    Thank you for talking about the reality of "budget friendly" options, so many people think that cheaper in the beginning is better rather than SAVING up a little longer for the more cost effective in the long term. (for those who use the supplies regularly anyway)

    I couldn’t agree more with you about the prismacolor pencils! I used crayola pencils I took from my son when I first began coloring. Then one magical day I was at Walmart (never thought I’d say that 🙄) and found for $15 the 24 pack of prismacolor premier pencils and I went for it. I have tried using my different brands of budget pencils since then but find I am not satisfied because I have to push so hard for rich color. I feel like I use less of my prism as because I use such little pressure. I then went to Hobby Lobby and started adding to my collection of colors. Finally I am proud to say I received the 150 prismacolor set for my birthday this year! However I found with just a few prismacolor pencils I could do much more then with my wide range of budget color pencils. Thank you so much! I enjoy your videos and learn a lot from you!

      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад +1

      It's wonderful, isn't it, Heather? I almost gave up coloring altogether until I discovered my 24-pack of Prismacolor! Haha. I saved and bought the 150 myself, but I use them more than any other pencil - and I have a LOT. I'll eventually get around to doing more videos with those, too, but I'd rather focus on my pride and joy first.

    I agree with you on the point of budget pencils v Prismas and the cost comparison. Like you say we have our favourite colours and they tend to get used more frequently. You can always buy the Prismas open stock which is cheaper in the long run. Great tutorial, thanks for the effort.

    Hey Erin. 😊 I got my Prismas a couple years ago although my Polychromos are my favorites. I haven’t had a bit of trouble with my Prismas but I’m very careful with them. I totally agree on the open stock availability. I’ve got a TON of colored pencils from very budget friendly brands all the way up to very high end ones. It really makes it nice when you have that open stock option. It beats having to go buy another set to get just the one or two pencils you need. Anyway, I look forward to seeing the rest of your Prismacolor tutorial. 😊

      I'm in the same boat! I have several brands from Rose-Art all the way up to some of the Polychromos and a couple Luminance (just to try them... to be fair, I was expecting more out of them). Buying pencils that don't come in open stock is hard these days! I panic when I can't replace my favorite colors.

      Simple Art for Adults I have handful of Rose Art that belonged to my daughter when she was in grade school. A lot of them are stubs. I cherish them because they were hers (I lost her in an accident when she was 12) and think of her when I use them. They have names on them and I like that. I had a 55% off coupon for 2 days at AC Moore so I went to get the set of 50 Rose Art ( I HATE CRAZY ART) pencils which would have been $4.50. BUT - somebody - not me I promise - had spilled a box of them all over the place. The OCD in me started to gather them up and in doing so I noticed no names. Rose Art wasn't even printed on them. I passed - I need at least a number if not a name to keep track of what I am using on a page I have to come back to. I like my Marco Raffine's a lot and they are numbered which works. And thanks for letting me ramble on ;-). This (as always) was a great video!

    Wow you were 15 minutes in before your first tip, I almost gave up but I am glad I stayed as the pencil sharpener in the right hand is definitely something I am going to try, I am still trying lots of different brands looking for a favourite (even found papermate colored pencils) but the argument for buying sets that you can get open stock for is certainly worth considering.

    Erin, I can't thank you enough for doing this type of video. I have been trying various types of coloring mediums and started with the 48 set of Prismacolors. I agree with all that you have to say about PC's. I own 4 sets of the 150 and have about another 100 open stock. I also have got the 120 set of Faber Castell Poly Chromos. I find myself going back to the PC's more often than I thought I would. I also like my 72 set of Derwent Colorsoft. But the most unique set of pencils I own are the Tombow Irojiten 90 set. These pencils have the most unique shades and tones and tints I have ever seen, which is why I bought a second set. I am a very creative person and I have came up with several ideas on how to blend and use things found around the house for use with my colored pencils. For instance, regular Chapstick works great to blend with. I will try and make a tool before I go out and buy one. I made a really sturdy lightbox out of things I had around the house and from my computer shop. YUP... I have a colored pencil addiction..... I really like your channel. You give great advice.

