  • In this video, I show how to create a light skin tone over a grayscale coloring page! Creating convincing skin tones can often take many different colors and be somewhat difficult. I really try to simplify the process and create a very nice light skin tone using only two different colors. I also give some tips and tricks to using petroleum jelly for a blending method. Thanks so much for watching and I really hope you enjoy it and find it useful! =)

    what colors would you use if you were using crayola? love your books,one of your grayscale beginner books has arrived,cannot wait to start

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  3 года назад +1

      Oh wow! Thank you so much for purchasing my book! I really hope that you enjoy it. :) I'm not sure what colors you would use in crayola. I know that there are some awesome conversion charts that you can find online that shows similar colors in different brands. I would maybe try to start googling something like that. I hope that helps.

    Hi Nikki thanks for this. I'm glad I finally got around to watching. Do you know if Lyra Rembrandt are open stock or is there a poly substitute. I love my polys but am looking at some extra pencils for missing colours.

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  7 лет назад

      Hi Dawn! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. =) Lyras are available open stock at Dick Blick www.dickblick.com/
      There are probably similar colors to substitute in some of your Polys, but in my opinion the pencils are quite different. The Lyras feel more creamy to me while the Polys are harder. I hope that helps! =)

    Great tip using the petroleum jelly, however, I noticed it gobbing up easily, so I have to wipe off the jelly often from my pencil. This happens using a tiny amount of the tip. I'm not using your book, so I was wondering if the book I am using just have different paper. Have you noticed differences if you use this technique on different books from your own.

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  8 лет назад

      Hi Mandy! Great question! I've only used it on two different types of paper: my book paper and regular cardstock. I found that they behaved pretty similarly. I do regularly wipe the excess off my pencil on a napkin when it gets goopy. =)

      @NikkiBurnette  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Susan! I can definitely relate! Pencils are very expensive. These two pencils that I use in the video are available open stock from www.dickblick.com. So you can try out this technique without having to purchase a full set. =)

    Does it smudge after?

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Yvette! I have had it smudge on me before, but I've discovered that using a piece of backing parchment paper or tracing paper to rest my hand on while I'm coloring solves that problem. =)

    Is the image above in your beginner or advanced book? I bought the beginner's book and the images are darker than I thought they would be. If the image above is from the beginner's book, i'm ready to color.

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  7 лет назад +1

      Hi Nancy! Yes, the image that I'm using in the video is a page taken right out of my Beginner's book. The images may seem dark at first, but once you start working them, you will see how the color still lays over the top. The darkness of the image provides a lot of depth underneath your coloring. You can always test first on the tester images as well if you wanted to experiment a bit before trying the larger image. =) I hope you have a lot of fun and thanks for buying my book!

    Do you get greasy stains on the back of the picture?

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  8 лет назад +1

      Sometimes I see a little bit of grease on the back side of the paper. I would probably only recommend it for single sided coloring pages. =)

    Hi , the pétroleum , is the same of , gamsol ? Sorry for English , i'm French ! I have your all book :)

    • @NikkiBurnette
      @NikkiBurnette  8 лет назад

      Petroleum Jelly is different than Gamsol. =) Maybe you know it as Vaseline? That is the name of a brand of Petroleum Jelly. It is more of a gel like consistency. I hope that helps!
