Dumb Decisions: The WORST Fake Field Goal Ever (Cowboys @ Cardinals - 1988)

- In a 1988 game between the Phoenix Cardinals and Dallas Cowboys, head coach Gene Stallings had a chance to tie the game on a 42-yard field goal from Al Del Greco. What he opted to do instead was much, much worse

"it's not like those 3 points would come...are you kidding me?"
Laughed too hard at that one
Both announcers saying "What!?" at the same time after the play, lol
Either Gifford or Dierdorf (probably Dan) muted themselves to yell "What are they DOING?!" but they exclaim it loudly enough that they're heard under Al's PBP.
In the words of Al Michaels 12 years later, HE DID WHAT?
@@pronkb000 It's Dierdorf.
"I'll tell you what, Phoenix- the Cardinals are in town!"
Uttered by ex-Cardinal Dan Dierdorff who had an axe to grind with the organization.
Prepare for a decade of ineptitude
@@alvansmith2304 He may not have been objective but he also was not wrong.
The announcers were GOLD!
At first the announcers were thinking, “Did we miss something? Did the clock say 13 seconds and we didn’t see the first digit?” Then they realized it was the coach who missed something.
You should do the Browns calling a draw play on 4th and 9 against the Rams in week 2 of 2019. I don’t know how Kitchens wasn’t fired on the spot.
I read somewhere that Del Greco was the best golfer in NFL history. I wonder if that affected Coach Stallings' decision here.
Landrys last year coaching. Del Greco was a decent kicker. Gene Stallings was a coach on Landrys staff for years.
Del Greco was much better with the Oilers/Titans than he was with the Cardinals.

“Welcome to Dumb Decisions.”
The further back you go, the more it sounds like the great Al Michaels was inhaling helium.

@@stephenh5944 Exactly! Lol
Go back to the “do you believe in miracles” call, and it sounds like he’s still going through announcer puberty haha. It’s crazy how he went from this to the deep, rich baritone we’ve come to know and love.
That's a great play call if it's 4th and 1 and there's 303 seconds left in the half. With 3 seconds left it's only worth trying if the ball is on the 2 yard line.
2:30 "WHAT?!"
Man, Al Michaels has seen so many crazy, ridiculous things in his broadcasting career (to say nothing of him calling other sports, like the “do you believe in miracles” call). From this, to the Colts 4th down fiasco, to the super bowl 49 ending, to the Favre to Freeman throw, to the ending of super bowl 34, and so on and so on. The stories that guy could tell...
Funny how Gene Stallings was decent at Alabama and won a National title there. Years later history repeats with Nick Saban. Although he had coached at LSU prior and had amazing success there too
Stallings' Cardinals teams had shown flashes of potential (the previous season the Cardinals in going 7-8 narrowly missed the playoffs after losing their last game to...Dallas. Also, the Cardinals started 7-4 in that season before a 5-game skid to end the season {coinciding roughly with Neil Lomax suffering a hip injury that ended up ending his career and ultimately required Neil to undergo hip replacement surgery in 1991)
That option pitch was perfect. A play goes exactly how you draw it up lol
Would have worked great on 4th and 3 with a minute to go.
I say it on every video but such great, in depth information.
With 3 seconds left on the clock & you're gonna call that??? What bonehead call that play???
KICK THE DAMN FIELD GOAL!!!
The announcers’ reaction is perfect
Also I think we are no-selling the head spinning analysis from Frank Gifford. He seemed to fawn over the play, before being tipped off by the teams walking to the tunnel that running the clock out with the ball in the kicker's hands by design was not Lombardian strategy.
I've seen this full sequence--"They set it up so beautifully" refers to the clock management *before* the play, which was a pretty nicely run two-minute drill (Frank is praising them for getting in position to kick a FG before everything goes to hell). Frank could be out to lunch as time went on but it sounds better in full context than it does here.
Wanna guess who kicked for Tennessee a decade later?
I was hoping that he was the one with the 20 yard run instead of Husted. 😂
What makes this play really stand out is the Cards lost the game 17-14.
There was Chester Marcol running for his life, but that wasn't designed.
Good stuff keep it up
For a long time, the only time the Cardinals would sell all tickets (yes I'm aware even if all tickets are sold; doesn't mean all people show up) was when the Cowboys came to visit.
Well at least everyone learned a valuable lesson. This same mistake hasn't happened again since.
Wait a minute. Didn't the Seahawks try this against the Falcons on MNF in 2017? What was the score of that one? *Checks the score* The Falcons won 34-31. The Seahawks missed the playoffs by one game (9-7) while the Falcons made the playoffs by one game (10-6)…
WTF is with MNF and dumb decisions?
I have a suggestion, @Official JaguarGator9: do one on why Tempe lost Super Bowl XXVII (which went to Pasadena, California)...
Chester f'in Markel
Come on Al Del Geraco is greatest football player ever.
At 5:23 marke I think its Jim breach against the Pittsburgh Steelers monday night.
Honestly, that wasn't even a bad play. Would have worked great for picking up a first down to keep a drive going. Just don't call it with 3 seconds left in the half.
If they called this at any other time, I’m in complete agreement. Not gonna fault a team for trying a fake field goal like this under normal circumstances
As the final play of the half from that far back? No way
Timing is everything, or so they say... Don't ask who 'they' are, or I'll be in trouble
The way you explain the weird division is simply the fact that the NFL was too lazy to realign divisions.
and del greco kicked in the nfl for 12 more years
Didn't Bidwell also move the cards to Tempe so that he could retire in the warm arizona desert?
Speaking of dumb decisions: Herschel Walker......
Too easy?
Hey Jaguar, when did fans start wearing team apparel?
It became really prevalent around the mid-90s, though you saw some people wearing jerseys in the stands throughout the 70s and 80s.
The mid-90s is when it really seemed to take off
Are we not gonna talk about the cameraman that got mauled at 1:45?
There is another reason not to run the play. Kickers tend to be smaller and less muscular than other football players. They also wear less padding.
You don't want to get your kicker hurt.
At least Tempe is a suburb of Phoenix, they played closer to city center than the Irvine Cowboys did to Dallas.
At least called plays in state cough Giants cough Jets
Maybe that was a punt referring to my first post. But in the defense of coach everything's happened to the Cowboys the first time before any other team. Check the data on that.
Uh...Whaaaaaaaaaatt????
@@diaz5292 I think more records have been broken on the Cowboys and the other team in the NFL that's what I meant
@@azahrmalik2259 The other team being the Cardinals? So you think more records have been broken by the Cowboys and The Cardinals. Right?
Del Greco’s only run of his career
I’ve seen way worse playing madden!
I've seen fake plays in Madden that don't work. Even the announcers question the decision to fake a field goal or a punt if it goes wrong.
An Alpha Beta could have told you it would backfire!!!
