Retro Fix

Well hello there-
Join me won’t you, on a journey of discovery. Beginning with making my/friends NES’s work again (2014); I then moved onto fixing more than NES’s at a video game store (2015). Much of what I've learned thus far has been gathered from YT and trial error. The beautiful thing about fixing video game store consoles is that you can figure things out without worrying about destroying them, It was considered broken anyways.
I spent 4 years fixing retro consoles and 1 1/2 years fixing new gen consoles. Although I do a little soldering from time to time, I’m mainly a parts swapper. Board repair, so far, is outta my league but I’m looking to change that. Maybe even do something crazy like getting certified. Who knows.
Even though I swap parts, one specialty of mine is disc drives. I seem to have a knack for fixing weird issues. Also I’m amazed what a cleaning can do. Most fixes are made from cleanings. Or thermal paste replacements, of which I lay the perfect amount…

C-3P0 Xbox 360 Controller Stick Replacements
Those poor 360 controllers. They need a lot of TLC and I’m the one to give it to them!
I do no talking as you may have noticed. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

On this lovely Sunday I figured I’d time myself and record for a little video that hardly anyone will see. I’ve come a long way in 9 years.

Do you need a soldering iron for this replacement?
@@spyda1205 yes: there are quite a few things you need for this procedure, a soldering iron would be one of them.

@@bgonza2 the correct way to ask the question is: By any chance, are you a Trump supporter? Use correct grammar please.
@@RetroFix Granted, You still haven't answered my previous question.

Good units to have ( I have both the Atten and the Quick ). Get yourself a 90' 1" copper elbow and make yourself a hot-air bidet too for really easy connector removal :D
I got a bunch of the Kitsch-bent gears and sticks and am working on a bunch of N64 controllers right now. Something about the replacement seems to be "sticky". not sure if they need to be worn in or if I need to get some lube. I'll update this comment if I solve the issue.
@@velcro_zipper I’ve noticed that the gray back sticks may have a undesirable feel to them but the black backed sticks take those gears perfectly every time.
1:40 how did you pulled it so easily? I've been trying for 3 hours
@@PrimeRuminant some are in tight. I have a short I made talking about these connectors. The best way to come at them is wiggle while you pull.
@RetroFix Thank you! I'm still trying, Im doing it kinda of a zig zag, still it doesnt get out
Way to fast
Thank you so much brother
I can't go in it
Make sure your headset is on when pairing.
It is on the Headset settings are like off I can't click it
My headset Settings is not working
Nice video but I broke the thing while taking it apart anyways. Sony should be sued for not fixing the issues with stick drift. Having stick drift in a few months or so is unacceptable.
Thank you my old controller is broken so I a new got one and I was looking for a video how to pair it and this showed
I had that same problem i just opened my original microsoft xbox 360 i cleaned fixed inspected refurbished repaired removed all dust off the motherboard the cooling fans the drive belt was stretched i replaced the drive belt and it works excellent
Clicked for the thermal paste how-to, stayed for the commentary and subbed
I fixed an issue just like this the ps5 kicks into gear when booting up ps5 games and runs much warmer than when running a ps4 so if your ps5 overheats you now have a ps4 lmaooooo
thermal past💀
Are we not going to talk about the sticks on the console because wtf
Am I understanding correctly; the PS5 is not a PS5 if it doesn't have liquid metal?
First time I’ve seen this but yes!
Liquid Metal is not existent, ps4 games still run because the game is less intensive, ps5 games it overheats and does not play the game because of temps
You are correct! What was this person thinking?! 🤦♂️ The PS5 worked fine after replacing the liquid metal.
Had this exact issue and had to dish out $230 for a new one from Sony. Would love to know what the actual issue was
For a week stalled my ps4 because the spring fell off and I could not figure out where it belonged. Thank you man.
Not grandma roach slumped on the proverbial circuit board couch
next buy the cockring!
haha
At least you know y’all are 100% friends if not already lol
Thank you so much for this! I'ma do a portable disc drive for my unit

