The flower called the Crown of glory bright orange with touches of yellow it’s a beautiful flower plant
I have done quite a few grayscale pictures with colored pencils. A couple things I enjoy about them is that you don't have the black outlines found in most adult coloring books, which in my opinion tend to diminish the quality of the finished work. I still do color in books just for the fun of it, but I like the professional results that grayscale copies provide. I make my own grayscale copies with my computer and printer, and also print out a color reference to ensure that I get the colors and tones correct, although sometimes I do change the color(s), for instance if I want a blue flower instead of a yellow one, etc. Anyway, thanks so much for sharing your talent and skill with us! Much appreciated and keep up your excellent work! :-)
The page with the stairway behind the open door with the strawberry looks like just before a summer thunder storm; those dusky purples and greys are terrific. I think the muted result on the colors gives it a dreamy kind of Giladriel-of-the-forest feel. Thanks for the video. helped me a lot. Cheers!
I'm glad, Julie! I never thought about it that way, but you're absolutely right!
Great tutorial! i also prefer using either isopropyl alcohol or fingernail polish remover with a brush because I really like how it smooths out the roughness of the colors and blends them very nicely. I have not tried using a paper stump, but I will in my next project. The one reason that I do not use a colorless blender is that it pushes down the fibers of the paper which causes the paper to loose its tooth, and I cannot then layer more colors after I have polished with the colorless blender. Chemical blenders not only melt the binder quite nicely, but it also allows me to continue layering on top of the blended areas, after they are dry. Thanks again for sharing!
The nail polish remover - is it acetone free?
The picture you said you forgot to do the background on...I think it looks amazing that way. Leaving it that hazy greyscale makes it look beautifully surreal!
The sky you find muddy gives intrerest to the picture 😍
Nice!
I would be really interested in seeing how you would do that background.
Thank you for making this video. I got over my fear and jumped in. I used your method and am having a blast coloring my first gray scale picture. 😀
Awesome, Jill! I'm glad to hear that! If you're not a member of our Facebook group, come over and join us so we can see the finished project!
Thanks for doing a grayscale tutorial. I'm a beginner, and I have a hard time deciding where shading should go, but I was intimidated by grayscale. . . now I'm inspired!
YAY! That's why I make these videos!
Get Woke. I'm new at coloring and I didn't understand how to color the Grayscale pictures. I'm going to learn I guess. Good luck.
Thanks, I learnt a lot.. I mostly take the pages out of the books and print them on my own good quality paperr
I just got my first grayscale book. I was so very excited when it came in the mail! I started my first page and it definitely wasn't as easy as I thought it wld be. This has helped me out So So Very Much. You made it make sense! Thank You lol!
I've started my second picture and I already see a vast improvement in my art!!!!
its a Crown imperial Fritillaria lily. i like the greyscales but i'm a beginner so it just takes a lot of practice, patience and booze! Unfortunately I'm practicing on books that cost a lot! I try quite a few different brands and find most of the time the cheaper pencils work better than the fancy name brands. I also have black widows and quite like them.
Beautiful job. Great presentation.
Love your videos and the way you point out that this is your way, not THE way! Thanks again Erin !
Love this video. I hope you are well, thank you for leaving these up. I have rewatched several.
I just started doing grayscale and I'm LOVING it!
It's a blast! I haven't done any true grayscale in ages. Maybe that'll be the next thing on my list.
Beautiful, very helpful!
I finally ordered some Gamsol and it should be here next week. After watching how this turned out, I am so happy I got some!
It really is a lifesaver. I don't use it often, but I'm happy it's there when I need it. The bottle lasts AGES, too.
Thank you so much! Grayscale intimidates me, but I might try it now. That flower, by the way, is a Fritillaria imperialis or Crown Imperial - it's usually orange, but sometimes yellow or red. Spectacular bulb to have in the garden.
Thanks so much, Marcella!
Never knew how to approach grayscale before. So much ink I didn't see how the color was going to be effective. Nice madness to your method!
I have two grey scale bit scared at it so I'm glad this come up.
Another great learning tutorial
Li love your art work.I have learned a lot.❤
Thanks for this tutorial, Erin! I've colored grayscale many times before with OK results, but I think I can get some better results after watching this - also, I am a fairly new subscriber and I have to tell you I am loving your channel, I am so happy when I see you have uploaded a vid :o)
Thank you! I really do appreciate it. Happy you're here! If you're not part of the Facebook group, feel free to come join us! I think we have one of the most open and active groups out there.
InstaBlaster...
Hi Erin. I'm a fairly new subbie. I really enjoy watching your videos! I've been learning so much from you! I'm a beginner at adult coloring. I just purchased the 150 count Prismacolor pencils. They overwhelmed me when I sat down to color. I watched your video regarding picking colors. I enjoy spending time with you while I color. I hope to achieve the same level of expertise as you some day! Practice practice practice! Lol Thanks so much for all you do for us out here in RUclips land! Hugs! 😀
I like this, I have the Blackwidow pencils too. I will have to try them on grayscale.
Thank you for doing this video.
You're welcome, Joetta! They were a bit of a pain on the Createspace paper, but the Gamsol helped a lot.
