Based on the mixed reviews of this particular update, I'm sticking with my Mavic 2 Pro for the time being. Although drone photography is my hobby, I'm not willing to tolerate this type of blatant system flaw, notwithstanding the premature November 2021 release date. Considering a Mavic 3 upgrade investment, with yet another Smart Controller, I'm perfectly content to continue playing the waiting game. Thanks so much for your professional video contributions.
make sure u don't update safety fly zones.
they adding more and more of them.
pretty soon their drones will be just bricks.
My Mavic 2 Pro was a *lot* more refined than this drone, and had solid features not found in the M3. Besides the better camera, being more powerful and having more sensors, it's not worth the upgrade. Too many problems and not refined enough.
@@morgan_civ Affirmative! The more I wait, the more dubious I've become about an M3 upgrade for the foreseeable future. I purchased my Mavic 2 Pro about a year ago and have had little if any issues with it...sans my one-time unrecoverable "Pilot Error" crash atop a 70' tall pine tree located on a small island in the middle of a raging whitewater river. Although my Homeowners insurance covered the loss, DJI also gave me a 15% discount on the replacement last August; hence, my M2P is relatively new. To me, it makes no sense being the gratis R&D test lab dummy for any new technology-based product. You can always tell the "Pioneers", they're the guys with the arrows in their backs! If I was an accomplished Drone Guy RUclips creator, that would be a different story, but I'm just a photographer hobbyist learning to fly a drone and take pix at the same time.
I think the Mavic 2 is still a great drone! I'd stick with it too.
@@billykyle i wish i could buy a new M2p or M2z. Mine just crashed and died and i dislike all the possible replacements available right now.
Mavic 2 is a such a great aerial platform. Used mine for the last 2 years without a single hiccup
DJI has successfully deployed GPS technology on all their drones up till Mavic 3. The current GPS issues with the Mavic 3 indicates either a hardware flaw that cannot be fixed with software or a SERIOUS SOFTWARE ISSUE that DJI cannot easily fix. GPS technology should not be "rocket science" with DJI. The Mavic 3 should not have been released with a flaw like this that might be the tip of the iceberg for issues we will never know about and hopefully will never be harmed by.
I think it's just sloppy programming. The last major firmware they released for the 2S caused slow GPS lock times...
Agree. I bought air 2 fairly early on and it never took anywhere nearly as long. Gotta wonder how accurate the GPS position is while flying seeing how long it's taking to quote unquote lock on. I fear the receiver isn't very sensitive.
No there was a hardware change and they can't figure it out software wise
They’re using Chinese and Russian satellites in this model.
Billy, there is an EXTREMELY SIGNIFICANT FLAW in this firmware update.
The ability to vary exposure (ISO, f-stop, shutter speed) is no longer an option during hyperlapses. The work i do for my clients is extremely dependent on this ability as I capture hyperlapses during times of day where light is constantly changing (sunrise / sunset). I'm not only disappointed, I'm extremely shocked at this and need to find a way to revert back to the old firmware. As you know, this is very important for "holy grail" type hyperlapses.
If your thing is hyperlapses, DO NOT update the firmware yet until DJI fixes this.
The last update didn’t resolve the GPS issue.. So here’s my take… As far as I’m concerned if the M3 can’t take off within the similar time frame of its predecessors it’s a bust. This drone cost twice as much. Yet, seemingly has given us twice the issues as well. I won’t go into the other’s relative to how the drone was launched.. Suffice to say, yes it has a better sensor size and the largest zoom range than any other consumer drone but that means nothing if you have to sit around and wait for satellites. For God sake it’s a camera at the end of the day. The point is that a camera is used to capture the moment. What if you had to wait to use your smart phone camera or your DSLR for over 2 to 5 minutes? Most play this down because this device flies and can provide unique images. However, the glitch with GPS is extremely counterproductive and yes diminishes the overall experience of having this drone. This also creates huge issues regarding its commercial use. We need to be a lot louder about this!
The Mavic 3 uses the following constellations: GPS + Galileo + BeiDou...Air 2s uses GPS+GLONASS+GALILEO. Could it be the Chinese satellites? Does anyone trust the Russian satellites to remain reliable much longer? In 1991, during Desert Storm, the US Government scrambled the GPS signals so badly is was useless for commercial users. We had just received a GPS unit on a merchant ship I was on and it was so inaccurate it was unusable.
