Touring does not have ventilated seats or power folding mirrors, The Elite adds those plus heated steering wheel, panaromic moon roof, auto windshield wipers, please do your homework before making a comparison video,
Great video but one big flaw: the Acura’s headlights outperform the Honda’s by far. Jewel eyes have far superior optics and actually have lenses. Current Honda LEDs are a simple reflector design, producing tons of glare and less useful light down the road (raise your hand if drive a Honda and pissed someone that thought you had your high beams on!) I’d give a point to Acura on that one.
I did this exact comparison with the 2018 models last year. Acura was our choice in the end because our kids are older. For toddlers Honda would be a better choice. The leather is thicker and seems more solid in that regard, but the Acura is much much more refined and comfortable.
Agreed. If we had younger kids the Pilot wins. Older teenagers, MDX wins all day. It's so much more manuevarable than the Pilot and much more comfortable as long as you get the 18 inch wheels.
own a 2010 MDX Advace package and I absolutely love it!! just hit 120K miles and it runs like new!!! no comparison can be made with the SH-AWD, especially in the snow, ice and going around curves at greater than 70mph on the highway. proud and satisfied owner 😊👍btw, continuously getting asked to sell by the dealer and friends, as these are in high demand....
Nice comparison, but as an owner of both (since new) : 2015 MDX & 2016 Pilot, I consider myself qualified to make the verdict, I’ve been riding both of these cars back to back on daily basis and make a long trips on both too; The MDX is the better choice most of the time, The Honda have a little roomier cabin ( with a bigger glass all around for better visibility) and a little better off-road capability, nothing more. Don’t get me wrong, the Pilot is a superb crossover, but the MDX is more superior as a driver car. Every time I hop into the MDX -coming from the Pilot- I wonder how come these two crossovers are almost identical but they deliver in very different way!... I love my Pilot, but I cannot resist the fun to drive factor of the MDX!
I went for a 19 MDX Adv Sport Hybrid. Very sporty, very good performance, great handing, and mpgs in the 24-26 range for city/combined/hwy. The Sport Hybrid powertrain of 3.0L engine, 3 electric motors, 7DCT, electronic dampers, regen braking+tq vectoring, and Sport+ mode is unique to Acura MDX, RLX, and NSX.
I test drive both the 2019 Pilot and MDX. The MDX felt more premium and drove better. The one thing that drove me away from the Pilot is it has no arm rest and felt real weird not being able to rest my right arm for a shot trip never mind long trip. It sounds simple but was extremely noticeable when driving the Pilot. I went with a 2019 MDX with advanced package. Love it!
Thank you for making this video! I test drove these both back to back and I'm glad I'm not crazy cuz I kept thinking these are identical but the pilot definitely has more room
The MDX looks SOOOOOO much better than the Pilot. The huge styling advantage alone would be enough for me to justify the price difference. The Acura's seats are much nicer too. The Pilot looks frumpy. The MDX looks sweet!
I like the Pilot because I like that it has more leg room and head room. The third row can hold three people instead of two. The dash broad is set up better and looks nicer. You get more for your buck as well. One thing I don’t like in any SUV is how they are all starting to look like mini vans. If I wanted a mini van I would purchase a mini van.. I want a SUV and I want it to look like a SUV...
Although I love his videos I like the way his other comparisons are where the whole thing has both vehicles on screen at the same time for the entire video.
Acura looks just like a Honda on the inside. For a luxury brand, they need to work on standing out more. Otherwise it should just have an H badge on it.
Interesting to read that when reviewer stated though the Acura has very nice leather and wood trim, the Honda has: better instrumentation, better GPS, less confusing accessory controls, panoramic roof, more third row depth and head room, more cargo storage, the Acura doesnt have 3rd row vents (stupid idea) and you only get 10more HP which means worse gas mileage real world. This isnt 2014 Acura XD
Personally i think everyone would say Acura looks better even has LED turn signals also the drive its quieter and smoother but even with these in mind you just proved to me Pilot is better utility wise which is the purpose of an SUV if Acura would just update the infotainment system i think it would be def worth the extra $10k cmon whats up with my brand
I bought the pilot because it is more affordable and it’s more a family car than the DMX . More room interior and I’m very happy with the design performance and durability.
Hopefully they put the changes into the MDX that they put into the RDX this year. Having said that, if Honda simply made the Pilot look like the MDX, they would completely dominate the HIghlander, CX-9 and anything else in that space.
It would make sense the pilot is more up to date right now since it was redesigned last year. The mdx is a 4 year old model and is set for a new version next year. How can you compare a luxury brand like Acura versus a Honda that is meant for functionality
@@theyadmire-backup3500 steve, it may be unfair to compare them, but im a consumer looking for luxury mid-size sedans. I would only go with the camry if I was looking for reliability, but im a driver looking to have a car less than 10 years and i think the accord can easily manage that.
