Just junked our family’s 2003 Honda Pilot from a transmission failure. Had 229,586 miles on her. 20 New England winters and it never let us down. Thing drove like a fat pontoon boat but we were incredibly intent and loyal to that thing throughout the 20 years. Go Honda.
I had a 2001 Honda Accord that made it to 277,000 miles in 18 years, but had to junk it because of rust from Maine winters. Everything else was good. They are great cars. Going with a Toyota hybrid next though, I think.
I would've rebuilt that trans. After 20 years, she deserves it.
Cheaper to get a new tranny than a new car

So the good thing about this new Pilot is that the transmission is not from ZF anymore. Honda brought the tranny in-house so it’s completely Honda engine-transmission.
I drove around town from dealership to dealership and I sat in a Telluride, Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Volvo, Infiniti QX60, Lexus Tx, and never even thought of a Honda. Ever. I happened upon this video and something clicked. The next day, I drove to the Honda place and two days later, I took home a Pilot Elite. I absolutely love it. Your review was spot on.

@@grouchosays I like it so much and literally every day I make a comment about how happy I am with it. And then ... this past Sunday ... a young guy in a Honda Accord ran a red light going south, just as I was turning north from a westbound lane. He rammed into me but I slammed on my brakes in time so that the damage is at the front driver's corner of the car. It's all the electronic stuff that is going to be the challenge to get back to what it's supposed to me. I just so annoyed at the kid for not paying attention. I'll be turning the car in to the body shop at the end of this month for a few weeks. I realize this is a total tangent and nothing to do with your question, but I'm venting. ;-) I am very happy with the purchase. Good luck in your search!

Yep, under 3000 miles and the ONLY new car I have ever had, since I have always been a "buy used" believer. ;-) The one thing I would say I might reconsider is the "Black Edition" which, don't get me wrong, I like; but at the end of the day I'm not sure the red accents/red lighting is worth the extra $$. I'm on the fence on that. Come back on here when you've picked out your final choice. :-) My second choice was the Toyota Highlander Platinum.

That "driving depressions" story hit me a little too close to home. I traded in a 2005 Mitsubishi EVO for a new 2007 Honda Pilot when I found out we were expecting our first kid. Here we are in 2023... not only do I still not have a fast car, but I STILL have the 2007 Honda Pilot which I will be giving to that same first child now that she has her driver's permit, and we replaced it with a 2023 Honda Pilot Elite. lmao

I might have you beat: our twins just turned 8 months and we’re getting by with my cx5, but the pilot’s size would help us out tremendously + more with the trailsport (yes I actually do light off-roading and beach days) I wanna hold out for the mid cycle refresh as I know they’ll bump up the screen size and offer more standard features, but not sure we can hold out that long… we’re gonna need a bigger boat.

We were actually looking at downsizing & getting an X3 M40i instead of the new Pilot since my daughter was older, and we didn't need the space for strollers and stuff like that anymore. 2022 comes along and we have another baby... 14 year age difference between the two, and that's why I settled with the 2023 Pilot instead of getting something that will go fast but can still haul some stuff for 3 people and a corgi.

I spent over 35 years in automotive world at the dealership level. It would always amaze me that a 10 year old 7 Series with 150k miles was worth less than a 10 year old Camry with the same mileage at the auction.
That's because the 7 series has around $10k-15k of deferred maintenance and it basically BER (beyond economic repair) and that's assuming to can get the parts AND program them to the car....
@@ckm-mkcso true! My parents had a 98 740i for the longest time. For the first 5 yrs it was pretty reliable and then everything went down hill quickly. They kept it for a long time bc it wasnt worth much used and when it drove, it was a pretty damn nice car. But it spent yr 5-20 mostly in the garage as a spare car bc it was never reliable enough for my parents to comfortably use long distance and it wasn’t worth enough to repair it.

My wife just got a '24 CRV, and same as this Pilot, I can't believe how much I appreciate Honda's current interiors. We had a matching set of '17 CRV and Civic hatch before this, and although they were also very usable, the one friction point was how they put many of the HVAC controls in the touchscreen. I'm no-shit happy that Honda did not double down and shove more functions into a screen for this generation. Add in the little compartments everywhere and less gloss on the dash (I despise reflective surfaces on sunny days), and these are my favorite interiors in a long time.
That's ok, the CVT will be there to eventually let you down.

