I just wanna say how much I appreciate the outpouring of support that I've seen over the past few weeks. I really wish I could respond to every single comment.. I'm absolutely blown away and moved by all the kind words, shares, comments, likes, and subs. It inspires me in a way that I can't describe, and for the first time in my life I actually feel like there are people out there that want to hear my music. Converting audio to MIDI is a great idea to capture live fill. You don’t even need that much of mics you can have like three since you’re still be editing afterwards you can then just throw extra cymbals in there by mouse.
I love this. First video and glad to catch you early on. Really awesome, creative, thoughtful. Exactly the things I want to see and support. No brainer sub. You're going places, kid 😂 But seriously. I'm looking forward to your success. Please let us know if you ever locate that manual!
Man, you're a lot of things, but certainly not a screw up, nor a dweeb. As a drummer myself and an audio production enthusiast, got to tell you man, your job is OUTSTANDING! Hope one day you can look at yourself and honestly accept the enormous grace of being able to do these great things in such a good way. Cheers!!
So here's the difference between someone like me who couldn't play drums to save their life and a talented drummer like you...the raw pencil drum performance was impressive...before you even replaced the sounds! LOL

As a psychologist, it warms my heart to see this. Art and creativity moves our feelings in such ways that allow us to bring some color to our worst moments. Depression is an annoying slimy goo that keeps us glued in a pessimistic and irritated corner of our self, draining our energy. That SUCKS. I hope you are feeling better, always remember to look for a therapist or psychiatrist (if you haven’t done so), thank you for the content and for the message!
Spencer, I’m a visual artist who has always been interested in music. This is first time I’ve herd or seen anything like this. Very creative and a great song. Hits the “I’ve been there” factor. Depression is something I’ve been through myself. Things are always better than you think. There is always a way to see it differently. Big hug bro. I am subscribed.🙂

Your performance put SUCH a smile on my face 😁I wouldn't even call the original audio bad sounding - your timing and velocity actually makes the desk sound musical enough haha
The drum with pencil was very interesting and fun to watch, but your song was AWESOME! I really liked your voice. Hope you're feeling a little bit better after bringing this song to life. Hugs from Brazil!

As a drummer who currently doesn't have a drum kit, I've always thought about doing this, but don't have enough microphones to get the triggering for every individual drum from one take. Was thinking I'd just take a recording and do all the drums manually based off of my live take, it's great to see how good the result is though with enough inputs!

Dude, this is one of the most emotional songs I ever heard - you just go straight after what it's like :). Have to admit there were a couple small ones in the corner of my eye. Sure as hell have not expected such a strong emotion from a Rockabilly meets Bad Religion style song or what the heck this cool genre is. And the timing and musicianship. Wow! That one line I do not even want to mention just hits hard. Some musicians claim that every song-writer has the ONE song in him where he pours it all out. And I am pretty sure this is the one.
That was an awesome tutorial, and a great song! Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing a part of yourself that other people would never have known. I know from experience that there can be strength and healing in doing so!

Spencer, this whole video is amazing. You blew my mind with the drum overlay. However, the finished track resonates with me so much. Feel like I'm in a very similar head space recently and hearing you put it to music made everything better for a minute. I appreciate you. You have a new subscriber and fan here. Keep it up and thank you.
I was asked to play drums on a string swing jazz record. "Keep it simple" they said. "You don't need anything but a snaredrum and brushes." It was priceless to see them when I put a newspaper on a table and told the engineer to mic it up. They could not believe their ears when they heard how good it sounded. I did the whole album that way.
Great content, your video was in my recommended. Can't believe the amazing quality on a channel that doesn't have thousands of subscribers! Subscribed!

