I wish there was a Grayscale, coloring work sheet. That shows is, okay this is Step 1. 2. and 3. Guiding us, to light and dark coloring....
LOVED this!!! Great reminder about being patient (I'm a knitter too!) It is so helpful to watch you coloring her little face.
One tip when coloring greyscale pages. If you create your own with images. Your own or from online. Do not use a laser printer. If you have any darker portion you have a greater portion of toner overlayed on the paper. Any color pencil you lay down is being layed down over the toner.

Why did you use the second color over the darkest section please?
I downloaded pictures from your Etsy store but they are still two dark for me to color.

Hi Gaile, I often include a lighter and darker version of the images in the sets. I'm sorry they have not worked for you. If there is one set you purchased that you'd like lighter, I can custom lighten it and email you a link .Because my paintings have no outlines, they tend to look pretty faded if they are too light. -Email me and let me know--ruth@ruthsanderson.com

Thank you for these great explanations. For grayscale coloring, I was wondering if I should always start with the lightest colors? In fact it seemed to me that it was rather advisable to start not the darkest and going towards the lightest?
And should we start with the background or color it at the end?

Frederique I like to start with the lightest colors because I often layer them overlapping or sometimes covering the grays first and I feel the darker color goes on smoother. Depends on each object. But some people start with a dark. When I do a darker object sometimes I ground the darkest areas first. And some people start with light, add the darkest, then blend together with the mid tone. On grayscale if an object has white areas I usually don’t make that a dark object, I stick with the tonal quality of the grayscale and add a mid level bright color over the shadow. The picture will always be a bit darker than the original, of course. In books with light grayscale You do need to push the darks, but I always go back over dark areas with bright colors. A basic art principle is background first, yes. That way you are adding the figure in the foreground last and the edges are on top of the background. Like hair for instance. It really depends, sometimes it does not really matter. Sorry if this confuses you. Experiment, and see what works for you!

What is the best paper to print this on?
Drawing paper is always good, it has a bit of a "tooth." An inexpensive option is Vellum Card Stock. I had to search for a long time to find one on Amazon with 250 sheets. I've posted the link on my Coloring Books page on my website--- goldenwoodstudio.com/coloring-books/
