Converting h.265 to ProRes for Final Cut before editing it is a good solution for older/slower computers. Then you can also export it fresh every time for output.
Vouch for this comment, it actually compresses the footage depending on where it's going to be uploaded. Also keep in mind when you need to edit footage through any software, your bitrate is EVERYTHING and your encoding settings can make or break the quality of footage. There's much more to it than just that, but I don't want to write a book. If you're someone who plans on using footage for your own video edits/footage to upload anywhere you need to have a good understanding of video encoding things
Thank you so much! FYI, I found out you can make duplicates of an H.265 video file and convert each duplicate to a different format without repeatedly exporting the same original file. This approach can save time and maintain the quality of the original file. Here's how you can do it: 1. **Duplicate the Original File:** Create copies of your original H.265 video file. Ensure that you have as many duplicates as the number of formats you want to convert the video into. 2. **Video Conversion Software:** You will need video conversion software that supports the formats you want to convert to. Popular tools include HandBrake, FFmpeg, and Adobe Media Encoder. 3. **Convert Each Duplicate:** Open each duplicate video file in your chosen video conversion software. Set the export or conversion settings for each format you want to create. This might include adjusting the codec, resolution, bit rate, and other settings specific to each format. 4. **Start the Conversions:** Initiate the conversion process for each duplicate file in your chosen software. This will create separate video files in the desired formats. By following this method, you can generate multiple video files in different formats from your original H.265 video without the need to repeatedly export the same source video. This is especially useful when you need to cater to various platforms, devices, or distribution channels that require different video formats.
I love how you provide downloadable full quality samples of the drone so that way we can test it out and see if it’s even worth it to purchase. Also I think that the regular Mavic 3 is the better Value for the buck.

I'm flying just over a year and started with the Mavic Air 2 Flymore, loved it, then got the DJI fpv, absolutely love it, then when the Mavic 3 was announced I set about trying to sell my beloved Mavic Air 2 and did sell it now I've ordered the Mavic 3 Flymore and I'm buzzing to get my hands on it, I'm pretty new to the game and it's something I've fallen in love with, happy flying BL 🚁👍
@@belovedLion80 great choice, there's a 2018 and 2020 Macbook Pro in my house and both belong to my daughters and I use the 2020 one to do my editing, which I'm totally new to also, but the Intel chip isn't great handling 4K 60 footage, the M1 chip seems to be a beast which I will need to invest in at some point.
@@Me_Abrar hello abrar, so I had the original Air2 not the Air2 S, so for me it was a massive jump, I did not have the Air2 S so I can't directly compare them.
I'd be curious to see another footage/codec comparison of a shot with lot of motion in the frame, and if the h265 still holds up. I assume the codecs were indistinguishable because a still shot like that where the data isn't changing much isn't too demanding in terms of bitrate.
@@johnbanks9392 While it's always questionable due to DJI's choices with H264/5, there's no inherent reason to question the quality of H264/5 'IPB' relative to ProRes 422 HQ. H264/5 can be either an IPB codec or intra-frame (I-frame only) codec based on the encoding settings. But even 'IPB' H264/5 exceeds ProRes 422 HQ quality with or without fast motion within the 200Mbit/s VBR ceiling imposed by DJI in the Mavic 3, at least up to 4K UHD 10-bit 422 30fps content. Otherwise, given up to 300Mbit/s, there's nothing in the ProRes lineup that can match H264/5 IPB or intra quality up through 8K 16-bit 444 120fps content (alpha channel support not withstanding). Billy's friend was of little help with the distinctions between H264/5 and ProRes 422 HQ as well. Specifically, ProRes 422 HQ is not 'lossless' but deemed sufficiently 'visually lossless.' The same can be said of H264/5 as it exceeds 150Mbit/s with 4K UHD 10-bit 422 30fps content, for instance. If DJI had allowed the full 240Mbit/s guaranteed write speed for legacy V30 U3 SDXC cards, then even 5.1K@50fps footage in H264/5 VBR (IPB or intra) would qualify as 'visually lossless' while slightly exceeding the objective quality of equivalent ProRes 422 HQ footage. Of course, DJI could have adopted the faster V90 SDXC (UHS-II) socket from circa 2011 with 720Mbit/s guaranteed writes. Then of course nothing in the ProRes lineup (including ProRes 4444 XQ) could match the quality of H264/5 in any case. So ProRes was exclusively a workflow decision by DJI, while the H264/5 bitrate limit may have been added to keep H264/5 from exceeding the quality of ProRes 422 HQ with 5.1K@50 footage.
@@christophersoto8905 The best value for sure. Be sure to select VBR (vice CBR) for the best results. Since I responded above, I've noticed that H264/5 in DLog is 10-bit 420 in the Cine (while the ProRes recordings are 10-bit 422). That 420 chroma compression won't be noticeable for drone footage at high res (4K or better) in any case. But a noteworthy decision by DJI, that won't likely be changed through firmware updates (but who knows). Also, for H264/5 the 'Normal' color mode is 8-bit color. That 8-bit would become an issue under heavy colorization or exposure balance in post, but that's why there's 10-bit DLog available.
@@wingsfromheaven8788 I'm curious though. Can the M3 Cine record H264/5 at a higher bit rate than the M3? And if so, would I still want to use ProRes at all?
I think DJI has done a fantastic with product placement in Mavic 3 lineup. Classic, pro & cine. Something for every level. I love to shoot tele and zoom into subjects and play with the compression. It’s so cool to have a subject against a backdrop far far away. So much creative potential there.

