1:02 “Hey, what if…HEY!!!”
It’s like he messed up his line and made it funnier! This man is absolutely amazing!
"Don't jerk me around, Norm. It's a simple question."
A baby could answer it.
I love that he keeps calling him Norm.
I've been saying "You've made a wise choice, mah friend" for decades. Legendary.
Me too
Same
HEY what if.... HEY
Best part!
I howled
Hey. Si Robertson, Phil's brother, says that too.
Ask a horse what it wants for food. Hay.
Hilarious.
This was my favorite Harry Carey, "If you were starving, and you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself?"
My sister and I have been asking each other this question for 25 years. 😊
Mine too
I watched this live on TV when I was 15 years old, and it has lived rent free in my head for all these years. I still quote the "If you were a hotdog and you were starving" line to this day. Those were good times in my life.
Literally same!!!
@@UncouthBuzzard phuck yeah, me too! Good times with Will. Even funnier was the Jeff Goldblum skit..
"Think of all the possibilities Norm". Lmfao done....
Brad R I watched this live and completely lost it when he said that
i don't get it
MrAuditore96 Norm Macdonald was fired from Weekend Update just before this
Oh man, what was the issue?
Norm never followed marching orders on the show. He became unpopular amongst the cast, the producers. Some think he was fired because he constantly made jokes about OJ Simpson, a friend of the president of NBC.
This character is amazing. Even if it wasn't an impersonation it would be awesome.
Watching in 2023, this is 26 years old and I can still remember watching is live at the time it aired.... and it makes me feel old. Time sure does blow by!
Saw it live, can't forget any of it cos of the "hey norm!!!" Just floored me!!
"He called him Norm!" My dad said while laughing as we watched it live when it aired.
I love that Will Ferrell just leaned into the Norm mistake lol
That was a salute to Norm after having been replaced by Colin 😂
Wasn't a mistake lol... That's how Harry Caray was, he would say off the wall things and forget stuff.
No he didn’t
Mistake that was a shout out to Norm after being fired for making OJ jokes repeatedly after being told not to by a network executive and friend of OJ's
100%. He even says “Colin Quinn” at the end. Here’s another Colin/Norm tribute for ya:
"... and I'm not proud of it, but it help me out of many a jam."
I grew up listening to Harry Caray, both doing White Sox then Cubs coverage. This is awesome.
Me too south side
I never knew he announced for any other team than the Cubs.
@@campbecc Yeah, back in the 70s when I was a kid. If I remember correctly, the "Hey hey goodbye" thing started with one of the Sox back then. I think it was Chet Lemon maybe - they used to play it when he came on the field. May have been another player. Harry did the Sox back then. I sort of remember them being on Channel 44 back then as well.
@@campbecc Harry Caray spent the first 25 seasons of his broadcast career (1945-1969) as a Cardinals announcer (alongside Jack Buck).
Each time Will Ferrell did Harry Caray his hair got wilder and his glasses got bigger.
AYYYY!!! Lmfao. NeauX to HootZ... Baby Shark Sez DOODOODOODOO... 🤓🤑🙄
As Harry Caray aged...his hair got wilder and his glasses got bigger.
The sudden "Hey!" is the best.
Yup
Harry keeps calling Colin “Norm” 😂
“Hey Norm! Did you gain weight?”
Gee... none of us has ever noticed that in the past 22 years. Thanks for that insightful commentary.
Norm was the host until he got fired for cursing on air. Calling him norm was part of the joke.
anonymous bigshot oh I know trust me! Norm was probably the funniest of all Weekend Updates!
@@anonymousbigshot1775 norm got fired because he didn’t stop making OJ Simpson jokes, not because he cursed on air. It’s one of the most well covered chapters in SNL history. Charles Rocket and Jenny Slate got fired for cursing on air.
@@SKa-tt9nm Why did they trip over OJ jokes. They were clowning him in all their skits
1997 was, hands down, the most 90s year of that decade.
It released Titanic so legit
@@SandwichGlitch no love for Air Force One?
@@tylerbushong3452 well... What about Jurassic Park 2, MIB....... or the 90s incarnating movie Bean of 1997
1994
Those glasses,the head shake....LMFAO
They remind me of those shades he wears in those movies the house and Zoolander. But their glasses and not shades.
He's playing Harry Carey famous Chicago baseball announcer
That magnificent hair...
"HEY!" Lmao, too!
How anyone in SNL ever kept a straight face around Will Ferrell is waaaayy beyond me.
They didnt tho when the camera was off they were busting up laughing their ass off lol
The way he subtlety adds in that first Norm is phenomenal.
I remember this as a kid. Something today made me think of it, ...and here i am, dying of laughter! 😂🤣😂
I'm so old I actually remember all the things he mentioned when they actual happened.
You're not old, 97 was only a little while ago. sigasigsa
"Did anything else happen in 1997?" "No I covered everything"
Omg 24 years ago. I still pull these lines out and my mom nearly pees herself
My favorite impersonation!
Back in my day, 200 hot dogs could buy you a canned coke. jeesh
Well the strength of the Yen...
This was Colin's 1st night on Weekend Update after replacing Norm.
Wonder if Will calling him Norm was intentional
Ofc it was intentional. He deliberately called him the wrong name.
Of course it was intentional by Caray, but I wonder if Colin knew He was gonna do it... his reaction was perfect
@@JesseJ588 Ferrell did have a tendency of surprising people with improvisations or differently written jokes after dress rehearsal, and the addition of mistaking him with Norm might be one of those.
Colin's face looks like the line was either intentionally ad-libbed by Will, or a genuine mistake that Will just ended up rolling with.
