Danny White was class act, Roger Staubach was too. Thank-you Tom Landry. Danny White was a very competitive QB in the 1980s. Most underrated QB in Dallas history.
Agree. As a Steelers fan I was so impressed by Danny White. I thought Landry was a genius for having him punt because any punt could be a fake with more probability of success than any other team in the NFL. White was a gentleman & was never the weakness of the Cowboys unless he was half dead or concussed. Washington always seemed to do the best in strike years while the other players took strikes seriously for union solidarity issues. To many the 1982 & 1987 Super Bowls get an asterisk due to strikes. Danny White have as good as he got & always played as well as any QB could when healthy. I will always have respect for Danny White & a lot of the Cowboys. Great competitors who played with class. Henderson was the most athletic LB in the history of the game.

I am 55 years old and my parents had season tickets while I was growing up. My favorite number has been 11 since I was 8 years old. Danny White was always my favorite. ♥️

This is one of the greatest Cowboy history lessons ever! I grew up in the 70s and remember clearly the Staubach years. I thought Danny White was a GREAT QB who almost got Dallas to the big game three times!. I didn't realize the defense was that lacking during that time. Looking back on it, that team got old in key positions very quickly. Many of the players who were starting when i was in elementary school were still starting when i was entering high school. That’s so true. Too Tall and Randy White were players I knew from the time I was born until my freshmen year. And that was before players took care of their bodies like they do now. Walsh would cut players before they got slow. Landry would hold onto them as long as possible.
@@rkid727 when I was a kid, during the Randy White Era. We used to joke that Randy White was kept in a cage and fed raw meat until 3rd down. Then released to eat quarterbacks!

The Cowboys defensive squad from about the middle of 1979 to 1983 deteriorated quite a lot….
The offense was superlative! And Danny White was a major reason- a great quarterback!
Danny was a wonderful player. I wish the Cowboys fans were better to him. As the title states , he was truly unappreciated.
When Staubach retired after the 1979 season, the team also lost two other Hall of Famers in Cliff Harris and Wrayfield Wright, not to mention they also lost Thomas Henderson to addiction, late in the season. Between 1980-1985, the Cowboys only drafted 1 pro bowler…Herschel Walker. Just one in six draft classes, while key vets and pro bowlers were retiring each season.

Every team loses players. The Cowboys were still elite. They were a great team from 1977-1983. Only one trophy though. Losing to the Rams in 1979 was inexcusable. The Rams didn't even belong in the playoffs that year winning most of their games against losing teams, only had nine wins and only got into the playoffs because the rest of the NFC West was horrible. And this was under Staubach. The Cowboys were chokers. They had a great team. The talent was there.
@@gerrypeet4861 yes, every team loses players; but the Cowboys were replacing retired pro bowlers with free agents and late round draft picks; because they were no longer drafting well. They were very good, but not great. It was their core veteran talent that kept them very competitive, especially on offense. Despite the big names on the defensive front four, their secondary allowed too many big plays and tackled poorly; and the linebackers, as a whole, were solid, at best. This was very different compared to the 1970s, when they had a top 10 defense every season except one. In all honesty, every team that beat them in those nfc championships were simply a little better. As for the ‘79 Rams, Terry Bradshaw said the super bowl against them was the toughest game he ever played in his life. The Rams were leading that game until the 4th quarter.

@@gerrypeet4861 The 79' entire season was chaotic. Ed Jones didn't play in 79' to try boxing. SS Charlie Waters missed the entire season with a knee injury. Thomas Henderson's drug problem got the best of him and he was dismissed from the team. "Doomsday" lost 3 Pro Bowl Caliber players from the strong side of the 1977-1978 defense. The team came out flat, probably because that they had destroyed the Rams earlier in the regular season; and as you pointed out the 79 Rams was by far the weakest of the Rams teams from 1973-1979...but their defense was still solid. They gave Bradshaw fits for most of SB 14.
Staubach had yet another concussion in the 1979 playoffs. After he threw a TD pass to Jay Saldi to put Dallas ahead i19-14 he hit his head on the turf after he was tackled. He had to be helped off of the field. I've always felt this is why he looked so bad on that final Cowboy drive of the game. I don't think he would have been allowed back on the field under today's w/out undergoing a concussion protocol. I read years later that Staubach told his wife he was done with the NFL on the way home from the game and he was embarrassed that this last completed pass was to an offensive lineman 😟

Yeah no disrespect but, yeah Tom Landry was so stubborn, he wouldn't change nothing or listen to players in put, that was one of the reasons Roger retired . He didn't used Tony Hill and Drew Pearson enough in all those playoffs games they lost.

