Fun fact: there is actually one single moment in the entire series where luffy displays any sort of sexuality and that's in alabasta when they peak on the girls in the bathhouse. Oda was asked about this inconsistency and so he explained that luffy is indeed not attracted to anyone in that way and in that scene was just trying to fit in with the other guys

As an 18-year-long fan of One Piece, it absolutely gets better with each re-read, thanks to the way Oda keeps adding on to past moments again and again, such that stuff from earlier like East Blue become retroactively better. I'm not even sure I cried at any arc the first time through, but now I have at least one spot in each arc that makes me tear up. Like in this arc, Luffy's immediate decision to help Marguerite and the others still gets me, it might be my favorite moment from him ever. It's not deep or complex or anything, just pure unfiltered Luffy, and I gotta love that.

7:00 the paw print on the ground wasn't there to begin with, it's the result of the paw "bubble" Luffy was in (you can see it while he is flying) impacting the ground.
17:50 there were actually a couple of episodes where Luffy "reacted" to Nami's body, but Oda explained in a SBS that he was just acting as part of the gag and imitating Usop's reaction (in fact I believe even Chopper did the same thing).
22:10 the issue for the Kuja is that before Amazon Lily was naturally protected by the calm belt, but now the navy can sail relatively safely through there and therefore the warlord title is the only thing protecting them from the navy. I mean, they can certainly fight for themselves, but there is a difference between defending yourself and not even being attacked.
24:35 I agree that Luffy wouldn't "lust" on her anyway, but it's fair to mention that in that moment Luffy thought the beam was Foxy's noro noro beam and thus was "scared". So in either case, he wouldn't have turned to stone anyway.
29:40 not sure if you realised, but Hancock says she has the supreme king haki too. That tells you that while it's a rare power, Luffy is not unique or special.
31:40 I'm sorry, but you cannot skip the cover stories because part of the other crewmates' storylines will be showed there.
36:23 I like to think that Luffy "learned" to humble himself and ask for things if possible, instead of fighting his way out of everything, from Vivi in the Drum arc. So nice callback.
44:54 back in Nami's saga (ch. 69), Yosaku said that the reason Arlong was "released" in the east blue was Jinbe becoming a warlord, but we don't know the context at that point.
Very looking forward to next arc because it's absolute chaos and I love it.

I get why you have a different reaction about the Sabaody Arc than those who commented (including me). I think maybe it's because a lot of us watched the anime first before being manga readers. In the anime, the situation seemed so dire. The voice actors did an amazing job to relay the helplessness of all the straw hats. Zoro being frozen in fear (PTSD) from just seeing Kuma was more clearly shown in the anime, too.

It is the same in the manga if you pace yourself somewhat. Back then, when the chapters came out weekly, it was as horrifying. Especially since there was a multiple week long break afterwards iirc.
This is one of a few arcs where I generally recommend against binging it in one go as a new reader. One Piece is already really packed compared to other manga, and at some point it can get too fast for binging and Sabaody is one of those arcs imo.

On the name of Jimbei: his name was dropped before. You will probably learn this in the next arc. I could tell you where to look it up, if you want, but I don't think it's necessary at this point.
Btw, I think trying not to read the chapter names is not a bad idea. You can always go back and read them (and the cover story) immediately after the chapter. They can be spoilery sometimes.

Strap in folks, it's getting real. The Summit War is my absolute favourite saga and it definitely picks up from here, but Amazon Lily is in this great place of further elaborating on the Celestial Dragons and bringing the Ace conflict into the forefront really well.
I think there's something about the end of Sabaody that is really important that maybe didn't click, but even back in Water 7 there was this building anxiety about Luffy needing the strength to protect his loved ones in order not to lose them. He nearly lost his crew in Water 7 but was able to weather that storm with the crew intact, but Kuma separated the Straw Hats and Luffy was powerless to stop him. Adding that to learning of Ace's impending execution and now the uncertainty and tension is almost palpable. I'm REALLY looking forward to the next few videos, Gavin. Loving them as always.

