  • Diesel heater in the winter. Diesel heater in a rooftop tent is a really nice set up in the winter, or even fall/ spring for that matter. With some inspiration from some other folks around me I believe I’ve come up with one of the best methods for running the diesel heater to a rooftop tent or even a ground tent near your vehicle.
    I’m using a Vevor diesel heater:
    bit.ly/352UWWE
    Other Vevor diesel heaters: bit.ly/328jZ9W
    They have a Code:
    GO5 to save 5$ off
    GO10 to save 10$ off over 200$
    Step: amzn.to/3HTN8Fs
    Hose: amzn.to/3oQd0dW
    Hand Clamps: amzn.to/3GVv2l0
    Hole Saw Bit: amzn.to/3I04Ebi
    Clamp on Chord 12v: amzn.to/34YKuPY
    Solder old 12v Chord: amzn.to/33moSN5
    What I’m using for straps, you may have to strap the hose depending on your tent: envisionedprod...
    Shoutout to The Gear Bunker for inspiring this design! • Chinese Diesel Heater ...

      I’d like to use this on a UTV while in motion for winter time, and remove in the summer. Is there a safety feature where I wouldn’t be able to run the heater while driving around? Mainly flat ground but occasionally hitting hills. I’ll obviously have it sitting in a sturdy mount.

    FINELY someone smart enough to mount their heater on a tire step! Every time I see one of these video's for roof top campers the person is always speculating "where should I put the heater"and I'm like on a tire step!! One thing I did notice is your muffler has a weep hole and that should be pointed down to allow for condensation drainage!

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 года назад +3

      Oh I didn’t even notice that. I’ll have to take a closer look at that when I set it up. Using it this weekend so I will make sure I put the muffler the right way.

  • @larrywerring9674
    @larrywerring9674 Год назад +17

    An observation. You may have the muffler attached 90 degrees off the angle recommended by Vevor, probably because it looks better. Like a car, the muffler can collect condensed water from the exhaust and eventually rust out. It is built with a weep hole along one edge to allow condensate to drain out and not collect inside the muffler. The configuration I saw in the video has the muffler sideways/horizontally (i.e. as if laying on a flat surface) rather than vertically with the weep hole at the bottom. The other hole (opposite the weep hole) is to allow you to attach the muffler to a bracket to keep it from moving around.

    • @miscponderations1014
      @miscponderations1014 Год назад +1

      Absolutely correct!
      But I found that it doesn't really need a muffler. Quiet enough without it.

  • @Polydeukes68

    Nice video. These are important as the instructions that come with the units are pretty much useless. One suggestion: in 7.45 you have your muffler sideways. The weep hole must be pointed down so condesation can drip out.
    Also, a genuine Webasto muffler is much quieter but adds to the cost. Quieter fuel pumps can also be sourced and/or the fuel pump can be muffled with some imagination and work. These issues might be important if you install the heater in a camper or something where you can hear it actually working during night and if you are a light sleeper.

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  Год назад

      I wish I had the funds for a true Webasto, maybe one day but I guess even the muffler wouldn’t be too much. As much as I winter camp it might be worth it to get an expensive heater.

      @@OXFOOT Luckily there are many videos where people explain how to use the control panel too. It has some functions which are quite difficult to figure out by oneself if one doesn't even know they are possible. Like tuning the air/fuel -ratio to make the heater work better and produce less soot. Also several good how to service the burner videos are on the tube. Very simple really, user doable easily. Guys in UK seem to use these a lot and they have made loads of interesting videos (tuning, servicing, improvements etc.).

I set mine on a trailer hitch cargo basket and cover it with a large tote that I store the unit and 10ft hose in. I cut a 3in hole in the side of the tote for the hot air and by flipping the tote over and covering the heater, it can draw fresh air in from the open bottom as well as getting rid of the exhaust. Couple questions as well. What about heat loss, especially in winter, thru the uninsulated heater pipe? Maybe it would be worth putting on some insulated pipe wrap? Next, u show the thing buried in snow, should it be more protected, anything to say about low freeze point diesel fuel?

      Do they show it inside of a car? Lmao don’t do that. Like I’ve seen people do that in vans but they always have the exhaust out of the bottom with a hole cut in the floor with a thru hull. But you should also have it with a shorter hose and in theory you should have the air coming in circulate from the inside of the tent with another hose.

