Such a criminally underrated channel. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another channel this good with this few subs. Hopefully the algorithm takes you for a ride soon, brother
Spencer supporting us through the black and blue with a black and blue guitar. Coincidence? Yes. But the greatness of this video sure is no coincidence, this is Songs by Spencer, baby!
The best part of this is that for just a little bit more money, you can get some actually good gear. I have a Sterling Audio large diaphragm condenser that probably cost me 80 bucks a few years ago. Unlike the 22 dollar one in the video, would a random person really hear a huge difference between it and something that cost several hundred dollars more? Probably not. 50 dollars for a guitar? Too cheap. 150 dollars for a songbird or ibanez or harley benton? sure!
No doubt about it. A good guitar and mic are only around $200 each. The difference between a $200 guitar and a $1000 guitar wouldn't even be noticeable to a beginner, as the difference comes down the feel when you play it.
You made so much with so little equipment, but with so much feeling! Thank you for sharing! In Brazilian Portuguese we say that "you got milk from a rock", what means almost a miracle.
That keyboard is more than enough for many! All that's missing is the pitch and expression flaps (maybe they exist in it as knobs). I only use the flaps when I play the likes of strings.
Most the knobs on midi keyboards I never use. I recently updated to a fully weighted keyboard and it only has a pitch and expression flap. No drum pads, no crazy buttons, just simple and straightforward. I love it!
Love what you do man, from my personal point of view, the hardest part is the DAW when starting, especially if you got some music background. But younger me really needed to see you dont need to be rich to get started
I think starting with a lack of resources can actually give someone an advantage later down the line. I started with a $200 guitar and a crappy 8 track recorder. I used that setup for about 6 years before I got a computer with a proper DAW. I got really good at making the most of what I had, so when I finally had good equipment, I was further ahead of the curve than most.
Hey google, place this channel with people who are not primarily interested in producing, but show it to people who just like music. They will love it!!!
It's nice to see you've found a place where you belong. Great content! I've been watching every single one of your videos so far, and was never disappointed. Such great content.
As I get older and my taste gets more refined, this rings more true. Production quality means less and less to me, and I even think rough edges add a lot of character to a song. The imperfections are what makes it sound human, which is the relatable quality we all love it music.
Thank you for the song, really touching. I didn't even use instruments for my song on my 20 years old laptop, only free instrument sound sample libraries, but I love the outcome because it is what I wanted to be, a kickass metal song. I still looking for solo guitarist for it to write solos for it.
Great video once again. I wish I had this kind of tech back when I first started recording songs. I'd love to see you do a song based on random words and key picked from the pages of a book.
That's a good idea! Thank you for that. Sometimes I struggle to come up with creative ideas for videos. I know System of a Down's Chop Suey had a similar instance, where the singer couldn't come up with a lyric. Rick Rubin had him pick a random book and open to a random page and sing the first line he read. That line is the "Why have you forsaken me" part, which is the highlight of the song. Wild stuff!
I loved the bit about the heart and soul you put into it. Time and time again people fall into the trap of wanting to sound like someone else, or trying to build up endless techniques and gear just to feel uninspired. The best inspiration comes from the heart. Your disarmingly honest and simple songs are a constant inspiration. Thanks for having my back ❤
No guitar, amp, pedal, keyboard, synth, plugin, or computer can write a great song for you. It all comes down to the work you put in. But you are 100% correct, the gear can definitely help. And good gear isn't even that expensive nowadays. A $200 mic and a $150 guitar and you're good to go!
@@songsbyspencer I am getting most of my gear from Goodwill... With a bit of TLC and minimal luthery skills a lot of guitars can be made to work quite nicely. Especially electric guitars!
I loved your song at x1.20 speed. You are such an inspiration for all of musician youtubers out there. I know a little channel that only has a webcam to record his covers on ukulele, he reached more than 10K subs ... So, you are right, it's not about the gear, it's about what you can share to the world with your heart and content :). Having said that, I definitly can hear the 578 dollar difference for the microphone XD. By the way, you forgot to mention the price of the DAW. I hope that you will reach at least 100K subscribers fast, your channel needs to be viral !