I actually think the most under-appreciated Cowboy during the Tom Landry era was LG Herb Scott, who cleared many holes for Tony Dorsett. Tony Dorsett was never the same again after Scott and the LT Pat Donovan had gone down with knee injuries. Those of us who remember Danny White knows he was very instrumental. In Super Bowl XII he led the Cowboys on their best drive of the game until Staubach came back. In the following year he led a comeback victory against Atlanta after Staubach went down, and he did lead the Cowboys to thee straight championship games despite a declining defense.

Herb Scott was great. Rafferty too. A shame he had to become center- he was a great guard.

They were stacked with talent, including the young talent like Scott, Rafferty moved to center when Fitzgerald retired, and Pat Donovan moved from Right Guard to Left Tackle were he was stellar against the pass rushers and did a great job in run blocking for Dorsett. Burton Lawless was also good, but there was no more room on that OL.
@@michaell874 I could be wrong, but Rafferty was slotted as a guard until the injury to Shaw in 1981 I checked the starting stats on Profootbal reference. In '75, Lawless started for Niland, while Scott and Donovan rode pine. In '76, Scott started 10 games and Lawless 4 at Nolan's old spot.(Scott took Lawless' job as you mentioned) In '77; Scott started 10 and Lawless 4 at LG; Raferty started 12 games at Nye's old spot at RG, with Lawless picking up 2, and Rafferty started 2 games for Fitzgerald. Donovan took Rayfield Wright's spot. Raferty was Nye's heir and stayed that way until 1981. In '78, Scott and Rafferty started all 16 games at LG/RG, Donovan took Neely's spot at LT, Wright started 11 games at RT and was spelled by Cooper and Fredrick. in '79; Dallas drafts Robert Shaw, who was supposed to be Fitzgerald's successor at Center, he starts 1 game and Fitz starts the other 15; Scott, Rafferty and Donovan continue to hold their spots at LG/RG/LT and Copper takes over for Rayfield Wright at RT,. Scott and Donovan are named to the Pro Bowl after that season. I'd be willing to bet that Rafferty was in the conversation. Before 1980, Lawless is traded and then suffers a career ending injury. In 1980- same starters, With Shaw starting 2 times for Fitz.Raferty still hasn't made the pro bowl at RG , but Summeral sings his praises and Dallas has allowed Lawless to move on- so their is no obvious back up or competition for either Scott or Rafferty. In 1981, Fitz retires, Shaw takes over and then has a carrier ending injury in game 3. Landry shifts Petersen to guard and Rafferty to center. Peterson is good enough to start, and certainly Rafferty was the better choice for center, but I think Rafferty was a better guard than Peterson.
Danny was a great QB. I've pointed out the horrible drafting many times to other Cowboy fans. Brandt and Shramm's scouting and drafting was revolutionary in the 60's and 70's, but was caught up to in the 80's. Great job on the video. These videos you've been putting out are very enjoyable. Thank you for shedding light on one of the most victimized Cowboys player of all time (Romo being the other). I became a die hard fan during the Danny White era and thought he was more than just an above average QB. White, like Staubach had a penchant for pulling out last minute wins and he is one of the main reasons why I rooted for Dallas week in and week out. His Monday night win against the Redskins (31-30) in 1983 and the 1981 divisional playoff win against the Falcons (30-27) are some of my favorite memories. On a side note, Duane Thomas exposed Tex Scrhamm for the miser he really was. Thank you for the upload.

Dude, out-of-touch, outdated, frankly idiotic comments like these are why their were 3 NFLPA strikes from 1974-87 over the right to even be granted limited FA, larger contracts, signing bonuses, etc. Your comments reflect why NFL salaries exploded through the roof in the late 80's and keep rising due to a more competitive, free marketplace and a oligisphony where the NFL owners and GM's dictate all the terms and have too much, predominate influence and power.
Frankly, Tony Romo made more money in his first 5 years as a Dallas Cowboy then most of the late 60's-early 80's Cowboys players on the teams, including Staubach. Try to acutely rationalize just how much a power and economic disparity ratio and how ridiculous it seems at the same time.

