@@songsbyspencer this also shows that you're smart. When I first watched one of your videos I subscribed immediately because of your intelligence. You are talented as well but it is not too often to see talent and high intelligence together. You are also really cool. I watched your facial paralysis video. As a doctor myself, I had Bell's palsy, I was way more anxious than young Spencer...
Cannot express how much I love that channel. Such a joy to see you composing with your heart and soul. I did something similar with a dice, and it's been HARD! Major props for checking all boxes. Great indie rock song, especially the rhythm section
Spencer, I really hope people get the true underlying lesson in this video. As a recording student in college, I was required to take first-level Songwriting. It was easy for me - being a life-long musician - with years of music theory behind me, and a penchant for poetry. But - one thing my professor stressed is the paradigm of IT'S A JOB! Songwriting is a job! People who write songs for a living dwell in a totally different headspace. For the money, the most militant atheist can write the most soul-stirring Christian song; someone who has never lived anywhere but the heights of Manhattan can write the most inspiring tune about the beauty of the Grand Canyon. it's. A. Job. If you want to make songwriting your profession, you absolutely CANNOT rely on personal experience or "inspiration". Much like your dart board, it's about GET IT DONE. I hope I've expressed myself succinctly. Now, write a song about that - - -LOL! Love you, brother!
You're not wrong! Any good song writer can write about anything and have it come across as sincere. However there is something to be said for the songs that go remarkably deep (John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album comes to mind). It hits at a level above just being sincere. I dunno, music is so magical I don't think there's a way to describe that sort of thing in a scientific way.
Good answer. Perhaps the songwriter out to make money will do a job, but an artist is inspired beyond a paycheck. The anxiety lurks in the balance between just enough and too much to handle. Keep playing. God has a plan for our ultimate good, even when we are anxious about His chord progression.
You man have what few have; you have an innate musicality, you have a natural gift for making music. You're very good at everything and you make everything seem so easy. Life is a spinning wheel and it doesn't always turn the right way. But music is the best antidote for all the poisons that this existence of ours holds. We are all in the same boat, for better or for worse.... Well done to you, keep it up, for what it's worth I'm here, my small part will always be there.
dude this is so fucking good- as someone who has anxiety and loves 90s altrock like Weezer and Green Day and others, this song is like a dream come true for me. my favorite lyric was definitely “I am blank” at the end of the second chorus because despite having anxiety, I tend to sometimes feel physical symptoms over mental or I don’t even know what I’m anxious about- and that just resonated with me so much. keep up the good work 👍
That's deep and so profound to hear. I watch other RUclipsrs for comfort so I get it. But to hear I'm having that affect on others makes all the hard work worth it!
Punk is the first music I fell in love with. The simplicity, the attitude, and the DIY aesthetic of it always spoke to me. That's why I don't go to recording studios anymore!
Idea for another video. Sometimes I find a clean slate to be very daunting, I don't know where to begin, the options are endless, so I end up just staring at the blankness of it for quite a while. And that's when I do the thing where I start with someone else's song/picture/story. No more anxiety over a blank slate. And no matter what it is, writing, painting/drawing, making a song, it works for any of these. What you do is start with something else, a thing that's mostly or all the way done. And you go in and start changing it up. Change it from happy to sad, colorful to muted, exciting to calm, whatever to whatever. What you're doing is changing it and changing it and changing it, adding and taking away, until what you have is absolutely nothing like what you started with. What would be an interesting video is if you started the video with your song, and went backward, slowly bit by bit showing us what you started with. And that way the reveal would be quite surprising, were we way off or were we way way off? Because if you do it correctly we shouldn't be able to guess what you started with.
@@kmacgregor6361 Glad to help! This has helped me a lot. It is counter intuitive to think that limiting yourself can actually be helpful, but sometimes the options are so plentiful that you just don't even know where to begin. This helps you begin.
This is a sweet idea! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten inspired by another artist, and then my song starts as a blatant rip off of the song that inspired me. Then slowly but surely, I change the key, chord progression, melody, instruments, and harmonies and the song is nothing like the original. I'll put that on my idea list, love it!
Amazing talent you are Spence! Love your work and what a great way to show us how to use talent to and entertainment to bring up a subject that many people can relate to. Good on you and hope to see this channel grow. Well done! 💪🥁💃👍
Dude you are one of the most musical people I've ever seen. You got the sound quality, you got the tools, the knowledge (musical and sound), video editing and you just deliver it all super ultra amazingly 🎉🤯 I can do some key drumming but that's also a super skill of yours 💪💪💪
Every (creative) artist suffers much more from anxiety, insecurity, and fear of rejection than the average person. The best cure is to embrace it and avoid being controlled by it. We're not going to die from it, but we're going to die with it. Oh, by the way, another nice one... keep them coming. Maybe it's not a bad idea to produce an EP and publish it through a mystery alias, like "ENIGMA" did long ago. When "ENIGMA" published their first albums, no one knew for sure who they were. This proved to be an excellent strategy to break down prejudices and unfair judgments if the music is good and coherent. Stay Safe.
I had a code for dice and rigged them up for Seven Chords in the Nashville Numbers. And a roll of both dice to pick the Key. Great to see you regularly. F minor bridge? 😂😉 Haha... Edit I thought you'd go to F minor. Awesome video Spencer.
How do you remember which drum goes with what key? The finger drumming is awesome. (the rest as well, but the rest I sort of understand how it works, the finger drumming not so much)
It's just from experience. The more you do it, the more you get used to it. It's really no different from a sample pad. But instead of hitting the top right pad for the kick, I hit a C!

This man’s keyboard drumming skills never cease to impress 😮
I appreciate that! I think I'll do a video with a drum solo on the keyboard. People seem to get a kick out of it!
This is genuinely a song that I would listen everyday, I loved it, I hope it will get on Spotify soon
The dart board is a winner. This should be a regular series
As he does each genre he could replace it with a new one on the board. Could use subgenres for more options.
I'll do more for sure!
Yes! Looking back, "Rock" is too general. In the future I gotta break it down to Metal, Grunge, Indie, etc!
@@songsbyspencer that would be great! I wouldn't mind seeing you land on hip hop with a bluegrass sub genre
Your channel really deserves to blow up, hope it happens for you
I hope so too. Thank you so much for the support, Janice!
"I'm running out of time" when double time sequence.. ı detect high IQ here 😅
I didn't even think of that when I wrote the lyrics. Must've been subliminal!

I like the chord progressions you choose to use, they're familiar without being formulaic.
That's a good way to put it. I like it to feel familiar but not too predictable.
