Indeed! Even though 3D in a 2D based system is just a bunch of algorithms, And the super FX chip improve the performance by helping the cartridge calculate the algorithms at a fast speed, it's still a marvelous improvement to all that was!
I just love how after Falco calls dibs on the Attack Carrier you then see some of the robots carrying away pieces of it, and you start to get a bad feeling as if it’s no longer needed and the game is making you fight something harder, and once you reach the boss, oh boy
HOLY SHIT professor Hangar Boss at 7:20 is amazing! I love how he is inside the building saying you "bye" and then you chase him outside, under that huge bridge-like structure. And the music fits PERFECTLY!
I like the Boss Rematches with Phantron and the Great Commander. Truly a great feel to destroy them AGAIN. But when Phantron Transforms, it makes the boss even more awesome. And Great Commander's mech form is awe inspiring.
Fun fact: in the level 3 version of Corneria, Falco destroys the attack carriers from levels 1 and 2. You see robots carrying away pieces of it just before the level 3 boss appears.
I like how when you go up against the Great Commander for the first time, it makes this over-the-top entrance and when it all assembles and becomes this foreboding warship against your puny Arwing.... it has the same size health bar as your Arwing lol.
Probably has to do with it giving your brain room to imagine what it might look like in real life vs today where the only imagination lies in the designers eyes.
I can imagine a remade version of the Great Commander having dialogue like this: 1ST FIGHT Commander: "That is as far as you go, Star Fox." Peppy: "Incoming enemies from the rear!" (The three sections show up and assemble.) Slippy: "Three ships joining into one? THIS is new!" Fox: "So this is the Great Commander..." Peppy: "It was an AI the whole time!?" _AI-Controlled Warship_ *The Great Commander* Slippy: "Enemy shield analyzed!" Commander: "Forward cannons ready! ENGAGE!" Mid-battle dialogue: Commander: "You don't stand a chance, McCloud!" Commander: All cannons, FIRE! Commander (damages Fox): "Ahahahahahahahaha!" Falco: "Why in the world would Andross let a robot be a commander?" Peppy: "Aim for the cannons when they open up!" Peppy (after flying past the boss): "Circle around and go for another attack!" Commander (taking damage): "Not bad, McCloud, but I'm just getting started!" Commander (defeated): "This isn't over yet, Star Fox!" 2ND FIGHT Commander: "Your journey ends here, Star Fox." Falco: "Back for more, circuit-brain?" Commander: "Don't be so smug. I have a new plan..." Commander: "Initiate transformation!" Slippy: "Enemy shield analyzed! ...Again!" _AI-Controlled Warship_ *The Great Commander MKII* Commander: "I'm done playing games with you!" Commander: "Mortars ready! FIRE!" Peppy: "Target the base, Fox!" Commander (launching iron ball swarm): "Let's see you handle THIS!" Commander (base destroyed): "Enough of this! Time to DIE!" Commander (defeated): "What!? Impossible! I know I'm months late on this but if the Great Commander actually was remade in Star Fox 64 it definitely could've replaced Sector Z's destroy the missile mission.
That same one. Atomic Base II, or I, either one. The way you are forced to enter both bases and the music both together are incredible atmosphere (Especially Atomic Base I, where you see the entire ship-base far away from you (Space Armada), until you realize it's actually coming straight at you). The hall-way dodging is also really fun, but going inside that core and having to shoot the pylons and expose the core just fascinates me for some reason. (Sound effects are amazing as well).
You can definitely tell just by looking at them which bosses in this game were essentially prototypes for Star Fox 64 bosses later on. Nice job on your LP.
Spinning Core needs to come back in the future Star Fox game. He’s my favorite boss in this game. They brought back the Monarch Dodora in Star Fox Zero
Thank you for acknowledging the Plasma Hydra as the hardest boss. I can make it through all of route 3 with little or no trouble, no lives lost, but that thing can still kill me dead all too often x_x
Phantron's my absolute favorite Star Fox boss. No other boss from Star Fox or Star Fox 64 could match my childhood meltdown after thinking I've beaten the game, only to have the little bastard transform on me... and then proceed to royally kick my ass. Nostalgia's a bitch...
Best game I ever played on the SNES, GREAT 3D graphics and imaginative bosses and Starwing planes. Totally enjoyable compared to the shit they crank out today.
