The original veneer was several book-match pieces of possibly a variety of woods. He may not have been able to get some to do the restoration. Regardless, he did nicely rescue this piece from the trash and return it to being a nice-looking, usable table again. That may also be why he opted for the very dark finish. Good job.

Waaaay too dark for the style and waaaay too glossy....Looks like plastic. Phillips screws covered with epoxy not really on for an antique. Finally the veneer stain was blotchy and looks a bit bumpy in spots. (Contact cement would have done a better job) Other than that good job or at least everyone else thinks so.

Amazing job! Personally I love the dark stain! You can still see just enough hints of the wood grain lines through the black, which adds an elegant, special feel to it. And I'm sure it looks even better in person! (considering camera lighting can be tricky regarding showing subtle details on dark, shiny surfaces)

Unlike others, I do not mind the dark stain. I feel that it gives the piece a sort of dark gothic appeal, especially with the ornate carving.
I have also seen older pieces stained that dark black walnut color. It was a trend once and it does suit this style. As I said before, I think it gives it a Gothic, Dark Academia vibe.
I was more interested in the veneer application.

This table is absolutely gorgeous! I love the legs of that period. But, I won't lie, I really wish you could have redone the walnut veneer in the same cross style that was original. I appreciate that it would be so much work but wouldn't it look even more amazing?!

Anyone who says the stain was too dark doesn't understand how difficult it is to color match stains on something this far gone. Dark stain or paint are really the only two options here.

Wow!You really like a challenge! That table looked pretty destroyed. I have a coffee table that is very similar to this one. The sides of the top are straight though. I refinished the top in a walnut stain, then painted the rest with a turquoise chalk paint. I highlighted some of the raised areas on the legs with some gold paint. I sealed it all with a water based poly. Several coats on the top. I just love it! When I bought it the top was scratched up and had some water stains. I bought it to redo though. I am not a professional. It was fun though! Your table turned out beautiful!

I would agree the color is alittle too dark in my furniture taste. But you saved this beautiful piece of furniture from a landfil, great job!