Before the update it took about 3 to 4 minutes to acquire 12 satellites. After the update it took about 60 seconds. Much better.
Nice!
You are among the best case reporting. I was hoping for similar, but my results are perhaps half of the longest times. Going to flash again with Assistant 2, but not too hopeful. 2.5 minutes is meh. I would be thrilled with anything under 90 seconds. And AIRSENSE is still completely broken for me and many others. Billy saying "the last issue until this drone is perfect is a sad state of what DJI has wroght with free product. I know from personal interaction how they unashamedly offer to buy public opinion. It's a legitimate way to do business, as long as you know how it affects publ8c statements.
What I don't understand is why the Air 2s, for instance, gets satellite lock in under 30 seconds while the Mavic 3 can take up to 10 minutes. This makes no sense to me.
Uses different technology
@@billykyle Are you privy to what difference that might be? Hardware? GPS module? No GLONAS or yes GLONAS? The way it caches satellites or if it doesn't cache them? Your review and honesty is appreciated.
@@billykyle They revert to GPS tech that was older or something?
.
I have a Mavic 3 and in a parking lot last week that could easily hold over a hundred cars I walked to an open area and after 10min still didn't have a home lock. I had to take off and let it hover to finally get enough satelittes. I honestly wish I hadn't purchased this drone, although I find the image quality quite good almost everything else about this drone is pretty bad. The stock controller is cheap, the DJI fly app is pretty awful with tiny text that's hard to read and I've had to delete and reload it on my phone and tablets after updates to get it to work well. I think it's way overpriced, and the image quality from the zoom camera is pretty bad even compared to my older drones with smaller sensors. I wouldn't recommend buying this drone.
I did not update my Mavic 2 in any way! But I tested Mavic 3 yesterday after the update and it quickly found 22 satellites! But after moving 100 to 200 meters away from the remote, it’s lost all the satellites! Did not fall! And it is still healthy! Either because of the jamming of that flight area or a new problem has arisen! In general, it was not very time consuming for me
It's not a step in the right direction if the problem is still there.
Sounds like bs to me
Tested today on a job. Having had the 4-5 minute wait at startup and after battery change I saw a significant improvement. Initial GPS lock was under 2 minutes and whilst still sorting settings. After battery swap the GPS lock was immediate. Should have been this way at the outset but so glad it is now resolved!
Did the update and still waiting for GPS so I put a coat hanger on it and I got all the satellites and 10 tv stations too! Try again DJI just don’t make us wait 3 months again
Lol
Today is Nov 22, 2022. I bought a new Mavic 3 Classic last week and still have this BIG TROUBLE, no GPS signal and I could not fly well, unstable. Imma return soon and go for Mavic Pro 2! New Flashship product with BIG PROBLEM! What's wrong with DJI??!!!
Will not be purchasing. Their coming out with a S version through the rumor mill. It will most likely address the these issues and add a new feature most likely. The problem isn’t environmental, it’s the particular chip set used. Before the pandemic DJI used its own chip sets which have more memory to cash locations which allows for faster and more stable GPS locks-and maybe faster and more satellite acquisitions. In this case their supply chain for these chips sets were disrupted. So what they ended up using was an automotive chip set which has less memory which I believe is causing the GPS lock issues and I’m not totally 💯 percent shore but may be influencing the slow satellite acquisition. The next iteration should have a DJI chip set to cure this issue….
Hi Billy. This is worth a read .. from an Australian. Will copy/paste it. Ready? Here goes .........
Well .. if I said my Mavic 3 was slow getting a gps lock and home point .. you could throw a whole lot of rotten tomatoes at me. I went out to front driveway of house to test. My screen said firmware update needed (to latest) Ok. I sat down and patiently waited for that to happen. I thought then well I’ll turn everything off and restart. Started the drone. Walked 2 metres to my chair. Powered on my RC Pro Controller. Had my stop watch ready. Thought I will start the watch when .. DJI FLY POPPED UP and I selected the Mavic 3. Bingo. Before you could blink an eye .. I was staring at the screen and looking at 21 satellites. Wow. How did that happen. Didn’t have time to start the stopwatch. Took it up straight away, homepoint, up higher .. gained one more satellite. Took it out off the coast and back again. Everything ran like a charm. What an amazing well behaved drone. Well done DJI. 👍 Merv Perth Australia. (Previously it would take several minutes. Will check if this miracle happens again tomorrow. Cheers guys.
awessome !farewell.broth,👐
Second!