Great explanation of the differences of Cini model, and how most of it involves the ProRes codec. And thanks to breaking down the differences in files formats, how much larger the ProRes ones are. I think I will pass on the Cini model, I don’t have a need for a ProRes work flow at this time.
Hello Billy. You earned my sub with this video. Whereas other youtubers have concentrated on fancy edits, you have actually told us what we need to know. As far as I can tell, yours is the only video that actually talks about file sizes for example. One other thing that I feel is worth mentioning is that on PC, using Davinci Resolve, Pro Res is just easier to edit. It's a much smoother experience, as you are not needing to decompress on the fly. I feel like £2000 more for the cine is fair, given the remote, licence and 1TB drive included. Thanks again for the genuinely informative video!

I’d like to see some night video comparisons with the ProRes. How about the skyline an Ben Franklin bridge? One thing clear in your example clip is that the current CODECs are really quite good. Also would like to see more clips with the 7x camera and how it could be used to dramatic effect with foreground subjects, instead of just zooming in to a distant, blurry landscapes.
I am one of those hobbyists that bought the Mavic 3 alone. It's the first time I never bought the "Combo" but the the money was just too much. I like the 3 but am finding it is very different to control compared to the Air 2. Because I love photography, I do love the camera, zoom, aperture, and multiple video settings.
One thing I noticed and was odd was when you first start up and bind.. it doesn’t make you do a IMU and compass calibration out of the box like it used to.. I had crazy flying issues at first too and once I did that it was nearly fixed.. it still seems twitchy when cornering.. im guessing they’ll improve it through firmware..

I use Compressor on 2019 MacBook Pro to transcode h.265 footage from my Mavic 2 Pro. This is then imported into Resolve 17 Studio and works well. The Intel Macbooks 2019 & 2020 have dedicated chip for h.265 ( and other stuff). You can also create optimised media within Resolve 17 which is Prores on Mac or Avid DNxHQ on a PC. This gives good results and edits easily. This is also used on GoPro 7 and DJI Action 2. I don't see why it would be any different with the Mavic 3.

