The CRAZIEST FAKE PUNT in Dallas Cowboys HISTORY | Cowboys @ Colts (1981)

- In week 14 of the 1981 NFL season between the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Colts, Cowboys quarterback/punter Danny White called one of the craziest fake punts of all-time, considering the circumstances, and considering how he was feeling. It was a fake punt so crazy that afterwards, all head coach Tom Landry could do was stare at him. This is the story behind the madness

NOTE: In the footage that I watched of Cowboys games throughout the 1980 and the 1981 season, I heard multiple pronunciations of the last name Carano for Glenn Carano. There were some announcers that pronounced it like "cuh-ran-oh," while some pronounced it "sur-an-oh," including the announcers in the Thanksgiving game against the Bears and for much of this game against the Colts. The way I do the pronunciations is based on what the consensus amongst the announcers is, and it seemed that it was the second one; however, if that is wrong, please let me know, because the last thing I want to do is mispronounce a name.
I saw him play when he was with the Pittsburgh Maulers in 1984. Fun Fact: His daughter is HAF. That said, Carano, being an Italian name, would never be pronounced with a soft C sound(like an S). In order for it to have an S sound the C would have to be followed by an i.
I remember hearing his daughter Gina Carano (former Mixed Martial Artist when Womens MMA was in its infancy) having it said with the hard c sounds. Interesting how it changes from person to person. Though my actual last name is a tough one to say and only if it was announced to an audience would it be an issue for me.
Oh...I had an amazing game of Stratomatic back in the day against my old friend Darin where Carano came in.
I always hears it pronounced as "Karano".
In Dallas we pronounced it ka-ra-no.
Even though the Cowboys were rebuilding Danny White was one of the underrated QB in the 80s
And in Tecmo Bowl, not that I would EVER play as the cowboys.
Got to the NFC Championship three straight times.
Tony Romo and Dak Prescott have NEVER played in an NFC Championship
Agree. The QB often gets too much credit or blame. Fair or not, White had critical turnovers in all 3 NFC Championship Game losses.
1980 3rd Q fumble inside own 20 vs Eagles
1981 3rd Q pass intercepted by SF near Dallas 10 yd line, and last minute 1st down fumble while sacked, when Cowboys were just 10 yds from FG range to win game (Guard Kurt Peterson with awful job, allowed 49er DT to bull rush right through him)
1982: late 2nd QTR midfield fumble at Wash.
But it's a team game. Danny White didn't allow 49ers to drive 89 yards for winning TD
Danny White didn't win the Superbowl as a starter but he was on the winning team in Superbowl XII as Roger Staubach's backup.
The fake punt thing was, IMO, even more effective before he was a starting quarterback because people might forget he is the 2nd string quarterback as well as the punter.
amazing how many of those he converted with his feet instead of passing. Dude had some wheels.
The nice thing about it is that when Danny came back into the facility to train later, Landry met him at gate with a smile, and a laugh, and just said "Oh, Danny, even when you're wrong, your right!". And the whole thing was (mostly) forgotten.
Thanks for the posts on the great Danny White. My favorite Cowboys of all time. Just a tremendous athlete!
A notable time when Danny White went against Landry's order and it didn't work was the 'no Danny no' play in the 1983 week 15 game against the Redskins. On 4th and 1 near midfield in the 3rd qtr White was instructed to try to draw the Redskins offsides but not to run a play. White audibled to a run, Redskins defense made the stop and went on to win the game 31-10. Many think that game was the end of the Cowboys being a SB contender in the 80's.
FUNNY.
As a Cowboys fan growing up, I always thought Danny White playing QB on an "UNSUCCESSFUL DRIVE", then staying on the field to punt was some of the COOLEST S**T I had seen!!!
AND YEAH, FOR THE RECORD:
Danny White had a lot of "SUCCESSFUL" FAKE PUNTS during his career, even if this one wasn't one of them.
