Just bought the MDX advance, got $7.5k off MSRP and Honda elite had dealer markup of $3-4k. So the price diff was under $1k. Lol. Went with MDX, no brainer.
To add. MDX was 2023 model, no diff with 2024. $6.5k dealer discount and $1k incentive.
Great job on the price! Wow! The only thing that would sway me to the Pilot would be if I need the size. Congratulations!!!
That’s a great deal! I was able to get my Pilot Elite at msrp and I needed the size. Otherwise the MDX is a great car, just more of a big 2 row with an emergency 3rd row.
Nice deal!
Good deal. I was between both and at the time, MDX was way over MSRP and overpriced add-ons. Pilot Elite at MSRP
My wife and I compared Sienna (crazy markup and subpar interior), Odyssey (meh interior), Highlander (see Sienna), RX350 (superior in everyway except interior room and price), Atlas (subpar in every way), Telluride (polarizing interior design), and Pilot. Combine price, amenities, qualities, design, ergonomics, Pilot won by a long shot. Especially the elite vs other top model trims. On top of that, with the NA V6, I know its projected reliability will be top notch.
If you care about driving experience & ride quality then get dmx. If you care about space & convenient then Pilot. I went with the Mdx, it's literally one of the best handling big suv out there
I test drove the MDX recently. The steering wheel was super light and the heading was out of this world! The interior is a little tight is the only downside other wise it’s worth the asking price.
I agree with you. My wife and I bought 2022 MDX and we love it!! They made a lot of improvements compared to the 2020 model. The ride is much better and the audio system is awesome!!!
I actually heard the DMX had ruff ryde quality.
@@romer15cool well you heard wrong lol. Ride quality on the MDX is Superb. Just go test drive and see for yourself.
Totally agree! When you get to a certain price point, you might as well get what you want. Why spend 5 grand less and be stuck with something you felt you settled for for. My wife was quite content with me getting her the 2023 RDX in January, but I hated the taillights. I was not going to spend over 40 grand, likely closer to 50 grand for something I didn't like. Instead, I spent nearly 20 grand more and got her the MDX with all her options, all over taillights. The same feeling I get when I look at the Pilot and the MDX...Sure, it might also depend on your use for the vehicle, but heck if I am going to fork over more than 50 grand for a Pilot, I might as well spend the extra and get me a better looking SUV. The Pilot is not bad looking, but anyone can see the MDX is superior looking, and the drive is phenomenal. My wife was scared of a large SUV after being behind the wheels of some we tested, but she LOVED the feel of the MDX. I am in the DC region, and I have yet to see another MDX with the bodyside and tailgate moldings we optioned for. So, for at least now, the mrs is looking pretty special on the road.😊
I compared these two recently when I was deciding on my purchase for a 3 row family suv. I went with the Pilot Elite for the much bigger 3rd row, touchscreen infotainment, $12k cheaper price for similar feature set, lower maintenance cost, and lower gas cost.
Compared to all other 3 row midsize SUVs, the Pilot Elite hit all the things I wanted more than the other options. Big 3rd row for even adults (I carry around adult family members a lot), touch screen infotainment, wireless Apple CarPlay, and reliable. Korean twins came close but no wireless CarPlay and questionable reliability. Grand Highlander is marked up like crazy and I don’t love the 4 cylinder turbo. Everything else was significantly smaller in the 3rd row and had more reliability concerns.
You wouldn't be buying either of these if you were worried about gas prices.
@@mrsj1417 you could if all the other aspects of the car fits your needs.
Test drove the Crv Hybrid sport and Pilot Elite. The room is nice but those sound like an empty tin can at highway speeds. Lots of wind and road noise and the NA V6 struggles for the pilot. Ended up with a MDX type S advance
@@CraigPalario I didn’t find noise levels too high and the V6 is peppy enough for a family suv. You wanted a sporty suv, that’s what the type s is for. Also way more expensive.
Went with the Palisade. Would have done the Pilot, but the infotainment screen was tiny. Loved the MDX, but being forced to use that awkward track pad was a deal breaker. Why they can't have a touchscreen as well is beyond me.