After extensive testing in Resovle and pushing colors to its maximum levels i could not find any advantage of prores on the Mavic, the qualifier seems as much choppy and noisy as h.265 (h.264 is a bit worse but for most scenarios will be usable) compared to prores coming from ninja v on sony a7s iii or blackmagic cameras... which leave me thinking that DJI somehow crippled prores codec and its nothing more than a sticker slap, if they would implement prores RAW i think i could justify byuing cine in a year or so but right now you wont see any difference unless you have a lot of movement like in Potato Jet Examples. Side note: non overclocked 3060TI cuts through h265 like butter and i only uses 5% more GPU compared to h.264 with same grade, with Temporal NR they both playback at 22 fps on uhd timeline (3 frames, better processing). thank you for provided files Billy
1TB SSD NVME are £91 here in the UK so cost is cheap for those , larger sizes than that are more costly but those but even a WD Blue 2TB sos £150 so DJI could easier fitted 2TB and cost is not slot more the cost issue here is licence fee and the smart controller . Surprised they aren’t offer pro res LT and normal as that would save lot of space in pro res format
I own both drones. M3 makes 10x better photos and videos in low light. M3 blows Air2s away. Also much better colors and clarity. Big upgrade. No doubt.
@@myytchannel6632 in many cases the difference between those two isn’t huge. There are stunning videos on RUclips shot with an Air 2S. Many thanks. This is exactly what I have been looking for. A concise tech comparison of the Mavic 3 models. I have an Inspire 2 with Prores. Yes the computer can handle the files easier, but I can’t see the difference in quality in the final image (provided the initial exposure was reasonably correct). More and more, I think the standard Mavic 3 Combo will be fine. BUT, I really want the better controller in the Cine kit, as I am used to using the brilliant Crystal Sky. @@billykyle Still don't know which direction I'm going and whether to pull the trigger. I'm pretty happy with the Mavic 2 + Smart Controller (V1). So upgrading to the non-Cine 3's seems like a step down unless I also get the new controller...which basically puts me into the Cine. It's a conundrum. Do I really need a $5K drone? Probably not. Want? Absolutely!
Playing with your samples (and thank you for making them public!) I noticed a funny thing in FCP 10.6: the ProRes clips stay sharp whether on pause or playing, where the H265 is a bit fuzzy on pause, but then becomes sharp when playing (in best quality playback setting in the viewer that is, of course). Set the viewer to 100% to see for yourself. I'm on a M1 MacBook Pro 13" with a 5k 27" LG display as my main monitor. At first I thought I had spotted the "compression" between the two clips, but it turns it goes away during playback! 🤷🏼♂️

Can you change the recording quality with the cine version to record at a lower quality comparable to the non cine? Are the cameras the same and it is just a license for the ProRes that the cine version comes with? I am looking at the cine since I want the pro controller.

Thanks for all of that information @Billy Kyle. This is what I was looking for and it solidifies my thoughts on not buying this drone as a hobby flyer, especially the Cine Combo, for now. That being said I would not push the Fly More Combo aside if one day it becomes a little more affordable. I would love to have the 360 obstacle avoidance and the camera's capabilities. I currently own the Mini 2 and the awesome Air 2S so I am really happy with that hangar of drones. Sorry to have not seen you at SpinUp2021 this year but maybe next time! Peace!
At the point that you need ProRes, most productions will also want variable lenses and this can’t do that properly. That telephoto lens just isn’t great and can’t record ProRes. So basically you still need an I2 for most ProRes situations. Kind of disappointing actually.

So OK got a question? If I want the Mavic 3 and I want the RC Pro controller, being also to buy a 1tb card ($300+-), would I be better off getting the cinema version as to get the Mavic 3 fly more ($3000) and the controller ($1200) on the side and a 1tb card ($300) . Seems the cost of the Cine version ids not that much more at $500 more (technically add the ($180 filter) the cinema vs is $380 more than getting the regular 3 and everything that comes with it. So my question is, for what you get with the cine version and I love the pro controller, should I get the cine version even just for the controller and the option of doing the pro res even if I don’t use it often in that res? Thanks for your time and reading all this.
I was of the same mind on this. I fly a Mavic 2 Pro now with a 7" Crystal Sky and DJI said that the Crystal Sky monitor doesn't work with the Mavic 3. Having a smaller monitor has been of growing interest for the sake of usability, setup/breakdown speed, and less batteries/cables/chargers to manage. For me, it wasn't that much of a leap to get Cine model compared to purchasing the Mavic 3 combo + controller separately.

After extensive testing and very surprisingly, the Prores footage falls apart more quickly when pushed than the H265 footage! (In Lumetri Color try the Hue vs Luma tool and you will see what I mean) Certainly made my decision easy. To be fair, the likely advantage of Prores from an image quality (as opposed to workflow) point of view is that the low compression should give better motion performance. Shame we don't have footage of 100,000 fans all waving their flags at a football game! That very quickly shows up motion artifacts due to high compression. No question based on the clips that Billy has generously made available there is no advantage (actually a disadvantage) with the Prores footage compared to the H265 footage. I'll get a Fly More combo and purchase the RC pro separately. Still works out to be quite a bit cheaper than the Cine.