Man I wish Danny White would've won just ONE Super Bowl he was a GREAT QB and as a Cowboy fan that '81 Championship that tackle on Drew Pearson by his jersey or that bullcharge by Pillars that caused the fumble by Danny White on the next play in the '81 Championship and that tackle by Dexter Manley in the '82 Championship that broke Danny's wrist (I think it was Manley) really crushed a possible best Cowboy QB ever argument and HOF career for sure. Thank you! I've been waiting for a video like this on unsung hero Danny White. I remember his taking over in '78 against Atlanta and winning that game and his heroic come from behind in '80 again against Atlanta. He basically stepped into a thankless situation in 1980 and had some really great seasons as a starter. Watching those 3 straight NFC title losses was painful but as you stated, the defense didn't step up when they had to. Watching Eric Dickerson run all over the Cowboys in the '85 divisional playoff was just embarrassing.
My fear is that as time goes by, he's being forgotten more and more. I'm also afraid that Jerry who's had a raging hard-on for his boy Romo all these years will one day put him up in the ring of honor when Danny was much more successful particularly in the playoffs. I didn't start following football until 1980 and I loved Danny. I still think he should get some HOF love...Great punter, great quarterback and I hear he's a great guy...He carried very average teams season after season and took it on the chin from critics with unprecedented class. I really appreciated Drew Pearson's Hall induction speech giving Danny a shout out

I was watching the Cowboys back then. You are so spot on. Danny White got a raw deal. At the end of the day, it was on Tom Landry. He had a unique system back in the 70s. When the 80s came, you had coaches that came with unique systems also.

Wow what tale. I fell head over heels madly in love with the Cowboys as a child in the 70"s and still am to this day. So many of these men where my idols , I was so sad to see them leave when they retired and it is hard to look back and realize so many were aged and past their prime , but to a youth I didn't see it . How old some of them where and the draft picks that didn't pan out.

As a pre-teen 2nd generation Cowboys fanatic in the 1980's living in Southern California, I was such a huge Danny White #11 fan. I actually almost lost my first job freaking out listening to "The Catch" happen on live radio at work. I have never rooted for a player more than I did Danny.
All things considered, Danny White is easily a top 5 Cowboy quarterback of all time. I would go further and say he is a top 3 Cowboy quarterback of all time. To be more clear, even with Aikman and Romo and Staubach, White is still a top 3. Yes I grew up in White's era and have much nostalgia, but he is still a top 3 player for the Dallas Cowboys at that position. Imo. Furthermore, I believe Landry would agree.

20 straight winning seasons meant that you really had to hit on your draft picks because you weren't picking high unless you made trades. They hit more often than not early, but the odds caught up to them in the 80s. The few great players the Cowboys had weren't surrounded by enough talent to overcome teams like the Niners or the rest of the NFC East. Danny White was the QB when I was a younger kid, and I remember some of the heartbreaking moments, and then the wheels fell off when he retired, and the Cowboys ended their winning streak. Danny was better than Meredith, and certainly better than Craig Morton, and on top of that had punting duties the others didn't have. You're right in that the club let his talents go to waste by not adapting to how the league was changing.

Excellent video. Dallas' 80s decline clearly started with the defensive secondary. Cliff Harris' retirement after 1979 was a key part of that, among other changes. But, as you pointed out, ultimately some bad drafts kept them from reloading. They had been great on both sides of the ball before, but in the 80s their offense was the best part of the team. In fairness the Landry administration did draft better near the end, landing guys like Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, Kelvin Martin, Kevin Gogan, and signing Nate Newton. Too late to help them much in the 80s, but they were starting to set the stage for a turnaround talent-wise.
Isn't it funny that although landry wasn't there in the 90s he still had a hand in them winning 3 superbowls because of those draft picks? Legendary!! Thanks for watching as always.

Those teams were so talented, and Danny White was a great quarterback who didn’t get the accolades when he played because the team was in a decline. He, Ron Springs and Herb Scott are the three most under-appreciated players in the NFL.