I would wager it was a mistake that Ferrell leaned into like a pro
One of my all-time faves!!
Don’t ask why
man this bring back memories😢
Fryyyyyy
I remember watching this with my mom when it first aired and we were laughing so hard we missed half of it. Glad they finally put it on RUclips.
Chris Adams i know i always remembered the hot dog part still cracks me up
Ikr? 😂😂😂
I feel like that first "Norm" was an accident. A glorious, glorious accident
It wasn't. It truly, truly wasn't.
He was visibly upset about it too....watch his face and all after that
The first Norm was not an accident. Norm McDonald used to do the Weekend Update segment on SNL before Colin. So, Will talked with Colin before the show and told him he was going to call him Norm and Colin said sure no problem.
Miss Norm!! LOVE WILL!!
HEY, what if...HEY! 😂 perfect execution!
When he calls him Norm I died.
So did Norm :(
@@RedFiercare ???? I didn't even know he was sick
Wish we could go back to 1997.
This is one of my all time favs!
2:10 HEY! 😄😄😄😄😄
I love how he keeps calling Colin, "Norm" (Thinks he's Norm McDonald) And yeah, the "HEY!" part is FAS!!
Bob Veitch I didnt even catch it at first. 🤣🤣
Colin was an underrated lead on update.. the tone was different from most but classic with a modernity to it at the time. He could've got another year doing it to me.
"I would have come st you like s tornado made of arms and teeth and fingernails." HAHAHAHAHA
This is HILARIOUS!!
I think of this wherever I see brown mustard and relish…
I''m surprised the audience did not care for this that much...I found it hilarious
This sounds like me when l've been drinking.
I’ve never even looked into the real Harry Caray to see if this is a good impersonation or not…I always like to imagine that this IS the man himself.
If you were a hotdog and starving, would you eat yourself, I sure would, dip my self in brown mustard and relish, I would be delicious
Don't jerk me around Norm, it's a simple question.
a baby could answer that
Oh you made a wise choice my friend. If you'd said no, I would've bitten your ear off.
LMAO!!!
Probably polish myself off with a tall, cool Budweiser
funny, but scary that I remember all that stuff from 23 years ago so clearly.
The golden days of SNL.
Norm would probably have laughed. And given it back.
HEY NORM,,,,,, DID YOU GAIN WAIT? LMAO
Almost got it right, Bryan.
HEY
I m surprised Colin had time for this segment after being out all night getting 'Fluffy Whip' for the party!
Pure gold
“A baby could answer it” 😂😂
"Hey, what if....Hey!" -Harry Caray
"Its a simple question"
Welp this is now sent to my husband cause that's one of my husband's favorite skits to quote! 😂
“If you were a hotdog and you were starving, would you eat yourself?” 😂
that killed me..😂💀
I know I wud
Well,if you're starving you must have been deprived of food somehow,so I'd see what or who is depriveing me of food and rectify the situation
So no I would not eat myself even if I consist of Oscar Meyer hot dogs,Which I love
I never liked Weekend Update during any SNL season but remember watching this as a 10yr old and laughing
This is historic as i believe Norm had just been removed from weekend update. I miss him already :(
I really miss 1997
RIP Norm :(
I loved this time of SNL!
I don''t know where to start so I will just say Hey Whatf...hey whats gong on Hey Norm
2:29 is like an Oney plays hypothetical.
1:01 IM DYING .!!
2:53 some Talladega Nights foreshadowing?
Hey Norm!... 🤣🤣🤣👍
“It’s a simple question Norm, a baby could answer it.”
Anne sent me here.
Also, the Norm bit is so insanely funny.
This was funny asf i watch yall
What?
If you scroll down to hide the video, it really sounds like Harry, being a Cubs fan I've listened to him for years, each game he would say something off the wall like just like Will Ferrel, Harry was a Great announcer....Hey..Hey...I think it's gone......It is... !
i was a young kid in St. Louis and we were crushed when auggie busch fired harry.
If only Harry Caray gave such a rundown of 2020
Harry with the hard hitting questions that no one thinks about
My last brain cell at 2am
Hey Norm!!
Harry Carey's son Skip is dead? Nooooooooooo!!
That about sums up 1997
I'm Colin Quinn and that is the story I'm going with.
“If you would have said no I would have bitten your ear off”
Hey! What if..Hey! hahahahahah
Hey Norm😭
My favorite one! 😂😂😂
Why am I STILL crying in 2024?! 🤣🤣
Omg. He’s so funny.
i always thought he was saying colin quinn at 3:08 now i know its cubs win
I’m surprised that “Harry” didn’t mention Budweiser this time!
Harry asks the tough questions.
Anyone else just wanna go deep into the woods to put up some funny looking scarecrow in an open field so as to prevent birds from hanging around? Just an idea
The Bunny Man what...
Heck of a drug weed is, and I sure ain't complaining
I graduated in 1997………just throwing it out there.
Good things that happened in 1997:
+ i was born
Bad things:
+ i was born
I was 26... lol!
I was 9 in 1997
Jack Schneider you don't know what you have missed kid! 90's was gold!🙂
Tupac was killed ... I was 17
Eva, you sound like my son. You should hang out.
Harry Caray is the dark horse best SNL character there’s been...
Harry Caray died not long after this sketch aired. That soon put Will Ferrell's impression of him out of business, but it was damn funny while it lasted.
Less than two months later.
During SNL's heyday
Lemme guess... you're between the ages of 30 and 42?
Thank you, Game Grumps!
"Cubs win, Cubs win!!!"
Hay!!! Hayy.
Will Ferrell needs to do this for 2020
Think of all the possibilities norm
Norm like da fug
Colin was one of the best!