  • @TuskyBaby
    @TuskyBaby Год назад +2

Luffy is adventure sexual. Also, Kuma's power is very simple. The paws on his hands can "repel anything" they touch. That concept of "repelling" is what gets stretched super far. The paw print that was under Luffy when he arrived at Amazon Lily is a crater, essentially. Luffy and crew were repelled to their own locations, and some were far enough that it took multiple days. There is no warp pad or whatever.
Glad you enjoyed this arc though. The next two are personal favorites of mine (and I'm sure many others), so these next few videos are about to be VERY juicy.

Rereading/ rewatching can make the biggest difference in understanding what's going on. There are so many details in even the shortest arc that it's easy to miss some important point while some other important point grabs your attention.
Right now I'm going through your manga responses. I still find it interesting to see this through new eyes. I started off with the anime; Sabaody hit me *hard* the first time because of the talents of the VAs. I came late enough that I could go on to the next episodes. I knew they would be okay. I just didn't know how. But it still hurt.
The next few arcs are hard to go through. I've watched several reactions to these next few arcs and they are just as devastating -or worse - now as they were the first time.
Re: Hancock's feelings for Luffy - during the years when kids will start having intense crushes and puppy love, Hancock and her sisters were enslaved by Celestial Dragons. Considering their ages at the time, and the devil fruit they made Hancock eat, we can see what _kind_ of enslavement is hinted at here. They're not working in the fields.
So even though she is much older than Luffy, He's the first person who liked her for her. Not for what she could do for him, not out of lust, just her.
There are far too many women in the real world who can relate to this to some extent. Nearly all of us have stories about some adult male making lewd comments or leering at our bodies, sometimes even before puberty.
No, I get Hancock. She makes sense to me.

Nice Chopper hat, seems so cozy!
2:50 The confusion about Sabaody on your part seems natural for me. On the first readthrough some people think that Luffy thought that Kuma isn't "teleporting" the strawhats, but actually killing them (so readers cry with Luffy like Merphy) while others think that Luffy knew about Kuma's real "harmless" power (so readers aren't too worried), and some people are just confused (so these readers need a while to feel the hurt). And you are one of the people who were only a bit confused
I don't think that Kuma's powers need a previously established paw print anywhere in order for a person to be sent there. Instead the paw print is created on impact when a person lands there, but I'm unsure now myself lol
25:00 my headcanon is that Luffy might be asexual/aromantic
31:29 this is a very good decision! Some fans argue that a chapter title isn't a spoiler if Oda put it there, but honestly, it is for me, so avoiding the titles may be for the best
44:53 Jinbe/Jimbei's name was only mentioned in Arlong Park
51:37 Luffy being alone is such a risk taken by Oda, but he was just able to show how lovable Luffy is!
    saving these emotional moments: 40:00 ; 41:55 ; 49:32
    Thank you for this video!

If you remember, Kumas attacks just happen to have that shape because of his paw pads. Think of Ursus Shock or the "Nothing Happened" bubble.

I mean, you're going to get an explanation for how haki works and what it is and how it's going to play out way before that of course (still, that explanation came like two years after the chapter when Luffy uses haki in front of Hancock), but IMO the concept hasn't fully been explained until now.

In Japan, the slang for testes is 'golden balls'. Handy that the joke translates so well.
Also now you realise that Luffy was smacking Enel around with his balls.

Your reaction to the end of Sabaody was not what I was expecting but I totally got why, when you know that there are several arcs after and have seen images of them together is easier to assume everyone is fine and in the next arc. Your journey is your own, and you're reactions are great even if they don't match the norm!

I've decided Gavin is Chopper. He's so innocent and naive. We're 500 chapters into One Piece, and he hears a story about some women being cursed by a Gorgon and now they have the power to turn people into stone. Instead of instantly hand-waving that away and saying "Nah, devil fruit powers," this poor soul believes them. That's why I'll never get tired of seeing first-time reactions to One Piece. If everyone thought like I did, the world would be great but also really boring.
And Gavin's wearing Chopper's hat. That totally slipped my mind when I wrote this. This confirms my theory.

