    This game also went to show how deep those Bills teams were in the early-90's. Despite the fact that this was a meaningless game for them.
    Lose a Jim Kelly? Frank Reich filled in very capably.
    Lose a Thurman Thomas? Kenneth Davis filled in very capably.
    Even when Bruce Smith was lost for most of that 91 season, the Bills defense might have bent, but didn't break. And for a unit that spent more time on the field than any other in the league in 91 (thanks mainly to the Bills' up-tempo offense), it could have been worse.
    Needless to say, a month later, Thurman Thomas lost his helmet, and he couldn't play (at least until it was found).
    That joke aside, it's hard to have a team so deep nowadays. If your quarterback goes down, your team's fortunes go down with it, too.

    In “The Game Behind the Game” Terry O’Neil talked about covering the 1983 Pan Am Games from Venezuela. The Venezuelan organizing committee promised O’Neil and CBS they would provide coverage of the opening ceremony, but changed their minds about 72 hours before the ceremony. O’Neil said he had to scramble. Among other things he did was taking and old production truck that resembled a family camping trailer and packing it with all the television equipment they needed.

    Broadcast issues..... I'll never forget the 1998 NFC championship game, the OT game between the Dirty Bird Falcons and the Minnesota Vikings. The local Fox affiliate in East Central Illinois (WCCU 27) was out all day, nothing but snow on the channel, cable or antenna. I was able to see the 2nd half because a co worker had DirecTV, which was still new at that time, and since they couldn't broadcast local channels yet, they would show the national network feeds. Was wondering if you had any info on that situation

    • @heartlandauthor
      @heartlandauthor Год назад +1

      WCCU didn't air about half of the 2001 Daytona 500 (IIRC, the broadcast went out not long after the start of the race and didn't resume until not long before the multi-car crash in which Tony Stewart's car flipped) due to technical issues, and they were the de facto primary Fox affiliate for the Bears later that year because the Bears relocated to Champaign for one season while Soldier Field was rebuilt. I remember that station from when I was a kid because it was the station that would go out on the cable system anytime their microwave link from their parent station WRSP in Springfield, Illinois would malfunction for whatever reason. When DirecTV started carrying local channels for the Champaign-Springfield DMA, they carried WRSP as the sole Fox affiliate for the market, which they still do to this day.

    My parents and I lived in Kenmore, NY at the time, not too far from Orchard Park. The game was a local blackout, so what we needed was to rewire the attendance figure. It was all okay though, Jets/Dolphins was a gem, and I'm not a Bills fan ( I do like the more recent Bills teams though, and might've become a fan if I grew up with these squads).
    This was a gutty & inspired Lions team though: I think the first game against the Vikings (winning 24-20 after being down 20-3), the 2nd Packers game the previous week (winning 21-17 outdoors), and this game defined their regular season.

    I remember watching the OG xfl in 2000 they show another game while the main game had issues with power

  • @chrisguardiano6143
    @chrisguardiano6143 Год назад +2

    This is very similar to what happened a decade later with the 1st version of the XFL in a game between the LA Extreme & the Chicago Enforcers where the production truck went out. However that situation was much worse because it happened in the middle of the game & because the XFL was totally reliant on NBC for coverage of Saturday night games (due to Vince McMahon being absolutely determined on getting the highest possible ratings) the game was basically lost for an extended period of time in many areas of the country. NBC was forced to switch to the other game they were airing between the Orlando Rage & the SF Demons while the problem was being fixed. When the LA-Chicago game finally came back (and almost cut off the ending of SF-Orlando), it was heading towards a thrilling double OT finish. This created another major issue as the ending of this game delayed the start of Saturday Night Live which instead of starting at 11:30 PM ET started at 12:15 AM ET Sunday morning 45 minutes late. This really angered Lorne Michaels the creator & producer of SNL because he expected high ratings for that week's show because Jennifer Lopez was guest hosting. Because SNL was joined in progress, the ratings absolutely tanked for that week. For those wondering why the production truck went out in the first place, it was because someone at NBC had forgotten to fuel the generator an hour before the game. Because of all this, NBC was forced to cut off all future XFL telecasts that season on Saturday nights at 11 PM ET regardless if the game was over or not in order to keep SNL on time.

    • @danielanderson4726
      @danielanderson4726 Год назад +2

      What i remember was that they sent both teams to the clubhouse while NBC was forced to switch to the other game they were airing between the Orlando Rage & the SF Demons while the problem was being fixed. As far as NBC was forced to cut off all future XFL telecasts that season on Saturday nights at 11 PM ET regardless, i believe that in one case, WMAQ in Chicago was allowed to stick with a Enforcers game into SNL and the rating was quite good for that time period.