      That's an interesting tip, but I won't use any solvent other than odorless mineral spirits on my work. I've ruined images with oil and grease stains from other things, and it's just as easy for me to get a cheap bottle of OMS and use it. :)

    I bought my Prismas a few at a time at Michael's when they were buy one get one 1/2 off. I wanted to make sure the core was centered in the barrel. I have a little trouble with sharpening but nothing major. The price has come WAY down on the sets since I got mine so maybe I will spring for them in a few months. I want to see what I get for Christmas first. But I really do love how easily the color lays down. :-)

    Thank you for explaining the budget pencil thing. It makes perfect sense. Your logic is spot on and because of this video I have decided to subscribe to your channel and start watching your other videos. It makes so much commonsense unfortunately common sense is no longer common. However you still got it. Thank you so very much for enlightening me now I am going to stop buying cheap pencilsAnd spend a little bit more money upfront that way I don’t have more pencils that I know what to do with. Currently I am sitting on two shoeboxes full of colored pencils that I may never use thanks budget companies for spending my money unwisely. And thank you once more for enlightening me. I hope you have yourself a fantastic rest of your day your newest subscriber.

      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад

      I'm so glad to hear that! You're right, though - all those budget pencils end up costing more in the end, so it just makes sense to buy some pencils you can replace as you need to replace them. Don't get me wrong - I bought a replacement set of 72 anyway because they were on sale for $20 and I know I'll use them. Haha.

    I love my Prisma’s. I only buy sets that offer open stock. I also have the full sets of FC polychromos, Derwent Colorsoft, and the Blick Studio colored pencils...... I found for me, that the electric Wescott iPoint Orbit pencil sharpener has solved my broken lead problem. Now I’m not wasting anymore of the lead from the point breaking .

    • @SimpleArtforAdults
      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад

      For some people, those sharpeners seem to work better. That's just not the case for me. I went through three electric sharpeners before I gave up on them. The cores of the pencils melt into the blades and it's virtually impossible to keep them clean. I think I just had bad luck!

    Thank you so much for such an informative video! I'm only half way through, but wanted to say that I own only 1 Prismacolor because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I ordered it from Ebay and was extremely disappointed because the point kept breaking. But now I know why. It must either be from a bad batch or have been damaged internally during transit. I had made up my mind to stick to my trusty Crayolas (I know they're not as soft, but worth the price) but at least I know now, how to sharpen my pencils and that Prismacolors are worth giving another try at some stage. I'm very grateful for your excellent tutorial.
    I've just watched the last half and I'm convinced that you are right - it is worth getting the Prismacolors and learning how to use them / look after them properly. Thanks again!

    I like Prismacolor pencils best and they blend well on smooth Bristol paper. I don't like the coloring book paper, but you do beautiful work in the coloring books. Just ignore negative comments, you are a peach. 🙂 tfs! I have had zero issues with breakage with my pencils since i bought electric and battery operated sharpeners. Thats a great price!

    • @SimpleArtforAdults
      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад +1

      I've switched to a T'Gaal sharpener and I haven't had a single pencil break since I did. I just use the first setting and sharpen it like a golf pencil and it does a great job! I sharpen more frequently, but it's worth it, and I still get a fine enough point for details. Coloring book paper can be tough to work with sometimes, but some of it is an absolute dream! I've just gotten some Fabriano hot pressed watercolor paper and they absolutely glide over it. They blend together just like butter on that paper and it's so much fun!

I bought these years ago at a Hobby Lobby 40% coupon and JUST figured out how to keep the darn things from breaking (thank you internet)(thank you artnfly) and now I'm hooked on your videos and thought to ask if you knew if there's any difference.... Your videos are super helpful and I appreciate them. UPDATE NOW I understand!!!! nevermind!

    Great idea to do these videos for us 😊
    What about the page with the two goldfish and the lotus flowers on top of the pond? That one is really cute!!
    I have prisma from all generations including the ancient eagle turquoise and they are totally different now but I still like my modern 150 set!! They are easy on damaged hands for sure. I’m not as good with the newer softer Newells as I’d like to be so I’m looking forward to watching your ideas and tips on using them!! Thanks ❤️

    Some background information on Prismacolor Premier colored pencil, these pencils were designed and made in Canada. These pencils are wax, not oil pencils. The original name was Berol Prismacolor pencils they were top quality pencils without the problems that they have today. These pencils were sold to the U.S. so now they are a U.S. pencil but they did not make them first. If you want the Canadian Berol Prismacolor pencils there are sellers that are selling used on eBay.ca. They have both English and French as in Canada both are the official languages in Canada.