@@ProVishGaming given the TLX's age and slow sales, you can negotiate an AWD Tech model for similar to the MSRP of an Accord 2.0T Touring. Makes for tough decisions! AWD dated Acura vs. FWD fresh Honda.
@@ProVishGaming Give it a few more months and the 2nd generation TLX will be out as a 2020 model. Will very likely be similar to the '19 RDX which is quite nice.
The Pilot weighs over 600 lbs more than the Acura and there fore doesn't accelerate or handle as well. The Honda doesn't meet the federal fuel milage standards where my Acura made 29.5 miles per gallon traveling from Texas to Ogden Utan for Spike 150 a distance of over 2500 miles . That includes driving the plains of Texas a nd NM, and steep 7 + degree grades near Silverton and the grades climbing over the passes into Spanish fork. I maintained over 30 mpg while driving the front range at 80 mph from Spanish fork to Oden and return. The Acura is the first gasoline powered vehicle I have owned that exceeded fuel milage standards. It handles much better than a pilot on wining roads and climbs grades more easily. The Acura is 5 db quieter, too as at 75 mph according to my Precisicion Sound level meter. The exhaust resonance of a Pilot is also more irritating. As for the sound system, if she can't hear the difference I sorry for her. Acura is better.
02 mdx is really nice to drive. i did move A entire house in that suv only one thing I couldn't fit in it was my basketball hoop. I also put 8 to 10 sheetrock & close the back & about 5 plywood and leave the back open i have dragging vibration between 3rd and 4th gear on a slow acceleration its been going on for 7 years. Almost everybody who has an MDX has the problem &some peple have transmission issues u can drive the mdx all day you don't get tired
Why all auto reviewers used the most expensive trim for comparison which most would not buy. Both models came fully equipped (AWD) and enough for most buyers. I would buy either at the lowest prices: Pilot: $34,000. MDX: $46,000. AS one could see, there were more than $10,000 difference from the top model.
Awesome reviewing, but must be noted that wealthy people most times have less children and sometimes bring their friends in same vehicles, but want the ability to.
@carconfections you forget to mention the mdx came out in 2014 while the pilot debut in 2016 so of course the tech in the pilot is going to be ahead of the mdx. Including the panoramic roof the infortainment system and etc.
Pj gaulding the front number and rear number of the mdx was refresh it still the same chassis tech and etc from 2014 when the suv first came out. As I said the pilot came out in 2016 while the mdx came out in 2014 so Honda was able to put new technology in the pilot when it came out. But the mdx would go into its 5th gen soon. P.s
Not fair rating. Both are great vehicles for different markets. The only draw back I see on the RDX is the instrument cluster and entertainment system.
No bad choices between the two. It's just a matter of prioritizing utility versus sport. I will say that the MDX is about two years older than the Pilot; hence the Pilot is based on the MDX not vice versa. Jon Ikeda has indicated that the Acura brand will go into a more premium and markedly sportier direction in upcoming generations with the new RDX being the first of this new breed.
I Have owned a gen 2 MDX for many trouble free years @ over 240k miles now. (it’s on my you tube channel btw). Will be upgrading when the new generation arrives but will still keep my gen 2. @AutoFixEZ
So does anyone have any new information on the 2020 Acura MDX or it's release date? I think it's going to get a major interior update that is more inline with the RDX. What do you guys think?
The AWD system in the Pilot is virtually an SHAWD unit. The LED’s in the Pilot are just reflectors and not projectors, which are in every way inferior.

The MDX already has the Odyssey's V6 with 10 more horsepower. I agree though, that it needs the new 10spd auto and a similar '19 RDX interior. Next generation MDX will be out in 2020 as a '21 model year. Should be out summer of '20. Will likely have a version of Acura's upcoming turbo 6 cylinder engine. Ought to be a really hot vehicle.
To not take into account exterior styling for the MDX is ridiculous, in particular the new Aspec model is a vastly more attractive car and also interior.
It's the engineering that makes the biggest difference, it seems that you blew over that all pretty quickly. Honda doesn't even come close to how the Acura drives.
You do know the engines and transmissions are the same, right? Like exactly. You do know, with some rare exceptions, that an Acura is simply a Honda with luxury badging, right?
BabyCatandFifi Looks like not. I don’t get the Honda hate from people who prefer Acura. At least Toyota and Nissan are trying (emphasis on trying) harder to distinguish their “luxury” brand from their “commoners” brand. Whereas Honda is barely giving a face lift to its base range and slaps a Acura badge. But to each its own. I like my 2020 Pilot, it suits my needs. I understand other people with other needs will prefer the Acura (style or amenities or what not). But saying that they drive totally differently... yes, the Acura should be sportier somehow. But we’re talking about 3 rows SUV here. Give me a break. 😅
@@Platycqb Acura is not a luxury brand, but rather Honda's premium brand. Lexus is a luxury brand from Toyota. Infiniti is almost between Acura and Lexus - more premium than Acura but less luxury than Lexus, IMO.
