  • LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
    Prosecution Witnesses:
Direct Exam Dr. Thomas Beaver - Forensic Pathologist
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

She was a bright, shining light that was extinguished way too early. One suggestion I would make, though, to young people who go out partying. I'd bet all of those right side injuries happened when she realized he was not taking her home, she began kicking the window since the doors wouldn't open and then leaned over the seat from the back and was trying to grab him and the steering wheel to get him to stop/lose control. He is quickly stabbing and jabbing her with his right hand, while driving, to her face, head, arms, and hands. That would also explain why she was not dialing 911, her boyfriend, or anyone. When he stabbed her head and face, she dropped her phone in the front. He then probably stopped for a minute at that point to get her under control, grabs her phone and turns it off. She's then kicking him a few last times and he begins stabbing her feet and body. She then begins to lose consciousness from blood loss, begins bleeding to death, so he then takes her out to dump her in the country where she probably dies on the way. That would also explain while there was no signs of a fight or continued stabbing on the ground outside of the car. He then opens the door, drags her to the spot they found her. That's when he takes the time to go through her stuff, gets her debit card, etc.
You know through the entire trial he is doing a play by play out in his mind of "this is when I stabbed her in the head", "This is when I did this and this.", etc.

Heck, a patrol car drove up behind him and more likely spooked him, after the fact, because he turned on a one way street. and you think that he stabbed her 120 times all nice and neat. Not likely.