I will say your reaction was unexpected, but perfectly understandable based on the context. To begin with, you know the story continues for 500 more chapters, at the very least, and you even know all the names of the upcoming arcs. Secondly, the way you read it, pausing after every chapter to recap your thoughts on it, breaks immersion. Had you read without pause the last 5-10 chapters of the arc, your reaction would've been completely different. Had you been reading this while it was coming out, with no certainty of what's to come, your reaction would've been completely different as well, even though you would've known they are not all going to die and end the story like that right there (thought that would've been some ballsy twist). What usually happens to people reading Sabaody comes from Luffy's visceral reaction (and even more so if you watch the anime, the voice acting and music are on a different level, and with every SH that got Kuma'd, they would cut up to an image a bubble reaching the max height and popping), which you were not immersed in. It's a mixture of the "holy fuck" of having the MC losing, seeing the crew literally disappear, and Luffy's pain for losing them

On their way to Arlong Park, Yosaku gives some context about Arlong, explaining that Jinbe is a fishman pirate captain and he and Arlong once were in the same crew. Arlong was allowed to do whatever in the East Blue after Jinbe became a warlord

Boa kicks kittens and sealion babies only because she does not want to show weakness in front of her subjects. She is putting up a facade and that really did not change even after she told Luffy everything about her. I mean it makes sense that she still kicks cute and innocent things.

6:50 Kuma's paws are basically indestructible and can push anything. He can block attacks by pushing on the sword/fist/whatever, he can push attributes out of people (like Luffy's pain), he can push air (kinda like how CP9 can moonwalk or finger bullet) which can create attacks, and he can push people to any location. When he pushes things he forms a paw shaped bubble, that's why the 'nothing happened' bubble was paw shaped and why Luffy landed in a paw shaped imprint (a bubble formed around him when Kuma pushed him and it dissipated on impact).
24:35 Luffy is an asexual icon and I love him so much
28:16 Haki is pronounced like Hockey and it means ambition in Japanese
44:44 translations differ slightly, but it's usually Jimbei (pronounced jim-bay) although sometimes it's spelt Jinbei or Jinbe (pronounced jin-bay)
50:15 Chapter 524 has one of my favorite SBS's, someone asks why we never see Luffy's internal monologue and Oda says that it's on purpose because Luffy will always act before he thinks.
I completely feel you on things feeling dire. After I finished Sabaody I read all 100 or so chapters of this Saga in like 2 days and I was literally vibrating with anxiety the entire time. I love the crew being split up (I mean, I hated it, but from a storytelling perspective y'know) because it represents a huge shift in the stakes of the story. In early one piece I was never worried about if Luffy was going to win I instead wondered how/when Luffy was going to win. But now we see that their are people like Kuma and Kizaru who Luffy doesn't stand a chance against (and given that all the warlords and an emperor of the sea are gathering there will probably be more people in that category), If Kuma or Kizaru or someone like that shows up I will be genuinely worried about Luffy's safety. In addition, his crew is gone, we always had the strawhat's behind Luffy. It was a safety net, we know that if one of them gets in too much trouble the other crew members can bail them out. But now the crew is split up and Luffy has no one to bail him out when he needs it.

      2 things:
Luffy is canonically not asexual, confirmed by Oda when he explained his reaction to Nami's happiness punch. He said the reaction was exaggerated (and I'll add dramatically exaggerated) because he was with Usopp, but it was his regardless.
Based on the kana the most correct spelling seems to be Jinbe, and a common mistake in its pronunciation among English speakers is adding that Y sound at the end. It's JIN-beh

4:32 Yes to your, "ban on buying One Piece merchandise" -- though I think you're giving yourself an easy out, setting the duration to "a little while."
My intended tone is warm/kind when sharing: I subscribed early into your One Piece uploads. I was not expecting to quickly develop concerns on the topic of fandom & identity.
Though my feelings are mine to manage, staying subscribed left me feeling like an enabler.
This said, I know no reason for your self-imposed ban is given in this video -- I don't need to know & I don't mean to presume. Knowing how much merch exists, learning of your ban... I let out an excited, "oh my goodness Gavin yes!"