I’ve been waiting for this comparison - thanks for making it!
I like the exterior look of the MDX more. Honda’s exterior doesn’t look fancy or special, in my opinion. Just another boxy suv. However, I do like having more space. This is a tough one.
Thank you for doing this comparison, these two are in my top three for family SUV (older kids, wouldn't likely use the 3rd row but want the cargo space you get when the 3rd row is folded into the floor.)
Thanks for the video. Just got the 2023 pilot black edition. Am loving it at every single moment.
Great video - No bias which I'm sure a lot of us appreciate. I cross-shopped both of these and ended up with a 23 MDX. I got very lucky and scored 10% off of MSRP. That said, I valued the design and aesthetics of the MDX well over the Pilot. While I do agree for a family hauler, the Pilot makes a lot more sense, I felt that if I were to compromise, it would end up being more of a regret. Very happy with my new ride so far.
Thanks!
I share the same sentiment here. Pilot and MDX were my top two choices. I went with the 2023 MDX. The ride quality was significantly better (subjective viewpoint) on the MDX. The ride and steering felt more nimble compared to the Pilot Elite. The ELS sound system on the MDX is just amazing. Am also happy with my 23 MDX so far.
Impressive video and thoroughly covered!
Thank you!! I've been waiting for this for a long time!!
Just bought our 3rd MDX Advanced today. We just love them.
I choose the Pilot Elite due to the amount of space and easy just right touchscreen system.
Under the hood is the same and driving experience is almost near identical.
Pilot is the more sensible option.
Thanks for the comparison guys.
The Pilot IS a great vehicle, but the ride quality IS different. Take them on a snake road....the difference will be immediate in their handling.
Why will.i do that? Drive slowly
Love the work you guys put in to these videos. Thanks!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
I compared these two and went with Pilot touring. At 6’3 260 lbs I’ve been wanting a large SUV for years. The Pilot just gave me the larger suv feel, especially in the rear seat.
Fantastic comparison as always!
Thanks again!
Of these two, my choice would be Acura, because it has better sound insulation, a premium interior, and a longer warranty
The most comprehensive review I watched yet. Thank you.
I hope You had mentioned the cornering performance I mean the SHAWD. I think I missed that part.
I will subscribe your channel Now. Adios
Glad it was helpful and welcome to the Car Confections family!
You didn’t mention that the Pilot front suspension is McPherson struts vs the MDX double wishbone.
At a $10K difference in price between the two, it's not surprising the Acura would have more premium features. But I agree, the Pilot has more functionality. I considered an MDX but ended up with the Pilot Elite. The resale value is better and one major reason was the MDX demand for premium fuel, which is not an insignificant difference in annual operating costs. You claim premium fuel is not necessary for the MDX, but that's what they recommend.
good review work 🤝🤝
Thank you 👍
Great video. Both are great SUVs.
U guys continue to go above and beyond the other reviewers with decibel test and audio samples both important imo
Thank you, friend 😁
Great review as always guys! Better scenery than New Circle Rd too! 😂.
You got that right! 😂 Thanks!
Just got a 2024 MDX Type S Advance. Replaced a Mercedes GLE350, the MDX drives much nicer, really impressed with the quality features
Great people great videos.
Can you please do 2023 Nissan Rogue vs Toyota RAV4 or Mazda CX-6? Thank you, I loved to see your channel grow so much ❤
Noted!
The Pilot is more family focused - more storage bins, including better door cards, and other little details I can't think of right now. Agreed that the MDX is still what I would choose. The lack of 3rd row vents in the MDX is puzzling, plus both of them take the cheap way out putting the HVAC for the 2nd row on the center console instead of overhead where they (arguably) help cool occupants off more quickly.
Acura figured out that riders sitting in third row do not need to breath, they just stop breathing and listening to the great sound from their premium speaker blah blah blah !! No AC vent in third row is the only reason I never upgrade my 2014 Acura MDX!
You're right it's puzzling why Acura engineers do not see the need of third row vent (they said 75-80% owners drive Acura MDX without riders in the 3rd row ,,,YES that is how dump their reason excuses not to have vent in 3rd row hahaha !)