What can be said about Danny White that hasn’t already been said in these other comments? He had an aging team around him & as brilliant as Tom Landry was the rest of the NFL was passing him by. Thank you Danny White for everything you endured from constant fan criticism, to concussions & broken wrists to put The Cowboys in a position to win for so many years. I always like Danny. We played in 3 straight NFC championships. The Eagles, 49ers, and Washington didn't repeat that and they all won one in that 3 year stint. Very impressive!!! DC4L!!!
Danny White was a solid Quarterback and an exceptional team leader! I grew up watching him play and I was a big fan of his as well. He was a winner and doesn't get the proper recognition and respect as one of the greatest QBs in the COWBOYS' history. Had Everson WalIs not blown his coverage and allowed Dwight Clark to make that catch, we would have been in the SUPERBOWL. I think think that he was better than Tony Romo and Dak Prescott.
I would put him third in ranking the greatest QBs in club history after Staubach and Aikman.

I agree with you 100% with your assessment of Landry. I made a reply to 1 of your videos he allowed his front 4 to get old while replacing retired old secondary guys with youth. He didn't get younger fast enough he was too loyal to older players and the defense suffered. Danny was a good QB and I respect him alot wish others would too. Great video. I don't understand why a punter/quarterback didn't become a trend cause on 4th down it just seems like a major advantage having your QB in there for fakes.
That's true. It should've become a trend.
The Cowboys-Redskins rivalry from that era had a few things you'll never see anymore. White being both the starting QB and punter and on the other side Theismann being both the QB and holder for Moseley plus wearing the single bar facemask. Using a QB in those situations always presented the threat of a fake so teams would be less likely to go all out trying to block a punt or FG.

Agreed! 100% You know for years I also blamed White. However, before Landry was fired in 87 and 88 you could see the Cowboys just didn't have any speed. As great as Landry was in the 70's at choosing talent and being ahead of the curve in being creative with motion, the flex etc. he didn't realize that in the late 70's teams were catching on to those schemes. Instead of continuing to evolve in that area he stayed with the same things, and then you add on the issues with the draft it was easy to see Landry and Mr. Schram failed us. White was a great QB I will never forget when he threw that pass to Pearson in 81 vs. the Niners. I honestly thought they were still going to win that game. The come back vs. Atlanta was epic!! White is a Cowboy legend! The mistakes that Landry made in those drafts Johnson was able to catch on quickly and analyze the NFL to see it was speed , and quickness that was needed. The team speed as well as the physicallity of the 90's Cowboys is what made them the dynasty. The eye for talent Johnson had in the 90's is what Tom had in the 70's. Tom just never evolved. Still love him though and I love my Cowboys! Thanks again for the video and making sure these younger Cowboy fans know how great he really was. He was better than Romo lol. How bout them Cowboys!

Except for SBs X and XIII (both vs Pittsburgh), I've never been a Cowboys fan! I do, however, appreciate great players. Danny White was a GREAT player whom I believe is overall grossly underrated and disrespected by Dallas fans! Though he lacked the style and flashy moves of his predecessor, Roger Staubach, and the larger-than-life charisma of Don Meredith, White was a loyal, royal blue-wearing stud and right there with both of them for leading that franchise to great successes; however, Tony Romo (prior to his broadcasting career) gets more accolades. REALLY!?!? White's playoff record is 5-5 with three NFC title appearances; whereas Romo's playoff record is 2-4 with ZERO NFC title appearances. I'll compare White to Meredith all day long for they both took the Cowboys to the brink of the Super Bowl multiple times only to taste bitter defeat which, included falling literally a single play short of taking them to the big game.
As a Giants fan but just as much a fan of NFL history, I want to say I really appreciate the work you put in these videos. Digging up clips that I've never seen as opposed to the same old half dozen NFL Films clips that are repeated endlessly.

Excellent dive into the numbers and the reality of an excellent player following in the shadows of a legend who served in the Navy before playing in the NFL. Thats some American apple pie stuff that has nothing to do with skill. Your dead on with your analysis of a declining defense and a "system" that people were catching up with. I doubt theres more than 2 teams that ever won a SB with a defense ranked 17 or 20th if that. Heres another nugget for you that you may already know but during Landry' time they started using computers to assess talent with an Indian guy named Salam being the comp program guy (cant remember his last name) I think this makes them the first team to ever use analytics to grade talent and I think they all do it now. BUT HERES THE KICKER For some reason they agreed to share their system and one of the teams they shared it with was the SF 49rs. I think ST Louis was the other?