You should have went with the Pyle PDMic78, it's on sale for only $13 a lot of the time. I use it for recording vocals in my car when I have to be loud. Which is all the time.
Kudos do my musician friend, you just did the video I've always wanted to do, with your permission I would like to share it thank you for doing the hard work
This video is worth it - just to see that AMAZING EV RE20! Man - I gotta get me one of those! BTW - that pic of a Big Mac - - - that's false advertising by McDonald's. There is NOT a Big Mac on planet earth where you can actually see the meat without a telescope. Carry on, brother Spencer.
I put this on while I was washing dishes and I was 100% convinced this was some huge channel about production that I for some reason never stumbled on… I have no idea how you haven’t blown up yet. There’s no way you don’t know how great you are at what you do, so no point in saying “keep going blah blah”. There’s no doubt you’ll be recognized for this bro
I really appreciate the support and confidence! I hope to continue to grow this channel into a full fledged career, and I know it's all about consistency. I only have 16 videos as of now, so the next milestone in my head is 100 videos. It'll be interesting to see where I am when I get there!
I remember YEARS ago, I bought a similar $99 guitar on Amazon to learn on. It lasted less than a week because the front facade of the guitar eventually peeled up and away from the body due to the strings pulling on it. I had a good laugh. lol
I think with a bit more effort you could find better equipment for that price. But that is not the point of this video, you don't need $$$$$ gear to make and create wonderful music. I really enjoy the message you're trying to show in all your videos, good happy spirits! :)
Oh there's no doubt about that. The difference between a $200 microphone and a $10000 microphone isn't really that noticeable to me. The law of diminishing returns kicks in relatively quickly when it comes to musical gear.
Would be interesting how the song comes out with your "normal" Equipment. It is unmistakable, that this is very cheap equipment - except the shaker eggs (they are from Dunlop, like my picks since years)
@@songsbyspencer I guess I already suggested this once, but I'll suggest it again: I would love to "see" how you would approach a Rockabilly song. Stay safe.
i recorded my first song with a 15 euro interface and a 32 euro guitar and some free software and it sounded pretty good ... affordable gear has come a LONG way
It's absolutely insane. Not just in the audio world but in the video world as well. The cost you can get a 4K camera with 10bit color and professional editing software is nuts. A decade ago it would've cost 10 times the amount.
You got me beat! My buddy bought a new acoustic guitar for $40 one time. I was actually quite surprised at how well it played. Way better than the one in this video.
Hey Spencer, are you a trained singer? I notice in your vids you often do two, three or more vocal tracks etc. The vocals really make it. As well as the other layering techniques.
I feel as if expensive equipment isn't needed for a great song, but after hearing this, even with brilliant mixing the guitar sounds quite cheap and not great. Great song just personally feel as if there is a minimum spend for decent instruments, but you don't have to spend a fortune either
that is 100% true. You can absolutely go too cheap but once you get up to the $200 range on a guitar, its going to sound pretty good. The more you pay above that is more noticeable in the feel of the instrument instead of the sound.
Yeah it was pretty rough! And I didn't even realize the guitar was a classical with Nylon Strings. I've never had one so I had to watch a tutorial on how to replace the string. Never thought I would've learned something useful from buying a $50 guitar.
We can hear that the guitar sounds muddy, the mic is really poor quality. And when you say I don't recommend this guitar to a beginner, that is completely true. These kind of cheap instrument make the beginners more frustrated. At the end you created a great song but this is the result of your top knowledge and talent about music, which a beginner lacks.
For sure. It's a bummer when I see a beginner get the bargain basement gear. Especially when you can get a a good guitar and mic for only a few hundred dollars.

Agreed! Amazing channel.
It's very stylistic... it works, great song too.
