I lived in Morocco for a couple of years and the wood is from the olive tree. It’s the most common form of wood used there for furniture. However they do also use almond, thuya, ash and boxwood as well as importing lots of ebony and rosewood. I love olive wood as the grain is always so beautiful. You did an excellent job on this table. It looks absolutely wonderful.

My dad was stationed in Rabat in the early 1950s. He brought back all sorts of things as souvenirs for his family, but no tables. He retired from the Air Force near a base popular with retirees so we actually see versions of this table in antique stores fairly often. The clean lines of the table legs definitely coordinate with the mid century style. Guys stationed in Morocco, and later Spain, brought a lot of these tables home along with tea pots and textiles! The tables I see in the antique stores never look as good as your restoration. 😊

Wow Jay! What a beautiful piece. I knew I was gonna like this project the moment you revealed the piece you’d be working on. Stunning piece made even more stunning by your expert craftsmanship. By the way, I really like the videography technique you used. I loved the new intro and I liked that you narrated as you worked instead of overdubbing audio narration. Great craftsmanship, both with the project and with the videography.

I totally agree about the Production aspects. He’s much more comfortable in front of the camera and with video production, so having him talk in real time rather than dubbing later is a much better idea.
I also really like the new intro…it’s a step closer to having his account feel like a show/channel rather than a bunch of individual videos. A longer version - like 30 seconds - (imho) would be really great idea.

Brass polishes have been around since the beginning of the early 20th century. I have used salt and water, pumice and water, even a light coat of rubbing compound. They need a weekly whipe down or nowadays a clear coat finnish. Clear laquer was used before clear coat but you had to be careful cleaning it after. Most of the time it got a bad rap, because the brass wasn't prepped well at first and then harsh cleaning chemicals left bare patches in the laquer which required stripping the whole surface and people didn't want to ordidn't realize it needed to be stripped. Believe me I would gladly polish a table top over well used brass cuspidors.

Good job. 👍👍The only thing you always want to do with brass is a sealant. Wax sealer for brass polishes also or a laquer after. Don’t try the sealant especially made for brass on big surfaces like that. It will get really streaky. Without any of those this will turn dark pretty quickly. Cute table

I would love that table so much! I went to Morocco every three months for nine years when I lived in Spain... I never did get one of those, but still wish I had one now. I have four tables with brass tops but mine are all Asian, two are Antique. I clean mine with fresh lemon juice. I just cut the lemon in half and rib the flat cut lemon onto the brass. Once in a while I use Brasso, and if I get a bad stain I may use some finest steel wool. All Summer my brass table tops are outside on my deck with a thick clear glass over them so they stay untarnished and protected.

Beautiful in brass. Similar in design to an all wood antique table I have. We call it gateleg.

So beautiful. Lovely to see the repair work to the leg. Like so many others I have kept company with a similar table - back in my medieval middle eastern reenacting days. I hope my ex still has the table somewhere…😏😊

I have one just like that, it measures 40 inches across, (103 cm), and is a bit more ornate with the metal etchings. When we were living in Tripoli, Libya 62 years ago my parents had one custom made, and we had the exact same folding base for it. Unfortunately, over time, the base got lost in a move so I turned it into a wall hanging. Using 3 large L-bolts to hold it up. I'm saving this video to send around, and hopefully, I can find those brass footing covers and have another base made for it.

I seem to remember the old guys used to dry buff the brass pieces. Then they lacquer the brass.

You did a phenomenal job on the repair! As conspicuous as the difference in wood was, your hand work and choice of stain blended it right in. (Thank you for the tips on cleaning brass. I have been working on some pieces from India and gave up in frustration. Now I have a new method to try.)

Wow! This piece came out stunning! Your attention to detail, no matter how long it takes, turns your pieces into show pieces! I am currently working on a table with spinally legs and have to hand sand them. It is taking forever and over and over again you keep popping in my head saying “2000 years later”😂 I’m on year 1021 so I am getting there, lol. I wish I had the arsenal of tools you have, like your sand blaster. Boy that would make my project so much easier. Anyway - amazing work as always!

If you took fresh lemons and cut it into slices and then rub the brass with the lemon it will clean it much quicker and better.

Ahhh ... the decorative possibilities! Interchangeable centers for different seasons:
    Pumpkin
    Blueberry
    Strawberry
    Mincemeat
    ... 😊😂😂😂
Having said this, I do agree it is a piece of art (even without the "fillings") ... 😊

My mom had one exactly like this one...purchased in the early 1960's in the UK. Impossible to incorporate into the living room decor because it was so large. Difficult to keep clean/polished. She sold it in the late 1980's a yard sale for $50. Probably worth several $100's now.
