    Regarding Ace calling Jimbei "boss": In Japanese he calls him "Oyabun" which is typically used by gangsters to refer to their head honcho. In the world of One Piece, pretty much everyone who knows JImbei calls him "Oyabun" or "Jimbei-oyabun" as a sign of respect as the crew he has has essentially a gangster hierarchy.

      Ahh that makes total sense

    • @ojisankusai
      @ojisankusai Год назад +20

      @@GavinReadsItAll It's a bit more complex than that, as "oyabun" translates into something akin to "parent", where their underlings are considered something akin to "children".
      Basically, it illustrates how Jimbei treats those under him, which is something you'll want to keep in mind for in the future.
      Interestingly enough, Shanks is _also_ referred to as "Shanks-oyabun".
      EDIT: Forgot to mention that this is why Shanks drinks from those oversized sakazuke cups, which are reserved for the "oyabun". They've got a specific name for 'em, which I can't remember off the top of my head, which illustrates this.

    This arc has one of the saddest panels in the entire series. In chapter 532 Buggy’s sad clown face after he excitedly asks Luffy if he remembers what he used to blow up towns in Orange Village, his special Buggy Ball, but Luffy just replies “No…”. Blood brothers doessn't mean brothers related by blood it means 2 people sworn to be brothers. A common ritual is that blood brothers will mix their blood in some way, you can sometimes see this in movies where characters will cut their hands and then grab each others hands to form a bond. But yeah the term specifically refers to people not related by blood

    Vegapunk (Franky found his childhood home in the cover story) has been mentioned before, he's the world's smartest scientist. He made the seastone hulled ships that let Koby and the Navy travel through the calm belt and he modified Kuma into a cyborg. Vegapunk mentions are one of those things in one piece that are easy to miss (and make re-reads all the better) but if you keep a look out, he'll get mentioned more in later arcs.

    There's just something about jailbreaks, so I would have loved this arc purely on that merit. The sheer chaos Luffy manages to cause always brings joy to me. It's such a snowball down the hill process every time. Luffy arrives, starts making friends and punching people, and by the end nobody has any control over the situation anymore. I always love seeing the formerly in-control antagonists confused as to how all this could happen just because Luffy is there.
    There was one chapter near the end of the arc that was named "The Lid to the Cauldron of Hell Opens". It's a reference to the Noboribetsu Jigoku Matsuri, a festival based on the legend that on the last Saturday and Sunday of August every year, the lid of the cauldron of hell opens and it becomes possible to escape. Really fitting for Impel Down and a lovely, hopeful use of the phrase.
    Also, while Hannyabal had a point in saying Luffy's actions would set terrible criminals free, there's another side to that coin. The World Government is obviously tyrannical and oppressive and has committed countless atrocities. They chased Robin for twenty years just because she can read Poneglyphs. So I think it's fair to say that probably there are many wrongully imprisoned people in Impel Down too and I hope some of them escaped.

If you know what I mean(still love it tho, I can watch people like Merphy any day) that’s also part of why I like anime reactions because you see the person’s thoughts every episode. But than again I also think manga formats are more consumable, because instead of 1 arc in 2-3 months it’s once a month, and whether it’s your style of review or another person’s style- anime or manga, I still enjoy the content alot.

    As readers we support Luffy but in this arc he acts selfishly. He wants to save his brother and in order to do so he frees countless criminals into the world.
    Hanyabal is an antagonist but he was acting in the best interest for the people, actually believing it was his duty to guard the world of this criminals. In the end it's up to us to decide.

