I confess when I saw the stain, I was disappointed because it had a red tone. But then I saw it with the inlays and it was perfect! So beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us.

I'll admit, I was very skeptical about the potential results when I saw you rip out pieces of the inlay and shim the cracks instead of just using an epoxy or a filler, but the final results speak for themselves, and this project of yours yielded very satisfying fruits. Excellent work.

    • @RasheedKhan-he6xx

The reason trying to squeeze the gap shut didn't work is because the wood has not moved away, it has shrunk at a cellular level. It probably hadn't been completely dried or cured before working. Therefore adding more material to fill in the gap was the correct solution.

On the contrary! It was a crime to ruin wonderful north Indian walnut (and a nice restoration) with a vivid mahogany dye. It is the duty of a competent restorer to remain faithful to the intentions and vision of the original maker. Mahogany is not indigenous to Hoshiarpur where this table was made. It is from a different continent entirely.

If you use oxalic acid to lighten the stain, it's better to coat the entire top with the acid otherwise you might end up with a pale stain instead. Painting the entire top with the acid helps keep the bleaching effect more even while lightening the stained area.

I fixed many of these types of wirework things in the past.Old arabic flintlocks, tables etc. Most of the time they want the original patina so apart from sprucing it up a bit and repairing the damage, thats all they wanted. I love the bold stain you put on it and it really shows up the brasswork.. The work these old craftsmen put into these things deserves to be seen in its full glory...

Your clan up on this table was beautiful. My grandparents had things similar to this they brought back from India post WW1.
They eventually were passed down to me so I did cleaning and repairs on them. Cleaning and polishing solid large
brass with coral inlay incense burners were my favorites. your table is so lovely, nice job!

So wonderful! This is beautiful! I began refinishing furniture at quite an early age, and the wood-work at our local library that had layers and layers of paint and then varnish underneath. It took forever to do that, I was only sixteen or seventeen at the time, but I found it very satisfying. I know how hard this kind of work is. I've got my great-great grandmother's table sitting here in the room with me, as solid as a rock. My grandmother refinished it herself in high school in the 1920s - it was old then! Now I think I might restore it again. Watching your show has given me the urge to do this work again. Thanks! Thank you for restoring these beautiful old pieces. I was sorry not to see any kitties this time!

Beautiful work! We should all try to restore and save old artwork like that little table! It's a piece of history, and the cost to build a new table with that level of artistic design would be huge.

Beautiful 😍😍😍 I love the cherry stain. I used it on my hardwood floors. I’m glad you could save such a wonderful piece of furniture. I never realized that it came apart like that for travel I’m assuming. It’s a cool piece 👍👍

Особенная вещь, с Арабского Востока, сделана для кочевой жизни, чтобы её можно было легко сложить и погрузить на вьюк. Тонкая работа, у вас замечательно получилось вернуть этой красоте прежний блеск и очарование.

My mother has two like this,we call them drum tables. Her center has a piece of carved green marble in each center. They are from Taiwan and we’re new in 1979.