I’ve got a 2014 MDX with 130,000 miles. I love it. It’s the best all around, most practical, most comfortable, most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. Under the skin we all know it’s a Honda.
I see all the same benefits in this new Honda Pilot, nice!
is a 2014 mdx navi package, 98,ooo km for 29,000$ canadian dollars a good deal? is the 2014 mdx fast and sporty, yet offroad capable?
@@mikeduncan7552 That MDX was about $60-65k new so the price is in the ballpark if there is no damage history and it’s in great condition. (Ask for a CARFAX report) Just make sure it has all the maintenance records including records of at least one transmission oil change, transfer case oil change and rear differential oil change plus the regular engine oil changes with 0W-20 synthetic engine oil. Also is there a record of a timing belt change since it’s 10 years old. ($1000-$1500 cost). The Acura SH-AWD is an excellent system for ice, snow, and gravel roads. It’s not an off-road 4X4.

I drove BMWs for years thinking this is what I need. Got so tired of the cost of ownership and reliability issues. Traded my 2016 X5 for a 2023 CRV ST and couldn't be happier. Some wonder why I "downgraded" but it isn't that at all-it was a priority shift in my life and realizing what is important. A solid, dependable, practical vehicle just makes a lot more sense to me now.
That's why you lease BMWs not buy them. Then there is little cost of ownership and any issues are fixed via warranty

My wife drives a 2006 X5, aside from typical BMW window problems, it's still so incredibly complicated to work on, compared to my 2015 WRX. there are so many sensors and nothing seems to be where it it's supposed to be. I can't image fixing a newer model. But the I6 it has feels like it'll never break.

I've got a 2007 328i. 145k miles. Have you done the holy Trinity of oil gaskets? Oil pan, oil filter housing and valve cover?

2010 535 wagon at 122k and there's nothing I can or want to replace it with. EPS has ruined most new cars for me

I've owned a cdn touring (US elite) since June. I've done multiple road trips with the wife and 2 kids (in car seats). I really appreciate how well designed and practical it is. The click HVAC controls are simple to use and easy to find. All the steering wheel controls are there. I highly recommend this suv.

Hahaha the driving depressions section was beautiful and just the soul crushing existential dread I needed this afternoon.
I like that he talks about long term seat comfort. I’m so sick of most of the car review sites that talk able the stitching on the dashboard for an hour, or say the seats are “supportive”(whatever the hell that means). That doesn’t help a viewer at all. We need to know things like long- drive seat comfort because 90% of today’s vehicles have seats like park benches or frontier airlines economy seats. If I’m going to buy a ~$50k vehicle, I want a first class comfort type seat, not a cement hard seat.
We've had two fully loaded Telluride's (now none) and considering getting a third or a 24' Pilot Elite, and the seat debate is an important long term factor as you noted. The Telluride seats have longer seat bottoms and more thigh support as they extend closer to the back of the knee but they're much more firm than the Pilot.
Loved the "Driving Impressions". It was brilliant, cracked me up. I really enjoyed it. Seriously, you have some serious other talents that need to come out more often.

After owning 3 Mercedes, I am in my mid-40s and recently bought my first Toyota - and I love it. As you get older you learn hard lessons about owning certain luxury vehicles…

I drive a Honda Accord 2.0T after spending the previous 12 years in a very nice Cadillac CTS. I could have afforded a new luxury vehicle, but I put my vanity aside and chose practicality. I'm happy I made the switch. Yeah, I miss thew Cadillac's V6, and the turbo lag can be annoying, but but all in all the Accord has been a very good and enjoyable everyday vehicle. It's also been cheaper to maintain and trouble free. And that all adds up to a happy Honda owner.
Make sure you maintain those turbos..... The reason I bought the Pilot over the competitors is that it is naturally aspirated. I didn't want to take on the expense of maintaining the turbo or having one seize up because I didn't.
Funny thing is I have a 23 Pilot Elite and a 23 Civic Type R. Fun to watch these as I own both. 8k miles on the Pilot since March and zero issues. R is still newish but look forward to keeping both for the long haul as I hate the EV revolution.

Love the reviews! You guys are some of the most honest and best reviewers on RUclips! I recently got a CX 90, and while it does not have as much space as the pilot it has the same reliability, the same attention to detail the same physical controls, and it has plenty of space while having more design and a lot more soul and passion.

