Great video! I'd like to add something: don't repeat too much even if the melody is really good otherwise it becomes Baby Shark 😂😂; record stereo doubles for the chorus (even more important than the harmonies); automate everything up: there's nothing more sterile and boring than having the faders static in a section that's supposed to be more in your face!
omg!! this is so amazing! i've been feeling overwhelmed watching these crazy production videos to make my chorus, but you made it so simple yet sooo good 👌👌 thanks man!
Thank you! I work super hard on my hooks. I gotta earn people's attention during the first 30 seconds or I didn't earn their view. For this one, I actually spent 8 hours writing the intro music and had 4 different versions until I finally settled on this one!
Great video, Spencer! You do such a good job of explaining the concepts with such simple (yet very high quality) examples.🔥 I might know too much to be your target demographic for your course, but I’ll definitely recommend newer musicians check out your stuff. 😎👍🏽
Hi Spencer, great channel! just found you and have been binging, glad to be the first to comment on this (I hope, says it's only 2 min old). I am going to be applying what I learned here and make some tracks highlighting harmonies and probably a cappella for TikTok. I will let you know when I drop them and give you and your channel credit in the video description and tags ;) Thanks again for all the time and personality you put into your channel. Your style is not only entertaining, but your production and editing makes your thought flow very intuitive and easy to follow.
Mate, just found you and your videos are awesome! So much information, talent and effort put into those and it feels like you really love what you‘re doing :). Keep it up
Great video as always, Spencer! As someone else said - don't overdo it with repetitions. Some songs (even hit ones..) get quite boring when you hear the same line for the 43rd time... I would do it something like: Astronaut Orange Microwave Pants Astronaut Orange - Everyone Chants! Astronaut Orange Microwave Pants The race... to space!
Your content is FANTASTIC. I love how you masterfully demonstrate the concept at the beginning and your examples throughout are so well chosen. Kudos. I'm planning on spending a lot of time with your videos.
i get your point about the choruses comparison... that being said, I like the 2nd a LOT. I would use both and maybe climatically build for the last chorus and use parts of the latter. Or as an instrumental call back later It was nice hahaha. I am not the expert, though. I am just the peanut gallery and enjoying your video :)
If I were to produce this into a full blown song, I would definitely have one of the choruses stripped down and the other produced fully. That's how you build dynamics and intensity!
I too want to say how great your videos are. Your video production values and what you’re teaching and how you’re teaching it are all exceptional! I did have a question. Are you recording all of those parts with a click track that you then take out for the final edit? Or are you experienced enough that you don’t need to use a click track? I’m finding keeping everything in time to be really challenging when it comes to adding layers. Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the support! To answer your question, everything I record is to a click track. In my opinion, no matter how good your timing is, you should always record to a click track.
Another thing to remember is that your lyrics for a chorus might not suck. They just might suck specifically as a chorus. But you might be able to repurpose those lyrics as a verse and they work perfect fine.
3:30 I don’t know that I’d call those examples “bad” and “good”… more like “worse” and “better”. They both lack a little specificity and therefore seem overly generic, making them SLIGHTLY relatable but not relatable enough. (Like Katy Perry’s latest single.)
You're a very good teacher. I can't remember, do you have video about how to turn a melody into full song? If you don't will you make video about it? I saw video about it, but I found it difficult to follow. You are much better to explain things like this. P.S.: I'm really curious how good are you in heavy metal 😀
@@songsbyspencer Does not matter to me. Your talent is a divine gift, I bet that you are a pro in different styles. Most of the metal hits use your teaching in this video. Have a great day!
Is your course downloadable or on a website you pay to host (if you stop paying, the training is no longer accessible?)? I don't purchase online courses because, over the last 25 years, I have paid and lost access to many of these informational sites. This is not aimed at you but at marketing promoters who have educated us to believe this is the option we should embrace.
It's on Kajabi. I don't see myself taking it down anytime soon, but if I ever did I would send it to everyone who is enrolled so they could download it and continue to use it.
wait i have a VERY serious case of this and it cant be earworms. since a late 15 to now a early 18, i will have eerie anime songs accompinied with twisted thoughts, the music themes are from, death note, kakegurui, and future diary. what all of these have in common is that theyre related to ungodly or evil/eeirie music themes and lateley music themes from YOU. I literally slammed my phone on the ground at max force and yelled SHUT THE FUCK UP for like 2 minutes straight. and if u think im lying i can show u the phone. PLEASE TELL ME UK SUM BOUT DIS. but BUUT when i play osu a game with catchy ass songs the ones i really like ill forget for a while and be unable to produce it in my head till i listen it again. WHYYYY
I really like the final result, but... nowadays it seems the trend is to strip back instruments and 'sound texture' in songs. A track like this isn’t radio-friendly because it’s too 'rich.' On the contrary, choruses often tend to have a well-defined rhythm section, a few bass notes (usually lowered by an octave), and a refrain that doesn't strain the singer’s vocal cords. I’m not saying I like this approach; actually, I prefer your piece, but as I said, it wouldn’t be radio-friendly. Peace.
You're right. I'm in the process of working on a super poppy song for a client, and in doing so I realize how important simplicity is. If you strip back most pop songs, it's literally 1 chord progression with only 3-4 chords, and only a couple strong musical elements. As a musician, having the discipline to NOT overplay is incredibly difficult!
I always thought the secret to good songs and a catchy chorus is TALENT? That is why only a few people can do it well and everyone else is boring and uninspired.
Natural talent is grossly overrated, and it's an excuse people use not to put the work in. Yes it plays a part, but I'm fully convinced that anybody can write and perform good songs if they want to and they work at it. John Lennon is considered one of the best songwriters of all time, but do you think he immediately started writing amazing songs right out of the gate? He almost certainly did not, but he worked at it and through that he became a fantastic songwriter.

Nice examples. You are hilarious at times.
I'm trying to incorporate more humor into my content. When people laugh, they learn better!
Your production value feels high, makes me feel like I am getting in early since it's only a matter of time before you pop off.
Thank you for the kind words! I'm working on turning this into my full-time job.
Love the intro! (and the rest of course)
great video - love your style of presentation!

One of these days I'll do a video with the METAL! Truth is, I don't have a whole lot of experience in that genre.

Ugh from 4:45 onwards I could not concentrate any more. Just got astronaut orange microwave pants on repeat in my brain!
That's the power of repetition!
Shit its in my head now. Astronaut, Orange, Microwave, Pants
no idea how I got to this page - was looking for scareface video. "my balls and my word" but this video is legit. great songwriting ideas

The song is this video was made purely as an example for this video, so it isn't on any streaming platforms and it isn't even finished!

Astronaut ... orange ... microwave ... pants ... 😔😔 it won't leave me
So sorry I had to do that to you!
@songsbyspencer 😂😂 all good

She's a heartbreaker!
I can only say: Astronaut, … :D
To be honest, I thought the first two melodies were rather complex 😅
