I figured this comparison would lean HEAVILY toward the Honda. The comment section is like a survey and it shows the public perception of reliability between Honda and VW. Pretty cool to read though and see your thoughts. Thanks to all that participated 👍
I bought 2021 VW Atlas Cross Sport, engine is from Germany and transmission is from Japan. Honda dealers added 5000 on Pilot and Passport, VW offer 3500 off from MSRP. I paid 1800 for extend warranty to make sure peace of mind until 100000 miles. I am previous owner of 2012 Sienna, the air condition is broken after 8 years and paint fade. So I give VW a try and so far so good.
VW engine is Germany and the transmission Japanese !I have VW Atlas SEL premium RLine and I love it is only 17k miles, If I get new lease VW!, If I decide to buy... Honda! ( and also buy used car- Honda as well ) But trust me, I lover my black atlas, now cost 24659.00 end of the lease and market price is 39-42k ... crazy right! Should I buy it??
Never ever ever buy a used German vehicle my mechanic once told me unless of course you are a mechanic with deep pockets. I love them to death for their looks handling and ride quality but have to give the nod to the Japanese brands for reliability. I just bought a 2022 Pilot Sport which was $2000 under MSRP and 1.9% 48 months financing. Sure, it's ugly and outdated but it has that smooth V6 engine and awesome 9 speed tranny. Ironically the transmission is a German design I believe. AWD and $39k was a no brainer. Got a little bit off topic sorry my choice would be the Honda for sure.
* VW, Audi recall SUVs for potential engine failure * Volkswagen recalls 246,000 Atlas SUVs due to issue with airbags, brakes I think Honda won this one hands down.
all I had to hear was Honda vs VW. You need plenty of money when the VW breaks, Honda parts much easier and cheaper to get. VWs are great when under warranty.
had a Tiguan. timing bet/chain went out at 80,000 miles $3200 14 months later went out again Junked it. (12 month warranty. vw with 100K in the junkyard. Never heard of a dead Honda at 100K
Honda for me. BTW, if a 2nd or 3rd row bench is noted as a 3 passenger bench seat, then why is there only 2 headrests? Seriously, don’t say the bench seat can house 3 people across but don’t have an extra headrest for that person. For safety reasons, there should be a headrest.
@@wojo31483 sorry I wasn't talking about the Honda. Take a look at the Chevy Tahoe, 3rd row. It's supposed to seat up to 3 people. Where's the head restraint for the person sitting in the middle?
@@DaveBsellsChevy sorry I wasn't talking about Honda. The Tahoe is supposed to sit 3 across in the 3rd row, correct? Where's the middle head restraint? Am I missing it?
VW: Why is price so high? ($37.5): My local dealer has many (24) new Atlases in stock. And Is offering about $2k off of sticker on line for all. So for between $3k and $9k more (depending on equipment) you can get a new 2022 (with a V6 and AWD) vs 2018 with 70k miles.
Not sure, seemed high to me as well but in our market area I guess that is the going rate. I know local VW dealer here is over MSRP on the few they have... (based on what a client here mentioned to me).... Used car market has climbed very close to new car numbers in the last few months.. Our Traverses are the same way. You can get a new one for a few thousand more than a used but there is a 3 to 4 month wait. At this moment the factory is actually closed due to lack of parts
Don’t want to be difficult but a new vehicle that was 48 thousand dollars and after 4 years asking 37 thousand dollars is a no starter for me. Quality and mileage wise I’d pick the Honda, heard some real nightmare stories about VW quality and service. But I’d probably keep what I have, those prices will drop like a rock when the other foot drops and the economy goes on life support. I do find these comparisons informative and hope we can see more in the future.
Here’s something to think about, safety ratings, I crashed in my VW going 70mph, I hydroplaned into the concrete wall on the interstate and skid across 3 lanes of traffic and ended up between the right travel lane and the on ramp, not only did I survive the crash, I only had one abrasion on my hand and was able to walk to the ambulance under my own power
I’d take the VW all day every day. Looks a million times better, higher quality body panels. The Honda sounds hollow and cheap while the VW is solid and feels like a tank when you close a door. On the inside of the VW looks higher end than the Honda.
Recently bought VW and only reach 10k miles the coolant got low because it’s leaking they need to replace it and they said that normal because the other Atlas have the same issue. It still under warranty thanks god but when the warranty is out who know what will happen next.
@@kennybrooks8374 I’m so happy to hear. Been looking into Atlas recently, since our first choice (Sienna) is nearly impossible to get, and the Atlas is quite spacious. Only thing i noticed is that VW has stripped the BSM from many trims, but other than that (and possibly reliability), the Atlas seems like a winner. Thanks again for sharing your insights 🙏
I only had to watch the first 35 seconds of this video before deciding. The Honda. Another easy one, Dave :) VWs are simply not as reliable. When I buy a vehicle, I plan on keeping it for at least 10 years. That makes this decision an easy one. Pilots can run forever.
Been using a vw golf since 2016 0 issues haven’t even changed the clutch plate in a MT after 170K kms its just you need to baby a German a little more than a Japanese
I would choose the Honda Pilot. I don’t know much about VW suv. I had someone who gotten a Honda Pilot and a lot of people recommend those vehicle. I test drove the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and I like the way it drives and the controls was little tricky. I am hopefully I will come to my decision of which 3rd row SUV’s I would go for.
I went through this decision last year. I went with the Atlas. Still feel I made the right choice. Drove several examples of each. The Atlas is bigger and by a pretty significant margin and more comfortable.
I have been rocking a 2019 Atlas since… 2019. The few short Pilot experiences that I have would have me convinced that I made the right choice. I’m open for debate though.
The Honda will go 300K miles. The VW won’t. The V6 in the Honda has been in production since 1985 when it was introduced in the Acura legend in 1985 and subsequently in the Honda Accord in 1995. The VW is plagued with problems including the infotainment system and drivetrain. The Honda is worth any premium over the VW. Buyer beware with the Atlas.
I love that you do your research and know all about both vehicles before your present them. For me the choice is the Atlas. They are both well matched so for me it literally comes down to styling and I prefer the looks of the Atlas.
I think at the end of the day, the average person that would look at either of these cars are the 'domesticated' dads buying them for their dumpy wives with a couple kids. And that's not a bad thing! For most commuters, a car is an appliance. And these are appliances more than cars. Sometimes I just want to eat McDonald's for lunch. I know it's crap food, but it's easy and resembles real food. THAT is who these SUVs are marketed to and that's why they sell.
Honda 1st choice, Honda 2nd choice, followed by Honda for last choice. Proven reliability .. even if the Honda had higher mileage, it would still by far be the better buy.
My parents have a ‘12 pilot with over 250k on it and no issues so far. I’ve known many people with VWs that had nothing but issues with them. Honda for sure for me.
It's VW Atlas for me, my sister in law has a pilot and I have the atlas, the atlas drives, handles and stops much better. The pilot may last longer but my VW has 40k and no issues yet.

Honda. Reliability.
Honda. Just on reliability reputation
Honda for sure
Honda no question
Honda. German made vehicles are headaches to repair; even for an independent mechanic that specializes in foreign cars.

Sounds good to me. With the extended warranty you won't have any financial responsibility even if something did go wrong. Enjoy your VW 👍
The Honda look ok now all of that
Honda… just because of the reputation of reliability.
HONDA THEY HAVE A GREAT BRAND

Honda any day over a VW. Reliability and will last longer.
As presented, the Honda because of the lower mileage and the likely lower cost of maintenance and repairs. Brand new? The VW.