      I second this. It makes Luffy's a grey character. The fact he released all these heinous criminals that will potentially kill and terrorise citizens make him multi dimension. • @sohailsadaqat6684
      @sohailsadaqat6684 Год назад +1

      I am sorry you are totally wrong, Luffy is not acting selfishly. Luffy always do what he thinks is right. I can guarantee you he would be up for killing Ace if he thinks Ace did something wrong enough to be punished. Example (Luffy was ready to kill Zoro in whiskey peak for killing "innocent" hosts, ppl think that was a mistake but that scene is litrally there to remind us that Luffy will kill/beat anyone who has done wrong) .
      Luffy is fighting for what he thinks is right, saving someone who has done nothing wrong. and he is simply fighting the system because a system who is ready to kill someone for no reason has no reason to have "prisoners" as how many of them are even wrong at this point. If you are trying to do right and then everyone who is stopping that from happening is wrong.
      Example Jimbie, Ivankov and many of his allies, are on the right side. Prsion which are torturing ppl for nothing is simply evil

    • @Sigart

      @@sohailsadaqat6684 Yes, the end to his actions is just, but the means to which he gets there is not. This is basically the age-old question of the trolley problem. Would you sacrifice many to save a few, who're important to you? And Luffy's answer seems to be unequivocally yes.

    • @33amra33
      @33amra33 Год назад +1

      @@Sigart I'm not saying that Luffy is evil. He is a moral character. He is good, but Luffy himself has said over and over again he only helps whoever he wants, it just happens (by design, of course) that Luffy is an excellent judge of character.
      My original comment was in reference to doflamingo's quote: "who ever wins is justice," we follow Luffy and we are sympathetic with his struggle; If the story was framed from the point of view of a Marine, we would see Luffy as a villain.
      All I'm saying is that the world in One Piece is not black and white, good vs evil. Morality is gray in one piece. This is what Luffy means when Luffy claims he's not a hero. He doesn't like obligations, he just wants to be free and selfishly do whatever he wants, and because he's Luffy (and he's awesome) what he wants is to help his friends (and eat meat).

    Translation and Fun Facts!
    Oh Come My Way and Newkama Land: Bon Clay's "catchphrase" that you may have noticed is "oh come my way" in the viz translation, but it's more accurately, the "okama way". Also Newkama Land is a play on this same term of "okama". "Okama" is a term that often refers to gay and transgender people, so its most accurate translation is probably "queer" as a reclaimed term for LGBTQ+ people (and I think it is the term used in the Crunchyroll translations). The main problem is that I believe "okama" is a derogatory term in Japanese, unfortunately. Maybe I'm overstepping my bounds by trying to defend Oda, but additional context to keep in mind is that this was made 15 years ago by a native of a country that is generally not as progressive on social issues like this. In addition, Ivankov and Bon Clay are very much positive representations, and it feels more like they use the word in a reclaimed way, much like "queer". People are also pretty uncomfortable with how characters like Sanji react to these characters. I will say, I think Oda's a case of "he's a little confused, but he's got the spirit". I think he's very accepting of transgendered people, but just hasn't become acquainted with what's considered acceptable. I also think he's made progress in this aspect, because just last year, he made a great point of a more grounded representation of a transgender character that I believe is highly respectful.
    Golden Lion Shiki is mentioned as the one person who has escaped Impel Down previously, and he's a very interesting character in One Piece, because while he exists in canon, it's likely we'll never see any more of him in the story than the promotional Chapter 0 that was released to promote a movie. The reason for this is because while the One Piece movies aren't canon, Shueisha and Toei, the publisher and animation company, seem to want to confuse audiences as much as possible into thinking the movie IS canon in order to drive up ticket sales. So what they do is they push Oda to turn a main character from the movie into a canon character, even if they're different between the movie and the canon series. That way, the events in the movie featuring Shiki aren't canon, but the character himself is. "Canon Shiki" only barely exists. He really hasn't made much of an impact on the canon One Piece world because his existance is really only a technicality. It makes things extremely confusing. Especially because they did this again for the newest One Piece movie, Film Red.
    Chapter 540: I wanted to bring this up because it's a VERY interesting detail that has spiraled into a big, memey, fan-theory in the community. In this chapter, Ivankov convinces Crocodile to help them because Iva knows Crocodile's "secret/weakness". At first glance, most people assume that its his weakness to water, but it seems to be more telling than that, because it doesn't feel like much of a secret, in particular to the group that's breaking him out. This leads fans to speculate if Crocodile has an even deeper secret that he refuses to allow Iva to say. This and the fact that Iva and Crocodile know each other at all, the theory that eventually arose is that Crocodile had asked Iva to turn him from a woman into a man years ago. More bizarrely, though, are the further theories that sprung from this... In particular, a very prevalent theory that ties to Luffy's mother being a mystery... Yeah, Croco-Mom is a very interesting theory...
    I think "blood brothers" is a weird term that Viz chose for the relationship between Buggy and Shanks. I think everyone assumes Buggy and Shanks must have a "brotherly" relationship since they both grew up on the same ship together. Though if you remember the flashback back in East Blue, Buggy does seem to genuinely hate Shanks