I just got the Mavic 3 day before yesterday with the RC Pro and Im loving it!!! I have had no GPS fix delays at all here in Dhaka Bangladesh.
Me also no issues with mavic 3 in Tripura, India
are you under-cranking your video? or shooting at like 1/2000 shutter? because your motion blur and movement looks super weird and distracting......
I'm thinking that there are going to have to make a hardware change. I will not buy a Mavic 3 till this issue is fixed properly.
One thing missing that I still can’t believe, is that you can’t choose to increase / decrease aperture with the 5D button on the RC « Pro ». Not being able to shoot over 800iso in Dlog is a big problem as well ..
I have heard one possibility for the GPS issue is that because of the chip shortages they may have put automotive GPS chips in the mavic 3. Apparently they take longer to pick up satellites than the normal chips DJI have been using. Don't know if it's true but something to think about. Now what if they put those same chips in the new mini 3 and it has long GPS pickup. People are gonna not be happy.
What difference does it make if it finds a few satellites faster but you still are waiting overall longer than you should.. This is not a fix. It's a pacifier.. Stop apologizing for DJI. Why put out a firmware update that doesn't do what it's intended to do?
Im so glad i didnt buy a mavic 3 omg so many problems and lack luster footage. Well looks like im getting a Autel Lite plus or a evo 2 pro.
Any idea why DJI won’t release the SDK for the mavic 3? They already released the the SDK for the M30!!!
First
Never understand the point of why people write first? It just means it was luck and timing and that you were free to watch.
Why not write a comment about the video instead?
Billy thanks for what you do! It’s always helpful or informative for me
DjI has taken the fun out of flying. Many runway in my city. Im going orange.
My Mavic3 takes longer now after firmware update. 😮💨
1 minute 15 is still over 1 minute longer than the mavic 2 pro though :(
A drone with a shonky GPS doesnt instill much confidence IMO.
My Mav 3 use to take 90 seconds to acquire satelllites, but after updating, it now it tales less than a minute.
do you have your Mavic 3 set to BYPASS or BRAKE?
Hi Billy, not sure if you have seen on the replies but someone trying a scam and making it looks like it comes from you!
It hard to believe this is not a hardware issue and DJI is trying a work around with some firmware tweaks.
I've had "Improvement" - I'm at about 2-2.5 minutes cold boot. Better. Still needs help... I was at 4:30-5:20 before.
Stop saying it was "a little but slower" - that's YOUR experience. In YOUR locations and experiences. That bad one you had was more typical. I've NEVER gotten under 2 minutes on Mavic 3.
I'm glad the firmware fix for the slow satellite issue was finally released. Great testing, you got some positive results. It seems people are getting mixed results on the first day, so it be interesting to see how things shake out over the next week. Great testing Billy. And BTW, I got a home point lock in 58 seconds this morning using the RC Pro.
That's great to hear! You must have been flying from the beach!
@@billykyle I’m actually already in Florida for the Drone Meetup.
My guess on the firmware updates are probably putins fault. 🤐
Does the update address the broken Air Sense?
@Lon Denard Oh.. Interesting.. I had thought that from the previous update that it simply had stopped working. I had not known that they toned it down.. Thank you..
Apparently using a cheaper gps chip, perhaps Chinese? Gotta wonder how dependable and accurate the position is while flying. I surmise its receiver isn't good/sensitive is why it takes longer to get 11+ satellites.... software can't fix that.
"perhaps chinese" bruh.... the whole drone is made in China lmfao, its all chinese. I doubt they're using samsung or sony parts.....
Does anybody know if you can use litchi or drone deploy on the new rc controller.?
Is not your fault - you are only delivering the news about the update. Sucks that issues with GPS might still happen with some users.
