- LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
Prosecution Witnesses:
Direct Exam of Lt. Todd Schenk - Crime Scene Investigator
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina. You can watch in the player above.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so sure of guilt so early on in a trial…
I have.......Mollie Tibbets trial.
The thumbnail did it for me.
@@zealanddublin9047 great point!
Ronnie O’Neil that defended himself was a definite guilty. That was one of the craziest trials I’ve ever seen.
The Timothy Jones Jr trial. Horrendous!!
125 knife wounds. A savage. A coward. An evil, rampaging mind.
These police, detectives gathered the EVIDENCE AND WRAPPED IT UP TIGHTLY WITH A BOW! Justice for SAMI🌟🙏
When the police find a beanie embroidered with "COLD BLOODED" in the bloody trunk of your client's car, it's a bad day for you as a defense attorney! 😂
how upsetting for her family to see her blood stains on that jacket the pain that must cause them. My heart goes out to them
@Charlotte: I think of her boyfriend. He must suffer massive guilt, that he didn't call the police in her town immediately, when she didn't arrive at her home. He and her friends "assumed facts not in evidence," so to speak, that she got home okay, it was just her cell phone left behind. He must be beating himself up that he didn't call the police to do a welfare check, to make sure she got home. They get there, she's OK, no harm, no foul. But he didn't.
@@nonmihiseddeo4181honestly I really don’t think there’s anything he could have done besides going out with her that night 😔 even if he realized something was wrong that night he would have to drive to the bar,ask for the surveillance, then get the police on board with finding the car. It’s horrible 😔
This case has gripped me. Such a waste of a precious life. They did such thorough work
They did such thorough work because the evidence was overwhelming right in front of their eyes. Thankfully, the evil monster is dumb Asf!
The only thing wrong with this case is he didn't get the Death Penalty.
@TS not even close. Death Penalty is biblical, lawful and more humane than locking someone up who will never be free again.
Samantha's family is happy with a life sentence. That way he can sit the rest of his life locked up behind bars and dwell on that he'll never be a free man.
A lot of prisoners would love the death penalty to escape their years behind bars.
Would of been good if this comment was on correct video. For those that don’t know the outcome of the trial.
@TS that’s your opinion
@@BelindaS amen to that!
Notice how the monster can't look at his evil work and his family claiming he is innocent 👹👹😈👿
Is Rowland's defense going to insinuate that someone else borrowed his car and committed the murder? Yet Rowland was the one cleaning it up? Yeah, right.
Yes they tried to insinuate his girlfriend used his car and picked up this girl because she thought he was cheating on her.
@@Dspalten Oh goodness gracious that's absurd. I really hope this jury isn't a bunch of morons and can see through the outlandish lies. Every time I feel confident I remember Casey Anthony's jury. Complete idiots.
His family have claimed he was at a party, passed out & when he woke up, his keys were gone. But miraculously when he went outside, his car was there w/the keys inside. And the blood, phone etc. They said he made a mistake by not calling police & running when pulled over. If you believe that, I have some oceanfront property to sell you here in Missouri.
@@maryb6672 Oh Please they must be as dumb as him. This guy is as Guilty as they come. Kudos to his ex girlfriend for testifying against him.
@@maryb6672 Most car thefts are in two categories: luxury cars stolen to order (organised crime) or cars taken and then abandoned. Taking a car without consent and then returning it is unusual to say the least; returning it with evidence of a murder being committed inside it is stretching credibility a bit too far.
Wow Maria Howard really lucked out getting away from him. He was basically implicating her through the whole thing: blood on the daughters shoes, work hat with blood in car, letter with DNA, wet work shirt (he probably got blood on it), used her cleaning products, and then dumped everything at her home. Rest In Peace Samantha Im happy her and the family got justice.

I bet he wore that hat with pride and also this isn't his first murder, either.

Todd Schenk is very impressive. Very articulate and knowledgable.
Prosecution should be using her name to establish to the jury that she was a person. A young lady.....that was brutally killed...not 'the victim'.
I think because the word victim draws more sympathy from the jury maybe🤷♀️
Why not express it as "the victim, young Samantha "...
@@veronicanonica that kind of wording isn't allowed generally
@@veronicanonica the word young would not be allowed in there.
You don't want to call her by name until you get to the point in the investigation that the victim has been identified. The jury needs to go step by step through the investigation. If the prosecution is calling her "Samantha" from the very beginning it can be seen as creating an emotional bias in the jury. In a case like this where there is no exculpatory evidence or viable alibi, you don't want to give the defense ANYTHING that they can use as an appeal. The jury needs to be where the witness on the stand was. As the case develops, her name will be used more and more.
Omg look at all the envelops of evidece on table in front of witness stand.
It takes a very special person to do this type of investigating on a murder case… The look on his face when he knows he’s freaked… so funny 😂

Well sometimes hands on is easier to see and Comprehend. The prosecutors and investigators did a superb job.
Maybe if they had fewer prosecutors and public defenders working on a single case they could afford better technology. I’ve never seen so many attorneys on both sides of a criminal case.
I’ve been watching this trial from the beginning and this defendant with his mask is driving me nuts. He just will not cover his nose. A question of power, that is how he ticks. He was told to cover his nose, he does it in every single part of this coverage. Just to lift his nose back up towards the sky. They even exchanged his initial mak. Perpetrators are ticking exactly like this, stupid mind games that demonstrate that a spoiled brat doesn’t obey to any rules. In the end of this sequence he mysteriously picks up his mask twice. Seems he is losing control.
I'm glad I'm not the only person bothered by his not covering his nose with his mask. He has power and control issues.

If Rowland is NOT guilty he shouldn't be bothered by the pictures. Reiterating that HE DIDNT DO IT. He can't look up. Very telling.
I think it is the complete opposite. He can’t handle looking at what he potentially did.
Had he looked at the pictures, you would have declared him guilty, as well. Behaviour during those moments are the weakest evidence.

The judge spoke about it during the sentencing. He said no killer can ever go back there.
I can't imagine being one of the hunters that found her. Hunters tend to be pretty manly men and I can't imagine coming across this young woman, savagely beaten and abandoned, alone in a cold field, left for the scavengers. Why is he allowed to talk to his family over to side and laugh and joke around? I’ve never seen this before!!!
It doesn't happen in most court rooms. The state makes laws and rules for their own state. There should be stricter standards of some things from state to state.

"Striated" or "striation" just means "striped" or "in a striped pattern," as in the striated blood (pattern) on the victim's arm. It flowed down her arm in stripes (following the path of least resistance). EDIT: The blood itself isn't physically striped, just to be clear.

Why does the videographer keep the camera on the defendant instead of showing us the witness and the evidence. It’s maddening!
Exactly! It's annoying. Like we want to see the defendant's face so much.
Some of the evidence they can't show. Like crime scene photos or photos of the victim's body. In order to make sure they don't accidentally show this, they'll keep the camera on the defendant.
Yessssssss!👍
It also lets us see his demeanour and reactions to what’s being said/shown. As we watch in the media, we’re acting as though a jury so we take into consideration how he behaves towards all of the evidence and testimony

Good luck with that. Most kids can figure out such contraptions easier than many adults. My parents used to get me as a child to open their child proof pill bottles for them. But they also taught me not to eat random pills.
That probably won’t happen. However I have a small jagged edge/flashlight that’s heavy duty and is primarily used to break windows. It’s about 5” long. I keep it in my purse, and hopefully I never have to use it to break out a window.
