The answer is to do a recall of the Mavic 3 to replace the GPS. To do this, DJI should setup a registration page for owners to submit their information to get the unit repaired. When the registration is complete, DJI should allow access to a prepaid shipping label and establish a date for the owner to send the drone to DJI. This would keep DJI from being overwhelmed with drones and provide a short turn around time for the owner to receive their repaired drone. Additionally, if the owner had care refresh, the coverage start date should be updated to the date the drone was shipped back to the owner.

Until Skydio, Autel, or another one rips into DJI's lead and market share, they have only a bit of motivation to do a lot of favors. Ken that article on DJI forum is not factually correct, people are so desperate for info they are starting to make stuff up. The Chipset they are using is the same it’s just the automotive version that has higher compliance requirements for car use.
The UBX-M8030 no matter the version has the same GPS performance. The automotive industry version simply costs more for those applications usually with higher temperature requirements and it’s designed to comply with Electronics Council's various grade specifications including AEC-Q100 Grade 1.
I put a big post on there and he removed it with the thread. 99% of what he is saying is totally wrong.
There is a lot of hype and fake info around this right now it’s getting silly. Yes DJI have an issue here but it’s not a specifically related to that automotive chipset.
This was my full response to him
The M8030 models have the similar internal layout of CPU and SRAM including the amount. The differences between the automotive and professional grade is electrical characteristics for heat , EMI and some other things mostly around reliability in harsh environments such as vibrations and temperatures. Devices labels as automate grade will
Automotive variants are more expensive due to the Additional checks but have no features drawbacks like less rom or ram. It’s a the same Ublox core. DJI do not use GPS memory on board the Ublox chip to store data for smart features. any GPS data needed will be stored in lookup tables in the companion SOCs running the smart shots in ram on DJI side of the Mavic 3. The Ublox chipset is fairly simple in the sense it handles everything and that’s passed out over Uart, USB,I2C or SPI. The Ram and ROM are onboard the digital block in the modules and not externally accessible for use other than writing firmware.
DJI choosing the Automotive variant changes nothing major over the non automotive other than costing them more. There are many ways DJI may have had to change the implementation of the GPS such as not using external ram for storing additional data or changing the Ublox configuration however there is some things people need to understand.
There is a difference between Ublox 3D Lock and DJI GPS Lock. A GPS can be configured to lock at different accuracy levels however that has zero impact on what DJI are telling their flight stack to accept as a valid lock. For instance the Ublox could lock at a HDOP that’s higher than DJI want and they will simply wait for it to drop to the relevant level.
That image being posted around of the Mavic 3 GPS module with the unpopulated area is very likely a second compass or controller for something like beacon, it is not SQI flash as it’s the wrong pin and it’s out side the shielding. The M8030 off the top of my head has 2Mb of onboard flash in all models. While it does not require external SQI flash it is still recommended for certain applications. For instance when using Glonass it’s advised to have SQI flash for additional configuration data. That would be located under the shielding can and not off to the side of the PCB. Remember DJI often make multiple variants and even design it with features they never use due to costing and marketing. This has been the case for many years.
Right now there is no evidence to say they are not using SQI flash, it is recommended for additional configuration data with the likes of Glonass, if they have it would also means they can’t properly use Ublox AssistNow but I don’t see DJI doing that tbh, we just need to see below the can to confirm but I’m expecting it to be there.
There is too much hearsay on this and there needs to be far more proper testing. This may still be a results of the shift to BeiDou but we need proper data, we need to see results from ublox u-center at same time and locationto see what’s going on. We need proper data not just assumptions.
People also need to stop looking at this as sat count, what’s important here is HDOP and how DJI are interpreting the Data the GPS provides. Everyone is looking at the module but that may have zero cause on what’s going on here. The DJI Lock is all on their side, the GPS is simply streaming its data out, what DJI do with that is another matter.
A final note on DJI them selvs, as some know I have many years dealing with them in many different ways, they are a fantastic company however often what is publicly said or share is not based in full realty or fact. Often the people who really can sort issues or need to know about them don’t know and are in siloes. And do not assume for one minute that posts on social media, Facebook and this group even get to the right people either. Most of the support staff responding on there and other places are low level customer services, the odd PM does post but its like walking into the Genius Bar at Apple Store and expecting them to give you details on Apples M1 potential SSD arcatecture issues. Yes the engineers used to swing buy here DJI Forums from time to time and probably still do now and then but DJI has grown well beyond that now for the most part.
It’s very simple overall, DJI have years of designing GPS, but that’s not to say something has not bitten them here, don’t expect public acknowledgements of issues, they never been their way on thinks like this . They will quietly fix it or they won’t and they will move on. History is littered with some DJI products with unresolved issues, I own half of them.
For those not happy with the current gps wait as long as you’re happy too, if you’re not happy return it or more onto something else. Posting here every day for answers won’t get them or change anything, Provide them losses though returns, data and info from logs but understand that may never get to the people who really need it.

