaft? That would alleviate the rubbing...and then maybe I could get the alternator shifted enough to produce proper alignment?

      You want a dairy queen machine you can do what you want to make it look good. The fan belt won't fit right, the Crankshaft nut won't stay tight (especially if it's chrome) It will leak oil at both sides of the crank pulley. I would avoid pulling back your alternator as it distorts the tin and moves the fan in the fan housing. It might not rub but it causes stress and will eventually crack somewhere.
      I would strongly suggest you use the stock steel pulley's and paint them to match your body color. Same for valve covers by the way. Chrome valve covers always leak and the chrome plating reduces heat transfer which is a big part of there design.
      I don't follow all these suggestions on my cars and I experiment with a lot of different products but you will also notice I am constantly working on my cars and carry lot's of spare parts and tools with me at all times.
      A good friend of mine came up with a term called a buddy engine or a buddy buggy. It means you never drive your car unless you have a buddy in another car so hopefully one of you can pull the other guy home on a strap.,

      Thats a big job to get at it but worth the trouble. I'm a big believer in preventive maint over breakdown maint.

      90915-YZZD1 is the shorter one but they make a bigger one. Depends on you needs and location. Look in the filter book for filters that fit a Toyota 22re engine

    So if I put a power pulley in the bottom, I have to put a 356 porch pulley on the generator in order to cool the engine correct ly right ?

      What you describe makes no sense unless you have some odd clearance issues. I used a power pulley because of a dry sump 2 stage oil pump. A stock lower crank pulley would no longer fit.
      Power pulley on bottom gives you more pep but less cooling.
      356 pulley on top with stock lower crank gives more cooling and slightly less pep

    A question; my 71 bay's engine oil temp doesn't get over 160 in the winter here in GA. It has the flaps with no thermostat and a late beetle velocity stack on the fan shroud.
    What is the best option to get the engine and oil temp back up?

      Other than the obvious answer of install a stock thermostat I am curious of what your using to get that temp reading, where your getting it from, how long the engine has run, what weight oil are you using, what your oil pressure is? You might want to check the spring and piston of your oil relief valve at the rear of the engine. The relief valve controls some of the oil flow going threw the oil cooler.

      I would call any of the supply places that sell VW alternators. I probably have one or two but don't have any idea where to start looking..... I know it's in a coffee can somewhere. LOL

    Hello i just got a empi stock size pully and it is going to far into the case do i need the spacers you showed or are those just for sand seal pulleys

      Most pully's I bought came with a apacer for the crank and a small one for the Al;t/ gen. You need to have the fan belt in alignment

      Not sure why you wouldn't want stock as it moves more air as the RPM goes up. Some drag racers would run dual fans above the cylinder tin and leave everything else off.

    EZGZ, can you help me figure out a problem I'm having? I have a stock 40hp engine in my '64 bug. Oil is coming out from behind the crank pulley. Oil is sprayed all over the engine compartment, including under the decklid. I made sure the oil filler tube is clear. I adjusted the valves. It has a stock pulley. What gives? Thanks!

      If this is a sudden new problem something has changed and you need to investigate until you find it. If it were me I would make sure the vent tube was open. I would remove the rear crankshaft fanbelt pulley and inspect and clean those left hand threads that are supposed to keep the oil inside the case. Of course You didn't overfill your crankcase with oil ??????? It's a bitch to get that pulley off while in the car. They make a special puller just for that. If everything looks in order I would start suspecting worn piston rings and or valve guides allowing blowby to enter the crankcase. You spark plugs would be fouling and first sinner would be #3 cylinder

      @@TheEZGZ Thank you EZGZ. The engine has less than 500 miles on it and the builder passed away (RIP Johnny). It has a Fram bypass oil filter. What if I accidentally overfilled it at one point? Would that ruin the engine? I had it filled to the line when cold. But now I have it a little below the line because I'm afraid of overfilling it. Would breather box and hoses to the valve covers help? I will take the pulley off and clean the threads. The vent tube is open. Thank you again for your help.

      Joseph I think your over reacting to during your honeymoon. LOL Leave the damned thing alone and drive it somewhere far away. Like a full tank of gas on a weekend out in the country. Get it good and hot and enjoy it. let those rings seat. Hopefully the builder kept the air flaps installed in the fan shroud and used the thermostat that many builders delete. If you don't have it don't loose sleep over it it's mostly for short drive warm ups. Use any good grade 10w-30 oil and add a little Zinc. Relax and enjoy and carry a peace of cardboard to throw under it to catch that drip of oil. Every ounce in a while wipe that pulley troff out with a old rag. YOU DON't HAVE A PROBLEM. Not every rebuild is perfect. All my engines leak oil somewhere eventually. Sleep Well my friend.

      sounds like your rings are worn and you have crankcase pressure. Make sure your crankcase vent is clear and if possible connect to your air cleaner like the factory did. If you have a high horsepower engine you may need to vent your valve covers..
      Hopefully if someone was inside your engine during a rebuild the put the oil slinger in properly.
      You might even consider a sand sealed pulley setup. It's more to keep sand out but does help keep the oil in or at lease reduce the oil leak. carcraftstore.com/sandsealpulleykit.aspx

    Hello from Canada, only minus -50F last week.
    So when you mention to leave room for expansion, I automatically thinking of contraction lol ...
    Wow, what a great, well explained, pulley presentation !
    I have a couple of questions.
    I just bought a new aluminium Autolina engine case,
    and they say it's machined for a sand seal.
    How do I confirm that ?
    Second question: if the case is machined for a sand seal, is there a way to run an type1 original pulley with the grooves ?

      The most popular aluminum sand sealed pulley's come with a none machine seal insert. You just silicone it in place and add your pulley.
      Remove or don't use the seal and go with stock. They also make stock style aluminum pulleys for that extra bling...