Well let's watch carefully to see what happens with the 2024 and/or 2025 model year ('25 should bring a refresh I think.) @@jpthsd
It's stunning to me that the MDX STILL doesn't have climate vents for 3rd row passengers. I'm trying to think of a single other family SUV without that
I wish I had seen this before buying my Acura MDX Advance model. Not that I don't love it, as I really thought I was going to buy the Pilot Elite model but I couldn't make a connection with my local dealership. They wouldn't follow up on my request, too bad for them. My new 2024 Acura is exactly like the one shown in this video! It is sweet and I love it so very much!!!! Also, I have a 2016 Elite and the road noise comparison is amazing. My new MDX is super quiet on the road...
You forgot to talk about the suspension and it makes a huge difference in driving
I have 2024 MDX ASpec and coming from Honda past 8 years. If money is not the issue get MDX you will not regret i m giving you word!!!
Best handling SUV as far as price tag , amazing machine for ride, comfort, family needs, luxury and fun.
Im debating on the MDX Type S or Pilot Elite… but I want the extra space and touchscreen system plus the price difference is significant.
Pitot definitely much more practical if you have big family. I love my pilot, but before purchasing consider MDX also.
We have the 2022 redesign MdX and the only reason I waited was they started to separate them to the pilot this new gen and worth the change and upgrade from CRV. Its not like a nice pilot for mdx or crv for rdx or accord with the TLX. We like the mdx ride and lexury feels.
Why not Lexus then
@@JoeTryn Lexus are always having tight cabin space and for the price you get more of an Acura than Lexus. Lexus always wanted you to upgrade and cost you more unlike Acura which mostly standard features. Performance are both good but the Acura SH AWD is the one that Honda perfected for yrs and gave you stability in road. The new gen are more planted and I already push it and it live to its design. I drove the RX and it feels higher in ground and uncomfortable when you push its limit. I had sports coupe 86 and MK5 and the feels are closer with MDX eventhough the size difference.
Pilot all the way !!! For the money it’s a no brainer .
Saw one of the pilot snd i was very impressed
Hi there. At the very beginning of your video, you're driving a Honda. Can you tell me what type of car is it? Thank you.
Compared lease deals between a new 2024 MDX Technology package and a Pilot Trail sport. MDX is over 100 dollars cheaper a month with same down. I think they are discounting the MDX's to clear inventory for the new model. No brainer im getting the MDX.
Pilot Elite for me, as I like CUV's with SUV looks. Truly, it doesn't matter which one goes with. Honda gets the 💰 💸 anyway.
You get what you pay for. The MDX feels more solid, well built, premium and more luxurious.
Love the V6 vs a 4cyl turbo.
Looks alone swayed us to get the MDX.
Is it true the MDX 2nd row mid seat is removable? This is a HUGE factor to my consideration.
my friend got a MDX with $5000 off MSRP. considering if the Pilot requires a markup. they could be sold at the same price range. so what do you buy in this case?
Depends if you need more space or not. That’s the main difference. If space doesn’t matter, just make sure you can get used to the touchpad infotainment on the MDX and be ready for higher maintenance costs. If that’s all okay, go for the MDX. But if you need a family hauler, the Pilot Elite will do it much better.
Neither has natural Captain's Chairs...the Pilot you have to go down to the Trailridge trim for that....MDX has the middle seat which can be removed...so looking like Grand Highlander Platinum for me
I beg to differ! My 23 Pilot touring has a sport mode option. I definitely feel like I’ve been transported to a sports car when I engage it. Lol😅
Great comparison guys and Thank you 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching!
Regarding the outside rear view mirrors, are the kind that tilt downwards when you put the vehicle in reverse (so you can see the curb better) just not available on any of these family 3-row SUVs? I know it has a 360 camera, so maybe that's the reason this type of mirrors aren't seen that much...?
My Pilot Elite has that tilt feature. Not sure about the MDX Advanced but I’m assuming it has it.
@@brett233 Excellent - it's not something I see called out (very often?) in the Pilot reviews. Maybe one reviewer mentioned it? On the other hand I'm not great at remembering what each person included in their review.