I always said these things about Danny. He inherited an old defense on the decline. Bad drafts, bad trades, etc. I enjoyed those days with Danny as QB.

Excellent info. Danny White had tall odds against him following the greatest Cowboy there was. He was the one who took most of the blame. Good points about his surrounding cast. I remember being frustrated with the three NFC losses in a row, but he took more criticism than he deserved for sure.

And I'll have to say the same for Tony Romo whom like White statistically out performed his predecessor but unfortunately didn't have the competitive team around him. I'm sick and tired of fans Overly praising Staubach/Aikman. Sure they were fine players but both were surrounded by the very elite athletes while White/Romo played for poorer, unbalanced squads. QBs always get too much Glory and too much blame! Though I love the Legendary Tom Landry...he failed to make the necessary adjustments for the league was vastly changing and he didn't change with it!! I salute Belichick for at least doing a better job in maintaining contention.

Just want to say that you being great insight to the Cowboys & to the NFL. The Cowboys should hire you as a staff historian. As a Steelers fan I always respected the Cowboys,Tom Landry & a lot of their players for being able to perform so well under glaring pressure. One of my favorite humorous Cowboys stories is RB Duane Thomas. He’s hilarious on the “America’s Game” episode.

Next, the ‘81 Playoff game at the 49ers demonstrates perfectly why fans had a love/hate relationship (and for me, there was NO love at all) with Danny White. I didn’t realize though, that the D was so poor that year, but to be fair, Dak’s been questioned as to whether he can lift the play of his teammates. But looking back, I can see the only type of QB to replace Roger that would have been acceptable to me would have had to have as much success as Tom Brady. That’s because Roger meant so much to me as a boy and a young man. And you hit the nail on the head, the game definitely passed Coach Landry by. He refused to change the Flex Defense at all, and once teams got good players with speed, they started defeating it badly.

When the NFL Players association went on strike, Danny White crossed the picket line. After the strike was over the receivers would not catch any of his passes. He could lay the ball in their hands and they wouldn't close their hands around the ball. They basically refused to play with him.

Amazing analysis sir- Danny White was super great to accomplish what he did with what circumstances he was fated to have.
Danny was a really good 80s QB. He threw a lot of interceptions though and it seems like Dorsett and Danny had at least one fumble a game. A lot of his problems were the offensive line was injured, and Drew Pearson wasn't getting open that much any more. Still he was better than most QBs he played against and would have made it to the Super Bowl if the defense wasn't so bad.

Danny White was an excellent athlete. Other than the fact that he was an excellent passing A N D running QB, he had a brilliant mind.
It used to be that a football team's QB was one of the best...if not THE best, athlete on the team. Romo no doubt could pass the ball a little, but during his entire career, he was the worst athlete on the Cowboy's roster.
He was the slowest runner on the team, year in and year out.
He couldn't even outrun any of his offensive linemen.🏈
I disagree. Danny White accomplished far more (three NFC title appearances to zero) than Tony Romo in big D. If anything, White has more in common with "Dandy" Don Meredith, the first Cowboys' QB to experience great championship-level disappointment multiple times. He also effectively ran with a very heavy baton that was handed to him by Roger Staubach, the first Cowboys QB to lead them to the top (SB VI).
I would take White any day over Romo.
But Romo earned a reputation as a choker. Key word, 'Earned.' The Cowboys biggest problem during the Romo years however was its owner, 'Jerry Jones.' And still is.
When you have a player like Roger, his back up is got to be great also! These guys worked together, pushed each other, made each other better for the game!

I think he was also under-appreciated as a punter. He didn't have the big yardage average of some other punters of the time, but that was because the Cowboys could consistently get past the 50. What they needed from White was a coffin-corner kick inside the 5, and he delivered that consistently.

I was a big Dallas fan back in the 1970/80s and had huge respect for Coach Landry. I always thought that Danny White was under appreciated by Dallas for no reason that he was responsible for. I loved your analysis and presentation of some of the issues that the cowboys faced during the Danny White years. I detested the blow-hard owner of the cowboys who forced Landry out. However, your analysis of the change in the talent to the NFL and the Landry recruiting approach did provide at least some rationale for that decision. I listened to several of your videos and they are always interesting and informed. Love the direct and rational analysis presented.

