Grayscale Coloring - Background Options: Pastel Chalk, Pan Pastels, Eye Shadow, Pebbles Chalk

- In this video, I talk about different options that you can use when coloring backgrounds on grayscale coloring pages. I show what it looks like to use two very popular media choices on the background: colored pencil and markers. Then I talk about why I went searching for another technique to use. I show all the different products I purchased when I was developing my grayscale coloring books to use on backgrounds and what I liked and didn't like about each product. I highlight chalk pastels, pan pastels, eye shadow and Pebbles Chalk and color with each one on one of my grayscale images to show their effects.
I do what to mention that I was coloring very quickly to just simply show the effect on the coloring page. You can color more precisely with each option by going more slowly and choosing smaller applicators. I also wanted to mention that I encourage you to try all these products yourself and see what works best and is most fun for you! Media is a very personal choice and your preference may vary from mine. So please don't let my opinions stop you from trying or experimenting yourself. =)

I am glad I found your videos! I was searching for ways to color in backgrounds specifically for the gray scale, and this video has helped me immensely! Lol, I actually have the Coastal Scent 252 palette and have always looked at it as I used other shadows from my collection. This might finally help me make a dent in using it. Also, if you fall in love with any of the colors, you can buy them individually on the website. My granddaughter (11) and I are just getting started with "adult coloring" techniques, so this will be a bonus for us.
I’ve wanted these Pebbles chalks for a long time but have held off due to having other things I wanted to get first. These are so pretty though so probably won’t be able to hold out much longer. I like how they look on the greyscale. By the way, I really love your coloring books. You’re a beautifully talented artist.
I used the Pebbles in my scrapbooking for a long time and love that these can crossover to grayscale coloring--I just ordered your Vol 1 Grayscale--so excited to try it out. FYI the vaseline works really well with Prismacolor pencils too. Your videos are great thank you hugs, Julierose

I'm gonna cut up a cotton ball and make it into a small ball then use hemastats to use it for the background til I can get this kit.. your coloring books are AMAZING!🙏❤🤗👐

Hello :-) I'm so happy to find your channel! I'm excited to watch more of your videos! I enjoyed this one very much. And eyeshadow...wow, what a great idea! I've got all this expensive, beautiful eyeshadow, that does not look so beautiful on me...haha. But, I've just tried it out on paper and it is so wonderful! I just hope it doesn't change color over time. Being that it's on paper, and not skin; I think it just might last ;-) I'm pretty new to adult coloring, so it's a lot of trial and error now anyway.
I have some gorgeous shimmer shades that are way too much for my 49 year old eyes, but absolutely lovely on paper. And I found that with bronzer, and other dry makeups, I can make skin tones that are so much better than anything else I own :-) I have a ton of makeup, and I'm so excited to use it for art! I'm trying it with q-tips, and I also have these really pointed q-tips that I think would be so great for small spaces. I'm applying it much the way I would on skin, and pressing it into the paper, and it actually is sticking...no fallout! I put some over wax based colored pencil, and that may or may not cause it to oxidize or something...we'll see.
I'm having fun with it! Thank you so much for sharing your ideas! I'm on a super tight money diet, so if I can use some of this makeup, rather than purchasing more and more art supplies, well...that's fabulous ;-) I'm definitely not going to use it on everything I color. I've got a page I'm testing these ideas out on. And I am going to use the makeup on some of my coloring pages. So, I'll watch how they do over time. I'm going to try to remember to get back here to report on how it holds up.

personally, I use the pan pastels. There is a colorless blender that can be used underneath them when you want a more translucent coverage. Once you get used to them, you can master all kinds of tone on tone blending that gives the backgrounds real depth and interest. I get it, though that not everyone can afford them. I really enjoyed your video. I'll pop by again from time to time.

Wow never heard of the pebbles chalk before. Have used eye shadow then sprayed with hairspray before liked it too. But how cool having that tool to color with maybe even after you have used all of it you could use a small piece of cotton or cut a small piece of a makeup pad and use eyeshadows with it. Love that little t[l. Thank you for sharing this video with us otherwise I would never of known about them. Just found you too. Going to go look at your awesome coloring books now. i've just watched 2 of your videos, and i've already linked my friends to see it too. we colour as a hobby..a way of relaxing and destressing ..and i have to say your tips and tricks are so helpful. In this particular video, I think i love your pastels the most...but who would have thought to use eyeshadow? I think its brilliant ..thankyou so much !