I think this is more of an appearance and physical comparison. This review doesn’t compare what you can’t see physically. Like sh-awd, adaptive dampers, acc with low speed, driving dynamics, refinement, handling, 9speed dct etc. Jewel eyes on the MDX was designed with a purpose, the ones on the Pilot are LED but not Jewel eyes. Overall the MDX is a much better and upscaled SUV and the pilot is slightly a bigger practical SUV.
Hi. Great review. Do these engines still use cylinder deactivation? On the Acura information center, is that crunchy like a rice crispies treat, or more like a fried pork skin? 😬😂🤪
The infotainment is actually better than a touchscreen and safer once you get over the learning curve. You should be using the voice operation 9/10 times anyway plus the dual screen setup has many merits in daily use. The learning curve was 1 year for me ... Which is too long for most people to commit to I agree... But I like it better than my Tesla now (giant screen). Now that I've memorized the MDX scroll wheel I can use it without looking. Touchscreen require you to look away and generally can't be operated without being distracted.
One major difference is adaptive cruise control The Acura has low speed follow while the pilot does not and it will turn off cruise control below 25 MPH which makes it useless in traffic!
The pilot’s iVTM-4 awd system is almost identical to the Acura SH-AWD. Although tuned less aggressively it can still send 70% of power to the rear and torque vector that power 100% to either rear wheel. I think that should be made a bit more clear in such a comparison. Cheers,
Scott One please outline the mechanical differences you speak of. Other than different tuning for more aggressive performance I cannot find any mechanical differences between Acura SH-AWD & iVTM-4
Leather seats are the worst. Very uncomfortable. I have a 2016 RDX and I hate the seats. Moon roof is a complete waste too. I'll be getting a Pilot next year with out a doubt.
Bottom line MDX leases out better then a Pilot ELITE. MDX longer warranty, and has better looks then pilot. It’s also nice to have a loaner car available when service is required on the Acura vs sitting on hard plastic waiting hours for an oil change at a Honda. Dealer. At the end of the day the 10K higher price for MDX does not matter when most MDX are leased.
5,000 pound towing - 80 % = 4,000 for Camper trailer and 1,000 LBS for inside of truck mean 210 me 150 wife 70 son = 430 LBS -1000= only 570 LBS for play
Muito bom os comparativos de carros da que seguem a mesma linha mas,... E por falar nisso de que estado do EUA vocês são ... Eu sou da capital Brasília, Brasil ... valeus...

Pilot is a smarter buy today, but hopefully the next-gen MDX will address the obvious dated dash/infotainment and lacking features.

MDX for me!
Lol 😂
Just wait for 2021 type S MDX!
Was that rust on that acura's gas cap area
The infotainment system need a huge update since the old dual screen is already been used for over 5 years. Single screen will be easier to control.
Great comparison!!!
At 5:20 you can see rust on the mdx fuel door hinge.
Looks like grease. Obviously not rust.
Small issue
One major difference is adaptive cruise control
The Acura has low speed follow while the pilot does not and it will turn off cruise control below 25 MPH which makes it useless in traffic!
Pilot is unnecessarily higher in price, Highlander is far better option with less price..... but MXD is superb
Highlander gives you a ton less in the lower trims than the Pilot for more money. Also, the 3rd row is a coffin.
I’d take the Pilot. Looks more like a SUV.
A fairer comparison would be the Honda Elite and the MDX Tech. That's a three thousand dollar difference not a ten thousand dollar difference.
The pilot’s iVTM-4 awd system is almost identical to the Acura SH-AWD. Although tuned less aggressively it can still send 70% of power to the rear and torque vector that power 100% to either rear wheel. I think that should be made a bit more clear in such a comparison. Cheers,
Uh no, apples and oranges in engineering and capability.
Scott One please outline the mechanical differences you speak of. Other than different tuning for more aggressive performance I cannot find any mechanical differences between Acura SH-AWD & iVTM-4

No pano for the MDX, Pano in the elite pilot which is a deal breaker for some.
Clearly the Pilot is the better pick, practicality wise.
Of course . Honda pilot is better. Acura is just made to complete with Lexus. But unfortunately it s fail. Lexus won.
U should do Infiniti QX60 vs Nissan Pathfinder
i guess i would just like for Acura to make another coupe...my kids are grown now, lol
Gee....I can't believe the MDX vintage 2010 infotainment system was awarded zero points vs the Pilot's newer updated system.😏😏😏
Everyone knows that the MDX is a better vehicle, but is it worth the extra cost?
Honda Pilot 🤩🤩🤩
5,000 pound towing - 80 % = 4,000 for Camper trailer and 1,000 LBS for inside of truck mean
210 me
150 wife
70 son
= 430 LBS -1000=
only 570 LBS for play
I like the pilot better
Of the two I like the Pilot better, but for Uber I'd go with the MDX to get the better pay.
Muito bom os comparativos de carros da que seguem a mesma linha mas,... E por falar nisso de que estado do EUA vocês são ... Eu sou da capital Brasília, Brasil ... valeus...
