I've also heard that "Mr. Blue Sky" was Jeff Lynne's attempt to expand the McCartney bridge section of "A Day in the Life" into a full song. One small point of comparison: the panting breath in "Mr. Blue Sky" after the line "running down the avenue" and the panting breath in "A Day in the Life" after the line "I noticed I was late".

Noel Gallagher has zero right to complain about copyright, especially on such a common chord progression.
Does he not remember the intro to "Don’t Look Back In Anger," which is a blatant lifting of Imagine by John Lennon?
This is all so silly. Another example is when Radiohead were surprised when they got sued by the Hollies for “Creep" when stealing/borrowing from "The Air That I Breathe." The beat, bass line, chord progression used throughout, and the verse melody was used in the bridge of Creep. and then they tried to turn around and sue Lana Del Rey for using the chord progression alone, with her song, "Get Free." The saga continues...

Especially, the inversion with "Wonderwall" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" was able to show to me that not only melodies but chord progression instrumentalized (specified rhythm) are able to gain an orginal status in the sense of copyright. Where the very first example Beatles/ELO is strikingly chosen, as it shows that the chord progression alone cannot guarantee ... which makes me assume some mysterious relationship between rhythm and harmonies. A good mashup artist can blend songs together to the point where they feel like they were written that way. My favorite is "Intergalactic Spell" by The White Panda, which sets The Beastie Boys' lyrics against music by Alphabeat, but a mashup that Beatles fans in particular might appreciate is "Let It Be Liebe.Fertig" by DJ Schmolli, which has the Beatles music we all know and love supporting vocals from a Euro pop band most of us have never heard of.

Props to whoever made the subtitles because it's the first time I've seen that much effort put into them, especially in the parts where they're showing the chords.

One very good example that never gets mentioned of an unusual chord progression that was repeated in two hit songs is Ready To Go by Republica and Raoul And The Kings Of Spain by Tears For Fears. It's one of those cases where you have listened to these songs over and over again and never notice the similarity but when it's pointed out you can't unhear it.
Also, another song with the Yesterday progression is Ya No Te Espero by Silvio Rodríguez. So now you can remove that phrase at 3:09 lol.

That diminished chord in Yesterday cracked me up, no idea why. Just sounds hilarious, like someone taking the piss. Having said that, Dominic Miller plays it with a dominant, interestingly enough, and then he goes to a major chord. It's brilliant!

I once made a little mash-up between The Fear by Lilly Allen and My Iron Lung by Radiohead. It actually turned out lovely, especially layering both vocals as a two part thing.

There was a very popular rock singer in Brazil, Raul Seixas. One of his biggest hits, "Maluco Beleza", is very interesting. He took the chord progression from the chorus of John Lennon's Imagine, (You may say I'm a dreamer...) cut the progression in half, put the second half before the first half, sped it down and made his chorus (Vou ficar ah, ficar com certeza....) Very hard to notice but when you hear it, you can't unhear it. Very clever, indeed.

These types of mashup videos were all over the Internet like 10, 15 years ago. Even if people didn’t know the theory behind it, I think they intuitively understood when two songs were close enough to combine

The standard "Yesterdays" is in D minor and uses the minor 2-5 throughout so I'm sure that contributed if only subconsciously

Jeff Lynne worked closely with the Beatles, specifically George Harrison. They're good friends. Lynne even had George recorded some slide guitars for ELO's album, "Zoom". Lynne was heavily inspired by the Beatles, but he added his own twist of classical music for his own band, ELO, most notable in songs like; Fire On High, Eldorado (Overture/Finale), and even the album, TIME, which combines the sound of early 80s synths with classical elements.

Another Green Day song that sounds like Oasis: Basket Case & Don't Look Back in Anger!
Other songs I've managed to mash together before (with fairly common chord progressions):
Gangnam Style & Moves Like Jagger
Crystal Ball & Part Of Me
    Let It Go & Firework
Price Tag & Party in the USA
Stayin' Alive & Another One Bites the Dust
Thunderbirds Are Go & To The Sky
We Found Love in a Hopeless Place & Love At First Sight
    Domino & Last Friday Night
Dschingis Khan & Money Money Money

I’m glad you spotted this too! I’ve tried merging them when playing around on the piano myself, but it’s good to hear it done more professionally! I’m also wondering whether ‘California Dreaming’ and ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’ might at least be made to segue into each other (similar descending minor chord sequences, plus of course lyrics about leaves turning brown in winter).

Some Take That songs are similar to ELO songs, especially 'Shine'. I read somewhere that ELOs music is what the Beatles music would have evolved into.

Three like this from two non-rock genres:
I'd Rather Go Blind (Etta James, jazz/blues/soul)
    Tennessee Whiskey (Chris Stapleton, country)
Blue Ain't Your Color (Keith Urban, country)
Hear all three at karaoke, and enjoy singing the "wrong" song from the audience over the "right" one. (Not loud enough, of course, to be heard by the singer!)