      To be fair the word Queer originally was also a derogatory term with the exact same connotation as Okama having a meaning akin to "strange" or "peculiar." Only after years of activism the word was pushed in a positive context. So it most definitely is the best translation.

    • @MOTHblank
      @MOTHblank Год назад

      Both Okama Way and Oh Come My Way are correct. It's an invitation to be Okama. Also, the word is about just as derogatory as queer, really depends on the context and who you're saying it to.

      I just want to say that Ivankov's character is based on a Dr. Frank N Furter *and* Oda's very close queer friend Imamura. So I think he does have a good understanding with gay people. I'm pretty sure they were drinking buddies or something. He even voiced Ivankov until Japan found out about his tattoos and he got banned from Voice acting. Truly disappointing. Yeah I just wanted to say that queers in Asian countries are vastly different from America's, especially Japan. Japan culture is the weirdest it can get. So we can't really say that your definition of what's acceptable is the same as their country's. I just don't like how you're implying that you're right and Oda's wrong.

It's a moniker from yakuza culture and mean sort of a respectable social higher-up, not necessarily direct superior. For the "boss" name, the term Ace uses for Jinbei in Japanese is "oyabun", which is a title used for yakuza leaders. That's kind of a theme with Jinbei.
    It's also a thing in his pirate epithet. The word "Kaikyo" would normally mean "strait" or "channel", but a kanji has been switched out (海侠 instead of 海峡). The kanji thus inserted (侠, kyou, "chivalry") is one that's usually found in an honorific used for high-ranking yakuza members (任侠, ninkyou). It's a pun that doesn't really translate. Translations people have made of this include "Knight of the Sea" and "Yakuza of the Sea" - the Finnish manga localization went with "Godfather of the Seas". Viz uses "First Son of the Sea", for reasons I'm not entirely sure of.

    What always stood out to me throughout the arc was that the jailers are juxtaposed as the bad guys while the prisoners are perceived as the good guys since we're viewing things from Luffys perspective.
    And Hannybal hits the nail on the head when he tells Luffy how his jail break has put extremely dangerous criminals back out into the world and put people at risk but Luffy doesn't care because he just wants to save Ace.
    It was a VERY humanizing moment and I'm glad that Oda pointed out the repercussions of a jail break even though it was so much fun lol.

    37:05 Yep, that's Pandaman. And there's no meaning behind it, he's, if I recall correctly, the first character Oda drew, so he likes to include it here and there. In the Japanese volumes you get dust covers, and Pandaman usually takes the place of a different character there (for example, in volume 21, you have the cover with Baroque Works standing side by side, from Crocodile to Miss Merry Christmas, and in the dust cover, you have Pandaman instead of Crocodile), and there's also a whole lore about him, with different characters, etc, that if I'm not mistaken happens in the inside of the dust covers. But within the chapters themselves, it's basically Oda playing Where's Wally. His first appearance was among the Don Krieg Pirates, and he's appeared in every arc except for Amazon Lily, for obvious reasons, as a man he'd get killed if he steps on the island. There you have Pandawoman, instead

This criminal in his attempt damaged large chunks of a genuinely important (albeit extremely cruel) facility, harming many important staff members in the process. I like that Magellan (pronounced with a J) is not a villain. He's just a man who is doing his job and he does it well for the most part.
    Edit: His name is based on Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who sailed for Spain in the 1500s. It was his expedition that proved that the world is round.

    Fun tidbit:
    - The treasure armband was handed to Luffy by Nami in Thriller Bark and that treasure belongs to Captain John who was one of the zombie generals that Moria resurrected.

    Impel Down is a great arc, even if it's mostly a build up to Marineford.
    I love Crocodile and love everytime they bring him back.