Great video. I'm keen to download and look at the files. One other negative of the Cine version is that you can't just "pop" out the memory card, put in another and start flying immediately. You have to power on the drone and connect it to your computer to download from the inbuilt SSD.
This is exactly why I would never purchase the cine. I can’t imagine not being able to transfer the files once the batteries are exhausted and having to charge first. Seems crazy to me.

Great video! Thank you for breaking down differences . Prores vs Normal differences are about post color… and they’re only as good as the colorists pushing them to their limit. 1 for 1 is not really showing what prores really does on color . Kind of like saying raw and a log-c with rec709 are the same thing if you throw a rec709 on a raw file … you didn’t really push the raw file to show how much more it can do than a log-c prores file

The only thing I can se people getting the Cine would be the top pick would be the ability to do "Drone Mapping" which I didn't know anything about till recently. I don't see a normal need for thermal imagining in most cases. Couldn't the DJI Mavic 3 and Classic be updated in the software to use drone mapping? The drone only does what it is technically told.

Looking at the pricing of the new Smart Controller as a separate purchase (US$ 1,200 approx), plus the approx US$ 1,000 licence fee for Pro Res (and factoring in the 1 Tb drive, second ND set and high speed cable), DJI can justify the price difference between Fly More/Cine bundles.
Yes that’s why I got the cine version instead of the fly more combo, it’s actually cheaper getting the cine if you buy everything separately it adds up to more

Always love watching your videos as very informative, i would say that DJI have added on the price on the cine version with Apple ProRes Activation Key for ProRes rather than absorbing the price and the proof of that is if you already own a pre mavic 3 smart controller then that will not work on this new mavic 3 where the base controller will work on both old and new = more profit for DJI, i guessing the update in January 2022 will not include for the old smart controllers to be used with this new mavic 3 ??? Shame there is no option to buy a non cine version of mavic 3 with a 1TB of storage and a combo with a smart controller but maybe that will come in the future with a pro mavic 3, I’m guessing there are a lot of people that would like this new drone and it’s on there bucket list as it’s on mine as not owned a DJI drone as yet

How are you liking the offload workflow? Just love the idea of dropping of my drone off at DIT at the end of a day on set. 🤪 Also, do you need to power the bird to offload?
I want the cine because the controller it comes with matches the drone. The grey controller may work fine but it looks like they just threw a generic controller in when this drone is supposed to be special. They could have at least matched the colors. Great review but you lost me when you where talking about loosing quality if you export over and over with H264 and H265. Do you meant if you use a file that you exported and have it in a another project and then export you'll loose some quality? Or if you export the same project a few times it will loose quality. Never heard this before Billy. Please let us know. Also with Mavic 3 no cine. Would the highest quality be H264?
I typically shoot H265 on other cameras when given the choice. Also output H265 main10 in resolve with DCI-P3 and sRGB color/gamma. Colors look richer once uploaded
Thank you so much for the footage in this video and the previous one! the question of death is is the cine worth it against the 3 combo ?! I played with your footage. Even pushing the colors to levels not possible and the zoom to 1000% I can not distinguish the prores 3 cine of the h265 of the 3 standard ... Dynamic range, sharpness, tones, everything is the same despite the fact that I was trying (and wanted) to find a difference. I'd use it for professional work, but for the moment I am not convinced to pay for the cine knowing that i can buy the remote separately with the 3 combo .. In addition to that the pro files are 10x heavier than the H265. Tell me if I'm wrong!? The only thing I can see is that maybe in the future DJI would release updates that would make the cine version even better
Converting h.265 to ProRes for Final Cut before editing it is a good solution for older/slower computers. Then you can also export it fresh every time for output.
Apple Prores 422 HQ is not a lossless codec (according to Apple). Otherwise, great video.
FYI,
I found out you can make duplicates of an H.265 video file and convert each duplicate to a different format without repeatedly exporting the same original file. This approach can save time and maintain the quality of the original file. Here's how you can do it:

Sounds Like a plan. It was between the Mavic 3 or the 2021 16” M1 MacBook pro 💻. Got the pro.
@@DroningaboutIreland was it worth it to switch from air 2 s to Mavic 3? how much difference could you notice
@@Me_Abrar hello abrar, so I had the original Air2 not the Air2 S, so for me it was a massive jump, I did not have the Air2 S so I can't directly compare them.
I use ND 64 and higher for Hyperlapses. It makes cars and birds blur out, making for a smoother look.
I'd be curious to see another footage/codec comparison of a shot with lot of motion in the frame, and if the h265 still holds up. I assume the codecs were indistinguishable because a still shot like that where the data isn't changing much isn't too demanding in terms of bitrate.
Yep, it's during fast motion that these IPB codecs rear their ugly head
@@wingsfromheaven8788 this just made me want to get the fly more combo instead of the Cine
Everytime I want to know something, I can find that on your chanel. Seems like you know everything about what I am thinking.
I think DJI has done a fantastic with product placement in Mavic 3 lineup. Classic, pro & cine. Something for every level. I love to shoot tele and zoom into subjects and play with the compression. It’s so cool to have a subject against a backdrop far far away.
So much creative potential there.
Yes! Good morning Billy. I was pondering this question myself. Can't wait to jump on this video after my 9 to 5 gig. Good video to make about the different packages.

Well, you just saved me $2000 😂 thank you I've been frustrated for weeks deciding between the fly more and the cine. I spent too many hours trying to get all the info. Seeing the actual footage helps

Thank you Alex! My finger is feeling better now… looks worse than it feels!
The advantages of prores will show up when editing multi-layered video tracks, effects, and speed changes. Most ppl won't do those types of editing, so H.264/265 will be fine.

Just bought my Cine version. Can’t wait until it arrives!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
finally somebody comparing different codecs and giving files! you made my choice so much easier :)
This video is truly a relieving G.A.S. killer. Thanks for the transparency, Billy! 😁👍
Thanks for the concise and professional review as I’m looking to buy. Other video reviews I saw were not good.
Thanks Billy. I really appreciate your thoughts. You are one of my go-to reviewers on this particular drone…👍🏼.

Would be nice to see a real comparison between Mavic 3 ProRes and Air2S. I mean the same views/scenes shot with both drones
I own both drones. M3 makes 10x better photos and videos in low light. M3 blows Air2s away. Also much better colors and clarity. Big upgrade. No doubt.

Any downside by running the Mavic 3 Fly More Controller with the Tripltek 8 Pro tablet, as opposed to the new DJI RC Smart Controller?
I am asking this question myself and do not know yet if I will buy the RC Pro Controller or the Tripltek 8 Pro.
Working on a review comparing them
@@johnmcmurphy1007 I have the Smart Controller with my Mavic 2 Pro purchased last February. Initially, it had firmware download/upgrade issues and, finally, DJI replaced it. Painful, to say the least! I like it, compared to using my Samsung S20 Ultra, but am looking for the larger/brighter screen. My other concern is that the new controller is advertised to provide enhanced connections with the Mavic 3, but I can't quantify that value statement.

Ever fly along the Schuylkill from near the Walnut St. bridge? Great shots of the bridges, would be great for a night hyperlapse.
For the Cini you might as well buy a M AVic 2 enterprise for that price
Another great one in the books Billy 👍

I think you would see a difference between those codecs when that footage is blown up and projected.
Great video. I'm keen to download and look at the files. One other negative of the Cine version is that you can't just "pop" out the memory card, put in another and start flying immediately. You have to power on the drone and connect it to your computer to download from the inbuilt SSD.
You can still use a memory card in the cine if you want to…
@@djg1028 true although not if you want to shoot Prores which is presumably why you would get the Cine version.

I want the cine because the controller it comes with matches the drone. The grey controller may work fine but it looks like they just threw a generic controller in when this drone is supposed to be special. They could have at least matched the colors. I may need to visit the hobby store for some charcoal grey spray paint.

As always very helpful, and again with a link to original-footage. Great, thank you! 👍
You’re spot on!