Andross on Route 3: Ah...Your choice of routes took me by surprise!! Also Andross on Route 3: **Has trickier obstacles in the corridor that leads to him** _Also_ also Andross on Route 3: **Has a second form to his psychic shell**
I used to speed run SNES Star Fox 100% (Taking all 3 routes) and I usually screwed up on the level 5 bosses, ESPECIALLY when fighting Plasma Hydra. Heck, this boss fight should have appeared on Route 3 instead of Route 2 because it's so fucking hard. And don't forget Sector Z. When I reached Sector Z after defeating Monarch Dodora (Which is also hard) and completing Fortuna, I always say, "Oh shit. Brace yourselves." When I completed Sector Z for the first time (Which took forever), I felt like I earned a reward. Btw my favorite boss fight is Route 3 Andross because it is also hard (But not as hard as Plasma Hydra) and the music is awsome
+Pacman Troll Yea, I completely agree with you. Plasma Hydra is one tough boss, but I think the reason why it wasn't set in Tier 3 was because he breaks apart very quickly at around a quarter down of his health, once you get past his first phase of his arm cannons. After that, he's pretty much easily exposed, and can be killed quite quickly, that's if you don't let him destroy you with his spinning ability. But other than that, he is quite tough, and Zector Z level is quite harsh itself. I love all that debri/blocks that hurl against you though. Fits really well with the music.
+Flandre-SDM Yeah. The only thing that I like about Sector Z is the hallway that leads you to Atomic Base 2. Basically I like all the hallways in this game but the one in Sector Z is my favorite because it is so fun and challenging even though Sector Z is a fucking hard world
Flandre-SDM And I still think that Plasma Hydra is the hardest boss in the game even though it gets a little bit easier when you take down half of his health
I was never able to get past Venom Orbit (path 3). Hardest boss to me. Plasma Hydra did not feel as hard to me as you indicate. At least I learned what Andross boss fight 3 looks like, thanks.
Macbeth’s Spinning Core was the boss that, as a kid, I couldn’t beat, no matter how hard I tried. To beat that and then have to face the Great Commander…man that was whiplash.
14:39 Crusher pilot: Aw man... he`s./she`s gone now... what am I gonna do without him/her now? Aight, I`m just gonna back off... *Proceeds to activate self destruct, escape in a pod & chicken out*
Super late, but I remember as a kid, I always remembered that if you shot Professor Hangar a bunch before he takes off, then the damage you do "carries over to his health bar" when you catch up to him. I guess that's just my mind going all Mandela Effect, lol.
Dark LULtin Don't worry. Nintendo said that they will re release the SNES Classic, which will include the original Starfox and (Unreleased back in the 90's) Starfox 2!
Blade Barrier can be a goddamned nightmare if you take it on with only lasers. Even worse is when I once got stuck in a vicious cycle of dying to it, respawning and grabbing an extra life and dying to it again from having my fire reflected back at me.
when I was a kid I would habitually play SNES games without using L or R, so imagine how that went. I can't say I didn't get hit, but I spent a lot more time learning how to entirely dodge some things. Not really sure how I got through path 3 without any shoulder buttons.
I must study your tactics, I just got into the old SNES version of StarFox myself and I keep getting pummelled by a few bosses such as the Metal Crusher, and I nearly ate it at the Plasma Hydra X_X
Cool video. Do you remember reading a booklet and there is a picture of a boss that never was faced? In the picture it looked like a square space craft in the cockpit was a brittle looking thing and its health is long that it each one side of the picture to the other side. Do you remember seeing that in the booklet? It must of been removed from the game before being released and they didn't removed it from the booklet.
Brings back memories and also my eventual grounding for cussing out the machine, and my mother who was asking me where i learned all those nasty words, LOL...jokes on her, I learned them from her....
Unfortunately the annotations have been removed by RUclips a while back ago. I could try making a script and just add all the things I added, but they may not be the same since this video is pretty old.