@@jsfbay1 I don’t remember it being mentioned but it could have slipped past me too lol
@@brett233 2022 MDX tech has the down tilt rear view mirrors, they can be disabled by placing the rear view mirror 'switch' in the center position
That reverse tilt mirror feature is even available on Honda Ridgeline Pickup Truck at least the top RTL-E trim. So even on previous Pilot had this.
Giving the Pilot five points for pricing is silly. Why not give the MDX five points for luxury appointments? Or five points for prestige?
Prestige? Are you serious?
Over the years and owning both the Pilot and MDX, there is one thing you need for your testing. That is working with the service center and how you are treated. Having worked with both and are owned by the same group, I can tell you Acura is better to work with.
i know there is a big price differance but i would still choose a volvo xc90 incription
Please review the base models more! Some people actually buy them! 😊
Tops on my list-same color and interior!
Side cargo windows on the Pilot look like an afterthought. Badging on front grills to LARGE
Can you guys do the Hyundai Palisade vs genesis gv80? I don’t know which one to pick.
Like most luxury counterparts, the GV80 is MUCH smaller inside
@@brett233Agreed, I was shocked at how small the cargo area is.
@@brett233As well the Genesis is much better at everything else. Better ride, suspension, interior quality, stereo system. Nordstrom vs. Kohls.
I've owned Acuras and driven a Pilot. There is no way to compare them. The Acura is in the PRO series that would put the Pilot in Little League. My Acuras drove like a Porsche and could exceed 160 MPH. I haven't driven an MDX, I drove Legends.
Why in the world Acura recommends premium fuel is annoying. I’ve had 6 Acuras and never ran premium and never had an issue
Premium gives more HP, at least In my supercharged audi sq5.
For the models they reviewed, i feel pilot is a better deal. Acura dont even have touch screen. How are you suposed adjust the knob when driving? Also pilot is roomier. Engine is pretty much the same. For extra 10k, you are not getting much back. If power matters, might as well pay another 10k for the model s which gives you 355 hp. But thats 73k, still not a touch screen. I would buy pilot. I know only about 6 decibel difference. Just more practical and more room. I dont know if you really need that much power for these big cars, comfortability is the priority.
We love our mdx but it does cost more to fix if something is wrong then the Honda
My only gripe with the MDX(or the DMX as someone called it 😂) is the touch pad infotainment center. I know at some point this was considered to be a thing, but even BMW is getting rid of them.
I don’t know which one I would pick
My winner is the MDX...Looks do matter😂😂😂
Could you please do a video on comparison between Toyota grand highlander and Lexus TX ?
They’re exactly the same 😂. Just like comparing a Chevy traverse to a Buick enclave or Cadillac xt6. They’re literally identical to each other in every single way. Nothing to differentiate the nicer version from the lesser version
@naveenthemachine well pilot and mdx are the same and he did a comparison. So why not for grand highlander vs lexus
@@fakedazzlefulisnt the mdx riding on a bespoke platform?
@@fakedazzleful I saw the comparison in other 2-3 channels but not as good and comprehensive as this channel. Hope they do the comparison video.
@yanntam6451 different platform or not. The mdx only win because of high quality and more power. There's literally no different. So i don't see why Car Connections shouldn't do a video if the fans want to see it
Do you know when MDX will get the Pilot's DOHC V6? It's inevitable but oddly hasn't happened yet.
Hopefully not.
The Pilot is DOHC, but the MDX has VTEC.
@@ryanb8736 Why not? The new DOHC has a broader torque curve. If you're sad about V-Tec going away, I get it, but V-Tec is obsolete now with the DOHC.
Not in love with the points for price. For example, an X7 would get killed in this comparison but the X7 and the Pilot aren’t comparable.
Went with 2024 mdx
Do you know when Grand Highlander will enter the reviewer's fleet such that you'll get one for a week? I hope it's soon!
I'm not sure but we will definitely be on the list to get one for a week long test!
Lindo ❤🎉 meu sonho de consumo
Having checked out both extensively, the Pilot wins with the 3rd row seat area room and the larger storage under the fake floor panel. Literally everything else is better with the MDX.