Was this comment made before watching? He got the first down. I mean, it was the 1981 Colts, for Pete's sake.
Then fast-forward 2 years to 1983 against the Redskins, the infamous “no Danny no!” game. White defying Landry apparently was a habit.
I think White learned it from Staubach. The difference was when Staubach did it it usually worked.
not only was white a qb & punter but as a punter he seemed to do more fake punts than any other punter
Redskins-Cowboys games from that time period had things we'll never see anymore, White being the QB and punter, Theismann being the QB and holder for extra points and FG's, also the single bar facemask.
And the team nickname "Redskins." (Not that I miss it.)
Only people that cared about that was the media.
#11 Danny White: What a truly under appreciated player in Dallas Cowboys history!
"he never made it to the Superbowl". I realize that Roger Staubach was under center for the Cowboys win against Denver in the XII, 1978 Superbowl, but wasn't White the backup? Meaning he was on the team when they won their 2nd Lombardi trophy?
Yeah he has a SB ring, but he was a passenger in the Ferrari, not the driver.
@@KevinT7274Well he was the starting punter so it’s not like he did nothing. And a good backup QB is never easy to find. If Staubach had gone down I am sure White could have easily guided that team to victory, they were that good.
@@tommyl.dayandtherunaways820 They would have beat the Broncos without Staubach. If Drew Pearson isn't horsecollared against the 49ers after the Clark TD White would be viewed differently.
Yeah, he actually made it to the SB twice. That's like saying Steve Young only has one SB championship. I'm guessing he misspoke and meant to say "as a starting QB"
Danny White actually filled in when Roger Staubach injured his thumb and returned to the locker room. I believe it happened in the second quarter.
Danny White was probably the best athlete to ever come out of the State of Arizona. He played Third Base on a number of ASU's better baseball teams. He was a superior athlete who was a dual threat QB at ASU, as well as an All-WAC punter. Those early 1970's teams were probably the greatest span in the school's history in football, and White was a big reason.
I fondly remember the Sun Devils building up to their crescendo of the undefeated 1975 season. Then, with just about everybody back in '76 and a No. 2 ranking to start the season, they mysteriously collapsed and never took their place among the top powers that it had appeared they were about to. So painful.
@@brianarbenz1329 Some key parts of that 1975 team graduated, and left some holes on defense that the new recruits just couldn't fill.
9:45
Bruh, when you said a "passer rating of 8" I almost spit out my coffee. This is absolutely abysmal.
That old "blue jersey curse" didn't happen at this game!!!.... 0:27 and yes, he DID make it to the SB, twice, and has a ring. Albeit as the punter and a backup QB
That was the first season of the blue jerseys the Cowboys have basically worn ever since (they would go to their still-current home jerseys for the 1982 season, though Tom Rafferty for years after would continue to wear the old Cowboys jersey when they wore white).
Ironically, the Cowboys have actually in more recent seasons worn blue jerseys in home games at least once a season.
@@WaltGekko Well, that so called "curse" goes back to SB V when they lost the "blunder bowl" wearing blue jerseys. And the year before in the NFC title game, Philly opted to wear white jerseys even though they were at home, forcing the Cowboys to wear their blue jerseys. Good old NFL superstitions!!
@@leogetz3570 I remember the whole "Blue jersey jinx." That myth was broken in the '90s and as noted in recent years the Cowboys have actually worn blue jerseys for a limited number of home games.
The White Stuff was a song by “Weird Al” Yankovic in 1992.
danny white, tom tupa, randall cunningham. qb-punters. And seeing danny white reminds that the sad last years of the landry era are around the corner.
I just remember Tom Tupa being put in at QB for an injured Testaverde, and threw 2 TD's!! And don't forget about Dan Pastorini!!
@@leogetz3570 'you call me next time. got it.' leo getz things done. Funny. And i remember elway trying to play punter. Too funny.