Difficult bosses in this game: Plasma Hydra- each time you blast its arms, it will regenerate them. The only to damage Plasma Hydra is to shoot its arms when it will absorb them. When damaged enough, Plasma Hydra will grow an new arm and it will start whipping it blindly leaving it to be vulnerable to be destroyed. Monarch Dondora- It starts whipping its tail and twin necks trying to damage you. In order to damage this boss, shoot its necks or tail to you damage it until it will be destroyed while dodging its attacks. Phantron 2- Definitely the hardest of the three. After it transformed, this boss went berserk while blasting you with its missiles and laser blasts. It’s fast, strong, nimble, and it can spilt to three also it had the highest health of the three. Galactic Rider is the weakest of the three and its attacks are just bike rider robots and ramming you. Great Commander is the second strongest of the three and it transformed to a robot with only two simple weaknesses it’s lower body while firing missiles and black orbs which are easy to dodge and its head after losing its entire body. Great Commander 1- Way harder than its robot form. You have to damage its 6 chutes which are very difficult to hit, sadly bombs barely damage it. When damaged enough, Great Commander will start blasting you with fireballs which makes it harder to defeat this boss.
Nice job man! I've already done hard challenges on this game, but acing all the bosses... It can be so hard (Great Commander) or tricky (Spinning Core). I just disagree with Dodora's difficulty. His moves may be seen as dangerous or unpredictable, but with upgraded lazers and good accuracy, he dies too quickly to be a real threat.
Even after 20 years, I'm still impressed a 16-bit system could make something look like it's 3D.
Indeed! Even though 3D in a 2D based system is just a bunch of algorithms, And the super FX chip improve the performance by helping the cartridge calculate the algorithms at a fast speed, it's still a marvelous improvement to all that was!
That’s the power of the Super FX chip
Alvaro Perez yesr old comment but the snes could technically rival the playstation. Terranigma on the snes looks just like a ps1 game
Amen
@@alvaroperez2349 Just imagine what the Super FX chip (or even the Super FX 2 chip) would have been capable of if combined with Blast Processing?
I just love how after Falco calls dibs on the Attack Carrier you then see some of the robots carrying away pieces of it, and you start to get a bad feeling as if it’s no longer needed and the game is making you fight something harder, and once you reach the boss, oh boy
I like how you tilt the Arwing in the beat of the introduction music for the bosses.
Del I used to do the same thing
Duh duh duh duh, duh duh, duh duh
I`m gonna do that in SF64 now! Hehe this is gonna be fun!
HOLY SHIT professor Hangar Boss at 7:20 is amazing! I love how he is inside the building saying you "bye" and then you chase him outside, under that huge bridge-like structure. And the music fits PERFECTLY!
Yea, I agree. In my opinion one of the best boss designs in the game, and definitely amazing music too ~
Flandre-SDM I feel that theme is a bit overrated, but ok. I like the boss theme for the Monarch Dodora better.
+Imgema Definitely the best boss music in the game by far!
If not the best boss, then definitely one of the funnest. The music makes you feel like the threat.
I like the Boss Rematches with Phantron and the Great Commander. Truly a great feel to destroy them AGAIN. But when Phantron Transforms, it makes the boss even more awesome. And Great Commander's mech form is awe inspiring.
DO NOT SHOOT A BOMB AT Phantron Stage 1. It will hit you with a heat seeking one shot missile and end you automatically.
Fun fact: in the level 3 version of Corneria, Falco destroys the attack carriers from levels 1 and 2. You see robots carrying away pieces of it just before the level 3 boss appears.
Whaaaat...
I tought they were about to build it!
You blowed my mind sir.
+ Falco says:《The attack carrier will be mine》before the boss.
That's why i love life... you ALWAYS learn something new.
I would pay good money for an HD remake or even just a re-release of this.
I would too, don't worry.
There is one on nintendo 64, if that is not enough, one will come for the wii U before the next zelda game so don't worry
+Foxy Garrido those are sequels...
+Meko Katsu Actually, the N64 version of Star Fox is supposed to be a re-imagining of this Star Fox, or a reboot say, not a sequel.
+Flandre-SDM but it's not the original
This brought back a lot of fond memories and rage quits from years ago. Thank you.
I like how when you go up against the Great Commander for the first time, it makes this over-the-top entrance and when it all assembles and becomes this foreboding warship against your puny Arwing.... it has the same size health bar as your Arwing lol.
I remember nearly every 1st encounter with every boss as a kid. And how I felt about them. Awesome game.
Don't know why, but such Polygonal look of those bosses makes them look totally awesome than today's SCI-FI vehicles and weapons.
Probably has to do with it giving your brain room to imagine what it might look like in real life vs today where the only imagination lies in the designers eyes.