Simple Art for Adults Would vaseline work?
Brilliant thank you for sharing please post more gray-scale tutorials many thanks for the video
Hi Laura! I need to order a few more grayscale books that are on high-quality paper. Maybe I'll go do that today.
I love grayscale and I too tried the blender pencil 😳....never again!! Thank God it was just a small section I had to fix! Great video!
I've used a blender on grayscale before - but NOT on Createspace paper. I wish I could remember what it was. Maybe something I printed off? Thanks so much for watching!

Good video, good sense of humor. Many thanks.
Thank you so much 👍very good information
I just subscribed the other day and Im loving your videos, they are super informative!
Thanks so very much! I'm glad you're enjoying them!
Thank you very much, this tutorial helped me a lot.💛💛💛
That Create Space greyscale paper drives me friggin’ bonkers. LOL. When I can, I try to copy them into card stock although you CAN get the job done in the book. That gamsol is a lifesaver. I love it but yes, you have to be super careful with it.
I started out by printing my grayscale, but when I realized how much printer ink it takes and how expensive my ink truly is... I started trying to embrace the books themselves. I'm on a pretty tight budget for coloring, so I really have to be careful about where my money goes. A lot of times, it's a trade-off. Do I want Polychromos? If so, I've got to cut down on the printer ink cost. Haha. The Gamsol doesn't bother me at all, but I do worry about the dogs. I try to make it quick when I use it for that reason.
I was looking at grey scale coloring books and was wondering if they would be good for a beginner. I found them intriguing and so want to try one. I saw what you mean about the paper quality and used to think it was just my lack of coloring skills that cause it not to look a "creamy". I am so glad you did this video because now I can't wait to get my first grey scale coloring book. Right now I just have cheap coloring books, nothing of good quality so I will be looking for a better quality coloring book. Thanks Erin! Hugs, Brenda
Brenda Lawrence with grayscale, it's best to get smoothe paper, very little tooth. For example, Nikki Burnette and Jane Maday have grayscale books with great paper that accept all kinds of mediums. Nikki Burnette even has beginner and advanced grayscale books.
Thank you so much for this tutorial on grey scale. I know this was done 3 years ago- I'm wondering how you did the background? If you did a tutorial on that I sure would like to know. Thank you so much!! 💕
I think the background was drawn like that by the illustrator
Thank you for explaining this to me. Great demo.
I'm so glad your showing this I have the hardest time with grayscale I got some order less mineral spirits at Walmart do u think it's okay to use I got it in the paint section?thank u for doing this for us
Thank you so much for this video! I've always stayed away from grayscale because I didn't know what to do with it. The only page I did was with Prismacolor so that explains my results. I'm excited to give it another try now.
Remember that paper quality matters, too! Not just the pencils you're using. :)
I really like the way you teach. The lesson on grayscale was great. One of the main issues I have with grayscale is the background. Sometimes these grayscale books make it impossible to figure out what it is or where the separation is in the background. Just like the picture you did with the flowers the background has some kind of greenery or bushes and it is difficult to see how to color it in separations because everything is so tightly push together. Hope to see how you do the background, this is what stops me from finishing a grayscale picture.
I have use prismacolor pencils for 2 years now and when I use a colorless blender pencil it works very well for me maybe it's the paper of the book that's making the problem I also have odorless mineral spirits and I feel they all work I use my blender pencil it's more convenient than anything else and my pictures come out very nice I use prismacolor blender pencil
Hi Catrena! Thanks for commenting, but as I demonstrated in the video, with this type of paper in this book, the Prismacolor blender pencil isn't an option. It creates a gray mess. Odorless mineral spirits is the only real option on this particular paper. Otherwise, I would have used the colorless blender pencil. It's one of my favorite tools.
I used the Prismacolor blender but I hated the scratchy feel. Plus it hurt my wrists. The gamsol is so much easier on my hands and I like the feel of a brush on top of the colored pencil. Almost feels like I'm 'painting!'
I do like my Caran d'Ache blender for my Polychromos and Derwent Artist pencils though, it works beautifully and isn't as dry and scratchy as the prismacolor blender.
Hello Simple Art For Adults, are the coloring pages for the greyscale in beige or white? I can't hardly tell with my computer eyes. Thanks in advance, by the way, your work is gorgeous
This was so helpful to me, thank you for sharing. I have just got my first Grayscale book and am waiting for the 3 sets of Black Widows to arrive and i can't wait to get started. Your tutorial was so clear that even i could follow the instructions.
Personally I love my Marco Raffines. That said, I am working on a piece of sketchbook paper I pulled out of my sketchbook to print a grayscale off Pintrest. So there's that.
Awesome video as always!! I’ve been nervous about grayscale lol;)
I’m finishing a Santa page I started with Shelleen but I think I’m going to tackle your ornaments tutorial next and get to know my prismas better!! Thanks so much for your wonderful tutorials and the energy you put into doing them for us to learn and enjoy ❤️
Thanks Catherine! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Hi Erin.....I’m Michele and I was wondering what colors you use if you wanted to make the flowers white.
Lilly of the Vally? I love greyscale.
Really pretty Erin.
