I prefer first curtain for shutter dragging in a dark venue. (And I write this on New Years Eve so guess what I'm doing tonight?) Two main reasons - composition and moments. Often shots will appear and disappear just about as fast as you could read this sentence. If I'm rear-curtain it ups the possibility that I miss that moment because even if I fire on time, it might be gone by the time the flash pops. Composition - I want to get the shot framed and focused the way I want, fire off the flash to lock it in, *then* induce a bit of movement. Rear curtain is better for brighter venues. Either way works of course, so it's just personal preference.

Great comment! Really got me thinking. I was told second curtain about ten years ago and always used it on second, and I’m not sure why now that I think about it. I have used first curtain too, but always just went back to second as I thought that was the correct way to do it, but now, I’m not sure why that is 😂 I think because I don’t put a lot of movement in there, I’m always back to my composition point.
One thing I have always done though, is timed it with the music. Now I think about it, it’s probably second nature, but I trigger it so the flash lands on a beat, everyone dances to the beat, so the flash will fire as there’s action, once you feel the rhythm.
Sorry for such a long reply, appreciate your comment, thanks for getting me thinking about how I’m working too!

do you wait till for the flash then move the camera or do you move first before the flash?

When I use second curtain flash, I move the camera first, and then the flash fires at the end

Why don't you show some photos samples? Majority of the video is a talking head.

Good question, Just out of respect for the people I photograph! It’d be different if I was hiring models to get examples of this.
