Improving Mental Health and Self-Esteem: 5 Lifestyle Changes That Made a Difference

  • In today's video I am talking about some very needed changes I brought into my lifestyle as a way to improve the state of my mental health and self-esteem.
Some of these changes seem so small, but having had them for a few weeks in my routine, I can honestly say that I feel like my life has changed for the better.
From a mental health perspective, my anxiety is much more under control, I have more peace, more joy, my mind is more focused and I feel like I have found some freedom.
From a self-esteem perspective, I just like that I am doing things that are good for myself - makes me respect myself a little bit more.
I also feel so free from my phone, and I no longer spend so much time doom scrolling on social media. I still plan to re-install instagram, but for now, its been so great to take a real and very much needed break from social media.
Something worth noting - is that in the UK, we get free therapy help under the NHS. I know that's a privilege so I just want to mention it on here - I know that's not the case everywhere around the world, and for that I am genuinely sorry.

    About my and this channel:
On a journey to change my life and live up to my potential. I am documenting it, so come along and let's pursue the best there is for us out there.
Topics I will cover: self-care, mental health, mom life, crafty life, fashion, womanhood, cooking, travelling.
About me: I’m Alexandra and I live in Oxfordshire together with my husband and our adorable daughter. My hope is that you’ll find a lot of positivity on this channel.
P.S this channel started out as a sewing channel, but 3 years of posting only sewing content has left me wanting more. So whilst I want to respect my beginnings, it's time for me to go after what I feel is in my heart, and that's to document my life and share about my experiences as I am on this journey of squeezing all of the good juice that this life has to offer.

Taking instagram breaks feels so good! It helps my mental health/clarity/stability so much. I started taking months-long breaks a few years ago. When I found myself really missing the inspiration and seeing what people were up to, I downloaded it, but once it felt like a compulsion, I would delete it off my phone again. I've been slowlyyy learning to trust my body/nervous system when she gets overwhelmed, and now I can blithely delete the app whenever I feel it making me anxious. Plus, the fact that Instagram is literally programmed to get us addicted to it makes me feel spitefully happy when I delete it! haha
Sending you hugs and high hopes for a clear, happy, healthy mind! ❤

Haha! Yes Instagram is designed to get us addicted - which is so scary! But yes, totally agree with you. It’s nice and it feels a little rebellious to delete it! X

Congrats Alexandra. You show enormous courage by in sharing this video. Small changes can make a big difference. Leaving the house is a big one for me too. Still feeling the effects of lockdowns and working from home made me feel too comfortable spending all day at home. I'm trying to make an effort to go outside more, because I always feel better when I do. It's a small thing, but I know it does wonders. Wishing you the best. ❤❤

Ah thank you. Yes, defo felt nervous sharing this.
And I think I also feel the same way with going out because of lockdown + working from home. It’s just so comfortable to be home all day.
Wishing you all the best as you try to push yourself literally out of the door!
Sending love, thank you for watching and for the encouraging words! 💕

I started leaving my phone in the kitchen at night over a year ago and it's been amazing. I bought an alarm clock - because I'd forgotten those existed and needed my phone to wake me up!! I still want to be better at not wasting so much time scrolling, I use instagram for work so can't delete it but I would get so much more done!!

Ah so you’re me in a year’s time! It good to hear that it’s only going to lead to good things! Yes I have an alarm clock but mine is a little different than yours - mine’s a 2 year old crazy chicken haha! 💕💕💕

@@AlexandraBurnett Haha, my little human alarm clock is 5 now and it's very rare that she's awake before me these days. I'm a morning person and love the calm and quiet of the house before everyone else is awake. One of my funny little self care things is just to open the back door whilst the kettle is boiling when I first wake up and just breath in the morning air!

I completely agree that exercise and just getting outside makes a big difference. I go to the gym every morning and as long as it’s not raining, I ride my bike to the beach everyday. When I’m riding my bike I don’t wear ear pods or anything like that, I just appreciate the sound of everything around me and day dream a bit. As for my phone, i don’t spend much time on it at all.

Just watched this video for a second time. I can relate to so many things you mentioned - stopped watching to delete the Insta app once again. I had deleted my account sometime in 2020 but I love it for the sewing inspo so eventually signed up again. But yeah - it's an on off relationship for now. Have you been back? And how has it been?
I love the idea of getting on the mat and finding playful ways of moving.I struggle to leave the house too. Today I motivated myself for a little walk up along my street and up the hill, to sit on a bench and eat an apple then go home again. Big little step!!
I'm happy you were able to ask for help and receive a spot for therapy. Mental health has been a big topic in my life for the past few months and I've been very grateful to have access to a support network. ❤
It feels like I'm writing you a little letter - sent through the interwebs. I wish you a very lovely Sunday!