Hey Spencer, it’s your first video ever for me. Amazing what you’ve done here 👏 I appreciate and admire you for sharing and being honest. Well done man Matt
Great tune, my dude. Might have to try this drum replacement trick. Used to have a proper drum kit, but live in a townhouse now and that's not so practical anymore. And hey, depression is a very reasonable response to the state of human experience. Been going through some really heavy trials myself lately - brought on by external sources, this time. Got to speaking about it a bit with a local bloke recently - a real down to earth guy, and a devout Buddhist. He put me onto a book called "Discourses, Fragments, and Handbook" by the Greek stoic philosopher Epictetus. I've read it cover to cover now, and it's been like new armour for my soul. When things seem to be going in the worst way possible, and you feel like you have little to no control in the matter - this is the one to read. It's not hard going, either... very practical and straight to the point. Namaste, friend, and keep going with your music.
What a great idea! I’m sorry you are/were struggling with depression, man. I’m praying that things will get better for you sooner. Keep pushing, you have some great stuff going on!
Wauzy! Amazing what you can do with pencils haha. Great bassline, great guitar work, sweet editing, honest funny lyrics. AND and and so brave & nice to open up and just be honest about depression and stuff. Your musicality and authenticity will give you lots of loving followers ✨✨
What a message you’ve passed on with this video and this song! Music has also been a way for me to deal with hazards in life, and I wish you the best my friend! You’re very talented, and I loved the content! ❤
Man, you’re a one man band, Spencer! Songwriter, audio producer, drummer, guitarist, pianist and vocalist, all wrapped in a single amazing package. I had to manually close my jaw with my hand after listening to that smashing song you played, because it’s just that impressive to find someone as talented as you. I’m sorry you went through a depression phase and I hope you’re doing a lot better now. But I want you to know, no matter what lies ahead in your future, you are an awesome person and the world is a better place with you in it.