This should be more visible as the OP on DJI’s forums was wrong and I realized that after checking the specifications UBX provides on UBX-M8030-KT, UBX-M8030-KA. The internal memory on all of them is the exact same specs and it is used as you stated. So I don't know why they posted all of that when it was easy to verify that isn't true.
However, I did take some interest in some of the posts that showed images of a seemingly missing component on the GPS module for MA2s vs. the Mavic 3. If that component really is missing external SQi flash storage, maybe that’s really the problem. Since Ubx recommends the flash storage when using GLONASS which we know the Mavic 3 doesn’t have enabled, maybe since they were going with Beudou they figured that external memory wasn’t needed? and now they have been seriously bitten by an oversight? Would be great to know what’s up here. Hard to believe though they would prevent themselves from being able to use ubx assistant as you said so even that has holes in it. Curious what that component might mean or not.
All speculation of course, if they do end up releasing an M3S and the GPS issues are fine, there will be a LOT of pissed off customers if no exchange is offered.

... but then how do you explain that the same hardware with newer software (Dec. 2021) suddenly has poorer GPS performance?
New functions have been added (from the user's point of view), a software bug could have "slipped in". But DJI should find something like that within 100 days, right?
The fact that they still don't get it might indicate that the (many) new functions are to blame...
      How could one explain that...?
And another question along those lines: could it mean that DJI is now stopping development of more features for the M3 altogether because an "imaginary" limit has been reached here...?

Cannot believe memory may be a reason. Been designing GNSS chips into automotive electronics for many years (being a HW developer) and µblox is one of the best brands you may find in the industry. The grades of chips (i.e. standard, industrial, automotive) usually only refer to the lower and upper temperature levels the chips can cope to stay fully operational, they are guaranteed to stay operational. Normally, consumer electronics has some 0...70 degs celsius, chips for industrial (and sometimes automotive) applications need at least -20...+85 degs celsius and (to be used worldwide) automotive applications may need -40...105 or even higher (125, 150...) degs celsius. In automotive applications you not only take the ambient temperature plus the temperature rise in the electronics housing because of emitted heat into account, you also have to be aware where your electronics is mounted, i.e. engine compartment or attached right below the roof.
As a drone will generate much heat there may be issues if you replace a chip with one of lower specs.
The Time To First Fix ("TTFF") depends on having a) satellite data from earlier sessions stored in the internal flash and b) you know roughly the exact time and date right after powering on, to be able to calculate ahead the stored satellite data to the now-time. If one of the two sources do not work you will encounter a "cold start" which may need up to 12,5 minutes, even with good field of view to the sky.
To enable a GPS chip for "warm" or "hot starts" you have to provide a running Real Time Clock ("RTC") to the chip. This RTC has to be powered all the time, even if the external power supply (here the flight battery) is removed. So you have to add a small buffer component, may be a battery or a capacitor. RTC components need very low currents in the nA or µA range. But if the buffer cap drains to zero the next start of the GPS chip will suffer another "cold start". It then has to find the first satellite to get the time right and then it will be able to calculate, which satellites have to be in the view right now.
The amount of memory to store the satellite data ("ephemerides" and "almanach") is not large, so I would presume there will be no difference between the three chip versions. You just don't need different memory sizes for operation.
So I would think the problems in the Mavic 3 (the long TTFF because of cold start) will rather be found in the RTC buffering or a bad power management that interrupts the writing of satellite data into the chips internal flash, compromising the data for the next warm or hot start. All this might be possible to be corrected in software, but may also need a hardware fix. This depends on the system HW/SW and I think noone outside of DJI will have near as much information to even think of a fix.