Thank you, Keni!
I love my cutting board sheets. You are welcome.
Watching you color this is still hard. What I see as dark you see as medium shades and some light shades I saw as medium lol. I have 1 greyscale I absolutely hate so I am going to practice in that 1 and I have used a blender and it makes a mess so I just ordered odorless mineral spirits.
The OMS really does help when the blender just makes a mess. :D
Hi Erin, thank you so much for demonstrating that in a video. My little gamsol bottle stands next to me and can't await to be used. :-D Your video is so helpful, you are such a nice person.
That's so sweet, Luthien. Thank you very much.
Have you heard on Alena Lazareva? I just got into coloring her newest release its called Victorian. Its greyscale... and ive never known how to color greyscale. So thank you. I wish you could do a tutorial on her book
I’m hoping for a new set with new colors to come out from black widow- I own both current sets and really like them!! I also still love my crayolas including the new “artist” set of 50. They work rather well in my Johanna planner.
There's supposed to be one (maybe two!) coming out soon... I'm anxiously awaiting them.
Would you show how to finish the background on the greyscale? I wasn’t sure if you were going to do a part 2 so thought I’d ask ! 🤓 Very informative once again, thanks.
Hi Janet! Doing a background in grayscale is just like doing the rest! Use your light, medium, and dark colors to lightly layer over the different values. :) I've done a few videos on my channel about how to do backgrounds, so if you're interested, there's one on how I used colored pencils (Prismacolor) to do a nice, blended background on a page in Maskara. It's all just light layering, really. Happy Coloring!
What are the best grayscale coloring books?
I found Dream World easy to colour😊
Thanks for this I have bennets dragon one and I did one and it was soooooo dark it looked horrible.
I just started grayscale. I'm not too sure about it, but I will try your color selection suggestions. I have a question. I was given a couple of pages from an artist and printed them onto regular paper, do you know if the Gamsol will destroy the print? Thank you 😊
Amazing video, what was the eraser?
Thanks!!!!!
Someone told me if u look in the back of your book, on one of the blank pages at the bottom that if it says it's from Kentucky then it's the roughest paper of create space, if u look at some of your other books they would be from other states!!! And have different textures!!!
Hi! I think the Prismacolor blender is pretty terrible (?) The Derwent one is the best I think but I try not to use blender pencils all that much 👍
Killer vid...
👍👍👍👍👍🖍🖍🖍🖍
Can you use Alcohol colorless blenders instead of orderless spirits with Prisma? I have asthma and COPD.
Yes! You sure can. Just be sure to clean off your alcohol blender after each color so you don't transfer colors.
I prefer OMS to alcohol, especially for the waxier pencils, but alcohol will work, too!
@@SimpleArtforAdults What is OMS?
Marie Laveee -OMS: Oderless Mineral Spirits
Omg I live there pencils amazing
Yes they are!
Called filltillea xx
U can't really use blender pencils on grayscale it will turn the darkest spots black
I think they are coral bells
Where can the black widow pencils be purchased from, besides Amazon ?
Jeff, I'm not sure they can be purchased outside of Amazon. I can look into it. I visited the company's Facebook page and the "shop now" link goes directly to Amazon, so I'm going to say it's probably Amazon exclusive. :(
Hi Jeff. I contacted the manufacturer and as I suspected, they are only available via Amazon right now.
Thank you so much.
I can't do any smells at all is there something I can sub for that
I've heard baby oil can do the same thing, but I've had bad luck with staining. There's a product called Zest-It sold in the UK that is supposed to smell like fresh citrus, if that's something you think you could tolerate. I'm not sure where you'd find it in the US because I've never purchased it. Amazon, maybe?
Simple Art for Adults thanks so much I’m going to look into that
When are you going to have the Giveaway where you are giving out the Black Widows or Scorpions that Albert sent. I am weighing the option of buying them now that I can't really afford to buy more supplies but at least they aren't expensive. Or...wait for the Giveaway and try my luck at winning some.
He hasn't sent me anything. He says he's going to give the winners all coupon codes to order them on Amazon, and we haven't worked the details out yet.
Oh, I see. Well maybe I'll go ahead and buy a set now and possibly win a set later. One can always hope but I can't always wait lol.
I completely understand! Patience is not MY virtue, either. haha.
Clivia
And be VERY careful using mineral spirits around birds!
Ah! Yes! Absolutely.
does the dollar tree matt change how the colors work?
Nope! If anything, it'll allow you to get more vibrancy if you're working on an otherwise "squishy" book. Does that make sense?
I'm not gonna lie. Grayscale scares the hell out of me. I know I know it's just a damn coloring book but it still intimidates me. But I really want to try. I have a 100 pack of crayolas. I bought them for my grandson. Lol
You can do it. I have faith! Just remember to look at it objectively and put the colors where they belong. Once you do the first one, you won't want to stop!
Apologies. I’m half asleep. It isn’t Clivia, it is Fritillaria. 😏
I'm guessing that's the name of the flower? Thank you SO much!
I will also give intricate a hard pass
There are times when I enjoy intricate things... I color them with gel pens or something. Most of the time, I like a good mix of intricate and open space.