I think the Honda will stand the test of time better. I’ve been looking at the pilot and have driven a Touring. Love the seats. We are a family of 6 and looking to replace my wife’s Toyota Highlander that’s has been flawless with the v6. I’m waiting
To go drive the new grand highlander so I can compare.
To each there own. I personal love nicks and Nacks in the pilot like hidden storage under the rear cargo area and additional storage cubbies.
Nice review. Can you compare the pilot to the GrandHighlander?
Thanks! We already have compared Grand Highlander and Pilot, so you can check that out on the channel now 👍
Acura is made by Honda. Would literally be equal in reliability 🤣
@@impaul41 different dynamic enhancements. Increased dynamic would decrease the life longevity of the car. That’s a fair trade off.
@@manofsesame3024I don't understand your point. Can you elaborate?
I’m getting MDX
No one cares.
MDX is the expensive Honda, we chose the Pilot Touring and the whole family is very happy with our decision.🎉❤🎉
I really liked the Type S but i can't get past the silly track pad. I looked at the pilot but that V6 has cylinder deactivation and will be a mechanical nightmare.
that option can be turned off.
As @MetalsForBrunch said, you can buy a device call a "VCM Muzzler" to avoid such issues. At least that's what most people say.
In another video, I asked you about your sound pressure level meter and what weighting you use. You weren't sure about the weighting - could you check it out and let me know the answer? Because I asked Alex of Alex on Autos why his noise figures are SO much higher than yours. He said he tests at 50 mph, whereas you test at 55, so his numbers should be lower, but they're not - for Alex, a typical vehicle is lucky to score under 70 dB SPL and if it does, he gives it an A+. I'm guessing that you two use a different weighting scale. The scales used to be A, B, and C, but now there's a Z (no compensation/weighting) and I think B went away. Your numbers are almost 20 dB quieter than AoA so it's an important issue for me to figure out what's going on (20 dB is literally twice as loud, twice, i.e. a 10 dB difference is perceived as "twice as loud," and you guys have a 15 to 20 dB difference. 3 dB is what is considered to be "just discernably different" in sound level, meaning that a vehicle would have to score at least 3 dB better or worse to be considered louder or softer, or noisier or quieter if you prefer.)
I looked it up and it says the model we use is dB A 👍
@@CarConfections Thanks very much guys. I will ask Alex what weighting his meter is set to. Also, I suppose it could be that you guys just have a much better smoother road surface than here in the Silicon Valley. In fact it wouldn't surprise me at all as we have some of the worst roads I've ever seen (which is why I frequently comment about how wheels are way too large and impractical for me.) Thanks again.
l currently have a MDX ASpec, so I would go with that. I’ve also had a 20 MDX Tech and 19 Pilot. I realize the 19 Pilot is the older generation but i have enjoyed the current MDX far more. Just feels less like a minivan to me
The new pilot is not based on the minivan chassis. your 2019 pilot is though unfortunately.
@@MetalsForBrunch I don’t have a pilot anymore. I have a 23 MDX, but yes, the Acura isn’t based on the odyssey like the older pilot was.
Appreciate for the comparison. I was looking for this and it was very informative. In my mind the informant system is the deal breaker. I’m not a fan (just my opinion) of the Acura system and wonder why they don’t give up the option for either system. Well done gents. I’ve got a decision to make if I want to replace my 2019 touring Pilot that I really love and enjoy driving.
You stopped just seconds short of showing whether the second row seats fold flat when comparing cargo space in both vehicles. Strange omission. Do they?
Yes
@@CarConfections Thanks.
MDX for me
0:31 ❤
If you’re looking for a 3rd row and don’t want to watch the video. The Honda Pilot is the better 3rd row suv. The MDX is cooler and more fun and just so happens to also have a third row that rivals the back seats of a Porsche 911. From a proud owner of a 22 MDX and ex owner of a pilot. I didn’t watch the video yet
You should have subtracted a point on the MDX for its distracting and gaudy gloss-black plastic.