Whether the drone gets 6-8 satellites faster or not is useless. It needs to get satellite LOCK faster. I updated and am still waiting 10 min for full lock in rural setting and still while flying it doesn't keep satellite lock.
Hello you have won🎊 text the above telegram to claim your prize🎉 🎉
This new update ruined my drone lol it doesn’t connect to any satellites at all
Is it worth upgrading from Air 2S?????? Man I wish the price wasn't so steep! 😂😂
No!
Living in the Scottish Highlands in a FRZ I’m allowed to fly but only in certain places due to Military aircraft traffic zones, I struggle to pick up GPS in under 5 mins but even when I’ve flown without GPS the drone recognises when I near a geo zone amazingly and warns me, so obviously it’s got some form of gps working.
Just talked to DJI Tech Support ... they said, "per consulting with our engineers, we have located the cause of this issue and will address it directly in a firmware update within the next two months. It is worth noting that satellite acquisition time, also known as time to first fix (TTFF) is also affected by internet connection." I said, "Ok ... I am using the RC Pro Controller, so if I don't have internet connection it will take longer? Is that what you are saying?" .... They responded, "yes that's our temporary solution to our pilots. we will work on it and solve it in the next 2 months." Good news to me!
I'm hearing reviews are mixed ...out here on the west coast for me - it's still about the same about 2 mins to set homepoint. I'm gonna try the with the Air 2s and Mini 2 after I update.
Third 🤔 Lol.
8 minutes to just say YES!
Ok fine I’ll watch the whole thing you pulled my arm!
I am glad I watch the video! It’s not fixed completely dang it! Well I really feel like I’m going to have to hold out on this one until DJI can properly repair or replace the Mavic three. Thank you for the video Billy!
If you don't wanna upgrade for the time being, the Air 2 Fly More combo is 20% off on the DJI site. Not sure until how long the offer lasts but I'd definitely get in on that if I did not already have the Air 2S.
My Mavic 3 continues to have this problem after the upgrade. I have seen a believable post on the DJI Mavic 3 (Official) Group on FB that suggests that due to chip shortages, DJI used an alternate version (the "automotive" variant instead of the "pro") which has less memory to store ephemeris data. It seems we have a hardware, and not a software, issue.
I’m still waiting for an update that allows the camera to take photos that match the aspect ratio of a full frame camera. Right now I have to guess how much I’m going to crop off to make the photos match my Nikon. USD card is a pain to get out. And that harness thing ridiculous I was able to buy an aftermarket gimbal cover which seems to solve the problem. But the excessively long wait time for satellite connection is ridiculous. I sent my Mavic 2 pro back this morning to get it fixed I can’t wait. All in all I think the Mavic 3 is a bit of a hype
I purchased the M3 right out of the gate and assumed it would be a better platform for photography than my M2P. While the camera quality of the M3 is better I use the M2P more frequently mostly due to the GPS lock issue and the lack of third party apps to work with it (Litchi and Drone Deploy). I wait on average 6 -10 minutes where I live for the Homepoint on the M3 and less than a minute with the M2P; that M3 wait time is longer than it took to set up my Inspire 1 Pro and get airborne. This update appears to be one step closer to the M3 being what it should be. Thanks for the video.
With version 500 my average time in Vermont for 11 satiates and home point, was around 8 or 9 minutes. Since the 600 update it has averaged 2 to 5 minutes. Hoping for continued improvement. Flew it in Hawaii 3 times last week - less than 2 minutes, 7 minutes, and the last time was 45 seconds.
Another reason why i won’t buy another dji
It's an Elastoplast update
It worked SO well I returned mine. 😂 Over that junk drone.
:)
DJI 😍
Only had one opportunity to test it out, and yes it is much faster. About 30 seconds to get 8 satellites, and then another 5 in 15 seconds. Launched in under 60 seconds with 15 satellites.
Sadly all the operating systems for the Mavic 3 are not fully developed. They rushed this thing out prematurely. Active Track 5.0 is horrible, has come close to wrecking mine multiple times. Hopefully, one day they will have things running at least as well as last generations' version. The drone has serious potential but the software is lacking.
It really is a great aircraft, loving the camera!