@@yourfreakingrayofsunshine I don’t use Snap anymore but I am friends with danny on Fb. I have signal which is a decent messenger service.
So when I put a disc in my ps4 and when it's in it sounds like a mosquito
@@Vulturegaming-j7l as it spins inside it sounds like a mosquito? Is it loud or is it subtle?
Can it work for the shining black part of PS5?
@@guillermomataserrano9413 I am not sure if it will help it or make it worse. I would try to find something similar to that piano finish on the PS5 (preferably something you don’t care about) and try to use it on that first and see what it does.
@@RetroFix Yeah, I hope will work. Thank you I will try and I tell you

He’s a cool person first and foremost, who cares if he chooses the douche or the shit sandwich.
My go to video because believe it or not ifixit doesnt have an oem ogxbox controller S teardown/guide.
Man I’m so indecisive 🤷♂️ if I want to pick up the new JBC Soldering 👨🏭 sucking machine or get that hacko that you’re using .. that looks like it has a lot of sucking power. That’s what she said lol but for real thinking about investing in the new JBC Soldering stuff
Do you think I could do it by myself
When I first operated on one it didn’t go so good. It took a few disassemblies and reassemblies to get good at it. Most people who don’t work on these all the time will have some issues. The devise may be worse after a noob gets in there. Only you know if you can do it. The video at least gives you an idea of what to expect but also expect the unexpected. If you doubt your abilities too much then I would recommend calling around to your local electronic repair shops. Hopefully someone around you is good at working on video game consoles. I’m working on getting a Mail in service but that is down the road quite a ways.

Thank you. I got CPU temperature down from 65 to 42-44 on idle and never had it over 85, compared to 96!!! Moreover, CPU is now working on 100% power, while old temperatures were achieved while CPU was powered down to 90% (in windows power settings) but it felt 60% slower!
I had zero capacitor leakage and still didn’t work 😔
With electrolytic capacitors, just because they don’t show leakage doesn’t mean they’re bad. If we’re talking about the battery cap, some models don’t have it. If you don’t see any leakage then you probably have a later model which is the better model to have. Unfortunately with lasers, not every one will come back with a cleaning. Most are just dead. You will have to replace the whole disc drive.
@@RetroFix thank you!!
Would this affect disc readability?
If the spring is caught and making that noise it may eventually break teeth on the gears inside which would make the drive not able to take in or eject a disc. If those gears hold strong and don’t break then your laser will read and operate just fine.
My genesis smells so bad hopefully cleaning it works .
hopefully its not the 👀 … bug poo/ pee smell! That can linger for a long time after a thorough clean out. 🤮
@RetroFix might be still smells after like it's been in a attic for 100 years lol

Guys, use the polywatch on the WHOLE lens, i used the polywatch just in the scratched spot and now it has a "distortion" effect on that spot :( it is better than the scratch but its not the better result and it is kind of annoying.
I might give it a try but it look too risky for this. Last year left one was my problem but now the right is my Biggest problem. I probably need my mum to help me with this but we don’t have alcohol in our house. I give you a update if it worked or not.
Thank you for this 🙏🏾
Nice edit❤

do i have to you the can of air?
@@imnotslowish im not a fan of canned air because it sprays moisture too. An air compressor is what I prefer. It helps blow out all of the debris that’s inside. If you don’t use any air then I would try using contact cleaner spray instead of rubbing alcohol.
I replaced the card reader and am still having that message.
@@shadowclaw8607 its either you received a faulty card reader or there’s something wrong on the motherboard related to the card reader. I haven’t come across this one yet but if it happened to me I would first make sure I plugged it all in correctly. If it still did it I’d then remove the reader and inspect the connectors on the motherboard for damage. It’s easy to F them up. I hope this provides some help.
@RetroFix thank you very much! This does help! I'm leaning towards the part being faulty but I'll also check the pins on the motherboard to be sure