What’s with the stupid 3 row seat obsession. There are 3.13 people in the average family in the USA. The average family size in the US has declined from 3.8 in 1940 to 3.1 by 2021. Yet car reviewers/manufacturers insist on having a 3rd row in crossover; and calling it a “family holler" (BTW - the real meaning of crossover is - glorified minivan). How many families actually have 7-8 people in them? Whose family are they driving around? Not to mention that most of the 3rd row seats are completely uncomfortable, difficult to get to and kill your cargo capacity. Plus they add weight to the vehicle. I’ve seen reviews of vehicles like the Honda Passport, where reviewers are complaining about not having a 3rd row seat. I see that as a benefit!!! Look if you need 7-8 seaters, buy a minivan, trust me these 3 row crossovers aren’t any cooler! At least a minivan is comfortable for all passengers; including your exceptional 5 child family.
Everybody doesn't like the styling of minivans. The sliding doors prefer 4 doors. Many people want the capability of AWD that many minivans lack. They also lack ground clearance, ruggedness, and towing capacity
The previous 3rd Generation Pilot looked like the Odyssey minivan.
You also buy vehicles for hauling cargo and people.
When I was growing up 1960s-1970s people had station wagons and large full-sized passenger cars. Even a mid-sized car had massive trunks.
For ppl who don’t know Acura is Hondas luxury car brand so that’s why the Acura won😊
Wish both vehicles had been white. To me white looks more luxurious.the pilot looks drab .
Under heavy acceleration, the MDX sounds so much better.
I’m about to buy a new suv and it would 100% be the Mdx if not for that DUMB touchpad system. I hate it so much. I had a 2021 RDX that has it and I couldn’t stand it. Why would they put that in the luxury line and put the touchscreen in the Honda models?? I could get over it for a year or so but this will be my car for many years so it’s a no-go. It’s between the Pilot and new Lexus RX for me now.
🤔you should be comparing the Pilot to the Lexus TX rather than with the RX for similar size and 3rd row seating
I have a ‘21 black edition pilot and the sound system sounds like complete dookie. Sad honda cant even put a $500 sound system in a $50k car! 👎🏽😒
4th Generation Pilot Elite trim has upgraded 12 speaker Bose Audio System.
MDX has ELS System.
Agreed. Sounds super cheap
MDX often discounts better than Honda .
I take the Pilot :).
No meaning clip. It only depends how deep is your pocket. Basically, they are the same car
I’ll take a Pilot anytime 😂
Disregard disregard the last point!😅😅😅
Not having a touch screen in 2024 is unexceptable. Pilot everyday.
hell, I just bought a pilot and its my first car without a CD player and has push start..............The car before this one is a 2010 pilot I'm finally getting rid of after trying and failing to run it to the ground.
FWD Pilot Touring please. NO crappy touch pad , no third row vents , more usable room, foot room under seats , NOOoooooo premium fuel .
Get the AWD version. Drives and handles much better with the torque vectoring.
Many people buy these vehicles for the sophisticated Torque Vectorng AWD System. The Super Handling AWD System in the Acura. The IVTM4 AWD System in the Pilot.
They are mechanically simular but tuned differently.
I wouldn't get a FWD MDX or FWD Pilot. I always wanted the SH-AWD System in the Acura vehicles.
I driven a few MDX Generation over the years. I have an old Acura 3.2 TL. When in for repair often times get loaner vehicles with Super Handling AWD System.
It's not just for snow but all weather conditions.
The systems have been upgraded again in MDX and Pilot.
But watch RUclips Driving Sports TV
Acura SH-AWD System vs Honda IVTM4 AWD.
Mükamemel
I test drove the new Honda Pilot, but I am not purchasing it until I see the IIHS crash test results which have not been released.
Honda actually showed us the Pilot that was crash tested and, let's just say, it'll certainly pass with flying colors
16:37 its surprised me that Mazda is compete in this luxury vehicle list
MDX because it’s a real luxury upgrade from the pilot. No longer is the MDX just a fancy pilot with a different logo.
The architecture is completely different from the pilot hence why it’s worthy of an upgrade to an MDX. And the MDX offers an additional powertrain not used in lesser Hondas