  • @BlairAir
    @BlairAir 2 года назад

DJI gave a detailed answer to a customer on the issue. Some of it is questionable but some makes perfect sense. The FIX requires internet (A-GPS?) and cold boot is after 40 minutes. You said 35 here. That part fits. I get 1.5 -2.5 mins. when near WiFi or hotspot with phone to RC Pro. I would demand a swap if they put out an S that fixed it.

I think we are pretty clear that DJI has NO interest in keeping customers happy and will do whatever they believe will be best for their bottom line. What happened with the credit for customers that purchased an RC Pro separately when they purchased a Mavic 3? Posted and then retracted later. The GPS update is bullshit. After update, my mavic 3 now takes just as long to lock onto 12 satellites and bounces between 9 and 15 while flying saying that GPS signal is weak - WHILE FLYING. This is outdoor real estate photo shoots - nothing crazy. DJI putting out a Mavic 3S? Sure, they'll do it - the don't care if it pisses off people. Arrogance is what I classify that as.

To not piss off us Mavic 3 owners (I have the Fly More...), they need not release an S model. Their only way out of this is to release a M3 Pro. Focusing on a better/usable tele lens with manual settings and RAW capabilities along with faster GPS of course. Maybe even a color matched RC this time.

I am new with drones and going back and forth with buying Mavic 3, Mavic 2S and new Mavic Mini 3 Pro. I was very exiceted about Mavic 3 and it's paralax effect on tele lens but since there are problems I am not sure now. So I am going to bay Mavic Mini 3 Pro with remote with screen and will buy Mavic 3S later and use remote control with screen. Second option is Mavic 2S + RC from Mavic Mini 3 Pro with screen (not sure if they sell remote separetly), not a fun of using phone as a screen. What do you think shuld I buy Mavic 3, Mavic 2S or Mavic Mini 3 pro or maybe somehow Mavic 2s + RC with screen. I will use it for youtube mostly but I am very sensative to video quality, just hate poor quality video :) Thanks

Worst Drone I have bought. Out of all the dji drones I have had. Most expensive and I seem to waiting since I’ve had it for them to fix it. I should have waited I put my trust in dji. Never again. I think they should offer an upgrade scheme. So we can upgrade to mavic 3s. If you have a faulty hairdryer fridge television. They do a re-call and replace faulty goods. They should do this with mavic 3 after all it was expensive???.

Honestly, I do feel jaded by Dji all the way around. Not just the problem with gps but other things as well. In my opinion, they are a backhanded company. So we spend all this money on the Mavic three, only to find out it's basically a dud. Instead of just coming forward and saying hey, we made a mistake with this drone. They just come out with a new model and don't say anything. It's not just that. The signal being dumbed down in these drones is getting ridiculous. They are doing that behind our backs now while still promoting the 6 or 7 miles all because they think you should be baby-sat over the VLOS laws that are completely uncalled for to begin with. More and more restrictions on your own drone. Forced updates to control user's and God knows what else. I Know you said Autel isn't the answer, but in my opinion it is. I think the video quality is better anyway which is what it's really about in my opinion. Great video. So yes, I'm getting away from DJI and going with a more integrally intact company.