Hello, this has been just the loveliest message to receive on a Sunday!
Thank you for watching this twice.
I feel so encouraged that you’d find this useful / helpful!
I am happy to report that I have kept up with all my 5 changes - including not being on Instagram. Even though I said I would take 30 days off, I enjoyed my time off so much, I am continuing with it.
I have only checked it a few times only for messages.
Your lovely idea of going for a walk to eat an apple sounds so genius!
A little mission and a little treat at the same time! Genius!
Thank you for writing to me. My Comments section has been slightly dead since I haven’t posted sewing related content and trying something new, but seeing this comment reminded me of why I do what I do and that I am headed in the right direction! 💕💕💕

Love this! So very relatable. Thank you as I am very much the same. My phone is my ever present companion (more than my husband!). I am going to start putting it away more and picking up the books & sewing I feel I don't have time for! I also love being at home but just a walk to the end of the road can really make you feel refreshed mentally and then once I'm out I often venture further. Hope you had a lovely lunch and are keeping up with your changes 😊

I quit Facebook and Instagram a couple of years ago but before I got rid of them completely I made myself the rule that I only followed people I had met personally. This reduced the accounts I followed to a few family members and two friends.
I've never had twitter, tiktok, snap chat etc and I limit my time on RUclips to about one hour a day and disable the app in-between.
This video was full of great advice, I hope your headspace continues to improve. Take care.

I admire you so much. I’ve been where you are and I’ve asked for help. It is a huge step to do so and you should be extremely proud of yourself, which I can see you are. This video you posted, I’m sure will help other people as well. Mobiles take up so much time, time we won’t get back, a waste of time in my opinion. There excellent when used properly (emergencies or a quick text or to pay a bill), but that’s not always the case. I look forward to your U tube videos and all the sewing you share and advice you give. Bring it on girl, your a great inspiration. Cheers from NL, Canada ❤.

I really enjoyed and needed this video. I'm supposed to write today but felt so dull about starting I've known I had depression for 10 years now but despite medication and my best efforts some days are unavoidably low it's just part of it but this video lifted me up. It is simple but I realize with depression often the simple things are what brings back balance. It isn't all horrible going through low phases makes feeling uplifted something I feel so greatful for and the discussion of this topic and your smile lifted me right up and I'm going to get back to my writing now thank you for these little videos they make my heart smile. Sidenote love the little flowers, your earrings (I'm inspired to make something like it one of these days) and also I loved the little clips of you and family at the end I hope you guys have a great week ahead and stay blessed.

Thank you so much for sharing this subject Alexandra 🙏💖 It's so very important to look after yourself and your mental wellbeing and I can relate to everything you say (apart from Instagram which I never had). But the subject is so important, to respect yourself, value yourself and love yourself. I often have a kind of mental haze and have difficulty organising my time and doing things that I know would benefit me. I watch a lot of RUclips sewing videos which I find very motivating but then very little comes of watching!!! Watching and then not doing is not soul food! Put down the phone! I think I will make a sign for every room in the house!
I look forward to hearing your progress and celebrate the forward steps with you. Good luck, and big hugs, Dannie 🤗💖

I have the same addiction I am slowly changing my viewing habits to learning how to play the violin, my faith, learning a new skill in sewing, calligraphy etc. I try to keep the trash videos to a minimum no shorts to much like the brain numbing tick Tok. Documentaries that just play whilst I clean or sew. Go outside get 10 mins of vitamin D. Make soap, hair products, etc. Tend to plants, plan an indoor herb garden, plan projects for lonely winter months. I also got a timer to time my phone time. A timer not on your phone but an outside timer the one I have is called a Time Timer. Don't give up ALL bad habits can be broken it just takes consistency and a no quit attitude .

I thought you meant what if RUclips is my addiction, and I was like, what I don’t think it is - or is if?! Haha!
I heard someone say that real change only comes one you’re tired of your own applesauce.
So if you’re genuinely like ok, I don’t want to spend so much time on RUclips, I think you will find a way out.
For me, quitting Instagram, I went cold turkey for the purpose of a detox, I know I will go back but I know it will be something controlled - haven’t figured that part out yet.
I also know people who only go on Insta Monday through Fridays but then not on the weekend.