Thank you for this video, and for logically pointing out what Danny White did and had to go through. He was my favorite player after Roger Staubach retired. He did his best in his time as a starter, and played well. He has to be the most underappreciated starting quarterback in Cowboys history, and that is a shame. As the old saying goes, the quarterback gets too much credit when the team wins, and too much blame when they lose, it's just the nature of the position. Another well put together and thought out video!
This video is an outstanding assessment of Danny White and the Cowboys of his era. Many mistakes were made including poor drafting and unlucky drafting. Mike Sherrard had potential as a wide receiver but was injury prone. Robert Shaw would have been a star on the offensive line but tore up his knee twice and had to retire. LB's Jesses Penn and Bill Cannon would have been stars except both suffered career ending neck injuries. Larry Bethea had great potential but drug problems ruined his career. And there was the miss on Jerry Rice that Dallas had rated #1 in the draft. The Cowboys wanted him badly but a scout leaked info that caused the 49ers to look at him. And during White's time, the Cowboys would draft at the end of the draft most of those years while the rivals drafted earlier. Finally, after making so many good trades in the 1970's, teams would no longer trade with Dallas. There are many other personnel issues that hurt the team but I would say that Landry and Danny White did extremely well under the circumstances. By the way, I certainly enjoy my subscritption to your excellent channel.

Great video. I really appreciate how you did a deep dive into how bad the defense, and really the team in general was trending. I'd love if you could do a video or series about how bad the front office was at drafting from 78 to 88. I've gone through those years drafts. It would shock you on all the mistakes and questionable decisions in those drafts. Jeffcoat in 83 and Irvin in 88 are the only exceptions. A great what if??? What if the Cowboys had drafted Marino, instead of Jeffcoat. The Cowboys had the great luck in udfa like Walls, and Downs, ect... The luck they had in finding udfa was the main source of talent in the early 80s.

I was a big fan of Danny White. Most people do not remember this but, in a playoff game in Texas Stadium against the Atlanta Falcons when Staubach was knocked out of the game, it was Danny White who led the comeback victory. In Super Bowl XII, Staubach hit his throwing hand against a helmet and came out of the game for a few plays. But in those few plays, Danny White led the Cowboys up and down the field on the best drive of the game until Roger came out of the locker room and ran onto the field. White led the Cowboys to three consecutive championship games. He cannot be blamed in the game against SF, and although the games the Eagles should have been at home, the team didn’t exactly show up to play, and the Redskins were just a little better in the other game. Danny White was great when zipping the ball in, but he scared the hell out of me when he used to throw those floaters that took so long to fall that even defenders misjudged it and often dropped what should have been easy interceptions.
Oh yes, I remember the Atlanta game oh so well. It was in the 1978 Divisional Playoffs. Robert Pennywell a linebacker for Atlanta, knocked Staubach out of the game. Danny White came in the and they did not miss a beat. He led the Cowboys to a 27-20 playoff victory over the Falcons.
The only "mistake" Danny made was he was the Cowboy QB to follow the Great One Roger Staubach. Yep.
Let's also remember Danny White struggled with some injuries as well

For me, he’s second-tier as a Cowboys QB, along with Don Meredith. The fact that the team went to 3 consecutive NFC championship games and won 2 division titles while he was the f/t starter tells you how good he really was.
About that 81' NFC Championship game, what makes it even more tragic for White is that he had outplayed Montana by a wide margin until that final drive by each team, with Montana throwing 5 interceptions that day in the victory.

Danny White was a great quarterback who didn’t quite get the respect he deserved, but he did lead the Cowboys in their best drive in Super Bowl XII when Staubach went off for a few plays after hitting hit throwing hand. White led some incredible comebacks, including one against Atlanta in the playoffs when Staubach got hurt, and again in the playoffs when he hit Drew Pearson twice with great precision passes. Only his infamous floaters drove me nuts, but hey, a play here or a play there and he would have won a Super Bowl, and we would be talking about him in other manner. There’s too much emphasis on whether or not someone wins a championship sometimes because in a team sport, no one is ever going to win by himself.
