  • LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

If he's innocent, that would mean that:
    1. Someone took his car and drove it in the same way as he did, including keeping the seat way back and driving the wrong way down one way streets.
    2. The person then mimicked his handwriting and made a list of things you need for a murder, like duct tape and bleach.
    3. The person then abducted Samantha and killed her in the car, where she left behind about a gallon of her blood and her footprint in the window. The person used a knife very similar to the weird knife that Rowland has -- a knife with two ends, one with a double blade and one a single blade -- to do the murder.
    4. That person then wore an outfit remarkably similar to Rowland's outfit that he was wearing that day, and also happened to be similar enough looking to Rowland that the cell phone store guy would identify him as Rowland, and also wore that outfit -- down to the money bandana and distinctive shoes. He wore that outfit while trying to access Sami's ATM card and sell her cell phone.
    5. That person borrowed Rowland's cell phone and also knew its passcode, a passcode that was tricky enough that the police weren't able to guess it.
    6. That person dumped Sami's body in an area that Rowland was super familiar with, but was in the middle of nowhere.
    7. That person then brought back the car and the phone, and the clothes, and the knife, and also rubbed some of Sami's DNA under his fingernails.
    8. Though Rowland found his car now to be inexplicably full of blood, he didn't seem to react to it and just began trying to clean it with bleach.
    9. When the girlfriend pounds on his door "like the police do," he's spooked, and when pulled over by cops, he's calm until the cops mention him matching a description, and that spooks him into running away -- but that is just coincidental and has nothing to do with him being guilty, somehow.
    10. The person who murdered Sami then also dumped all that stuff behind Rowland's girlfriend's house.
    I mean. Come on.

MAKE SURE IT ALL MATCHES B4 U EVEN THINK TO GET IN THE VEHICLE!! And im not saying this was her fault, bcuz it wasnt her fault she was killed. JUST BE MORE AWARE OUT THERE BCUZ THERE R PPL OUT THERE THAT CANNOT BE TRUSTED👆🏻. Ever since I had heard about this in 2019, I couldn't believe she was left out there all alone to wait for a ride😡. The "guilty" trick at the end 1:16:10 is a little corny though.

The defense really didn’t try at all. There are quite a few things that could have and should have been said in his defense.

Not so sure about the shark metaphor...dehumanizing anyone, even a murder, is a slippery slope; just call him what he is...an evil person and a killer!

@Tricia R. Yes, but a carnivorous animal hunts its prey because it must to eat...it is not evil. Therefore it is not correct to equate this man and his choice to commit murder to an animal whose instinct is to hunt and kill to survive.