I use the applicator from the pebbles to use on the chalks, eye shadow, etc. you can buy bags of the little white balls in each size in your crafting store, that way you don't run out of them, it relieves the dust from all the chalks but you can still use the clip applicator for all of them.
When coloring with eyeshadow do you need to spray it to protect the opposite page like you would have to with soft pastels? I’m brand new to adult coloring and don’t have soft pastels but have seen some videos on it, but none of the videos on eyeshadow have said
I just tried out watercolor for the background (with limited amount of water). Although the paper isn't very thick it worked quite well. Love your coloring books ❤
I'm so glad that you had a positive experience using watercolors on my books! I've tried it before too and really enjoyed it. Did you try to tape your paper down? It helps with the buckling a bit. :) You can also put it under some heavy books after you're done to flatten it out. Thank you for your kind words! :)
@@NikkiBurnette I didn't tape it down. I don't like to remove the pages from the book :-) So I used only a little amount of water and when the page was almost dry, I closed the book with paper above and underneath the page, placed some heavy books on it and on the next day it was completely flattened. I really like the greyscale, this is perfect for beginners to achieve really good results. I just ordered all of your greyscale books from amazon :-)

Hey :) Thank you for this interesting and informative video :) I have one question still...Could you use colored pencils over any of these methods? like putting down a base color with pastels or eye shadow and then add detail layers with colored pencils over it?
+Kreativ und Happy Hmm I'm not totally sure as I haven't experimented much with that. I would guess you could add colored pencils over the top, but it might rub off some of the pastels. I'm thinking the color would build up eventually though. =)

You should of tried the little tool from the Pebbles chalk with the eye shadow and the Soft pastel chalks. grin. Great video. Also what type of paper are you coloring on. Is it regular paper or like a vellum?
That's a great idea Mickey! Thank you. =) I will have to give that a try some time. This is the paper from my coloring book. It's quite a unique paper due to the printing process. It gives it a semi-smooth satin finish that I really enjoy coloring on. I find it quite pleasant for markers and pencils! =)

Just thought you'd like to know that chalks and soft pastels are different mediums. Chalks are colored with dyes (non-lightfast and generally kid-friendly) while soft pastels (which come in hard, medium, and soft) are made up of pigments (lightfast was depending on pigment and not kid-friendly as some pigments can be harmful to breathe/absorbed through the skin).

Pan pastels, of course, also come with small spongey applicators. I wonder why you didn't show those? The later materials you shared are fine, I'm guessing, for those who just want to apply them to coloring books. Professional artists, however, have to be concerned with the light-fast nature of media they use. The eye shadow you used, for example, might not be the same color a few years from now, if someone hangs it on the wall. The ones you used, in particular, also have the shiny "pearlescent" kind of nature that will not reproduce if you wanted to make prints of your finished work.
+Greg Edmonds Hi Greg! Thanks so much for your comment. =) Mine didn't come with a sponge applicator. I bought mine open stock from Dick Blick and decided not to purchase additional applicators, though I'm sure that would have helped! =) You definitely make some wonderful points about using materials for a hobby vs. using materials as a professional artist! In this particular video, I was trying to find a good medium for something very specific. I wanted to be able to recommend a cost effective, easy to find solution for coloring over grayscale backgrounds that are found frequently in my grayscale coloring books. They are the mottled/textured sort of background that are seen in the video here. So that was sort of my focus for this video. =)
How do you keep those backgrounds from smearing? After you apply any of them... do they continue to move around if you accidentally rub on them??
Hi Pam! I generally save the backgrounds until last and then I put my finished colorings in a sheet protector. I know a lot of people use fixative sprays or even hairspray, but I haven't experimented with those at all. =)

I use pan pastels allot and although expensive they are much better than shown here (no offence Nikki). You get four different shades to each colour and the one you choose was classed as a shade. They come as tint (pale), standard (hue), shade and extra dark. They last such a long time because they are opaque. It depends what you apply them with.
+sockwidowmaker Thanks for your reply! I definitely agree with you that pan pastels are a beautiful medium. I have seen such amazing work created with them and I hope to one day own more of them! But it was that opaque quality that made them not as good as the Pebbles Chalk for my particular purpose here. It covered up too much of that textured background, so I needed something a bit more transparent. I could see them really shine on grayscale perhaps over skin tone. I would imagine they would create flawless skin tones. =)
Could always get pastel pencils and use it to color the whole page
