This video illustrates how to combine breath and expectoration (coughing) to help remove excess fluids from the lungs.
This video is the eight of the ten-part series of videos that outlines breath techniques for the prevention and recovery of COVID-19 and other respiratory and/or pulmonary conditions.
This breathing exercise went “viral” when Dr. Sarfaraz Munshi, working for Partnership of East London Cooperatives (PELC) at Queens Hospital, posted it on RUclips for a family member. Here, we have modified it to encourage breathing through the nose instead of through the mouth, and included contraindications. This breath technique may expand our lung capacity and the strength of our breathing muscles to aid in expectorating, when needed. It can be practiced seated or lying down if you need to on your left side or stomach. You will need two pillows for this exercise.
NOTE: Holding the breath is contraindicated for pregnancy and glaucoma. The early stages of Covid-19 include a dry cough - and this breathing technique would not be useful in such a case (according to the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Respiratory Care (ACPRC)). The ACPRC does not advise this technique for those with COPD, who should consult with a respiratory physiotherapist. Students with high or low blood pressure should be careful, as well as those taking medication or with a condition that might make them feel lightheaded or dizzy. If that happens during this practice or any of the exercises, calmly stop, and try an exercise that does not include holding the breath. You can always do more the next time you practice.

Hello, I suspect I may have some asthma. Can I use these techniques to clear water from the lungs and stop having to clear my throat so often? Thank you very much.

Thanks for reaching out! Since we are only yoga professionals, and not doctors, we can’t recommend anything for specific cases. If you get a chance to check in with a doctor, this might be a good thing to bring up. We hope you are safe and well!