First time I heard the name Tom Tupa, it was as third-string quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts (behind Jeff George and Jack Trudeau). Then, he was punter for the Browns. I always thought of his as an interesting career path.
@@MarsJenkar yep. from Tosu. backed up two other big 10 qb's george and trudeau both from illinois. illinois with eason and dave wilson was becoming a qb factory under mike white back then.
@@stevenbauer4799 oh hell yes, I totally forgot about Elway trying to punt!! And "Tosu" with a captial T... nice!!!
Fun Fact: The Cowboys were offering to trade Danny White to the Colts to try to get John Elway before the 1983 season. If that trade went through Tom Landry might have been spared his “No Danny No!” moment that year.
The 1981 Colts surrendered a staggering 533 points. Still a record.
Wow. Holy Snickeys
And that Colts team didn't get the #1 pick in the 1982 draft because their only two wins ALL SEASON came against a Patriots team they opened and finished with that fell from just missing the playoffs in 1980 to 2-14 themselves. Colts would outdo themselves in the strike-shortened 1982 season when they were 0-8-1, the only winless team the NFL had until the 2008 Lions went 0-16 and 2017 Browns did the same (and would have also in 2016 except in Week 16 of that season they ran into a Chargers team that had one foot out the door in San Diego and didn't care playing the Browns or the Browns would have been 0-32 over two seasons).
Ironically, the other three teams in that division (Dolphins, Jets, Bills) all made the playoffs, along with the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants in the NFC East, the first time ever that third-place teams (Bills and Giants) made the postseason.
@@WaltGekko "The only winless team the NFL had until [...]"
Since the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers, you mean.
From Week 14 in 1980 to Week 4 in 1983 The Colts were 3-1 vs Patriots and 0-26-1 vs everyone else.
@@mikedecarlo9057 that's almost unbelievable, however I remember when that was. I was just a little guy with my football cards learning that there was 28 whole teams. Two of which dressed alike, teams named after powerful animals, named after swashbuckling warriors, one of them having a swashbuckling guy on there helmet, etcetera. Glorious days to me.
I had a feeling that White ad libbed there. There was no way Landry would've approved of a fake punt given White's physical ailments at the time. I don't blame Landry for being furious and questioning White's sanity.
We'll never see a starting QB that's also the punter again. Too many injury risks covering a kick.
Kudos on the ad being the perfect response to the bad pun.
(And it should have been Weird Al you cited - "I like the white stuff, baby, in the middle of an Oreo...")
This was also the Carano-David Humm battle. Both quarterbacks hadn't started a game in the NFL prior to this matchup, never started again and Humm and Carano had been friends since they were kids.
Glen Carano had a chance in the UFSL too.
@@alangordon9223The Pittsburgh Maulers
Glen Carano is also Gina Carano's father
That why I loved the guy, he knew how to play and he knew how to win!
Wide open Drew Pearson look like he was smothered in coverage to me
It’s a designed play. Watch the cowboys #53. He is unconcerned with the colt defender breaking through the line because the defender goes to the right of #53. If that were a routine we are going to punt play #53 would’ve been focused on that defender.
My first ever NFL jersey, as a kid living in Ohio, was a Danny White jersey. And I've been a Cowboys fan ever since.
Danny got much of his gutsiness from his father, Wilford "Whizzer" White. Father and son were stars at Mesa High School in Arizona, then Arizona State University, then in the NFL (Wilford also played the CFL).
White normally had a green light from Landry to fake a punt anytime he saw there was a high chance of success. He didn't in that situation, of course, but I think that was a heat-of-the-moment decision and he didn't even consider that the he was hurt, until he was down the field, like he said. And then he hightailed it out of bounds before anyone could hit him.
Landry gave White the green light to fake anytime throughout his career.
The 81 Colts gave up 67 tds. Truly atrocious
Bob Irsay gutted the team. Bert Jones had to retire after the 80' season. Irsay wouldn't spend to put a team around him.