This has been a privilege to watch / listen to. And I mean that with 0% sarcasm. Keep being you, Mark.. keep being you.
With BMWs, you buy them about 3-5 years old with under 50,000 miles and own them until the depreciation curve flattens out. If you sell it too quick, you'll get a huge hit in depreciation. I bought a 3 year old 335i in 2017 for 28k. The trade it value is now about 13k. A significant drop but imagine if I had paid the 56k sticker price.

We have had 2 Passports and while we enjoyed them, being grandparents, we needed more space with 2 car seats. We just got a 2024 Pilot Elite and so far, really enjoy it. While the interior is "utilitarian", we don't need flashy. The ride is MUCH more comfortable than the Passports ever were and the list of amenities is excellent. Thanks for this review as it was honest and real. Well done!

I bought my '02 Sequoia 7 years ago now, and my family thought I was nuts. What I love is that it doesn't hide anything behind BS or distracts you with bling/screens/buttons. This Pilot seems to have the same philosophy: no BS. I will keep it in mind when the Sequoia finally crumbles away in a decade or so.
This platform has been awesome for so many years and through generations of model changes. I drove a 2006 Ridgeline, which is basically a Pilot with a truck bed, and loved that thing. It was running flawlessly when I traded it in with 225,000 on the odometer. Wish I still had it!

Me driving a K24 honda is now more of a hobby, because it's cleaning out my wallet at 8-9 dollars per gallon.
I have driven Yukon Denali's for years...actually my last 5 vehicles were Denali's.....recently (1 yr) got a '22 ridgeline for half the price of Yukon...ride quality and comfort are perfect at this point in the world of crazy numbers!!
Ridgeline is actually an extremely useful truck. I made fun of them until I borrowed my friend’s Ridgeline for the day. I was kinda wowed by it.

The new Pilot is a really impressive 7 seat Crossover. The Odyssey, Passport, and Ridgeline need the new interior ASAP. Another great review by Savage Geese!
Mark described a nightmare scenario for us younger men. And yet when you look around, that’s the norm. Maybe the pilot is a lesson in standing up for yourself… or you might just get unlucky enough to have to own one
Always remember nobody's forcing you to do anything. You want a wife and family and are aware of the sacrifices, go for it. You don't want to, that's even easier. Never let yourself get pressured into anything by anyone.
We have a 2020 Pilot Touring and it is nearly flawless. Other than the wiring harness for the infotainment being replaced twice (under warranty both times), we have zero complaints. It hauls people, groceries, hockey gear, dogs, IKEA crap etc as good as anything we have ever owned. If the Honda has improved it for 2024, then it should be only better.

I have an 06 Ridgeline with 460 000 kms and was on the fence about getting a new Pilot. That screenplay pitch completely sold me on it. Thanks for the unique perspective.
As a parent of twins, and an owner of a Honda Odyssey with 140k miles, I can relate to the unhinged portion of this video. I went from my first Odyssey to a Mercedes GL550 back to another Odyssey. Honda gets it. It cranks out transportation appliances with just enough personality and sportiness to make them enjoyable to drive for a decade plus without compromising reliability, safety, or value. On top of that, any owner with youtube can keep their Honda running like a top for a couple hundred thousand miles or more with basic tools and a few free hours. I never take the long way home in the Odyssey but I've also never had a second thought about if it would have enough space or be reliable enough to drive across North America tomorrow. Honda makes perfect family vehicles.
This is the content I'm here for. Thanks for putting this out there with this perspective. Recently acquired a 2024 Pilot Elite myself, so this is of particular interest. We're about to enter into early retirement life, and will be spending a LOT of time roaming around the American West. Lots of desolate terrain. And we live where it gets real cold and snows a lot in the winter. So although I could certainly have afforded to buy some of the expensive competitors, I basically wanted something that I could reasonably count on to be reliable, and to start every time, and to not strand me somewhere that's 600 miles from the nearest BMW dealership, and so on. Reasonable and affordable maintenance for the long haul. Can carry a fuck-ton of stuff with me, and not have to worry too much about trashing a super-fancy interior. Last weekend we went out to the local Nat'l Forest to find a Xmas tree, and we were able to easily slide a 9' Grand Fir in the back. Stuff like that. Practical and capable and so on. Would a Cayenne Turbo be fun? You bet. Do I wanna be the dickhead that parks one at a trailhead? No.

