    I enjoyed this a lot, particularly your determination not to just give up and not to just present a "one, two, three, voilà! see how effortlessly perfect this is" creation.
    You may have already discovered this but I think you'd find Pan Pastels much more fun if you play some with the colourless blender. Mixing with white makes them look chalky and alters the colour, mixing with colourless blender makes them more translucent on the page and does not alter the colour. You can also get much smoother gradients and mixing by laying down your colours and then using the colourless blender.
    Also, there is a palette knife that is a triangular shape that would be a lot easier than the little make-up applicator type applicators you were using. The point of the triangular knife is pretty pointy and works fairly well for details.

    Thank you for showing us this! As you say, it’s an experiment and what a wonderful experiment it is. Stretching your art supplies to do different things and making your skills work to your advantage was so much fun to watch and proved that we should maybe step outside our comfort zones as well. Thank you Gem!!💖

    Being a broke artist way back in the 70's I used to spend my allowance on every color of Eye shadow. Took them to school to color with. The art teacher, yup art teacher asked me if I ever heard of powdered colors for making art. ( never heard of pan pastels before that.) Just told her I liked the colors better than crayons.
    I did own a lot of tiny paint brushes
    That I used with them😊

      I love coloring with eyeshadow. When I was in school I use to do these half faces where I would draw the lips, part of the nose and a single eye (cause you know... the other eye never matches so why ruin a perfectly good picture) and color it in with my mom's makeup.

    Pan Pastels are for blocking in base layers, and for backgrounds. They're definitely not for details.

    How refreshing to watch someone that is like oneself that doesn't get it quite right at times. Well done you on carrying on with the other supplies and getting a good result... I would of given up.😆

    I hate to see a disaster if you think this is bad. Gem it’s beautiful I don’t mind it not being totally blended in. It really is a pretty page and you made it come alive.
    Keep safe and keep up the beautiful work Gem. I really enjoyed you playing with the pastels again. And shhhh I’ve got a nice stash building up of them and I’ve only been doing backgrounds and playing with them to see how they work. All because of watching you play with them the very first time. That magenta colour was beautiful. Cheers cherieK 🦋🌈🇦🇺 ( p:s we’re all healthy and safe here in my house).

      I wanted to post an update to anyone who might be following.
      It’s been a rough few day’s around here. Last night we made the very hard but right decision to put our 15yr old German Shepherd to sleep and needless to say. I’m feeling it pretty hard. I’ve been with her everyday of her life since we brought her home and she’s been an even bigger part of mine so I lost almost my right hand . When I hand my spinal chord stimulator surgery. I trained her to pick things up for me because I was alone all day and I couldn’t bend over for two months . The leads needed to heal in place properly. She was my right hand. Waking up today and seeing all of her stuff and her not being here wasn’t easy. I didn’t realize it at the time but, I think she was my muse. Or at least it feels that way now. I know it will get easier in time. Right now it’s just tough but we did what was best for her and I know that. For all the joy she gave we owed her that much.

    Pan pastels are pure pigment and mix well into other shades , you can mix them on a palette or paper

    I think the result still looks pretty. And I think for art experiments like this Captain Jack Sparrow's quote "It's not the destination so much as it is the journey" really does work. You always learn something from experimenting, but some fear to experiment :)

    This came out great! I do think that the Hannah Karlzon books have too smooth a paper for pastels. In fact, I was going to try the same in a Klara Markova book, but was concerned about the lack of tooth on the paper. It is fun to watch you break out of your comfort zone with these bright colors...I'm impressed!
    I have an eraser from AFMAT that comes with 2 sizes for the erasers. I keep my OHUHU eraser with the regular eraser & the new AFMAT eraser filled with the tiny one...the tiny eraser is extremely helpful. I found it on Amazon.com.
    Thanks Gem, it's always a pleasure.
    Hope Mama Gem is doing well

      Someone else had suggested paint brushes, how is the laydown? I’m not sure I’d be all that interested in using pastels in this manner in my colouring pages, but it would be a handy thing to know all the same 😊

    Gem, watch some videos by Xrissart. She uses make-up brushes for her details. I bought some, tried them and with a little practice,I can get some fairly small detail. Regardless I love watching your journey with PP.

    Yeah, this would have been sad without the POSCAs. I mean, It's not terrible but just not as interesting or has as much depth as your usual coloring which tends to have lovely shading on it. I do think that pan pastels looks lovely as backgrounds.

  • @mjpete27
    @mjpete27 4 года назад

    I am learning about soft pastels and coming from a traditional watercolor background it is nice that with pastels you can add lighter colors on top of darker colors! I have seen artists who are more experienced than me use fixative for adding tooth to papers that need more or when pastels fill the tooth and more layers are needed! I'll bet you could spray the coloring page before you even start to create tooth for the pastels to stick to as well. (Did you do that? I did not see it but you kinda talked about it?) I bet your pencils would stick better if you spray some fixative after you put down a layer of Pan Pastels. I think the Posca pens is a mistake it will not stay long term and the pastels will layer if you use the workable fixative spray. I think the Posca's might stick if you use a fixative on top of the pastels. You are certainly breaking out and I commend you on your bravery! Wonderful video and Kudos to you for the experimentation!

    Every time I touch my page my fingertips leave a light layer of oil ( even if I have just washed and dried them) and it have pastel fingerprints on the page when I put my pastels down. Anyone else have this problem. I have tried to not touch areas I am putting chalk on , I have tried to erase them and it helps a little. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    I don't think the pan pastels look fun to use, maybe if I tried them I would feel different. Love your videos. I'm from Scotland as well, it's good to see another Scot in the colouring community on RUclips. There's someone else and her name is escaping me at the minute lol, but she's really good as well. Are pan pastels the same as soft pastels? Hope your having a good day 😁

      Hi JoJo, there are quite a few in our T-ART-an army! I'd say that PanPastels are creamier and less chalky than normal soft pastels, it's why I prefer them.

    Wow your so good ,I do admire your work.iv never used pastels so I'd like to ask , would paint brushes work for doing this work ?

    • @TheColourCave
      @TheColourCave  4 года назад +1

      Brushes would work, but the pigment laydown would be pretty uneven I would guess. Building up layers would help, but that is very dependent on the paper you are using. Most colouring books aren't really designed to take layers and layers of pastel.

    For really fine/small sponge applicators go to Ali Express and type in either sponge applicators or makeup applicators and you will have pages and pages of choices. I will send you a picture of some tiny ones I got.