    Hey, I am about to order my first set. But I can't decide between the 72 count or the 130 count. Is there really that many colors that are missing? Do you think that the 72 count is good for starting out

    • @SimpleArtforAdults
      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад +3

      I think so, yes, but you have to think about how you usually do things. If you get the 72 and you really love them, are you willing to wait to get the rest, or will you need to have them right away?
      I think if you've never tried them, if you have a Blick or Hobby Lobby or something nearby, it might be worth your while to pick up a couple open stock pencils and give them a try. Then, you can make a better decision about how big you want your set to be. I jumped from 24 straight to 150 when I got the hang of them.
      There are MANY colors in the 132 that aren't in the 72, so I'd go with a set as big as your budget will allow - after you know you'll like them, though.

    • @SimpleArtforAdults
      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад +2

      If you like using pencils, I would skip over the Scholars and put that money toward the artist-grade Premier. Otherwise, the Scholar line is also soft and creamy, but it's harder than the Premier line and not quite as pigmented. The colors seem to be the same with the exception of Violet. The Scholar violet is very light while the Premier violet is much darker.
      I don't know if I'll have time for a video review, but I'll try!

    I just bought a bundle package on Amazon it came with a hardcover Christmas color book, 48 prisms color premium set, prisma color sharpner, a scholar eraser which is a very nice one, a set of prismacolor less blender a pack of 2 all for 39.99. I can't wait to receive it. Does anyone know what happened to Erin? Also since I got the 48 set when I'm ready can I buy a set with the rest of them or do I have to start all over? I hope not. I noticed something on amazon.FR : the prismacolor's seller is named "Sanford"... but you said that Sanford isn't making these pencils anymore... is it false "advertisment" or something specific to amazon.fr ? Or is there still some old prisma on a.fr ?

    • @SimpleArtforAdults
      @SimpleArtforAdults  6 лет назад +1

      It could be old Prismacolors or it could just be that the seller isn't aware that the manufacturer changed hands. I've seen it in the US too. Just check to see what the pencils look like. If they don't say Sanford on them, then they're made by Newell-Rubbermaid.

    When I lay my Prismacolor colour down it never looks like the you tube video almost waxy watercolour mine always looks grainy. Do you know why that might be? Sometimes my pencils lay down differently when I hear them.

    • @silentb2084
      @silentb2084 2 года назад

      It could be your pressure. It’s easy to mash down the tooth of the paper and end up with waxy blobs! I’m very new to coloring, and I’ve found if I do very light strokes in a single direction on the first layer, then keep laying down layer after layer with that same light stroke, I can get the wax to build gradually enough that it fills in the tooth of the paper.

      I know areas of Canada that have VAT or import tax costs which get passed on to you. Not sure if you are looking at Canadian dollars or US with your purchases, but exchange rate could play a role too. I agree though that the higher costs for things which is only a different location they are going to would cost more.

      +Whitney Hensley $35 isn't a bad price. They fluctuate so it's hard to know when to buy... a lot like the stock market. Haha. Blender pencils are very affordable on Amazon! Maybe add one the next time you order something from there? Search though... I found 4/$5 on sale once and I still have 3. I don't use them much in coloring books, but I do sometimes.

    Maybe because I’m left handed that manual sharpeners don’t work well for me. At least 5% of the time I get wood incorporated into the point abs I have to trim it back with scissors and start again. I lost half of a goldenrod Verithin but less of the other five with manipulation. I haven’t found a best sharpening technique yet. I might go with a hand crank type, as those have traditionally been best. We might even have an *old school* sharpener around and even an electric sharpener. I probably won’t use the latter!

      I explained this in the video but maybe I didn't do a very good job. I use these pencils all the time, and I buy them one at a time as I use up a color. They're $1-$2 individually, but I got my 72-set for only $24, which is crazy cheap. I saved myself a TON of money by going ahead and getting it.
      Colored pencils don't last forever. That's especially true of Prismacolor. I go through some colors pretty quickly.