Hey, really cool idea! 🤓🥁 Never seen something like that. And the song is also really good. 👍🏻 You are absolutely right that music can help against depression and other mental problems. It helped me for many years. 🥺 When I jammed with my friends everything bad just vanished. I hope you're feeling better now. Greetings from Germany. 😊
Informational, fun, skilled, sincere, geniune and with great technical quality. This channel is amazing, I'm glad the algo picked up this video, you deserved a lot more subs
I've been recording drums like that since the '80s but only enhanced the sounds with frequency manipulation-- no triggers! Sounded unique and great! Your song and playing are really fantastic and fun. Tasty, accessible, and concise! Thanks for 2 minutes and nine seconds of thoughtful pure pop bliss.
Drum replacement amazing, thank you. in your production your backing vocals really stood out as a great lift to the chorus, well done. I think your lyrics were very harsh on yourself, and for me, that made the song harder to listen too, despite everything else being excellent. of course depression is like that, there is no beam of sunshine poking through the clouds, and in that respect you communicated very well. i hope there is a beam of sunshine poking through.
Dude! This is like my new favorite video. I never thought I would see the day when anyone even rough tracked drums with pencils. This is like childhood dream fulfilment 1000x. Also, I loved your song. It reminded me of the things I write myself... eerily so, actually. To the point where you might even enjoy hearing one of my songs just to see what I mean LOL cause... Yeah, the style and melody writing is VERY similar. I even have a song titled "Depression Song". I really appreciate you sharing your feelings through music. I really hope you find a way to get out of that negative headspace that depression puts us in, so you don't have to stay there. And music is a place where you can be honest about what you are feeling. I myself used to write songs all the time with words a lot like this. I was determined that this would help people. And it does, to a degree. But I think that to truly help people overcome it, we have to introduce a solution. For me that solution was growing closer to God. And I found that I was dwelling too much on the darkness, trying to recapture the emotionality of bands I heard in my youth through imitating the emptiness with which their art was made. Emotionality is one thing, emptiness is quite another. Anyway, I honestly believe God gave me most of those songs a few years ago, to possibly help others someday... but to help ME in that moment. Perhaps that is what this song has been for you. I would encourage you to think about including more positive elements in your songs... keep the message real, and the brutal honesty, just add a potential solution to the problem in there, somewhere. This is just a thought, and not a "right or wrong" thing. I myself found that sometimes it was necessary to omit the solution to truly do the negativity justice, and that there is always another song for the solution if you feel that it will compromise the heartfelt message of the negativity. But I also found that it really helped my heart when I shifted my expression away from expressing all the negative to expressing sorrow followed by the hope I find in Jesus and God, and a statement of faith. God bless and have a great day... this was an AWESOME vid.
Awesome content bro! Also, i'm happy you have music as a platform to express and process what you are going through. Depression, meaninglessness and self-pity isn't a myth. It's real. But for you to talk and sing about it is so brave man. And a step towards wholeness... I don't know you, but for whatever it's worth, please know that as soon as i'm done typing this comment, i will pray for you. And here's a quick verse that has also helped me in my struggle of meaninglessness in the past: Ecclesiastes 12:13 "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, FOR THIS IS MAN'S ALL."
I’ve often said that music is my therapy but it actually mostly just comforts the pain. It takes truth to turn on the lights and that hurts my eyes blinding me to truth that would help me anyways. Somewhere there are doses in right amounts if I would be willing to take them. But then again, a temporary song feels more comfortable than the affliction of feeling pain so I might be tempted to numb the silence. But you can’t heal what you don’t feel. Good music sir, and I’m praying the root cause(s) of your depression is healed because the music there is sweeter than the music here. ❤
This video hits home. I really love the idea of DIY home production, even without a full setup. I’m a new musician myself, and drums are what I’ve been practicing the most recently. Massive props for bringing this whole project to completion, because I know how hard it gets when depression takes hold. Thank you for keeping the passion for art alive in me.
Today I was just thinking about the difference between a live drum performance and stringing together a beat in a DAW...this was an amazing example of why human talent shines through. While the example was awesome, I appreciate you sharing the song and your challenges. Sending lots of love and support while you work through this thing we call life...❤
Thanks for that brilliant video mate! And thanks for bringing awareness onto depression which is a super serious matter and for which professional care ought to be sought. I hope that you are being well looked after and getting all the support you need and in any case, be sure that what you are doing with this channel is really relevant and helpful to a ton of people.
man, i really enjoyed everything about this video, and about that depression: you already did the most important step: you had the courage to talk openly about it, this is the start to a journey to feeling better! it is so easy for us to dismiss our own depression as not being a real problem. search professional help, it made the difference to me, and the first step was admitting to friends family that i had something wrong despite.faking so well that everything is fine to everyone!
You already have a gift, a wonderful soul, and a purpose. Life is like a walk on the beach. You don’t fix the goal to get to the lighthouse you are supposed to enjoy every step.
Hi Spencer - your song really resonated with me. And it sounds Great! I'm sorry you have been feeling bad, you are obviously a talented musician/engineer/arranger. I really thought your song was good. I have subscribed and look forward to your next vids. :)
Love the pencil drums. Had a set up like it back in high school with an empty plastic jug of motor oil laid atop it with a piece of aluminum as my snare , a kick drum made from a large plastic trash can hit by a pedal fashioned out of wood and rubber bands and a rubber mallet, then a high hat that was a metal cookie tin. Toms were plastic tubs of various sizes. Of course, this was before youtube and midi, so it was strictly a "practice kit" that annoyed my parents enough to buy me a drum kit for my birthday, lol. Keep making music, man. It's therapy and artform rolled into one.
Great song! Awesome instruction on the drum sampling, and thanks for the for vulnerability. It hits home for me and I'm always glad to see people pushing through private struggles.
As someone with AuDHD and depression playing music ( bass , guitar , vocals, now learning keys and want to learn drums next ) really saved my life 69 million times over. You rock ! Depression is a weird thing and I hope it has passed since you made the video ! Hey Spencer, first of all I really have no idea why RUclips put you're video in my timeline but the algorytzhm sure did a great job by doing so. I'm absolutely blown away by you're video. It sure takes a lot of inspiration, creativity but also craftsmenship in making this video. You really are so gifted! Wishing you all the best that this experience helped you with fighting your depression! Thanks for sharing this & god bless you