@@grouchosays Yup. There's a few things I wish were different, but it's been great overall. Just back from 3 days of camping, and the room for stuff was great. Can fit 4 kayaks (12'+) on top on my Thule rack. Things I wish were different? 1) Wish the steering weren't quite so light. Sure, useful for soccer moms in the suburbs, but gets blown around a bit too much in crosswinds. 2) Wish the cruise control system didn't use braking so aggressively after picking up a touch of additional speed on downhills, just to keep the speed right. 3) Wish the Bridgestone tires weren't quite so highway-oriented; I fear a bit for them when driving on truly rocky roads. Will definitely at least go to an all-terrain tire (hard to find in 50-series profile) when the originals are done. Might even look into a complete wheel changeout to go from 20" to 18", mainly for the places/surfaces I drive often in the middle of nowhere.

So back in 2013, I bought what for me was my dream car at the time. A loaded Ford Explorer Sport with all the options. 365 HP 375 ft lbs of torque leather and great sound system. I was so happy with all the features and options. Now 11 years later, I'm ditching this thing. The SUPER powerful 3.6L v-6 twin turbo charged engine was awesome but I'm SOO over it.
One thing people don't ever talk about is city driving with a fast car. The problem is 40 MPH. Seriously. In a normal car you may have to depress the gas pedal like a full inch to get and maintain 40 MPH. With my powerful engine, I don't. Engine idle will almost always keep it at 40 MPH so now I have to keep my foot OFF the accelerator just to drive the speed limit. I can't tell you how many cramps this has caused in my shin. I know, I know......WAAA....cry more in your luxury SUV. But it's a real issue and I freaking HATE IT.
Not to mention Ford flat out LIED about the gas mileage. I once used adaptive cruise on a 3 hour drive cuz they told me this was the way to get the best gas mileage. After resetting the calculator and driving for 3 hours, guess what the best mileage I've ever seen in this beast was??? 17, that's it. AND when I got into the big city of Dallas and dealing with that traffic, in a matter of minutes it dropped to 13!!
Not only that, Ford's transmissions suck! They're not beefed up to handle this much power and at 78k miles I needed a complete tranny rebuild. The dealership was suggesting a replacement. $7k later and the rebuild (not from Ford) was in and I was happy. BUT now 2 yrs later, it's slipping and I'm done.
I'm now looking for dependable transportation at a reasonable price and low maintenance. SO Toyota and Honda are my jam. Maybe others but we'll see. I have no idea what to buy cuz it seems like no matter what company I look at, there's always someone who's having issues. Some of the major issues like Subaru. I also don't trust Mazda.

We have a 2017 Pilot EX and your first impressions are spot on. There’s so much room and practicality. It has been a workhorse even trailering a large box trailer with 2 snowmobiles in it. One thing that drives me crazy though is how quickly the front rotors warp and I get steering wheel shake when braking especially from freeway speeds. Even after replacing the pads and rotors, the steering wheel shake comes back fairly quickly. I wish there was a Honda big brake kit for the front brakes. Good luck and enjoy!
My wife and I, love our 2023 Pilot Sport. Thanks Savage geese for having realistic reviews on cars. We bought it based on your original review and saw it at the Chicago Autoshow. The SPACE, reliability and seat comfort sold it for us. Coming from a Rav4 to a Pilot was huge space difference. We have put over 5000 miles on to date with another upcoming 1600 mile trip without a single fault. I will say from a maintenance perspective the oil filter is not great but thats my only complaint. Buy their special tool and this beast will last a long time. Keep up the great work!
Have not had the chance to test drive one yet....hate the dealership bs of going for a simple test drive. I have an Accord so I know Hondas are well thought out etc but how is the Pilot acceleration? Any complaints especially with people and stuff on board.
@@tjsullivan4793 call around some dealer will let you. As for acceleration it's perfectly fine for merging onto a highway or lane splitting. You'll never need to be redlining with the 10 speed.
oil filter change tip--stuff a bunch of paper towels in the cross member under the oil filter before you unscrew it. When the oil comes pouring out (and as you know, it will) the paper towels will absorb it and minimize the mess.

He didn't buy it brand new. He didn't tell us how much he bought it for lightly used. But yes, he certainly lost a deep five-figure amount on the ownership experience. On the plus side, he got to try that kind of car out, and it functioned as a camera car for years for them.
I have a 2012 pilot and it is one hell of a workhorse. I never worry about it breaking down, and if it does, i know it's going to be a simple, affordable fix. I have my eyes set on getting a new one and I think i will be happy with that decision. I am glad i held off from getting the Telluride.
Great running vehicles we have a 12 Pilot also with 150k miles although maintenance & repair bills can be very expensive as with any vehicle I guess, timing belt change recommended at 100k is painful at $1600 - $2000 shop bill, we also had to change out the alternator this year $700 for OEM replacement plus labor & tax, Ouch!!

