This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about how CBS responded to a weather disaster before Super Bowl 12 the year before.
I had something similar happen a few years ago during the Patriots-Falcons Super Bowl. A generator went out in the second quarter and about 4-5 towns/cities were completely blacked out. We (a few friends) were in a bar and never have I seen so many people getting out emergency chargers (ones with built in batteries or gears you wind), downloading Fox Sports app, and the bartenders start writing down a can tally to keep some calculations on tabs. It came back on just before the Pats took the lead. The bar was trying to prevent people from leaving and skipping the bill. Generally everyone was well behaved and there was no snow and we had cell phones so no where near as bad as this.
Great video! I'm glad you were joking about the Lewiston people not being mad. As a diehard Steelers kid fan living in Chicago I would've been crushed had I missed THIS game of all games! Steelers 4ever, Cowgirls never!
Ironically, the weather for Super Bowl XLVIII in The Meadowlands was excellent with it being 49 degrees at kickoff, warmer than many of the traditional Super Bowl sites. Of course, the temps dropped right after the game with a snowstorm by the next morning.
Here's my question: why in the world would the program director and/or the operations manager of that radio station make the decision to air the Super Bowl knowing there's at least a 50-50 chance of the game not ending before they are legally required to sign-off for the broadcast day? As a former program director of a radio station, I would have never made that decision on a local level. If there's a chance you have to dump out before the game is over, you go with alternate programming. CBS Radio had the rights to the Super Bowl that year, so we can assume this was a CBS Radio affiliate station. I hope that the decision to air it was one that was made by New York and the station had no choice.
Ok....number one Lewiston ID is down in a valley. About 745 ft above sea level. Right before you come to it, on the north side of town, there is a canyon cliff (Lewiston Hill). You have to drive up that hill to get to Pullman on US 95 and it is called Lewiston grade. The top of that hill is 2700 ft above sea level making the drop 2000 ft from top to bottom. Lewiston RARELY gets that kind of winter weather. So it is Clearwater's fault. Second KLEW is NOT a NBC affiliate, it has always been a CBS affiliate. Since they are the only station in town, they would show special programming (like the Super Bowl) from other networks. (Fun fact - KLEW was once owned by Walt Disney's wife.)
Super Bowl 13 here on Friday the 13th. The bookmakers got "middled." The game opened at PITT minus 3.5 and ended up at 6. People who bet PITT early and on DAL late won both bets.
Honestly I am a little surprised they didn't re-air it locally. I'd figure with the uproar and everything that the network would try to re-air it for the town
The backup to the backup was broken? I feel awful for the NFL fans who lived in Lewiston back then. They missed a hell of a Super Bowl through no fault of their own.
Something very similar happened in East Central Illinois during the 1998 NFC championship game between the Falcons and Vikings. WCCU 27 fox affiliate was out all day. I remember trying and trying to call the station, but getting a busy signal each time. Cable or antenna, we couldn't watch. A buddy of mine had "that new" satellite system called Directv, and since they couldn't broadcast local stations at that time, they would broadcast the national feeds of network programming. So quite a few of us ran over to his house and caught the second half. Would love to see you do a video on that, if you could find any info on it
How I cackled at “this is the day the Lord has made.” You had me going before that. There was, however, a dispute at the time over whether Super Bowl XIII was really better than X. NFL Films immediately declared X “the best ever,” but it was a low bar. XIII was 35-17 for a few minutes, but was very close most of the time, and I would give it a slight edge over X-but it’s close and many disagree.
Right before Super Bowl XIX right before kickoff our cable went out. Thankfully we still had our old aerial hook up and we were able to watch the game save for about 15 minutes of the beginning.
Don Weiss ran the Super Bowl for the NFL that year. He said George Halas wanted to get out of the car before the coin toss. Weiss knew that would cause a significant delay, as Halas was 83 and not getting around that well. Weiss got on his walkie-talkie and yelled at Halas to stay in the car.
Excellent Video. I remember this game very well. Dallas was down 35-17 then scored late to at least cut to 4 and have an on sides kick. I believe this was the last Super Bowl broadcasted by Curt Gowdy, ( I never spelled his name correctly) and the last time the game was played at 4pm. You did a video on Super Bowl 12 when CBS pushed the game back to 6pm. Also the Orange Bowl hosted this game for the 5th time in 13 years
Actually, Super Bowl XVIII (January 1984) was a 4:40 PM kickoff, the last time the Super Bowl would kick before 5:00. The last Super Bowl to kick before 6:00 PM was Super Bowl XXIII in January 1989. Every Super Bowl since has kicked after 6:00 PM ET.
There was no "clear channel" AM station they could hear it on? WJR here in Detroit (at night) can be heard halfway across the country. I'm surprised there wasn't another station on TV or AM it could have been heard/viewed.
When the TV station went out, fans are listening to the Super Bowl on a battery powered portable radio for emergencies to hear the rest of the game including the play-by-play, and the whole sha-bang.
As someone who’s seen (almost) every Superbowl Superbowl 10 is the first one I would classify as good. The Steel curtain was something else. For context I’m in my mid 20s. The first SB I watched live was Colts/Bears. The only only interesting things about the early SBs are the weird stuff, like they originally had 2 distinctly different footballs depending on what team was on offense, the goal posts being in the wrong place, and the amount of things that would draw a flag in today’s game. My goodness the horse collar tackles are everywhere.
Your thumbnail indicates that NBC was of the Proud N logo when they showed Super Bowl XIII, yet that is not entirely true-- while they did adopt their then-new Proud N logo in 1979, that was later in that year; their logo on this Super Bowl XIII broadcast was the red and blue Trapezoidal N, since this was in Jan. 1979.
This is very similar to what happened in 1990 with the World Cup Final between Germany & Argentina in Prince George & all of northern British Columbia. Unlike in the US where the World Cup was only available on cable via TNT (yes TNT did cover the World Cup in 1990 in one of the worst covered World Cups in US history, mainly because they inserted commercials in the middle of the game) the World Cup was on over the air CBC in Canada. For the majority of Canada there were no issues with the broadcast. However in northern BC & Prince George just before the match kicked off at noon, the power went out due to rolling blackouts. This was because the BC Power Authority (now Hydro BC) had a policy at the time stating if the temperature went above 80 degrees, rolling blackouts would occur in order not to over-strain the power grid. The temperature at the time was 81 degrees & was expected to reach 84 as the high so the earliest the power could come back on was at 6:00 well after the match concluded. Because of this, people had to drive down to Williams Lake 146 miles away if they wanted to watch the match. However unlike this Super Bowl, the people of Prince George & northern BC did not miss much from that year's World Cup Final as it was easily the worst World Cup Final of all time as the match became a foul filled affair & Germany won 1-0 on a penalty kick late in the match.
If you had a good a.m. receiver or short wave there is a good chance you could have picked up the radio broadcast on a more distant station especially after dark when signals travel farther
It happened to Los Angeles in 2014. During the 2nd Quarter of the Super Bowl between Seattle and Denver, Time Warner Cable dropped its standard definition TV channel connections, including the SB in SD, to all SoCal subscribers. By the time TWC restored service during the 2nd half, Seattle had already put away the win. Those customers watching on an HD channel never experienced a problem.