This is amazing brother. Thank you for sharing what you're going through - helps others to do so too. Big love ❤
Not a screw up not a dweeb. If you're a good human you as good as anybody. That's for anybody who needs to hear it. Great vid!
What a message you’ve passed on with this video and this song! Music has also been a way for me to deal with hazards in life, and I wish you the best my friend! You’re very talented, and I loved the content! ❤
... and you're not a dweep!
This channel will go through the roof, not only are you the perfect mix between extrovert and NOT annoying, but also the production value is really solid. Wish you all the best!
Edit: @5:07 just hit me ... man, that was refreshing, honest and inspiring. Subbed.
Incredible!!!!!!! You need to be on the radio TODAY!
hey Spencer, sorry to hear you had to go through that, and thank you for the strong message about the power of music ❤ the track turned out awesome!
You are NO screw up or dweeb! This was incredible AND informative!
Awesome song
Thank you so much!
Great idea, great execution, great editing, great song!
What I want to see next? A video of you being absolutely happy, free from depression. Keep on rocking mate! This too shall pass. God bless you.
Thank you so much for your work! ❤ Loved the song, very relatable 🥺🫶
Sending love and support 😊🌸
The, "I don't feel good... Is there a reason that I should?" line really resonates with me.
What is crazy is that this isn't much more complicated than the typical editing done in a modern pop/rock production
Sending lots of love and support while you work through this thing we call life...❤
Great song! Very McFly-ish. 👍 "Music washes away the dust of everyday life". My music got me through a few tough times in my life. 🥰
You got talent son
man, i really enjoyed everything about this video, and about that depression: you already did the most important step: you had the courage to talk openly about it, this is the start to a journey to feeling better!
it is so easy for us to dismiss our own depression as not being a real problem. search professional help,
it made the difference to me, and the first step was admitting to friends family that i had something wrong despite.faking so well that everything is fine to everyone!
You put multiple people to absolute shame with that performance at the end, i did not expect that at all!
I'm freaking blown away by that drum replacement thing, gosh I miss having logic, I wonder if I can find something similar in Reaper.
Best pencil drum set I've seen. Love the melody.
I feel your pain brother, hang in there. We will all make it! Great work!
HOLY COW! The pencil performance was sick enough already! But the full song... Wow!
Watched for the drum track made with pencils, stayed for the song. Amazing! Subscribed.
Didn’t expect a ska punk tune at the end. That was great.
I love that your creativity knows no bounds. Go, Spencer!
Holy moly, your "full stack musician" skills are on fire. Love the well rounded polish.
Been through... Glad were still here.. Refresh! Thanks!
Bro, I’m glad this came up on my feeds. You inspired this dude. Much appreciated.
LOL GUY SAYS HE IS DEPRESSED THEN LAYS DOWN THE MOST INSPIRING HAPPY TUNE I HAVE HEARD IN QUITE THE WHILE TOTAL HUMAN THX BUDDY
Hey Spencer, first of all I really have no idea why RUclips put you're video in my timeline but the algorytzhm sure did a great job by doing so. I'm absolutely blown away by you're video. It sure takes a lot of inspiration, creativity but also craftsmenship in making this video. You're an excellent drummer even without a drumset you know how to drum sounds are miked in a studio, you then did a great job with the logic pro and wrote an excellent song. You really are so gifted! Wishing you all the best that this experience helped you with fighting your depression! Thanks for sharing this & god bless you
“I’ve played A LOT of desks in my days”
😂
Spoken like a true drummer ❤
If you doing a song about being depressed, you could use all of those ice cream pails you hollowed out as "drums". There are probably a lot of nearly musical objects in your typical kitchen.
Well done man. Let music keep healing you. It’ll never let you down.
I really appreciate the honesty about your mindset, thanks for sharing
