I'll admit, I was very skeptical about the potential results when I saw you rip out pieces of the inlay and shim the cracks instead of just using an epoxy or a filler, but the final results speak for themselves, and this project of yours yielded very satisfying fruits. Excellent work.
The reason trying to squeeze the gap shut didn't work is because the wood has not moved away, it has shrunk at a cellular level. It probably hadn't been completely dried or cured before working. Therefore adding more material to fill in the gap was the correct solution.

What an absolutely gorgeous table! I’ve never seen one so intricately inlaid and your choice of stain really highlights the brass. Bravo on a beautiful job! 😊
You picked the perfect stain for this particular piece. Dark enough to allow the metal inlay to shine, but not so dark that the contrast is jarring. Warm, too, to complement the warm tones of the metals as well.
On the contrary! It was a crime to ruin wonderful north Indian walnut (and a nice restoration) with a vivid mahogany dye. It is the duty of a competent restorer to remain faithful to the intentions and vision of the original maker. Mahogany is not indigenous to Hoshiarpur where this table was made. It is from a different continent entirely.
Amazing restoration! I’ve stripped and refinished a few pieces, nothing this intricate and it’s an incredibly hard job. You made this piece look so fantastic! Someone will love that piece for years to come, hopefully, they’ll be more careful than the last owners. That piece is a work of art! Great job on your part!
That is awesome how you restored that brass inlay table. The stain really highlights the brass inlays, making the table look so much better than before. Excellent work.
Thank you! I have a table just like this, from my late father, and it has a small stain, I will be able to repair it now. These tables are exquisite. ❤
If you use oxalic acid to lighten the stain, it's better to coat the entire top with the acid otherwise you might end up with a pale stain instead. Painting the entire top with the acid helps keep the bleaching effect more even while lightening the stained area.