@Kevin Trimble Jones was still qb in 81 and retired in 1983, after a season with the rams
@@Fireyninjadog 👍 thanks. Still he retired at 31.
I can honestly say I've never seen a team punt from the opposing team's 26 yard line.
These days everyone's offense stays on the field.
If I recall correctly, another Danny, Dan Pastorini, was the Oilers punter and quarterback in the 1970s.
My dad and I were at that colts game!
9:56 for my favourite QB stat line from our host 👍
I loved Danny White as a kid but it may have been stuff like this that led to them considering trading him for the chance to get John Elway just a couple of years later.
White was the punter when he was Staubach's back up. He also had Landry's ok to call his own fake whenever he wanted based on how he saw the defense line up. No real surprise here, except for the fact that he was hurt.
Bob Bruenig was always KEY at MLB when playing as the Cowboys
Is it just me but does the star on the helmet in 81 look bigger an slightly different?
How long has the NFL had rules about uniform numbers by position? I was under the impression that the way they were assigned meant that you couldn't have this kind of two-way player.
Danny White did make it to the Superbowl
We did see a Tom Brady punt a few times.
Most of the time when Danny followed his instincts it worked out well!!
Carano had an absolutely terrible game as well, but Drew Pearson threw a 59 yarder to Tony Hill. The Cowboys rushed for a team record 375 yards that day.
Always thought it was common that QB played punter case and point Randall Cunningham was both QB & Punter for the Eagles
Jim McMahon too
Dan "The Man" Pastorini. My Dad always talked about him being the punter also for Houston.
@@cajtri87 Oh yea I remember Dan "The Man"
Cunningham was the backup punter, was called into action in a game against the Giants and had a 91 yard punt.
@@KevinT7274 Didn't know he was the backup and I remember his 91 yards punt
The Cowboys could have run the single wing with Dorsett taking every snap and scored 37 against the Colts, who had the most putrid defense in the history of professional football.
FYI, the game vs. the Colts was in week 14, not 13.
Click the card. Click The Card. CLICK THE CARD!
Danny White was not that unusual back then. Before rosters were expanded, it was not unusual for the quarterback to also be the punter. Dan Pastorini was such for the Oilers early in his career while Frank Corral was both the placekicker and punter for the Rams.
By the late 1980's, though, Danny was essentially the only QB/P.
@@josephhouk6703 By then rosters expanded to where that was no longer necessary. When Pastorini did it, the NFL limited teams to 40-man rosters.
I seem to recall the Bengals punter in the 70's was a WR, but I never saw him play as a WR though, but he wore #87.
@@johnmccall8788 Pat McInally. He was both on the first Bengals Super Bowl team (XVI after the 1981 season) as well.
I grew up watching those games and I always head, "cuh-ran-oh," FYI. His daughter is actress and action star Gina Carano.
"Actress" and "action star"
@@PresidentFuller Still mad she refused to put pronouns in her bio?
@michaelreich4827 isn't Actress and Action Star her pronouns?
Carano is pronounced Karano.
Glenn Carano (pronoucned Karano) is the father of Gina Carano (also pronounced Karano). Tell me you're a kid who never really heard of these people, without telling me you've never heard of them. (Sirano, lol)
Actually, Michael Irvin had the "White Stuff." ROFL!
**Blows the whistle** Personal foul, illegal use of a pun. 15 Yard penalty, Third down!
There was no card in the upper-right corner to click on.
Sometimes it doesn’t pop up, which is odd. However, I link all the videos that I say to click in the upper right corner for in the description, so you can watch it there
Of course Landry wouldn't have shot Danny White.
He would have gotten Dick Cheney to do his dirty work 😏
Know you're young, so gonna give ya some slack. lol. Carano you s not Serano, it's pronounced Kuh-rah-no.. Just sayin. 🤘 There's another Carano story that involves Roger Staubach, pretty hilarious..