MA2S is my favorite drone and for these reasons! DJI really dropped the ball with this expensive drone. Hopefully they learn a valuable lesson with future drones!
Great coverage of the GPS issue! In my testing with the build 600 firmware, I saw the same as you. It takes longer to get a lock in some cases and it's faster in others. So it's still a work in progress, but at least now DJI acknowledges the issue and is working on it. Keep up the great work!
Hi Billy, Thank you for all of the great info as always. I have noticed that when shooting in standard color profile (not log), in manual mode, the drone auto adjusts the exposure to compensate for quick changes in my scene...like a wave breaking. The drone auto adjust for the bright white of the wave and ruins my shots. In manual mode! I don't see anyone talking about this issue which is a huge problem! I have a buddy who has the exact same issue (we both film over water), so I don't think that this is just a problem with my drone. Any thoughts? Id love to send you example footage so that you can see what im talking about. P.S. I don't shoot in log, but my buddy says that the problem does not happen in log.
Im in the UK, not too good.
well try other locations.
Ita a start to get this issue fixed.
30s max, then its shit
Today I went from a 6 minute wait on Thursday to a 2 minute wait today. Still not great but getting better
West Coast is where you see the Pacific Ocean .... Seattle awaits my friend !!
lol
I need to test more. I only tried once since updating in my backyard. It was taking on average 6 min in prior days. Yesterday was 1 min 10 seconds. I need to try in a couple more min.
Wow. Not so bad
So sad!
What’s the reason why it takes so long? What was changed?
Why can’t I download d-log video from the DJI fly app I get an error every time I record d log and import it to the fly app but it gives an error message when trying ti download to my phone
Interesting, I haven't noticed this
Billy, thanks for your update on the new firmware. Living in DFW, 4.5 miles from the big airport, I Got 12-13 satellites with 30 seconds, but probably not a true test as I always do an imu and compass calibration as well as gimbal whenever I do a firmware update. The drone was on for several minutes so not a true test, and subsequent flights in same day have always obtained satellites quickly as you stated in your video. The true test will be tomorrow; I look forward to meeting you again at the Florida meetup. One other thought, back when I started flying drones in late 2013, it was well known and expected, that my blade chroma 350qx would always take 4 minutes to acquire gps, and that was only 5 or 6 satellites in those days; im not sure, but the competitor Phantom 1 may have taken just as long, and we didnt think anything about it in those days. I’m sure DJI will continue to improve the gps issue; in the mean time, im looking forward to tomorrow’s real test of the firmware upgrade.
GoPro Karma 4 lyfe
In Germany it took me 15 min. in my backyard (Version 500). After the update it took 5 min (the first try). A second and third try took 10 SEC at the same position!!!
I will drive to different locations and test it in real live scenario soon.
That's a great improvement!
I love this new update!
Wait, DJI actually made release notes that weren't "Improved safety"?
Lol
Not for me. Almost worst since upgrade. 5 minutes for 8 sats and 5% of my battery.
Wow
@@billykyle Good amount of people in the forums who updated with no fix.
I just tested mine here in the UK. It took 41 seconds to get the lock in my back garden. I’m quite happy with that. It used to take about 2 mins from the exact same spot.
That's a good improvement!
𝓟Ř𝔬𝓂𝔬𝐒ϻ 🙏
It is unbelievable that a drone like this one has so many problems since its launce.
I know
So you think it’s still fixable by software and it’s not a hardware issue?
Not sure.
@@billykyle appreciate you keeping us all informed in these great videos and your knowledge 👍🏼👍🏼
I one time missed a whole sunset because of this
Damn, that sucks!
Great to see your channel growing 👍...always enjoy your videos.
Thanks 👍
Very good information as always. I haven't done the update yet, but it's true. I am definitely in a no-fly area I only live a few miles from the airport and if I started my drone inside the house it tells me that I can take off so I quickly pick it up Take It Outside and I can take off but it does have its limitations. And I only fly 120ft high around my property. But if I land the Drone and try to take off again it tells me I have to get authorization that's because by that time it has acquired more satellites. I am going to update my drone
That is a pain!
Didn't know you was having a contest. What is up for grabs
Excellent video as always. When last did you do a compass calibration please?I usually do one after a firmware update. Just need to add that I don’t have a Mavic 3 as yet.
