  • This process can be used on any laser lens. You may try this as many times as you want. If this doesn't work after several tries then the laser is dead and you will need to purchase a new laser. The 91% rubbing alcohol can remove dirt and grime which can inhibit the laser to read. Letting the alcohol sit on the lens for 10 to 15 seconds will get rid of scratches.
    Any questions you may have are welcome.

      Right on! It doesn’t work for every laser but I think it’s always worth a try before you buy a new laser, if you can even find one. Thank you for the comment that means a lot to me.

    Great video! Still helped me in 2022. Unfortunately for me it was in fact a bad disc. Luckily, my used game stores have a 30 day return and I was able to swap it out until I got an og copy of Halo 2 that works 👍

    I had zero capacitor leakage and still didn’t work 😔

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  3 месяца назад +1

      With electrolytic capacitors, just because they don’t show leakage doesn’t mean they’re bad. If we’re talking about the battery cap, some models don’t have it. If you don’t see any leakage then you probably have a later model which is the better model to have.
      Unfortunately with lasers, not every one will come back with a cleaning. Most are just dead.
      You will have to replace the whole disc drive.

    If everything looks clean and functional but still doesn't work, what could be the problem? Laser moves and lights up, disc spins, game works for a few seconds then a disc read error.

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  2 года назад +2

      One thing I didn’t cover is: some disc drives (there’s four or 5 different kinds, all compatible though) have potentiometers on the laser. You can turn up or down the voltage power to the laser. Although some laser pots have lock tight or some adhesive put on it, I have found and they are not adjustable.
      If you find a “working” Xbox OG disc drive for sale on eBay, it don’t matter if it’s a Thompson drive or Phillips or whatever. They all will be compatible with your unit. That’s what a lot of us are being forced to do as nobody make replacement lasers for them.

    • @gibsonfan159
      @gibsonfan159 2 года назад

      @@RetroFix I also tried the pot adjustment. First at max 3.11 to no avail, then down to 1.03 which allowed some games to actually start playing but again froze. I'm beginning to think the hard drive isn't working properly.

      @@gibsonfan159 oof... could be HDD or even both...
      Man. When it's the HDD the only way to go it a mod. Thats Out of my territory but ComputerBooter does them from time to time on his channel. Even has a store location and web site, you can mail your Xbox in and have it moded.
      I'm 90% positive he offers that service. He definitely makes the specialized chips that (once installed) allow you to put in a different hard drive and do all the cool things. No disc drive needed.

      It's preferred as it's stronger and leaves less residue but I'll tell ya, your laser likely is no good if a cleaning didn't work. Some lasers have an adjustment potentiometer but even adjusting those (appropriately) don't work in my experience. I once got one to work all day after adjusting. The next day it was dead again.

      I’m not familiar with what effects mods can have on the console so I’m at a loss when it comes to your issue. What I can say about an un-modded Xbox, if it used to read and now it doesn’t, it’s worth it to try an clean the lens. It’s rather difficult to secure a replacement laser nowadays.

      it’s always worth a shot but often the laser is dead. You will have to figure out what model laser your Xbox takes. It’s probably on the laser itself or perhaps on the disc drive case - but here’s an eBay search result to get you going on the search for a new one. If you’re lucky, your Xbox just may take this model laser. search this on eBay or wherever:

    • @RetroFix
      @RetroFix  3 года назад

      You might want to check if the mod chip(s) you are using deactivate your disc drive or not. I have no idea. But what I do know is that un-modded OG XBox’s are really old and their lasers are likely really weak or dead and could use a change.
      Mod chips and their negative/ positives are unknown to me. You’ll have to ask someone with experience on modded xboxes.
