  • LIVE TRIAL: SC v. Nathaniel Rowland Trial - Alleged Murder Of Samantha Josephson
Prosecution Opening Statements by Byron Gipson
Defense Opening Statements by Alicia Goode
Nathaniel David Rowland, 27, stands trial for allegedly murdering Samantha Josephson, 21. Court is held in Richland County, South Carolina. You can watch in the player above.
Josephson, a student at the University of South Carolina, got into a vehicle that she believed was her Uber in the early morning of March 29, 2019, according to police. She was found dead in Clarendon County the next day, stabbed more than 30 times.
Rowland was pulled over in his Chevy Impala, and he ran, officials have said. Josephson’s phone and blood were in the car, investigators said. There were also cleaning supplies, with the child locks engaged, according to authorities.
“I can not fathom how someone could randomly select a person, a beautiful girl and steal her life away,” Samantha’s mother Marci Josephson said in a statement to the court in 2019, according to Live 5 News. “His actions were senseless, vile and unacceptable. It sickens us to think that his face was the last thing that my baby girl saw on this earth.”
Samantha’s parents started the #WhatsMyName campaign and is working to pass “Sami’s Law” in South Carolina, which would require ride-share drivers to be clearly identified before passengers enter the vehicle.
Rowland’s family has insisted on his innocence. He was passed out at a house party the night Josephson was abducted, his cousin Trey Elmore told South Carolina newspaper The State in an April 2019 report.
Rowland’s father Henry Rowland shared the second-hand story with WACH around the same time. In this account, Nathaniel Rowland woke up to find his keys were gone, but discovered his vehicle outside. The keys-and blood-were inside. His father said that if this story were true, then it was a mistake not to call 911. It was also a mistake to run during the traffic stop.

Same! A great closing statement is my favorite, too. I definitely the verdict is mostly based off how good the lawyers are and the rest based on actual physical evidence. Christian Martin is in prison after a trial with zero evidence but his attorney was so weak, limp, unassertive, not even covering the basics. Plus, we all know his ex did it. If you haven’t watched it yet, you might check it out but you might end of angry like I am. Anyway, this defendant is toast facing this prosecutor!

It’s beyond obvious that he killed this young lady, but I can understand how they can’t believe that their son would kill someone. I actually think it’s their inability to accept when their son has done wrong that probably caused him to turn out so badly in the first place. He grew up being taught that he could do as much wrong as he wanted and face no consequences.
I think it takes the same kind of denial to believe he hasn’t killed others too. One doesn’t randomly go out and hunt down a person to kill in front of so many potential witnesses for his first time killing someone. He was brazen with this one to the point that he sought her out and picked her up from a sidewalk with lots of other people standing outside those bars. This would’ve been a new level of risk that one only takes after having killed others beforehand. They generally pick more and more risky situations as they kill more people.

The prosecutor's Ockham's Razor comment was great.
Ockham's razor, or the principle of parsimony or law of parsimony, is the problem-solving principle that "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity", sometimes inaccurately paraphrased as "the simplest explanation is usually the best one." The idea is attributed to English Franciscan friar, William of Ockham c.1287-1347.

Jesus that was FAR from the worst I’ve ever heard. It seems like the only thing the defense has is that his DNA wasn’t on her so that’s what she pushed. But, she sure didn’t mention that her DNA was all over his car and visibly seen in his trunk. I’ve only watched five days so far but I know this much….my trunk doesn’t have one speck of a dead person’s blood in it much less blood all over the place. Also, I don’t have a dead woman’s phone that had location sharing turned off after I picked her up on video footage. Also, I don’t have any dead person’s keys in my car door cubby. Anyway, defense has several lawyers that definitely don’t seem state appointed. I think they’ll do well but I have a feeling there’s gonna be a lot of evidence against him. I’ve actually seen other trials where the victim didn’t have the killers dna on her but there was other overwhelming evidence. ❤️🤟🏻

For the sake of argument, assume that the defense attorney for Rowland is correct. She claims none of the DNA on Josephson's body, on Rowland's Impala car's steering wheel and door handle match Rowland's DNA. However, she did not say that none of Rowland's DNA was found anywhere in or on his car. It is his car, after all; it stands to reason that his DNA is somewhere in/on that car.
Also, can someone confirm whether DNA can in fact be eliminated from a hard/non-porous surface if thoroughly bleached and disinfected (which Rowland's then-girlfriend testifed that she saw him in the act of, in cleaning the interior of his car).
Moreover, if Rowland wasn't the person who physically assaulted Josephson, he could have been an accomplice to her kidnapping and murder regardless. In other words, felony murder -- where he may've been an accessory to her kidnapping and/or murder by being present with the person(s) who actually did commit the kidnapping and/or murder. If this was, in fact, the case... they why wouldn't he have contended that fact at any time between his arrest and his conviction by jury? Why wouldn't he have named and identified Josephson's actual murderer(s)? Why wouldn't he have given evidence about his claims to his attorneys? And why wouldn't his attorneys have made that case? Why didn't his attorneys cross-examine the prosecution's witnesses, experts, et al? Why didn't his attorneys present actual, material evidence that would have clearly contradicted the prosecution's case against Rowland? Whey didn't his attorneys arouse any specific, compelling suspicion of doubt as to Rowland's guilt (beyond his attorney's closing argument, which was extremely long-winded only to make two statements: that no bruises or lacerations were found on Rowland's body, and that none of his DNA was found on Josephson's body and/or on the car's steering wheel, etc.)? His closing-argument attorney was groping for straws; this is her job, she has to find something, however flimsy, to work with. We'll presume that she and the rest of the defense attorneys did their job thoroughly (enough). That they could assert nothing else, and cross-examined almost none of the witnesses, experts, et al, for the prosecution, speaks volumes that the jury found Rowland guilty on all counts, and beyond a reasonable doubt.
If you were up for kidnapping and murder, and were facing a possible sentence of life in prison without parole, and you weren't the murderer but were 'only' an accessory to the murder, wouldn't you name and identify the actual murderer(s), and give evidence (material and/or circumstantial, and get your own witnesses and experts to testify) to that effect? If you feared retaliatory murder (and/or upon your family members) by the supposed murderer(s), just for speaking up, you'd be facing a life-sentence in prison, anyway. Why would you take "the fall" for the supposed actual murderer(s)?
Rowland was found guilty on all counts. Based on voluminous material, factual evidence and corroborated, reliable testimony, there is no reasonable doubt. Let him never see the light of a free day ever again. For he made sure that Samantha Josephson never again would.

If he were offered a plea deal and accepted it, that would be the only way to ensure he doesn't get an appeal. No matter what the facts of a case, defendants can win an appeal and get a new trial for LOTS of different reasons, including inefficient counsel, new evidence, a retroactive change in the law, etc. The state likely didn't offer him a plea or offered him one that would put him in prison for life. So, he probably has nothing to lose by going to trial, even if he was offered a plea.