Without a doubt, the Mavic 3's camera is spectacular, the battery life is very good, but it also has this problem with the GPS, here luckily it always takes less than 2 minutes to be ready.
But what everyone seems to have forgotten is that to this day we haven't seen 200fps at 1080p in slow-motion mode. The HLG on the main camera and POI on the tele would also be appreciated.

( I doubt DJI got more than one GPS chip suppliers or difference GPS chips so they got difference in GPS hardware parts on drone and It causes the issue)
since It caused by hardware then It will be never fixed properly by just software update.
p/s: I have both mavic 3 combo and cine version but I have to say gps on my combo version is much faster and more accurate than cine version.

The last update didn’t resolve the GPS issue.. So here’s my take… As far as I’m concerned if the M3 can’t take off within the similar time frame of its predecessors it’s a bust. This drone cost twice as much. Yet, seemingly has given us twice the issues as well. I won’t go into the other’s relative to how the drone was launched.. Suffice to say, yes it has a better sensor size and the largest zoom range than any other consumer drone but that means nothing if you have to sit around and wait for satellites. For God sake it’s a camera at the end of the day. The point is that a camera is used to capture the moment. What if you had to wait to use your smart phone camera or your DSLR for over 2 to 5 minutes? Most play this down because this device flies and can provide unique images. However, the glitch with GPS is extremely counterproductive and yes diminishes the overall experience of having this drone. This also creates huge issues regarding its commercial use. We need to be a lot louder about this!

I've been using the Mavic 3 since it came out and had been using an Inspire 1 with the X5 camera and a Phantom 4 pro before. Frankly I really dislike the Mavic 3. Everything about this drone except for the image quality of the primary camera is just cheap. The app even after updates is a downgrade from my previous drones. The text on the screen is to small even on an ipad. The controller is the same one used on cheap consumer drones and there's no way I'm spending $1100. to upgrade. The controller also needs an aftermarket adapter to use anything larger than a phone. You have to put the battery in the drone to charge it but you have to remove the battery to get the memory card out. The secondary camera has lousy image quality and now it turns out the first batch of Mavic 3's with the round camera opening came with an inferior secondary camera to the ones now shipping. The GPS even with the latest update still takes forever to get lock even though it will now get lock in places where it wouldn't before. I regret buying this drone and will probably sell it.

But, if they put an automotive GPS chip in the 3, that would mean, at least to me, that dji would have to recall all of their sold units and replace every chip. I would be pissed after spending that kind of money. Who wants to buy it used, knowing it has these issues. You might get half the money back of what you originally spent. I agree 3K% with you, I have swiched to using Autels (Lite+ and Evo2Pro) for my professional work because of this issue. And in fact, right now my Mavic 3 is on the way to DJI because it crashed against a building wall after loosing GPS signal, that's correct, so the drone initially gained 12 satelites, then when I flew it up an close to the building that I was photographing, the GPS signal was lost, drone started drifting, and a wind gust slammed into a balcony. Nobody was hurt, but the drone was destroyed. I am beyond disapointed at DJI and what they did to the Mavic 3. Them releasing a Mavic 3S is a slap in the face to all of us who bought into this shit drone

About the crash of your Mavic 3: was obstacle sensing on when it happened? And could the building, when it was close, have obscured so much of the drone's view of the sky as to block the signal from several of the satellites being used for the aircraft's GPS fix?

They way I've been able to overcome the GPS issue is to immediately take off after booting without GPS lock, go straight up and hover at 60-70ft, I always get GPS lock within 20-30 seconds even on a cold start. Not sure why this works but it has for me. This may not be the safest way to do it (at the chance you may get a disconnect within those few seconds) but I've been willing to take that risk to save that much time. Give it a shot next time you're on location and see if it works for you. Keep up the great work buddy.