    This looks like a portable version of a bunk heater we use in semi trucks. So I’ve got some questions!
    What kind of temps have you used this at?
    Did you use #1 or #2 or a mix?
    Do you think the muffler gets to hot to mount it and the flex pipe up under that tire step utilizing heat wrap on exhaust and high heat paint on the step? pondering how I could condense it down more.
    How hard was it on fuel? Can a guy let her idle all day if the vehicle is staying put and your setup? Some days if we don’t leave ours running up here your gonna have a bad time when ya need it that night!
    Thanks for the content. This was very interesting. I apologize in advance if some of these questions are answered in the other video. Still haven’t gotten to that one!

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 года назад +2

      It’s pretty much adapted from the trucking industry. Heard that’s where it started and people moved it to vans and then eventually to the offroad/camping world.
      I have used 1 more often but 2 seems to be the most straight forward and easy to modify. One is an 8kw I believe and the new one is 5kw.
      I considered that idea keeping it mounted to the step but then it wouldn’t sit well when traveling so I’d be interested in a concept where it easily mounts at camp, however I’d have to test and see how hot it gets compared to the paint. Maybe there’s a way to mount it that doesn’t transfer the heat?

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 года назад +1

      So for fuel it’s probably the most efficient heating system I’ve used. It used about a gallon in a night running not full blast but pretty high. The capacity is 2 gallons I believe. If you ran it on low it would be ideal but I was running it so high that it was too warm for a sleeping bag ha. Just wanted to test it and even though it was really too warm in there, the dry heat felt nice after being so cold in the snow previously.

    First point, naked flame heaters directly ecit CO into the space they are in! Buddy heaters are NOT your buddy!
    Point 2, cigar lighter ports are rated at10A max, 2A continuous, these heaters take about 20A on atart up and 2.5A continuous if within temp range, if they shut down, again, 20A shutdown, 20A restart.
    Point 3, the outlet of the heater can reach over 200°C, it needs to be a composite pipe for at least the first 2 feet/60cm or if inlet is too cold it will melt the pipe (tried and tested that one!)
    point 4, remember the Chinese diesel heaters are a copy of an Ebespacher heater, which is undoubtably a much better unit.
    Point 5, remember the facts of things like volt drop and resistance of cable size and amperage. the cable supplied is way too small and generally not suitable.
    Idea is sound, but re-route the air intake for the hot air to the inside as there should be a intake air temp sensor so taking cold air makes it less efficient and wastes fuel. Neg temps makes it run hard all the time and with the controller outside it is not possible for it to self regulate and changing it's settings impossible without going outside. Better to buy a better heater with a temp sensor on the controller and recirculate the heated air, much more efficient and will save you money in the long run.

      It depends on what setting you run it on. If you want it to be really warm then it might run all night but if you just want it to not be too cold then a lower setting might kick on and off to regulate the temperature.

    Does this setup only need power for firing it up or does it continually draw power liking this set up just worried about it draining the battery if running all night.

      Yes it consistently drains power. It needs to run on a powerbank of some sort.

    Are these heaters ok to be left in the elements? Ie rain/ snow etc while outside?

    How large of a power station would you need to run this heater, would a bluetti ac50s which is a watt power station be enough power, or would a larger station be needed. And what is the rough power draw

    • @OXFOOT
      @OXFOOT  2 года назад

      The bluetti Ac50 is 300watts, 500wh? If you’re trying to run it all night it’ll run fine, but it really depends on what setting you run it on as ti how long it’ll run. At start up they can draw up to 10amps but then drop to an average of like 1-2 amps. Aka a 12v running at an average of 1.5 amps of current would draw about 18 watts meaning that it in theory run up to like 27 hours give or take depending on start up.

    Excellent video. Any thoughts for an insulated air hose?

      Have any suggestions? I’m open to the idea. I like using it as radiant heat inside the tent but yeah a decent amount heat lost going up the tent.

    Hey man, where did you get that end cap thing for your dryer hose?

    • @OXFOOT

      I’m about 90% sure that it came with my Vevor heater. Looked through my amazon purchases and I didn’t see a purchase for that outside of what came with the heater.

    The hose doesnt get too hot? Wondering if it needs to get wrapped so it doesnt melt the RTT

      In my experience no, I could even touch it and not burn myself, but many folks have recommended getting insulated hose. Less heat loss and probably less likely to burn something.

    Do you have a recommendation for the 3-in hose? I bought one but then it smells kind of bad when I'm running it even on the lowest setting.