I usually do when moving spots
Hi Billy, Is it you that posted the above? Just wanted to check - thx
Do you have any issues with the cine pro controller hdmi out? I can’t get mine to output any video.
Haven't tried, tbh
Did you think about checking your resolution output ? Personally it was the reason why it wasn’t working the first time :)
Great video as usual. Note the Mavic 3 does not have a GPS issue it has a GNSS issue. In future videos consider use of term GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) which encompasses all Satellite systems. GPS is only one of the four constellations (GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, BeiDo) the UBX-M8030KA GNSS chip used in Mavix 3 supports. The. UBX-M8030KA can support up to three constellations at the same time (application configurable as to which). DJI Mavic 3 specifications page reflects DJI have chosen to support GPS, Galileo, and BeiDou on the Mavic 3, and not support GLONASS. Those whom state Mavic 3 has "GPS" issue are unknowingly implying the issue is limited to GPS, and is not an issue with Galileo or BeiDou which Mavic 3 uses. Perhaps most aren't aware they are doing it because they think GPS refers to all Global Satellite Navigation Systems? Maybe they are aware and consider GNSS relationship to GPS to be similar to tissue paper relationship to Kleenex. When they ask somone for a Kleenex they figure everyone knows they mean tissue paper. So they see no issue using term GPS as they figure everyone knows they really meant GNSS?
Exactly! It’s not the drone but the group satellites it’s using.
Hello you have won🎊 text the above telegram to claim your prize🎉 🎉
So glad I wasn’t the only one having this issue
Yeah, it's a lot of people

Glad to hear!
@@billykyle Maybe I was too soon, should of waited longer before I tested, next day it still took 2 mins to get sats!
Interesting they didn’t release the .601 firmware that DJI forum members are testing that also include zoom improvements and appears to actually fix the gps lock times.
What .601 firmware are you talking about? Are we going to get another update right after this!?

This update Didn’t help at all. Took me over 5 minutes this afternoon to get the gps signal.
Seems like it's worked for some people, but didn't work for others in different areas
I was so frustrated with my Mavic 3 up until today. I have only tested the new firmware once so far, but it was very encouraging to see the M3 grab 20 satellites in under 2 minutes on a cold boot! Formerly it took up to 15 minutes in the same location! More testing is required but I am hoping the FW fixes it... meanwhile I still own my Mavic 2 Pro fleet to use. GPS acquisition time is very important and improved but the airframe still has other issues. Specifically it is not as stable in flight as the M2P. Thanks for this update Billy!
What stability issues do you have in your M3 that is better in your M2P. I had an M2P before I sold it to get my M3. Just curious!
@@f13dfx what I have been noticing is that one of my favorite shots is the eye of God... The Mavic 2 stays locked right in and centered as I ascend and rotate whereas the Mavic 3 wanders a bit. You can see it happen in our Seneca falls video for the abandoned Mill ruins section of the video. I'm not sure if that's related to the GPS struggling to keep 12 satellites at any given moment or not but it's not good. The camera on the Mavic 3 is incredible, but like I said the airframe is far from it. I wish I could bolt this camera on my Mavic 2 airframe but I can't.
So it’s still rubbish then !
Lol, not quite. Still a great drone when you look past the GPS issue
Update didnt do shit.
Lol
The new firmware on my M3 has made improvements in satellite connection but is still not as good as my M2. I'm guessing the firmware is just wringing the most out of bad hardware. Fix our hardware DJI!!!
Hoping they keep fixing it!
There were two types of mavic 3,s made, one with a OVAL zoom lens, which was made with all the best parts inc but not limited to the GPS processor, and the lens on the telescopic zoom camera.
If you have a Mavic 3 with an oval zoom lens then you have the best version, the Mavic 3 with a round lens means your GPS processor came from the automotive industry, which is why this drone will always have GPS issues.
This explains why some reviews said the zoom camera is fine and other reviews say the zoom camera is rubbish!
I wrote to DJI about this telephoto oval v round. They replied that the camera surrounds come from different manufacturers thus the difference, and there is no difference in camera quality.
most annoying is their geo fencing.
