    As somebody with an astigmatism that drives at night regularly I am all for having cameras and added tech instead of rear windows and side mirrors.

    I don't think dimming the headlights on the mirror is a good excuse for not having a rear view mirror.

    8:10 I'm sure the camera can dim highlights but cameras these days still have much worse dynamic range then human eyes even when using computational photography, let alone real time imagery from the commodity grade sensors that this will be using, so you won't be able to see anything other than the dimmed high beams. Meanwhile, a conventional prism will be less nice but you'll at least be able to see other cars' dimmer headlights and such.

    What I don't understand is, without a rear glass but with the digital mirror which uses a camera for the
    Polestar 4, what happens when the camera lens is wet or dirty during rain or snow? That camera will be useless which means the digital rear view mirror is also useless. Am I wrong in thinking this?

  • @davidanjo9752

    I had a solution for high beams fusing my retinas via rearview mirrors in the 1980's - very simple, not hard to do. Curious how well the camera works in heavy rain or, for my part of the world, snow - does it have a mini wiper blade? Blindspot maintenance is an area I wish they would focus on more to be honest.

    So let me get this straight. Companies are putting massive panes of glass over people's heads in the vehicles that offer no usefulness other than "I can see the sky while driving"... but the piece of glass (rear window) that is actually useful for seeing out the back of your vehicle is what Polestar wants to remove. This sounds like such a great idea. I wonder how much they will charge people to bring their Polestar 4s in for rear camera repair since an issue with the rear camera means absolutely no rear view at all. This is a moment where the designers did the whole "focused so much on what they COULD do, and didn't think about what they SHOULD do". This is dumb.

    cars and airplanes could save fuel by getting rid of all the windows, just having redundant, high fps cameras that feed to a screen where the window would be. they then could have some safety mechanism that would guarantee an easy access way out of the car in case of an emergency.

    • @DimitarStanev
      @DimitarStanev Год назад

      That's the stupidest idea I've read in a while, congrats. Not sure how exactly you're imagining that to work, the perspective and field of view won't be the same no matter where you place the camera. Also looking through a window isn't like looking at a 2d plane, it'll have to follow your eyes and respond by changing the viewing angle (what about more that 1 person looking at the screen?). And that's before we get to things like eye strain, fps, lag, resolution and added complexity/unreliability. Also seeing the face of whoever is driving is really important if you wanna see if they're paying attention, are they looking at you etc.