This video, along with the Grand Highlander video, are why I now own a 2025 Honda Pilot. This review is spot on; I have nothing but good things to say about my new Pilot.
Have you noticed if the mileage is really bad? We really want the '25 Pilot over the Grand Highlander hybrid. The Pilot was the most perfect vehicle for our needs that we've seen so far. The only things holding us back are 1. No hybrid in Pilot, 2. Resale value if ever needed to sell is not as good as GH.
@@mangoesification we are getting 20-22 mpg in exclusively in-town travel. We have not done any highway travel to date and have put around 1700 miles on our pilot. While I’m sure a hybrid would be great for mileage, the simplicity of a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder is a huge plus in my opinion.
My wife said she wanted a bigger, safer car for the kids. We just got a 2024 Pilot Trailsport. I cashed out my 401k to pay for all the oem accessories. I know this is the better investment for my family's future.

As a 2002 honda odyssey owner, the new hondas arent the same. I just junked my 2002 for a 2023 odyssey elite. The services at the dealer are crazy expensive now. The honda dealer near my house charged me $180 per oil change/oil filter/labor. And the damn oil needs to be changed every 3 to 4 months. I put less than 1k miles on it a month. Ive recently learned to change my own oil and do minor maintenance to save money. I think in 2023 there are much better and affordable options than honda. I truly think they've fallen off their game.
They've started playing the game better in the states i.e. Make more MONEY!!

Our 2003 Pilot lasted 19 years and 1 day, and would still be running if two different subframes hadn't rusted out in 19 upstate NY winters. I would still be happily driving it, too. When I had no choice, I bought a 2022 Honda Passport, which I love like crazy.
I went new Pilot Elite over other options recently too when shopping for a spacious reliable 3 row. I could have went with a luxury brand but for all the reasons you said, I stayed away. The other non luxury brands I looked at had reliability issues, were much smaller inside or had huge markups. This was the perfect combo for me. Can’t wait to put a ton of worry free miles on it!

I have a five-year-old crossover with the nice NA V6 - which has been replaced by a turbo four - and the Pilot is now at the top of my list. The controls are logical (even the push-button transmission selector), the size and ride are perfect, and it doesn't attract unwanted attention or drown in needless complication like the premium-brand offerings. My only complaint after the test drive is signature Honda: engine and road noise could be better suppressed.
Yeah if they could just isolate the interior a bit more the damn thing would be a 10/10. We have an EX-L and while its not bad they really could do a lot better.
Noise and ride is why I’ve historically chosen the RAV4 over the CRV and Highlander over the Pilot. I’d have to drive both back-to-back again to see if Toyota still has the advantage, new Toyotas aren’t as quiet as they used to be.
@@J.W.W.Toyota alters the sound level based on trim by a lot. I have a friend with a limited Rav4 (last gen but whatever) and it’s more silent than Hondas I’ve been in, but I rented an LE trim Rav4 and the road noise was awful even compared to Hondas
@@J.W.W. I can tell you the new Pilot is head and shoulders more quiet than the Grand Highlander. At least on the Elite, it's really silly Honda didn't put acoustic glass on all trims considering nearly every car has them now.
@@user-yx4on8hx4w The Pilot tests noticeably louder than the Grand Highlander over at Car Confections. I'd have to check which trims they tested to see if it's apples to apples (top trims in both models.)
I got the 22 passport trail sport after your review of it and how much you loved driving it, I've had it over 20 months , and find I can drive it for hours and feel very comfortable and rested. Keep up the good work. But I will be keeping my Honda.
I greatly approve. I've actually unsubbed from few of the review channels, as all they talk about these days is $100k+ cars and suvs. Otherwise known as some of the worst investments you can ever make in your life. And it's burned into the car manufacturer's as well. Once we really go hybrid/electric, how anyone making under $70k a year is going to afford a new car, is beyond me.
I have a 2023 BMW X3 M40i which cost $71K. My first German car and it’s a blast to drive. Not gonna lie though, terrified of the future depreciation when I go to sell it down the road. I’ve always had practical Japanese/Korean cars but wanted to try something fun for once… may regret it.

You won’t regret it. Life is too short to drive boring, bland cars if you can afford it, go for it. The B58 engine will probably outlast all these 2 liter junk engines
